Re: [slim] Long term SB3 user: very happy!

2008-12-03 Thread Fahzz

I have to concur with the sentiments expressed here, and add some of my
own. By way of background, I suspect that I am one of the more mature
(chronologically anyway) members of this forum, because when I first
became interesetd in hi fi it was actually called hi fi!
Obviously one major leap with respect to listening to music through
these devices is the accessibility of the material. These old eyes are
not as good at reading the CD spines anymore, and finding and replacing
cd's on the shelf was really a chore. The result was that a few
favorites got put in the changer, and that was it for a few months.
Now, like everyone on here, I have play lists of several hundred songs,
new, old, and from every genre.
The real improvement for me,though, is the SOUND. My wife and I have a
music collection going back to the British Invasion, and before that if
you throw in the jazz, and everything sounds like it was recorded last
Tuesday.I hear instrumentation that I never knew was there on songs
I've listened to thousands of times, and it has given me a whole new
appreciation for the harmonics and production work on these albums
(What DO you call an album these days?. Listening to music is more fun
then ever, and as result, the music is always playing in our house, and
that's the whole point,right?
My personal experience with set up and operation of the SB3 and the
Duet devices has been pretty much glitch free, and any issues or
questions I've had have been resolved by reading these forums.
Please keep up the good work, and happy holidays to all.

[slim] Cache/Preferences Cleanup

2010-06-11 Thread Fahzz

So I finally had everything just the way I wanted, and then like an

caused me to reset the router blah blah blah...

I ran into some difficulty, and I had seen references in the forum to

threw in a preferences cleanup as well.

Can somebody tell me exactly what a cache cleanup and a preferences
cleanup do, and especially what a preferences cleanup removes, so I can
figure out what I now have to reset?

Also I'd like to know the circumstances that warrant one or both
cleanups. Thanks in advance

[slim] Router Reset and SB3/suspend time

2010-07-21 Thread Fahzz

1. I reset my router in order to make it more secure. I changed the
password and some other settings. My Duet is now working fine, but when

I can't get any further. It gives me a retry or go back message.
Are there router security settings that have to be tweaked in order to
get the SB3 recognized?
I also recently updated to 7.5.1 and r8885 if that makes a difference.

2. I recall a standard suspend setting where I didn't get the please
wait wheel for a few minutes whenever I pick the receiver up. Can
anybody tell how to set it?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [slim] Router Reset and SB3/suspend time

2010-07-25 Thread Fahzz

Follow up: This might be elementary to some of you, but maybe I can save
some time for somebody trying to do a reset of an SB3.

I couldn't get past the choose language screen and tried several
factory resets (pull the plug, replace plug while pushing + sign) That
didn't help, so did a Xilinx reset (pull the plug, replace plug while
pushing #1). That got me off square one and to the network password
screen. Put in the password using the IR remote about twenty times, but
couldn't get the SB3 to be recognized by the network.

Some might remember what a challenge entering the network password is
with the IR remote. Well it still is! But this forum and the Wiki are
also valuable tools. It occurred to me that something was amiss with
the way I was entering the password, and I did come across something
about tailing spaces, which was the cause of my troubles. The IR
remote is tricky to use for this and it (meaning I) kept
unintentionally inserting blank spaces at the end of the password which
was causing the non recognition issue. You have to be very careful to
push the right arrow to enter it at the exact end of your password.

If you haven't had to do this in a long time, it's easy to miss,
because the error is not readily apparent. Hope this helps.

Re: [slim] SB release 7.5.3: Unreliable. Anyone else?

2011-02-20 Thread Fahzz

So when I saw this new update, I waited a week or so, and since I didn't
see anyone reporting problems on the forum, I gave in to temptation and
downloaded 7.5.3. Within hours my system started having various and
sundry issues, and I knew I was in trouble when I subsequently saw that
many others were in the same boat.
I rolled back to 7.5.2 (I think). The server says 7.5.2 but diagnostics
on the controller reads: Firmware Version 7.5.1 r9009. Is this what it's
supposed to say?
The duet is working, so something changed, but I also remember that
there were problems with and earlier update before 7.5.2. I don't
remember which one, and I don't want to relive that experience.
Can somebody confirm that I did it properly? Thanks!

[slim] Since this is the kitchen sync...

2011-06-21 Thread Fahzz

I've had an SB3 upstairs, and a duet downstairs for a few years. I
recently added a Boom to the mix, and I've run into some sync
questions. All the devices are always playing the same music, but the
Boom moves from kitchen to patio and back again, so I have to unplug it
and plug it in again. I do switch back and forth between SBS and My
Squeezebox.

First question: Is there a way to pre-set the devices up so that they
are always synced with each other, and I can use the Controller to run
them all?

Second question: I'm sometimes getting the echo effect, where one device
is playing a second or so behind the other. I've read through some old
posts on the issue, but what's the current wisdom on how to
prevent/troubleshoot this?

Thanks.

Thanks.
Follow up:
Do I need to sync the devices through the devices themselves, or
through the web UI, or can it be done both ways?
Does Pandora run through SBS or through My Squeezebox?

Re: [slim] Thinking about switching to Sonos (for a Restaurant)

2011-08-03 Thread Fahzz

This might be off topic, and might be inapplicable in your locale, but
bear in mind that there are music ownership laws that come in to play
when someone's music is played in public places(think jukeboxes), which
may require royalty fees to be paid. In the States the laws are enforced
by ASCAP, in Europe maybe BMI(???).

Don't want you to get an unpleasant surprise, and ignore this if you
already know.

Re: [slim] FW update SB3, broken remote

2011-09-20 Thread Fahzz

My SB3 remote has been a little unreliable lately. I can use the Duet
remote to run the SB3, but I worry about future firmware updates.

Can I set ONLY the SB3 to automatically update firmware somehow? I
don't want the server to automatically update if that's possible.

Or is there a way I can update the SB3 when necessary using the Duet
remote?

Thanks.

Re: [slim] FW update SB3, broken remote

2011-09-21 Thread Fahzz

Ok - so I can keep auto update turned off in the server, until I'm sure
I want a particular update. Then I just turn auto update back on, and
it will update all my devices including the SB3 firmware automatically,
and once that's all completed, I turn auto update off again?
Is this correct? Thanks.

[slim] Car stereo

2012-04-10 Thread Fahzz

If this is too off topic i apologize in advance, but I'm hoping someone
here can give me a credible answer.

I have a brand new vehicle (Yay!). The audio head unit will accept a USB
drive, and I now have 64 gigs of Mp3's on random play, which is kind of
like having Radio Paradise in my car.

The Mp3's are from various sources, and I notice a significant volume
difference between tracks, notwithstanding setting replay gain as album
using Foobar 3000. Does anybody know if car stereos read replay gain
tags? The members on the car audio forums don't seem to know about
replay gain.

The car is an Acura with a base Panasonic audio system.

Thanks.

[slim] Dead SB3 - Now back in business

2013-12-04 Thread Fahzz

First thanks to everybody in the forum for their usual kind assistance.

My SB3 classic was showing no signs of life. At the beginning the remote
didn't work anymore, and then the unit itself crapped out.
Seems I'm not the only one, judging by the many dead SB3/Classic posts
I've read. Those posts suggest two remedies = loose wireless card or bad
power supply.
I opened the unit up, and the wireless card seemed to be rock solid. So
I ordered a new power unit from ebay and sure enough the lights are
back on.
I bought it from hotdog...@aol.com, because the PSU was Logitech
branded, and they sell a lot of Logitech peripherals.
I couldn't convince myself that the problem was the power unit, because
the red light was on inside the SB3, but what do I know?
Anyway mission accomplished, and thought I'd share.
Happy listening!

2017-11-23 Thread Fahzz

Look at KEF Direct. The LS50's at $900 a pair are an absolute steal. 40%
off retail, and lowest price that I've seen by $200. I have them and
love 'em. Google them for reviews.

Happy Thanksgiving as applicable.

[slim] Reliable PSU Recommendations?

2017-11-24 Thread Fahzz

Had to replace the PSU on my SB3 Classic this morning. I bought three
generic units the last time this happened, so fortunately I had two
spares. I checked on Ebay to see when I bought them, and it was in
January of 2017, so the replacement only lasted ten months (!!!).
I'd like to buy another spare or two, and I'm wondering if anyone has
found a brand/model that is more durable. Thanks in advance.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Graveyard

2017-11-25 Thread Fahzz

My Condolences.

Yesterday, my eldest SB3 was seriously ill,and it looked like it was
terminal. No display, no sound, just a dim red light emanating from the
back. As a last resort, we tried a new power supply, and the result was
truly miraculous. Our home is once again filled with music and joy, just
in time for the holidays.

I agree with that. The Max2Play set up is pretty much idiot proof, and
I'm an idiot.

Re: [slim] Smart people will stay with Squeezebox

2018-01-23 Thread Fahzz

Thanks for the response.

Not sure if my SB3 still works. It went down two days before Christmas,
maybe due to a Windows 10 update, maybe something else. I didn't have
the time or the will to troubleshoot it.

I always wanted to get away from a separate server for a lot of reasons
(updates being one)and I thought the Node 2 might do that, but when I
got it, I found out that the direct USB function was limited, and they
suggested that I connect the drive to my router instead. That also was
problematic, and Bluesound support is only available when I'm working.
Again time and will ran out. It's expensive, but I would have kept the
Node if it worked out of the box, but it didn't.

I know that patience can be eventually rewarded by Squeezeboxen, so I
may try and get the SB3 back on line, or buy something preassembled, or
go the DIY route. Not sure yet.

Is a separate server still required to use these devices, or can I just
connect an external hard drive to it and play the tracks? Can it be
controlled with iPeng or Harmony remote? I'm interested in something
like this to replace my SB3. Bluesound Node 2 didn't cut it for me, and
I'm returning it. Thanks.

Re: [slim] What are your long-term SqueezeBox solutions?

2018-03-14 Thread Fahzz

Other forum members are using Raspberry Pi based systems. I was a little
intimidated about getting into this, but I replaced my SB 3 with an Allo
DigiOne Player recently. It uses Max2Play to run LMS and Squeezelite,
all preinstalled. Set up was ridiculously easy due to Max2Play's
instruction video. Max2Play help is good, but this forum is better for
questions you might have.

[slim] Synchronization Question

2018-03-19 Thread Fahzz

When I synchronize my Max2Play Pi Player to my Boom, do I use the
synchronize button in the Max2Play drop down list in settings, or the
Boom drop down list? When I tried to sync, Ipeng would only turn on the
Boom, and I'm not sure which is the correct way to do this. The Boom has
been offline for a while.
