Re: [Chevelle-List] Change over on brakes
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Tim, Generally speaking, the Camaro brakes are considered "tall spindles" (except the early years) and they will work as long as you don't want to use your factory upper control arms. The geometry will be WAY wrong, IF they even fit. The "tall spindles" will require the use of an aftermarket tubular control arm. This is very common in many of the disc brake conversion kits that are advertised. Not a bad thing to do, unless you get a set that are not good quality or the manufacturer is gone when you need support or service. Many of these use different ball joints than your 68 as well or at least that's what I've been told. I opted for a disc setup from a 72 Malibu for my conversion (66 ragtop) in order to retain the original control arms. I'm limited to rotor sizes, but it's not a track car. A big reason for going with the later Camaro spindles is that they change the geometry enough to give more flexibility with camber adjustments (I think it was camber, but maybe not. I can't recall right now.), and of course 12" rotors. Re: [Chevelle-List] Convertible top "tuning"
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List There is no better way to decide than to look at their work and talk to their customers. In your part of the country having a non-leaking top should be very important to keep the rest of the car from rusting out! Be sure to get a few BEFORE & AFTER shots that you can either post or email. I'd be very interested to see the results of your efforts...er, I mean funds. ;) BTW, will the $1200 be for a vinyl top or canvas, plastic rear window or glass? Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Cutting the coils should drop the car alright, but if they are old and sagging, why not replace them with a set of shorter springs and/or dropped spindles? Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Thanks for the not so good news. We are "interviewing" restoration shops that do heavy interior and convertible work. Met with a nice fellow yesterday who was pleased to show off the 57 bel air he had just finished. Primo work. He seems to know his stuff re top frames and their adjustment. The windows need a lot of adjustment too, so he would call in a glass man he knows with lots of experience. With a new top, he's quoting $1200. Good (or bad) thing about this guy, is that he is a lone wolf. He operates out of his set-up at his home. He does not have all the trappings of a businessman. He takes his time and is not really pinched for the time/profit perspective. We will look to see others of his finished jobs before deciding anything. Re: [Chevelle-List] The 83 gets de-smogged
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Hi Dave, I live in Akron(Summit County). They did make it more difficult than the original program. Typical, the junkers applied for plates originally and ruined it for everyone so the GOV made it more difficult. There is a "List" of qualified cars, performance/out of production, etc. that comprise the list. My wagon, go figure, wasn't on the list. I had to supply photographs, articles about wagons and receipts totalling over $5,000.00. Then it was up to their discretion. I passed. You can get the phone number from the license bureau to call Columbus and get the specifics. Probably can get it on line as well. Hope this helps. Re: [Chevelle-List] Speedo gear
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List > Frank: Do you remember what it cost to have your car modified/certified at > the speedo shop? It was quite reasonable, probably because I disassembled the dash so he could pull the speedo in less than a minute. There were individual costs * speedo gears * transmission disassmbly/reassmbly * fixing the actual speedo * certification The whole business cost around $100. Considering the nature of the work that seemed quite cheap. This was only a year ago. I had my truck done there too, and the cost was like $50, but I took the whole thing apart and handed him the speedo in a box. There is no doubt in my mind it would have been considerably more expensive if he had to do all the disassmbly and re-assembly of the dashboards. - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [Chevelle-List] Speedo gear
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Here's another page, authored by Fred Alrich, whose name I haven't seen around here for a while. http://www.corecomm.net/~faldrich/speedo.htm Basically, the page instructs you to go somewhere where you have a measured mile, and time your car to see how long it takes to travel that mile at an indicated 60 MPH on your speedometer. Using this info, you calculate the % error that your speedo is off, and he tells you how to choose the proper speedo gear (based on what is already in your trans) with GM part numbers included for TH400/350/Muncie/PGlide. It might not be quite as accurate as a speedo shop, but it sounds like a reasonable approach. these came with the car and i just worked on them to stop the leaks and get the sb running until the BB is finished. they are hookers (not sure which ones). they leaked bad. i took them completely out of car, took straight edge to them (pretty flat) , deburred them, starter side was a b**h to put back in, finding right combo for bolts was a joke and trying to tighten plugs was too (i don't think i have ever owned a set of sb headers that were easy to tighten or put plugs in). lol hell i don't even know if these were made to fit in a 65 chevelle but they are in it. Made the car run alot better, better gas mileage too beleive it or not. This made the chevy engine transplant much easier last december. I just have to hope i don't get checked at a motor vehicle checkpoint. Think it may be time to move out of NJ soon :) The funny thing is the 350 I dropped in the car has lower emissions than the 307 I took out of the car. Jeff: they aren't 65 heads but nothing different about them. I'm not sure which series they are. all i know is they don't fit worth a damn, had to use several different header bolts, custom fit my plug wires and put shorty plugs in. larry

The gear ratios for your tranny. Gear ratios; First; 2.48, Second; 1.48, Third; 1.00 I have learned a lot from the web site. I finally get the '66 out of storage, and now I bombard the list with questions! Here's the next one: I changed the gears from 3.08s to 4.88s a few years ago, and never changed the speedo gear. The transmission places around here say that there is a formula, but they don't know it. They want to sell me a few gears and just do trail and error. Maybe that would be fine, because it really doesn't have to be dead-on, but does someone know the formula? I have a Turbo400, and am running 245/60R14s. My '64 has Hooker Super Comps. The fit is not all that tight. Plug insertion & removal is a breeze. Starter fit was not a problem, both with a full-size starter plus heat shield and with a mini starter. No need for custom plugs or wires. My ZZ3 has stock L98 heads. Finding the right combination of bolts was tricky. I have an automatic and manual steering. Also I run the GW uppper A arms. - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

We removed everything but the computer. It seems to do fine with the stock Quadrajet and distributor, so if it ain't broke... The engine runs as smooth as silk now. We found a code on the motor which the neighbor says means it's an '88 Goodwrench motor. We thought since the fan shroud said 305 that it came with that motor, but it could have been from another car (I can't imagine a factory 305 with a one core radiator). Re: Re: [Chevelle-List] Need some info.
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List No, I haven't touched the engine.. The previous owner had just had the engine rebuilt before I got it... so I figured I'd wait until it died and then I'd be forced to splurge on something I wanted in there... well the stupid thing won't die :) It's worse than the energizer bunny... and I get unbelievably low emmisions every year when I have to run it through the sniffer. I could just go ahead and put a new engine in there, but I feel like I'm waisting a good, working engine... so I just haven't yet. The only thing I did do was replace the Rochester 2 barrel carb with a Holley 2 barrel 500 cfm carb... and that really improved the performance. As far as exhaust, I've had dual exhaust since I bought the car (too bad they're 2" pipes), so I dunno how much that makes a difference. I've been wanting to do the exhaust too, but I wanna hold out until after the engine so I can get the big 3" pipes :) Rodney. 71 Chevelle Phoenix, AZ - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, July 05, 2001 3:48 AM Subject: Re: Re: [Chevelle-List] Need some info. > > Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List > > > Rodney; > > I am putting my 71 back together.
