[Cooker] beta 2 and jpackage
As you may have notice beta 2 is out, torrently available at qa.mandrakesoft.com/torrent. Moreover, you will now find in /contrib/jpackage the java based package from www.jpackage.org. Note however that some update to gendistrib is needed to have the hdlist in /Mandrake/base/ working correctly. -- Warly

CD drives can be mounted, and supermount works. See the various postings on this, notably Andrey's. It's a problem with the new IDE code in the recent kernels; Andrey's patch to change ide-scsi's behaviour no longer works, so we have ide-scsi default behaviour, which is to claim all ide drives that aren't otherwise claimed - so our CD-ROMs are being made SCSI as well as our CDRWs. Workaround for now is to add this to the append line in lilo.conf (or whatever bootloader you use): hdx=ide-cd where x is the letter of a drive you want to remain IDE. -- adamw

If I boot with the line: append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-cd hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off" Then hdc is correctly located as /dev/hdc once more (and supermount-able from that location). Rather odd. -- adamw

[Cooker] Beta 2 install issues.
1. / shows up twice when selecting a mount point when using custom disk partitioning. 2. Didn't ask for number of CD's ( like all other CD based mandrake installs ) 3. Buttons on the summary screen during the install are clipped at the bottom. 4. Could the cursor be focused on a text field when it's time to enter the password? 5. Even though select individual packages are selected you never get the chance. 6. Printer configuration issues. When configuring a printer it asks for disc 1 to be inserted but it always rejects it. Thus leaving a printer configuration that won't work if you are using a network printer. 7. Video card selection does not show the determined card without scrolling ( Rage 128 mobility ) 8. default font's in use on my A22p ( 1600x1200 ) for kterm are really odd. They are short and wide. Xine's aspect ratio is off too... 9. You never get asked to create a boot disk. -randy

[Cooker] Beta 2 X lockup with 3com USB cam
Hi installed beta 2 and forgot to unplug the 3com USB Camera. Install went through and looking at dmesg I could see lines for driver (with some errors) being loaded for the 3com USB PC Camera. The camera also had the led on (as being active) after the system came up. Now if I tried to launch X with startx I would get a black screen and the machine would be frozen (No Ctrl-Alt-Bcksp, nor Ctrl-Alt-Del possible). If I unplug the Camera X comes up fine. Just wanted to post this experience. Serge

[Cooker] beta 2 on sony vaio c1xd
Well, as I promised, I tried installing 9.0 beta 2 on my Sony VAIO C1XD tonight. First the bad news; Guillaume, 9.0 beta 2 install is worse than 8.2 when booting off the Sony PCMCIA CDROM, seemingly. It comes up with the "Press F1 for further options or enter to continue" screen, I hit F1 (because I want expert install with the necessary ide2 options for the CDROM to be recognised), the screen redraws entirely grey, and the system hangs. So that was a bit of a dead end. The good news, though...I booted from the pcmcia.img boot floppy instead and used that to install from the PCMCIA cdrom and the install went almost flawlessly, and just a couple of hours later my system is usable again - impressive! Problems - a couple of minor niggles first of all, first with the screen. Mandrake seems to be just a little step away from dealing with the C1XD's display perfectly. It's a strange setup; a 1024x480 TFT driven by a NeoMagic chipset. Mandrake detects and sets up the chipset driver perfectly. It doesn't quite get the screen right, however. Mandrake's XF86Config seems to have a correct modeline for the Picturebook series 1024x480 screen, however DrakX doesn't allow 1024x480 as a possible resolution choice. In the end I just cheated and copied over the fully working XF86Config I had from my SuSE install instead. DrakX also didn't setup both the USB mouse and the internal 'nipple' pointer correctly; only the USB mouse is installed. This kind of setup is v. v. common on laptops and should be looked out for, it's perfectly possible for it to work. My XF86Config is attached in case it's helpful for getting the Picturebook screen and this type of dual mouse-device input working. A problem / question; at the F1 screen is it possible to use two of the special options? What i'd like is to combine expert and vgalo; that is, do an expert install at low resolution. Since the screen can only handle 480 pixels vertically it'd be best to do the install in 640x480 res; it's usable at whatever res the 'expert' option uses, but only just (the bottom of the screen is just cut off). From the instructions on the F1 screen it *seems* i'm limited to either/or, is this actually the case? Now a kinda bigger problem; I had fun, once again, getting my wireless LAN card working. I have an ActionTec wireless card that uses the Prism II chipset; the orinoco_cs driver seems to be the best for this card. However, the version Mandrake includes of this driver, wherever it came from, seems a bit duff - I couldn't get a connection using it. In the end I had to install the freshest version (currently 0.12b) of the orinoco drivers from the author's homepage ( http://ozlabs.org/people/dgibson/dldwd/ ) to get a working connection. (This version of the driver has an updated hermes.conf, with extra card definitions including mine which I sent over to him; unfortunately the current release version has a typo in this so my card still isn't recognised automatically, you have to go into hermes.conf and add a missing quotation mark after ACTIONTEC . ) I realise wlan support in Linux is kinda messy, but wlan is very likely to take off in a big way in the consumer market soon, and it'd be great if Mandrake really pulled it together and supported a large range of wireless cards flawlessly out of the box. At the moment wlan under Linux is very much "read lots of stuff and hack it together yourself" territory. Time for another draksomething? :) I notice beta 2 managed to ship with the broken version of harddrake2 (the failing on boot was fixed recently but the version in beta 2 still fails on boot), i presume this is why it's disabled by default at the 'select services that run on boot' section of the install? Oh, P.S., whoever patched the GTK1 file selection dialog to not delete the current filename when you change directory should be awarded the highest honours available to mankind. [Cooker] Beta 2 for 8.2...console mode
When I am at work... I usually boot my mandrake installation into KDE and check email, write up reports, browse the webetc. But when I am ready to do development, I press ctrl+alt+F1 to switch over to a full mode console session so I can work with emacs in a full screen environment.legacy, I know...but all the developers I know do this too. In cooker 8.2 beta 2, I have noticed the Mandrake developers have added a white vga border on the left and upper sides of a full-console session. This not only reduces real-estate when working in full-console mode, but the white boarder is very hard on the eyes...making it almost impossible to work in. Now this boarder is fine for when the system is booting up, but not for working in. Please, please, please remove this boarder! This has been fixed in current cooker if due to MySQL, install kill any processes created between its beginning and its end (except from console, soon). François.

(hint: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/howtos/mdk-rpm/more-macros.html) DrakX has some code to clean such naughty processes, but it was not bestial enough, only killing part of the mysqld's. It's now fixed, and won't happen any more.

In particular, if it reports the "usb-uhci" module, can you try to manually modprobe "uhci" instead and tell if it doesn't lock anymore? The problem is, if time zone is correct (and it often correct is if correct locale has been selected) there is *no* place where "Set local time to GMT" and/or "NTP sync" are mentioned in summary. You must click on time zone to see them ... but if time zone is correct nobody clicks on time zone. So nobody even knows such options exist. [Cooker] Beta 2 Report....
For the most part installing worked flawlessly, however, I have a few issues. 1) Is there a reson that kdeutils and kdevelop rely on efax? Attempting to delselect efax during the install told me that both kdeutils and kdevelop would also be unselected. 2) The first time I booted, my home directory could not be mounted. (/boot mounted at /dev/hdb1, / mounted at /dev/hdb2, and /home mounted at /dev/hdb6) Upon further investigation, I found that the partition table had become corrupt. fdisk printed this warning: "Invalid flag 0x of partition table 5 will b corrected by w(rite)." During the install, I did not create or destroy an partitions, just changed the format of /dev/hdb2 to reiserfs, and /dev/hdb6 to xfs. (both were ext3 prior to that). 3) My USB mouse stops working in X after a resume. I have found that switching to virtual terminal, and then switching back to X fixes the mouse. I have since enabled the CHANGEVT="7" in the /etc/sysconfig/apmd file and this seems to work. Joe.

[Cooker] Beta 2 install report
Installing Beta 2 over Beta 1 on a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop 1) MandrakeUpdate doesn't segfault when selecting an update source any more. 2) The kdm login screen still has the default X background which seems to mess up the login screen. The proper color background appears briefly just inside the login box, not on the entire screen. Once logged in everything is fine. 3) The X Configuration wizard doesn't offer 1400x1050 by default, but it can be selected with 'show all resolutions. The XF86Config-4 ends up being properly set up... .nice going! 4) Power management is still horribly broken. Any power event, such as unplugging from the wall, causes a hang. darrell

[Cooker] BETA 2, audio anomalies
The new BETA 2 is a very smooth install. However, had to do an expert install to get my SiS 300 card installed. Perhaps choosing X version should be a choice in Recommended install as well. Also, KDE audio server is not working but the Gnome audio *is* working. Does running soundcfg mess up the KDE audio? Also, when running harddrake, display is tested with garbage at the top of the screen and system lockup--could not even ctrl-alt-F1. This could be because of limitation of my video card or monitor, or maybe some other reason. Found and configured Zip 250 drive on parallel port at first boot time. This made printer installation work after boot, also, since the printer is on the other side of the zip drive. So far, very good. Very good work. Almost ready to stick a fork in to see if it's done. RE: [Cooker] Beta 2 issue
I have also tried the Redhat 7.2 beta and it uses the 2.4 kernel and works fine on this computer. Any idea why the MDK 2.4 kernel doesn't work? Any idea how I can capture the output when it first starts to boot. As I said, it prints out about 15 lines or so and then freaks out. Those 15 lines go by so fast that I can't read them. [Cooker] Beta 2 issue
Not sure if this is the right place to ask this. I have downloaded and tried each of the alphas (Freq 1 & 2) and betas (1 & 2). Each one fails in the same way on my machine. On boot, it prints out a few messages (too fast I can't see them) and then proceeds to print row after row of soemthing like this: []. I am not sure if that is the right number, but that is the format of the value. It continuously fills the screen with these values until you reboot. This happens right at boot time, even before the kernel gets loaded. Any ideas? is there a switch I can pass on the LILO command line that might help? MDK 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, and 8.0 all work fine on the same system. Reggie

[Cooker] beta 2 install with scsi aha152x
Still no success with the card. on mdk 7.2 for the install was okay with 0x140,9,7,1 tried this with beta 2 and it hangs. looking at the console I can see that isapnp has found ava-1505a I did an install without specifing a SCSI interface and checked the isapnp settings in /proc and found the card was at irq 10. Now I did the another install attemp without changing anything irq it fails. Looking at the console it says that the irq might be wrong. So back to trying the settings I used before ... 0x140,9,7,1 still hangs but the console says aha1520x0 trying software int ... ok scsi0 adaptec 152x scsi driver: $revision: 2.4$ it sits here for a while and then prints aha152x0 timer expired and then prints a dump I don't know if this is related but I also have a matshita cd-rw (ide) and in the boot log I see scsi subystem driver revision:1.00 kmod:failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno=2 in case it matters /etc/modules.conf has an entry for alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi. after the boot lsmod tells me that ide-scsi, sd_mod, and scsi_mod among others are loaded. [Cooker] Beta 2 experiences.
Hi! I didn't get very far. I thought I would try the autorun.exe thing from Windows, but wasn't able to run neither the Install Guide nor the Tutorial because of a "Can't found any web browser on your system". Strange, since it's a Win98 with a perfectly functioning IE5. Could it be that autorun.exe is hard coded to look for English directory names? Then during installation I thought I'd try "Use the free space on the Windows partition", but everything froze at the "WARNING!" dialog. I couldn't click OK or anything. Yes, I did run Scandisk in Windows before installation and it reported no errors. After this I gave up. :) Mattias

[Cooker] beta 2
I just installed beta 2 and am very disappointed. I had the following problems. I tried both an upgrade from 7.1 and a new install. The upgrade failed because it could not read the partition table created by Mandrake 7.1 The KDE is unusable.. I have been running the betas that were installed to /opt for along time and they ran much better. KDE problem package manager will not run. So I can't use it for rpm installs. Iglooftp will not run under kde2 kmp3 will not run Thats all for now I will keep trying. I know this is beta but I had much better luck with non beta cooker installs. Please don't rush this out.
[Cooker] Beta 2 autorun
The current Mandrake 7.2 Beta 2 autorun.exe sports a "Linux Mandrake 7.1" titlebar.

When it is 'available' I hope you will announce to us where. -- Regards, Ron. [AU]
[Cooker] beta 2 issues:
Hi, new beta is mixed success and failure for me: - Installation and usbmouse: The mouse stops working right after its configuration. ( I went to console and "modprobe usbmouse" then the mouse restarted to work...cool... network configuration: I have modemcable and my ISP provides me with a hostname with the IP address. The config keeps ignoring it and keeps "hostname = default" That makes some process to fail to start! ( "no associated IP address with hostname "default" ) postfix; httpd; etc.. all fail to start. post install and running: linux-fb and Aurora seems to "boot ?" gracefully. it works find for me. ( very nice, cute.. by the way :-) Mouse: Now I just can't make my usb mouse to work!!! X (4.0l.1) can't find device and gpm can't too (" mouse: can't find device /dev/usbmouse: no such device" uh ? I do have this link (/dev/usbmouse -> /dev/input/mouse0), and lsmod displays usbmouse as well. its loaded...but unused. Thus, NO MOUSE at all. KDE2: beta1: I was complaining about KDE2 and its apps.. beta2: Now all seems to work fine. but can't do anything without my MOUSE !!! :( grr shutdown; reboot etc ... 100% failure. system hangs at "sending TERM signal ..." every time. - keep up the work. Its coming and very promising! thanks. Best regards, Serge Lussier

Hi, Just completed a Recommmended install with the Beta2 ISO. At first I tried the partitioning option "use free space on Windows partition" but it locked up the installer. The final message on console 3 was: wizlog>> not enough free space to allocate new partitions 251 < 1024000 -- Phil Lavigna [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/

Hi, Just completed a Custom install of ulysses-2-inst.i586.iso and it went well, just a few comments to make: After configuring X, the installer didn't ask to test the display settings but went directly to the window about a graphical login. After installation was complete and computer attempted to reboot, received error message: /proc umount failed /tmp/stage2 umount failed so I had to alt-ctrl-del to reboot successfully DNS wasn't setup after booting into the system even though this info was supplied during the installation's network configuration. Typo in the Installer's network window says: "I need to configure your network adaptater..." ^^ Should be spelled "adapter" -- Phil Lavigna [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/

In those cases i tend to postpone the answering until i find something. In that case, in the end, i just forgot it :-( sorry, maybe you could try the new cooker with the new mouse testing thingy... i don't really have a clue on that one...

Maybe this is your bug?
Re: [Cooker] Beta 2 available
I would add that the title of the popup window is always the same: those packages will be installed/removed (this may not be the real message, but i translated from french). So we don't know if the mentionned packaged will be installed or removed. Or maybe some will be installed and some removed ? A more precise indication would be nice here. Pascal Grosse
