Boson worked well for me too, but I hardly consider $40 expensive especially
given the cost of others.

I don't think I could have gotten through my tests without Boson's help -
other than being expensive, what is wrong with them? I don't think I see a
cult here but I do see the proven track record and the quality name Boson
has developed for themselves. High price is a direct result of high demand -
simple economics.

Does anyone have a comprehensive concise list of IEEE 802.x
standards? I've gone to the standards.ieee.org and

something like:

802.1d - Spanning Tree Protocol
802.2 - Logic Link Control
802.3 - CSMA/CD Specifications
etc.

If anyone has something akin to this, I would be most
appreciative.

Thanks,

RE: Word of Caution [7:23363]

2001-10-18 Thread Jon Krabbenschmidt

Thank you!

Required reading for all those involved with customers should be: "Fabled
Service : Ordinary Acts, Extraordinary Outcomes"
by Betsy Sanders. I actually gave a copy of this book to some IT staff I
had.

A little story for ITPARADE:

Some years back I owned a company based in Ca. that did Network Consulting,
Distribution, and had some computer retail stores. I was visiting in one of
the stores when I over heard an argument between the retail manager and a
customer. I walked over and listened. It seems this fellow had purchased a
computer system for his family and was having nothing but problems with it.
He had brought it into the service center several times only to return home
and end up with the same problems. The sales manager was standing his ground
that the problem was the software this man and his family were installing. I
stepped in and gave the man all his money back and offered to cover his time
for the trips into the service center. I than told him that I stand behind
our product and I too, from the sounds of the problems, believed it was some
software. To prove this point I told him I wanted him to keep the computer.
He walked away with his money and the computer. I than worked with the sales
manager as I believe that there is no such thing as a bad employee only a
bad manager (me being the bad manager). Some months later I was requested to
join a meeting between our network sales group and a new client. Turns out
the president of that firm was this very same gentleman. He said that I was
right and it turned out all the problems with the computer were due to be
some old Disney software that his kids were loading. Because of his
experience with me he was awarding this several hundred thousand dollar
contract to my company and wanted me to know. I thanked him, but explained
that in this case I would not be so inclined to refund his money and let him
keep the goods and services! :>)

Listen up and learn ITPARADE

Jon,

Right on. I was trying to post the same response you did but could not put
it together. The amazing thing to me is that the older I get the more I see
of companies who do not follow the blueprint you laid out and instead go the
other way as this company at www.itparade.com has done. I was curious as to
whether or not this was a trend in customer service??

Anyway, great post Jon. In my opinion it is in very poor taste for a company
to hide behind technical problems to sheild themselves from common courtesy
and fairness. I won't find myself joining the itparade anytime soon..

It goes to show us that they are not interested in a long run strategy. If
they were they would be focused on customer satisfaction and relationship
building. It is common retail/marketing 101 knowledge that you make your
greatest return from your existing clients and that it cost more money to go
out and get new customers. Here it would have been advantageous to simply
issue a statement to Debbie explaining what they explained here AND said
"given our commitment to our customers we will honor our unintended
commitment". In this Debbie becomes a satisfied customer who will return in
the future and spend more money, and tell others here and else where about
her positive experience. So to save $400 or so the just lost a huge
potential amount.

RE: Memory [7:19758]

I buy my memory for all needs from Crucial. www.crucial.com
This same memory there is $18.89. They are a great company to deal with when
there is a shipping mix-up or part problem (which is VERY rare over the last
4 years or so).

shipping. The Cisco list price was $1900 for the same item. They build to
order using the same specs that Cisco uses. I'll certainly use them again.

I agree. It is not the responsibility of the Canadians to monitor people who
enter the US. That is the sole responsibility of the US immigrations and
customs agents. The last time I traveled back into the US from Canada I was

Leigh Anne,

Perhaps you can explain to me why you feel that Canadian authorities should
have spotted these terrorists, but you make no mention of the failure of US
authorities to spot them. Your statement is illogical and insulting to the
integrity of Canada.

This is an emotionally charged situation for people around the world. Please
take a minute to stop and think before you appoint yourself judge and jury,
and begin pointing fingers at _anyone_.

Need some advice with DOCSIS [7:12340]

2001-07-13 Thread Jon Krabbenschmidt

Hey all I am having a wierd quirk and thought maybe you all may help me find
an answer.

Thanks in advance for any help:

We've just set up a docsis environment with a CMTS including a UBR7200,
CNR (running on a an E250), and UBR900's as cable modems...the RF network
seems fine, and the cabling is cool.

The problem is that the cable modems are stuck between init(d) and offline
states...looks they can communicate with the UBR7200 fine through the
cable interface, but they cant seem to get to the DHCP server (CNR) on
another network (the cable-helper address seems to be setup fine though),
the DISCOVER packets cant seem to traverse over, the UBR sees them, but
cant forward them...the DHCP server and UBR are on the same switch, I
think we've narrowed it down to a routing issue, but I can ping the DHCP
server from with a source address of the cable interface's primary address
(but not the secondary)

Here's the running config less passwords and a show ip route command

College degree! It is the most important thing you can do. With a degree you
are assured a job of some sort, and if things get really bad you can always
head back for grad work and grow more. Certifications come and go, but the

Im in a dilemma. I need some career advice from some experienced
professionals and anyone else that has been on the same road.
I am 22 years old I have one more test (CIT) to complete my CCNP. I have
been planning on studying for the CCIE and taking the lab within the next
year and a half but Im not sure now. My problem is that I want to get my
computer science degree and I dont think I can get both and work at the same

time. I am about 2 and a half years from graduating. I also work 40 hours

a week as a computer tech for an elementary school. I have hands on
experience with cisco only in a lab enviroment, not in a production network.

I feel confident that I want to keep learning networking, but at the same
time I feel I am missing something by not having a degree and not having a
broader understanding of computer systems.
The longer I work and put off school I know it will be harder for myself to
get the degree.

Now I am deciding to go to school full time (after I save up some money) and

get the degree done.
I guess the only reason I feel hesitant about doing this is because I am
getting closer to getting the CCIE and that has been my focus for the last
year and a half. But I have been thinking about it and I think having the
degree behind me will help in the long run if I want to go into management
or if I decide to maybe get into network programming (which I know nothing
about but am kinda curious to learn). Part of me wants to get into the
field now, but the logical part of me is telling myself to wait and get the
degree. I dont want to get a cisco related job while going to school
because that will postpone myself getting the degree or take away from my
job because I am focusing on school. Any suggestions?

I felt your response was completely out of line, but you apologized before
you were publicly addressed. In my book that means the issue is settled. If
Luke had additional problems with it than that is between you boys and the
alley. Maybe I spent a little to much time in the hood as a kid, but when
some one has a problem with someone else than it is between those two
people. This guy Steve spent a little too much time with his head stuffed in
a locker as a kid and now wants to take it out on the world.

Steve: you were totally out of line. You, like Peter sometimes, need to
think before you act. When you disrespect someone behind their back like
that you are crossing some serious lines. The kind of thing that, "I am
sorry", does not fix

Peter: I have learned a lot from your posts. Please keep up the work. I
promise if I ever have a problem with you I won't e-mail your mom.

To all else I am sorry for this rant. Generally I lurk and learn, but I
needed to toss in my .02 worth. No change necessary.

OK. THIS IS OUT OF THE QUESTION.
I want to let everyone on this list know, that after a post I made to this
group today, the second post in this thread, i was pulled aside by my
manager.

The email, which i appologized for, was directed at luke, member of
groupstudy. in it, I jokingly had called him a "brainless peckerhead".
I appologize if this offended him, im sure he's a nice guy and all, but he
recomended a solution which would take thirty days to complete,

I AM NOT RECANTING MY APPOLOGY.

..However, my manager printed me an email from someone who fancied himself
more professional than I.

The email from [EMAIL PROTECTED] said, " I just thought that someone might
like to see how your engineers are representing your comany publicy", and,
then stated how easy it was to find my company's webpage, with the
information contained in my signature file.

Steve Brokaw, MCSE, CCDA, CCNP, had taken it uppon himself to forward the
email thread to my CEO Ken Mckinnon.
Steve had titled the email "A rude Planetary Networks employee"
At that point, copious amounts of sh*t began flowing downhill at supersonic
speeds. This, I do not think was deserved.

I Post constructively to this group CONSTANTLY, as i have for almost a year
now.
I do my best to help you people out.
I have even put labs together on my own time, with my own equipment, to
simulate problems and scenarios described by members of this group.

..Now, this email was in NO WAY directed at steve. I have not seen enough
posts from him on this group to warrant his policing of it.

Steven was kind enough to sign HIS message

Steve Brokaw, MCSE, CCDA, CCNP
Sr. Network Engineer
817-233-8075 cell

How nice of him. He took something that should have been addressed to the
group, and got up close and personal with my CEO.
"this is how engineers are representing your company"?
Are you serious? Steve, are you trying to get me fired?

Do you guys who post on this list regularly want to have to worry about crap
like this?
Do you want to worry that if you say something that pisses someone off will
come down on you like a jackhammer from your employer?
Are we babies? I thought we stopped tattling on each other years ago.
ESPECIALLY anyone old enough or professional enought to be titled "Sr.
Network Engineer" but then again, steve was the only contact provided, im
not going to say anything offensinve, and will stop right here before i get
in any more trouble.

Im not going to sign any more of my posts.

Of course, you could always go look at my email address and find my
domainname.

I called Steve today. I asked him why he had done this, his response was
"you were being a jerk"... And he hung up.
HOW PROFESSIONAL.
You wasnt disrespectful? how's being hung up on.

If anyone thinks someone else is at fault, YOU TAKE IT UP WITH THEM. NOT
MOMMY OR DADDY. This is not kindergarten.
We are all engineers, we should all be friends, and work together, we
shouldnt be getting each other in trouble.
Steve, at least I realize that i was at fault here, and appologized, but i
think that you have done is absolutely out of the question.
What goes around comes around, and i hope that one day, you learn your
lessons the same way I get to.

RE: Racks [7:7752]

I have several rack containers made by Engineering Packaging Corporation.
They are made of hard shock resistant plastic with 19" dual rail racks
inside mounted on shock absorbers. I used these for shipping pre-built head
ends to field locations. They have casters that mount on the bottom for
rolling around. Both the front and back open for accessibility. I am getting
ready to dump them on e-bay. If you are interested e-mail me and I can give
you more info and send some pictures.

Check the archives for music racks. There are lots of vendors. If you want
full size racks, vendors like Graybar and Anixter sell Chatsworth among
others. Very nice gear - but expensive.

Hi All,

I am looking for upgrading our Cisco 3660 router. However, the cost for the
128MB of Cisco memory susprised me. It costs like ... $5000.00 for a piece
of 128MB memory module for Cisco 3660. I wonder if it is OK to plug in a
third party memory module? Has anyone out there do this? Is it safe to do?
Which vendors do you recommend with good quality and cheap (or reasonable)
price? Thanks All!

What was your point ? That Multics sucks , and by the same token, therefore
Unix sucks and NT/W2K rules !!! At least, NT/W2K was based on a working
operating system. Anyone of you notice that Unix is all about ego ? If Unix
is finished in 1 month, why are there still people working on it ? On the
other hand, if Unix is perfect, why the hell are people working on it ? If
Unix promotes innovation, why is nobody using it ? Would you trust you ATM
machine to Linux ?

RE: another OT: why you UNIX guys look down on we NT guys? [7:6381]

2001-05-30 Thread Jon Krabbenschmidt

This reminds me of an argument my two boys, 3 and 5, had earlier this week.
On swore that their bike was faster. I tried to explain that there is the
length of legs, mechanics of the bikes, and age, (experience), that added to
the difference. I was making the point that the bikes, though physically
different, were in the end basically the same, (different platforms that
achieve the same purpose). Well I ended up walking away.

Last time I checked this was a group that was focused on network
engineering. Hummm this is OS independent. Seems to me our job is taking
all the stuff Sys Admins have, and all the stuff that Infrastructure has,
and all the stuff internal support has, and make it talk. We don't care
whether it is Unix, NT, CPM, Apple, or an old VIC20. Our job is to make the
stuff play well together.

My hat goes off to Alan and Peter, as well as some others, for their very
civilized, and educational discourse on BGP/OSPF. I can only hope to be
where these people are some day.

In closing... so since I am Unix, (Solaris), experienced and certified, AND
Microsoft experienced and certified, does this mean I need to run out and
get some Prozac right quick

RE: 2900 XLs and 3620's for sale

2001-04-04 Thread Jon Krabbenschmidt

I was referring to purchases I make at bankruptcy auctions where you post
your bond, and physically attend or work through proxy. E-bay is were you
sell the stuff bought at these auctions. If you can get to one of these
auctions you can find some great deals. Just make sure of the lot count
before you bid. You may think you are bidding on one or two and than have a
coronary when you pay and find the single bid was for a lot of 200 units.
Also remember to sit on your hands and do not scratch any itches when you
are in the auction. I have a friend who ended up with 500 COm21 cable modems
because of his sinus's :>)

Time to show my naiveti, are you taking about auction sites besides e-bay?
For the most part I've found prices from used dealers to be about what I see
on the e-bay auctions without the two week delay to see if I'm the high
bidder. In addition, the whole damn "minimum bid" thing is a pain. Anyway,
if there are better places to pick up gear, I would love to hear about them.
In the mean time I've been buying stuff from Brad at optsys.com - his prices
are good, the stuff gets here in good shape, and since he's right next to
the guy who runs CCbootcamp, he knows what I'm looking for...

Let me know...

3 2924M at $300 each
2 Sun Ultra 5 $700
1 Cat4000 with (2)X4148-RJ & X4012 for $800
3 2611 $600 each
2 2612 $400 each

The last two Silly.com Valley auctions I was at they were pulling stuff

Subject: Router Rack System - Help

Guys,

I am really trying to search high and low on the web for a sturdy, neat and
affordable rack system to place my 5 routers on at home, but have been
unsuccessful thus far. Can anyone out there help me?

I do not need anything too commercial because I have a small apartment and
already my wife is complaining that the bedroom looks like an office. I saw

something on blackbox.com but I am not sure if it is suitable enough for
routers. Thanks

RE: CCIE salary

2001-02-22 Thread Jon Krabbenschmidt

Add about 40% to 50% for here in the Silicon Valley, but than subtract about
80% to 90% of the adjusted total for the cost of living!

The thing is, nothing other than the CCIE cert matters...

CCNA = difficult to find a job
CCNP = around $65k annually
SUN certs = around $65k annually
MCSE = around $55k annually
CNE5 = around $45k annually
Notes certs = around $60k annually

Here's the catch: CCNP, plus SUN cert, plus MCSE, plus CNE5 = around $65k
annually.

CCIE = around $125 annually

The difference is that CCIE's will get higher end, network architect type
positions, while all the other certs will get you Systems Administrator jobs

that might also have responsibility for a router or switch or two...

Outside the System Admin circle, there simply isn't the demand for these
lower end certs. If you want to design and build large, complex enterprise
networks, you wimply won't get that job until you are a CCIE. If you want to

administer those networks and the systems that reside on them, then these
lower certs are your ticket to an interview...

This is the DC, Baltimore, Northern Virginia market mindset, but I expect
that things are similar elsewhere.

Hi All!

I am looking for your recommendations on a(some) good book(s) on Catalyst
switches. I have several 4000 and 5000 switches and want to get to know them
better, in addition to preparing for exams. All input greatly appreciated.

Had the same problem a while back. I ended up connecting my laptop directly

Can you ping the router from the workstation and vice versa? If so make sure
the tftp server is started and try copy flash tftp.

Hi again. I know the commands to transfer my flash to
the tftp server (as in Lammle's book) BUT it did not
work on my router. I got as far as where we ought to
see "" And it said: "Copy aborted.
Tftp Timeout."

I did install tftp on my pc, and gave it an ip
address, but never made a file to store the data.
Does anyone know where my error is?

RE: Business Proposal for CCIE lab:kick him

2001-01-20 Thread Jon Krabbenschmidt

Now who should be kicked??!!
Racism is an ugly and intolerable thing

Jim In answer to your question, my company pays 100% for departmentally
related training. For me they paid for my Cisco and Sun training. For non
related training, (anything, any subject), they pay 80% up $4000 per year.
You may need to sign a term of employment agreement were you will be
responsible for repaying a % if you quit within the term.

Hope that helps!
