@Dark: if you launch disk optimisation, you'll soon be told if you have an SSD. Or you can grope around in properties for your system disk, to find out (the hint is probably in the name). Or, try Device Manager and/or storage management. Etc.

Re: Accessible Antivirus?

Got around to installing MSE. Totally accessible installation process. Updating was accessible, so was initial scan. Turned off scheduled scan with no problems. Can open the interface from the system tray, or just read that protection is on from there okay. All seems good. Maybe the protection is mostly a placebo, but that's all I really want hahah. The one thing that I didn't like was it turned on windows automatic updates. Hope it doesn't make a habit of that, or pester me about having it turned off. Seems really user-friendly though, and doesn't slow shutdown and boot time as far as I can tell. Cheers.

If you have sighted people around, I'd be tempted to just keep it. I live alone so the fact that the threat dialogues now seem to be more inaccessible than they were means I just have to accept whatever AVG wants to do. I couldn't tell AVG to allow a file to download the other day, nor could I turn off AVG's protection like I used to be able to do, so it's got to go.

Re: Accessible Antivirus?

So, here's my dilema. I've spoken to my Dad about this, informing him of the false positives and stuff. We've come to the conclusion that some sort of protection will be necessary even if we were to remove AVG, so I haven't gone for it yet. If I had my way, I'd just install an add blocker (I've already done this on my Dad's firefox) and be done, but I don't know if it's enough. So I think if we are going to remove AVG I will need to suggest something to put on this pc, as it's not just my stuff on here. This is a windows 7 system and Id' like something quite lightweight and preferably free. I have 3.91 gb of ram available according to my resource monitor, and 2.29 gb of that ram is being used up by processes, and I don't know if that's nvda, avg, dropbox or what. I don't know if my Dad will allow me to go through with this or not, but when I told him about the false positives he asked couldn't we just work
with the companies and report stuff, but I don't know how possible that is, because even that process is automated now.

Re: Accessible Antivirus?

What I had to do to remove it was: tried the usual uninstall from the programs list, but it hung on 2%. Then searched for AVG removal tool and downloaded it from avg.com. It got rid of AVG Xen, but left behind AVG protection. I clicked uninstall again in programs list, and this time it asked me if I wanted to remove it from the list, yes. Then after restart I opened task manager and found an AVG process running. Ended the process, then searched a few directories for AVG folders and deleted them. I found it in C program files, and C users username app data. Think it was in roaming and local low but check them all. Deleting it from these locations stopped the process from running. I then went to services.msc to check everything was gone from there and it was. I then deleted all references to AVG from the registry, though this probably wasn't necessary, and as I don't know what I'm doing, probably quite stupid too.

Re: Accessible Antivirus?

I'm currently using Eset Nod32, but you need to stick with version 8, because 9 and 10 really aren't accessible. I tested both versions with JAWS and NVDA, and I actually got myself into a really bad situation where I had managed to set a password to protect the settings, but then it updated itself to the latest version, and I could no longer access anything. I also couldn't uninstall the program, because the password entry dialog was inaccessible, so I had no choice but to format my computer. That really sucked. So, when my subscription is up, I'm not going to pay again unless they get their act together and clean up the accessibility of their product. Obviously, we have no idea how long an older version of something like an antivirus is going to be supported, and paying top dollar for something that's several versions behind seems a bit counterintuitive anyway. Before I used Eset, I used Sophos for quite awhile. I was relatively happy with it, acce
ssibility wise, but I grew increasingly uncomfortable with the fact that all of its interactions took place in the cloud. So, for example, if the internet went down, I wouldn't be able to run a scan. Then again, depending on how you look at it, you might not need to run a scan in the first place if you haven't recently been connected to the internet anyway. They do, however, have a separate offline scanner which I would trust, and have installed just in case I want to get a second opinion, so to speak. That also assumes that you're comfortable with the results of your virus scans being stored on a server.I've tried Vipre in the past as well, but would not recommend touching that with a 10 foot pole. In the first place, accessibility is slipping, although it's a gradual decline rather than the complete 180 that Eset did. Also, it hogged up more system resources than I care to think about. it also made my computer boot slower than a tortoise. So,
as much as I detest Microsoft's data collection practices, which are only exacerbated if you use Windows Defender, I have to say that I'm going to answer the siren song once my Eset subscription is up, unless a new and trustworthy game comes into town that's worth trying, or Eset gets its act together, as I said above. But if it comes down to it, I'll probably use Defender, while keeping the Sophos offline scanner and Malwarebytes around, since I have reservations about how effective a Microsoft product can be by itself anyway. Then again, as others have pointed out, a little bit of common sense gets you a long way when it comes to avoiding malware.

It's interesting that Kaspersky was quite unaccessible on one Windows XP machine, that I have here, hovever from win7 it is good and best on win10, there also Jaws is working with it without touch cursor (not sure if calling Jaws feature right, just translating from slovak).I have one nice situation with Eset Smart Security, I think it was version 8, I browsed internet and on one site, without any warning adware has begun to install, ESS informed me late and I got adware to browsers, which I was unable to remove few years. Yeah, Eset after it removed main exe files, which it considered as potentially unwanted, I was shocked hovever how easy can anything launch from website without warning me.This would never happen with Kaspersky for few reasons, first is that KTS offers "Vulnerability scan", which checks your system's settings and applications for vulnerabilities, for example on my system was enabled launching applications from network and portabl
e medias, great finding. Kaspersky solved all these issues automatically.Second reason is the kaspersky's System watcher, that is very powerfull KTS/KIS component designated for antiransomware protection, when something suspicious is doing in your system, it block it and offers you options to allow or disallow it, also roll back and block all changes. It protects also browsers, so if something installs plugin or changes something in browser, alert is showed with options mentioned above.I don't want to critisise Eset here or something like that, I just saying what happened to me. It was on site where you normally don't go. I am a radical opponent of security rule "Don't visit untrusted sites.", so I taking a lot from it, but also accept some risk, for that I need perfect and reliably av. Edit from 29.5.2017 23:24Note:

Re: Accessible Antivirus?

Have to agree about SSD's. It's the one thing that makes a massively noticeable difference to speed. And as a bonus, if you keep your old HDD, you have a windows recovery option that can be performed without any sighted assistance, something I banged my head against for years after I found macbooks could be recovered by blind users. Especially if you have a desktop, you can just keep your old HDD in the original bay, then if your PC goes haywire to the point you can't even use it, just shutdown, power off, swap 2 cables over to your old HDD, then dboot up and you have a working computer again. Additionally Samsung's clone software is usable with a screen reader, so you can clone your new SSD again as a kind of recovery. After the clone, just swap the cables back, and boot up. At no point will you encounter a screen that your screen reader can't read because you never went through an OS installation. Found that to be a real unexpected bonus of buying
an SSD for my desktop, and those things are really affordable now.

To put it short: some programs leave behind broken registry entries, but they are very, very small and will not be accessed since the program is removed. Lol, drak is correct here there is no better way of protection than avoiding dodgy stuff . Odd you say c cleaner caused such issues, since I've been using it for a couple of years now, including the clean registry function and it's been great, indeed it let me remove some of the more annoying stuff that came with windows 10 that I didnt' want, and cleaning the registry very much speedup startup on Windows xp and 7. I did use Malware bites for quite some time, since even when I used avg I did occasionally run into things that avg missed but malware bites got nicely. I do not know if it is necessary to have on a windows 10 machine but I suppose it's better to be safe than sorry. Thanks to Drak I have also recently discovered the joys of the addblocker plus addon,  I'm finding generally helpful.Btw,I personally use a c

Re: Accessible Antivirus?

Last time I used C cleaner, over 10 years ago, it was far from idiot-proof. I ran the registry cleaner and perged everything it offered me and was rewarded with the dreaded blue screen, haahah. Been scared of it ever since. I've just tried it again as I can easily recover this PC. Ran the basic cleaner and was pleased to see it found stuff that MS's disk clean up doesn't. Then clicked registry with a trembling finger and like the idiot I am clicked fix all without bothering to read the list. I'll never learn. Though fingers crossed I've got away with it this time. A successful restart and everything seems okay.Re Kaspersky, I tried it quite a few years ago and found it wouldn't let assistive software of any sort anywhere near it. They must have fixed that since. But like you said, it depends on how much you feel you need good protection. If I didn't visit the odd dodgy site here and there, I think I'd do without. With paypal and a dedi
cated bank account that only has just enough money in it every month, I feel safe from having my bank account emptied. And if my PC runs slow because of malware, I can recover pretty easily.

Re: Accessible Antivirus?

Hello, for me the best antivirus is Kaspersky total security or Kaspersky internet security depends on your requirements, theyr are fully accessible (on win7 and higher) and have lots of pro features that will protect you against malware, from my experience theyr are working very good and reliably, what was not case of avs that I have before like Avast, Avira or Eset, I have never tried av from Microsoft but it haven't features like System watcher or Webcam / Microphone protection which Kaspersky have, but is possible that I miss something, I haven't tried it as I sayd.Anyway, KTS or KIS are payd products and I have purchased them because as developer and IT fan I need them, so if you are in similar situation they will be great for you I think, if you're using computer only for checking emails or playing audiogames, you will probably be satisfied with windows defender and MBam scanner.Best regardsRastislav

Accessible Antivirus?

Accessible Antivirus?

Just got rid of AVG as it's not as accessible as it was before this latest revamp. I could no longer temporarily turn off its protection to do a system restore, or download a file I knew to be safe. It was a total pain to remove even with the AVG removal tool, which didn't remove every trace of AVG like it claims. AVG is acting more like malware, AdWare, and ransomware than the things it's supposed to be protecting me from. Anyone know of an antivirus that's relatively hassle-free using a screen reader? Or is anyone managing without an antivirus program. I don't have it on either of my laptops because I don't do anything that would require it, and I love the way they boot up quicker and just run better without antivirus. Wish I could live without them as often the cure is worse than the disease.
