Re: [Blind-Computing] blackboard assessability
Jamie, I just completed a degree through Charter Oak State College and they use Blackboard. For the most part, BB is accessible. One area where I ran into problems is in the online exams. If an exam is timed, the constantly updating on-screen timer steals focus away from Jaws and makes taking the test using a screen reader impossible. The school is using an older version of BB (version 9 SP 7) and the software is up to version 9 SP 11. Many screen reader enhancements were made in SP 10. So, you will need to know which version of BB is being used in order to judge what your ultimate experience will be. In my case, I needed a sighted person to read/scribe the online tests. The untimed tests were fine. Also, navigating the discussion forums can be cumbersome. If you have any other questions, please ask. BTW, which school are you considering for your Masters? John - Original Message - From: "Jamie Seeger" To: Sent: Thursday, March 21, 2013 11:49 AM Subject: [Blind-Computing] blackboard assessability Hi, I am thinking of going back to school to obtain a master degree on-line. I see many of the universities use Blackboard to host their on-line content. I am wondering if this interface is accessible for one using a screen reader? I am using a windows 7 home premium 64 bit system. I have Jaws, System Access, and NVDA as screen readers I can use. If the program is accessible are there any tips in navigating the program? Re: [Blind-Computing] google accessible search engine
A better choice is www.startpage.com. They use the Google search engine, but the pages are much friendlier for screen reader users. Also, they do not track any of the search information, for those who cherish their privacy. They offer both http and https searching. I was using the https connections, but found that it was getting a bit slow, so I switched back to using the http connection, and results are now returned in a flash. Hi Al, That is a very clever way to have a portable talking Image for Windows recovery system. Thanks for sharing that idea with the list. I have a spare Hard drive that I have two partitions on. I keep by backup images on partition 2On partition 1 I keep a copy of my OS, basic programs, and Image for Windows. If my C drive ever becomes corrupt or whatever, all I do is pop the side cover off my computer and then unplug my C drive and hook it up to the spare drive. Machine boots right up and runs fine. Then I take a USB bridge adapter (think that is what the little rascal is called) and hook it up to my C drive and then plug it into a USB port. I then run the Image for windows program and select whatever image I want to put back on the C Drive . How did you accomplish this amazing feat? A standard single-layer, single-sided DVD can store approximately 4.7 gb of data, while a single-layer, double-sided DVD can store 9.4 gb of data. So assuming you used two single-layer, double-sided DVD's, you could only store a total of about 19 gb of data. Did you use some hard-to-find double-layer, double-sided DVD's, which can hold about 18.5 gb each? Or did you perhaps use blue ray disks, which have a much higher storage capacity than standard DVD's, but are much more expensive and thus not really practical for frequent image backups? Or is there some magical technique for cramming more data onto a DVD than it can physically store? Just curious. Re: [Blind-Computing] Hulit/Packard computers;
The HP business class computers will typically outlast the consumer class computers, given the same amount of use. This is from personal experience and a good friend of mine is an HP repair tech. I have been using an HP DC5000 business class desktop everyday for the past 6 years with no problems. My sister and two other friends have HP consumer class laptops. All three units are about 3 years old and all 3 have been returned to HP multiple times for repair. One with display problems, one for overheating and one for HD and DVD problems. Honestly, any computer can and will fail. From a laptop perspective, I have seen the best results with IBM/Lenovo. This is what I have been recommending for all of my clients for the past couple of years and it hasn't bitten me in the butt yet. (knock on wood). Malwarebytes is blocking access to the indicated IP addresses and just happens to tell you what port a connection was trying to be made on. Re: [Blind-Computing] Are all Java updates safe to install?
This viewpoint might spark some controversy, but unless you are using applications which require the Java Runtime Environment, you are better off not having Java installed on your computer at all. This would minimize your exposure to potential flaws and subsequent exploits in the JRE. I have been running my systems without the JRE for about two years now, with no issues. If you try to use an app which requires the JRE, it will tell you and you can choose to install it at that time. I have also taken this approach with all of my clients computers and have had no negative feedback, yet. I did not come up with this approach by myself. I got it from Steve Gibson via the Security Now podcast. It made sense to me, so I have embraced it and now endorse it. It will work wirelessly, as well as with a USB cable, which is included. The printer is small, light and prints fast. Since it is a laser, it will be much more economical to operate than a comparable inkjet printer. To setup the printer on your computer, all you need do is power on the printer and connect the included USB cable between the printer and a Windows computer. The setup program will automatically load and walk you through the setup process. You can then configure the printer for use with wireless, USB or both. I have run the setup program several times, using both Jaws and NVDA and it worked well with both screen readers. One note of caution, if you want to use the printer wirelessly with a Mac, you will really need to do the printer setup using a Windows computer. This will save you many headaches trying to accomplish this task on a Mac. Once the wireless is setup using Windows, you place the setup CD into the Mac to load the driver software. Now, the Mac will recognize the wireless printer and work perfectly. So far (1 week) my daughter is very pleased with the printer. Re: [Blind-Computing] Buying a printer
Hi, I just bought my daughter the HP 1102w laser printer, as she just started college. Re: [Blind-Computing] Looking for Accessible remote Access solution
Hi David, I have successfully used a free LogMeIn account to remotely connect to a computer running NVDA. I was then able to work on the remote computer with the NVDA audio coming through my speakers. In the past I had used the Serotek RIM product. It was very expensive and not very reliable and very, very slow. I was impressed at how responsive the NVDA audio was, over the LogMeIn connection. I tried using Teamviewer and it is quite amazing as well as free of cost. There are some accessibility issues that I'm working with and I'm not yet sure if it will be a reliable solution. Re: [Blind-Computing] jaws and southwest
I went to their site this morning and I agree with your findings. They must have made recent changes to the site which now make it very inaccessible with Jaws 10. This is very unfortunate, as the Southwest site was one of the model sites that I use when demonstrating accessible verses non-accessible sites to grad students in a Human/Computer Interaction class. I recently read that Southwest maintained a phone number to relay information regarding accessibility issues with their site, but did not save the number. Re: [Blind-Computing] looking for outlook 2003
If you have Office 2003, then Outlook 2003 will be on the install CD. Just rerun the Office setup from the original CD and select Outlook. If you do not have the original install CD, you will have to purchase a replacement CD from Microsoft, assuming that the copy you currently are using is a valid licensed copy. You can also find shrink-wrapped copies of Office 2003 on eBay for about $50. No, I did not consider moving to Office 2007. I am a light user of Word and Excel and did not want to spend the extra $$ to move to 2007. I will most likely also use Outlook 2003, as OE does not work with Win 7 and I have never found Thunderbird to work that well with Jaws. Dan, Are you running the same version of Jaws on both computers? Did the problem occur simultaneously on both systems? Do you normally use Firefox or IE? I experienced the problem with both browsers. It is strange that this problem only ever happened to me on the Google search results page. That tells me that there is something in the HTML coding on that page that is Tripping up Jaws with respect to the way it interfaces with the browser. At this point, I am just keeping my fingers crossed that this problem does not reappear on my computer. Re: [Blind-Computing] Jaws not reading in google, update
I must have too much time on my hands, because I try to keep a log of all of the changes that I make to my computer. This is a throwback to my old mainframe days. As I mentioned, this problem started occurring for me during March, 2010. I tried many things to resolve the problem, including updating from Jaws 9 to Jaws 10, with no success. On 9/1/2010, I removed Avast and installed MSE. According to my notes, I also installed the latest FS video intercept on that same day. I have not had the problem since then, but I don't know if it was the Avast removal or the new video intercept which fixed the problem. So my point, try installing the latest video intercept from FS and see what happens. I don't believe that it can hurt the situation. Re: [Blind-Computing] realtime antivirus & antispyware protection
Spyware Blaster does not run in the background. All it does is establish a list of prohibited websites in your browser. This prevents your browser from accessing these sites, thus protecting your computer from their malicious content. The only time Spyware Blaster is running, is when you run it to update the list of nasty sites. John - Original Message - From: "Lennie" To: Sent: Thursday, December 30, 2010 12:56 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] realtime antivirus & antispyware protection Hi Jackie, Thanks for the explanation. That was great! However, I still have one question. Would you consider Spyware Blaster to be running real time? I do believe that it is always running in the background and there is no way to do a scan of any type. It is supposed to monitor spywares while you are on the Internet. What do you think? Thanks in advance for any enlightenments. Take care. Lennie At 12:19 AM 12/28/2010, you wrote: Mike, u wrote: Hi Jackie; I am going to take this topic back to one from earlier today. There was a discussion about whether or not to run Microsoft Security Essentials & Super Anti Spyware in Real Time mode at the same time. In your professional opinion, if you were running both of these programs how would you run the 2? Meaning, would you run 1 in Real Time & not the other or, run both in Real Time? Mike, much depends on what the 2 programs do. Let me give a bit of background, & then perhaps, by way of that, address your question. In the not so very distant past, spyware & viruses were pretty much distinct entities, & the programs designed to protect the computer from each did quite different things. Antivirus programs tended to look for what's called "file signatures", e.g., certain strings in files that were suggestive of a virus, while antispyware programs tended to monitor things like registry changes, where the browser was being taken to, etc. That's fairly oversimplified, but the crux was that 1 antivirus & 1 antispyware program could generally run together in realtime w/o conflict. Malware has, unfortunately, become much more sophisticated. Viruses drop trojans which create a backdoor into your computer & allow all kinds of information to be passed to some1, e.g., spyware. Thus, the distinction between viruses & spyware--& other types of malware, for that matter--have blurred considerably over the past few years. The result is that antivirus programs have evolved to become antivirus/antispyware programs, trying to become, as it were, all protection for all malware, all things to all people, etc. The answer to your question is that it really depends on what the programs do. If the antivirus program confines itself to looking for file signatures, etc., while the antispyware program monitors registry changes & browser redirects, then it's probably safe. If, on the other hand, the 2 programs monitor for similar things, then conflict can & does result. The problem further arises when both try to quarantine something at the same time, obviously, & it is for this reason that malware experts suggest running only 1 realtime security suite type program, e.g., antivirus/antispyware program, at any given time. What I personally do is to run my antivirus/antispyware program (Avast) in realtime. Then I scan w/Superantispyware or MalwareBytes weekly or so, just to get rid of tracking cookies & other annoying nasties that may have popped up. BTW, 1 thing that can really help keep the bugs in check is to simply delete your temporary internet files often--lots & lots of crap-ola gets in there. So what I personally would do would be to run Microsoft Security Essentials in realtime, & let SAS be an on-demand scanner. I know some listers have run both w/o difficulty, but I can't help wondering what would happen if both try to quarantine the same threat--neither 1 might win & your protection may well be compromised. I remember getting this as a first exercise of my malware removal training, & this is pretty much how I answered it then, too, & passed, so hopefully it'll suffice. I hope I've made myself sufficiently clear, & invite further queries if I haven't. Blessings for a wonderful holiday season. I use MSE along with Malwarebytes Pro and Spyware Blaster. No problems here. I have a couple of questions regarding other spyware programs on her computer. She has the free version of SuperAntiSpyware and Spyware Blaster installed on her computer. According to the installation of MSE, it was recommended to uninstall all other spyware programs since I suppose that there would be a conflict. I think there should not be any other real time spyware running with MSE which SuperAntiSpyware is not. However, Spyware Blaster is always running in the background. Does anyone know if this really cause a conflict and running MSE scan would create a false positive? For the moment, both spyware applications are still on her computer and I would like to know what to do since I will be eventually installing MSE on my desktop XP computer with the two same spyware application on it. Did you try going into the Avast Internet Mail settings to see if there is something obvious that needs to be changed? You could also try removing Avast and then reinstalling it, just in case something got messed up during the install. Re: [Blind-Computing] run time error message
If there is an IE add-on that is causing your problem, then starting IE without any add-ons will allow IE to run without the error. Then, you will need to determine which add-on is causing the crash. If IE still crashes when you start it with no add-ons, then you have another problem. You may want to do a system recovery back to a point where your system was working properly. Try starting IE with no add-ons. Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>system tools>Internet Explorer with no add-ons If that works, then one of the IE add-ons is causing the problem. [Blind-Computing] Testing a .CMD Script
Hi All: I am currently working on a project which requires a .cmd script to determine if it is running on a 32-bit or 64-bit OS. I currently only have access to a 32-bit OS, but want to make sure that my script logic will work on a 64-bit OS. So, if there is someone out there whom is running 64-bit XP or Vista or Win 7 and would be willing to run a small .cmd file for me on your system, I would be very appreciative. The script is very small and will only display a message on-screen indicating if the system is 32 or 64-bit. Please contact me off-list, so I can send the file to you. Re: [Blind-Computing] Image restore quandary
Hi Don, If someone could come up with a way That would allow a licensed user of Image for Linux to merge it into Vinux and make a bootable CD, that would be fantastic. I haven't played with Vinux since version 1.2, but I'll give it another look. John - Original Message - From: "Donald Marang" To: Sent: Wednesday, October 14, 2009 5:26 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Image restore quandary Yes the DOS and Linux CDs both require that you provide a serial when creating the disk image. I have not had the guts to try a recovery using the Linux CD without entering a serial! Unfortunately, this makes it very hard to create a general Linux ISO that can be distributed that includes speech. Personally, I am planning to create a Vinux live DVD or bootable USB version of Vinux that has Image for Linux installed. This would provide full speech right at startup with a GUI, disk forensic tools, Open office, Firefox and more. Perhaps it would be possible to develop a Linux script (like a DOS batch file on steroids) to install Image for Linux onto Vinux. This would require that every user download the Vinux ISO image, burn it to disk, install it, run the script to create a new ISO, and then burn that ISO image to a disk. Installing Vinux on a second partition would be preferable, but many like me might install to a USB pen drive or just download the Virtual Edition. I hope this does not get too many people overly excited, because no one has made it easy to install Image for Linux yet. But if you are interested in this approach, you might want to check out working versions of Vinux 2.0 at: www.vinux.org.uk Don Marang - Original Message - From: "Alan & Terrie Robbins" To: Sent: Wednesday, October 14, 2009 4:07 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Image restore quandary Jon, I just created a DOS bootable disk and will have my wife go through it with me. Al, When you purchase Image for Windows, you received a serial number for Image for DOS. If you do not put the serial number in, the boot disk will only work for 30 days. Yes, you could attach the HD to your computer either internally or via an external case and then do the restore from within Windows. I will try to be as brief below as possible to explain my dilemma and hopefully find a simple answer that I am obviously overlooking. About a month ago I purchased Image For Windows and am thrilled with the program. I have successfully created and restored two different images with no problem. Here is my current dilemma. I have two Acer computers. I'll call them Intel and A M D so as to not confuse them in the below dialogue I'm describing. My primary in home networked computer was the Intel. The A M D computer as well as my wife's worked off this Intel unit. The computer had not been re formatted for about a year and a half and I also wanted to swap it out for the A M D machine which has a faster processor and twice the memory. I know the hours it can take to set a computer up from scratch so I figured I would simply take the hard drive out of the A M D computer and use it to set up the Intel computer as time permitted. The first thing I did was to use the Image for Windows program to create an image of the A M D computer. I then restored that image to confirm it worked prior to taking the hard drive out and using it in the Intel machine. I also created an image of the In
