No problem Larry. I'll need the CID, intake type, carb CFM, compression, header description (big tube, small tube, mufflers, etc), cam specs (lift, advertised dur., lobe sep, intake centerline), and head casting numbers (if I don't have the flow info for your particular heads, I'll try to use something close). cYa- Herb Lumpp1966 El CaminoACES #3509http://web.tampabay.rr.com/herbsworld/index.htm - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, February 25, 2002 7:25 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Desktop dyno-ing Josh's 454 Hey herb: think you could run a motor for me? Re: [Chevelle-List] 17" Wheels
I'm sure someone on the list will post a nice picture to show how backspacing is measured. Basically, it's the distance from the mounting face of the wheel to the inside edge of the wheel. If you're planning on running a 10" wide wheel, I can tell you that 5.5" of backspacing (the same thing I'm running on my '71) will fit very well. RE: [Chevelle-List] manufacturing scripts & emblems
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Thanks Dale, but with all due respect, that's like the substitute teacher asking "who's not here?" I would rather have people tell me what they have been searching for and have not been able to find. It not only shows that the part is not available, but also that there is a demand for it. About those 300 emblems, I think the problem is that most people who have a 300 would rather buy SS badges than 300 badges. It sounds like something that would appeal to a very limited market. I like the idea of the SS 454 & 502 emblems though. I would need to have some for reference though. Anybody have one that they would be willing to loan temporarily? I also like Herb's idea for the 66 El Camino nameplate, and might have to take him up on borrowing that for a little while. The goal here will of course be to make exact reproductions. I am not familiar with machining terminology, so I don't know what CNC means (copper, nickel, chrome?). The plan so far is that if it was made out of pot metal originally, we will make it out of pot metal; if it was anodized aluminum, we will make it out of anodized aluminum, etc. etc. The guy is very confident though that he can stamp or cast just about anything, as long as he has an original as a model. His motorcycle emblems are very nicely made, and he also makes mechanical parts that are no longer available. John Nasta Old Car Network http://oldcarnetwork.com -Original Message- You might start with a good catalog such as YO and see what's NOT out there yet and ask about the popularity of those items - like Chevelle 300 or 300 Deluxe scripting. Might just be a market for those. How about 66 and 67 grille and rear panel badges of SS454 or SS502? A lot of guys are running a 454 or a 502 in later years as well. Take any year 396 badge and duplicate in 454 and 502. I think there are some 502 badges starting to show up, but probably not for the majority of years. Other possible numbers might be 406 or 468...I think the 383 is being done. Someone suggested (tongue-in-cheek) about "SSC" badging for "Super Sport Clone". Might sell, who knows? Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Thanks Herb, A good place to start would be to take a straight-on picture, and include a ruler in the picture. That would at least give me a sense of scale & the level of difficulty to produce the piece. Is it similar at all to the 1966 Chevelle grill emblem? I have a couple of those here. Josh, The only heads I could find that were similar to yours are the GM 702. They're oval port and have the same size valves. [Chevelle-List] manufacturing scripts & emblems
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I am talking with a machinist about manufacturing some scripts and emblems that are not currently available as repros. We are working on the first couple already. The guy is already manufacturing scripts and emblems for antique motorcycles, and his work is excellent. If anybody has been searching for a script or emblem that they can't find anywhere, please let me know. We will make anything that there is a demand for. So cast your vote to have your favorite script or emblem reproduced. For every piece, we will also need a sample to work from. So in many cases I will need somebody to send a used piece that we can use as a model (doesn't matter if they are weathered or pitted, as long as we can see what they are supposed to look like, where the mounting pins are, what color paint [if any] is supposed to be there, etc.). Those pieces will be returned, and we will give you a break on the repro for helping us out. [Chevelle-List] KB hypereutectic pistons...any feedback?
I was down at my machine shop the other day, and it seems that there ain't a whole lot in the way of big block 402+.030 pistons these days, ( except whats now custom jobs from jl/ross/srp etc., or in a 12:1 speed-pro ) Since we are about to that point, I need to get something, and was wondering if anyone is running them, and how they like 'em. I plan on adding a nitrous system, so I am curious as to how they would stand up. I would imagine if I could afford to drop a blower on top, these would NOT be the way to go... jerry 66 Cdn MalibuSS

Multiply that by 2 and add it to your 17-inch rim for total tire height of 25.66 inches. A 235-60-14 gives you 141mm sidewall (5.68 inches) times 2, plus 14 inches = 26.36 inches. Feel free to check my math and correct me if I'm wrong. John Nasta Old Car Network http://oldcarnetwork.com Original Message: --- OK thanks for the help. I have agreed with the 40 series, but what about 275-40-17. They shouldn't be much of a taller tire then 235-60-14 that I a using now, considering the sidewall difference. Hi, Sorry for the long post ! does somebody have a bellhousing lying around ?? if yes, please measure it trans mounting to engine mounting flange. I could also need to know the measure of the clutch pressure plate (flywheel mounting to the contact point of the release bearing) I have 0,4" less space than I should have to mount the release bearing. and I thougt that there might be some thinner clutches or longer bellhousings around. Re: [Chevelle-List] Rear Tire Size
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List John's math is right on for the 275/40/17, but according to the tire height calculator on Randy's Ring & Pinion web page, a 235/60/14 is only 25.102" tall. I know I've posted this link a couple times already, but here it is again: http://www.ring-pinion.com/calc-tire.html . This page has a nice collection of automotive calculators including a "tire height" calculator. Just type in the three parts of your tire size, such as 275, 40, 17, then click "calculate" and it will tell you how tall your tire is. I think this is especially helpful if you're trying to move up in wheel size but want to maintain the same overall height of your old tires. RE: [Chevelle-List] Still Undecided -- c-clip question
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I used Moser eliminators. I had to cut a small amount of the axle housing off(1/2 inch). The eliminators can be pressed on or some use the heat method. Heat the eliminator ring with a torch drop it on the axleshaft and hope it goes to where you want it. Once it stops it is going to stay. I have used the heat method on stock axles successfully. When I purchased my Moser axles I let them put them on before shipping. RE: [Chevelle-List] Upgrading to a factory high-torque starter?
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Hey Raj -- good thinking about using a lightweight starter from a common application. I haven't heard of anything like this in the Chevy realm, although I believe Corvettes started using Nippondenso starters in the early 90s, maybe even 1990. But being a Corvette part, I'm sure it's no bargain. -Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Raj R. Hey guys, I upgraded the starter in my 67 barracuda to a high-torque mini-starter and I'm absolutely in love with it.. I'd like to do something similar for my Chevelle. I bought my barracuda starter from the local autozone (application was an '88 Dodge RamCharger, though I think any late 80's would have done it) for $89.99.. Much better than the $150+ for a new one plus its a lifetime warrantied part.. My question is-- Is there a similar exchange for my 71 Chevelle? It's an L48 350ci motor so there's no oddball qualities about it.. Any late model Chevies use a gear-reduction starter that I can just pick up remanufactured at the local parts store? Thanks! Re: [Chevelle-List] Rear Tire Size
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List According to what other people have said, a 275-40-17 should have a 110mm sidewall height (about 4.33 inches). Multiply that by 2 and add it to your 17-inch rim for total tire height of 25.66 inches. A 235-60-14 gives you 141mm sidewall (5.68 inches) times 2, plus 14 inches = 26.36 inches. OK thanks for the help. I have agreed with the 40 series, but what about 275-40-17. They shouldn't be much of a taller tire then 235-60-14 that I a using now, considering the sidewall difference. Lojac - Original Message - From: Galen and Melissa Love To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, February 24, 2002 10:21 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Rear Tire Size Another point to consider: a taller sidewall (such as a 60 or 70 series) will deflect more and is more likely to rub the quarter panel under hard cornering. With that said, I wouldn't expect any clearance problems with the 275-60-15. I've got 275-50-15's on 10" wheels on my Chevelle, and they're a perfect fit. I trimmed the inner wheelwell lip on the quarter panel, and in 5 years time, it's never rubbed. The narrower, but taller tire will give more fender clearance. This will also affect the final drive ratio - something else to consider when drastically changing tire sizes.
