[slim] Squeezeboxen connecting via external IP address
I sometimes connect to my Vortexbox library from locations outside of my home by connecting via the external IP address. What I've noticed in iPeng that concerns me, is that even when I am home and on WiFi my players will often times show as being connected to the external address (99.82.xxx.xxx), rather than the internal address (192.168.xxx.xxx). This seems to happen by itself. I'll switch the players over to the internal address, but the next time I open iPeng they'll show as connected to the external address. Doesn't happen everytime, but often enough that I'm posting this question. Does this distinction between external and internal address matter? Is the data being routed through my cable modem (out to the internet, then back in) when a player is connected to the external address? This would introduce a potential bottleneck, no? Re: [slim] Rhapsody not working on Boom
What version of SBS are you running? It sounds like you're running an older version of SBS (or LMS as it's called now.) If connecting to MySB.com updated your firmware, you're definitely not on the latest version. Or rather, you're not in sync with MySB -- I suppose it's possible you're running a future version via one of the nightly builds. (You would absolutely know if you were doing this -- requires tinkering and nerdery.) I'd try updating your Squeezebox Server and see if things start working for you. There was a Rhapsody change a few months ago that required a firmware update (and new version of SBS) on the older ip3k players. Re: [slim] Just 5 years and a bit less than 2 month Logitech has acquired Slim Devices
The Duet was my first Squeezebox -- and so while I can understand the bad name it has earned (somewhat rightfully, I admit) I am very grateful for that product line as it introduced me to the world of SB. It's easy to bash the Duet now, but keep in mind that it was launched only 6 months after the first iPhone was released, and certainly was out before the AppStore existed. Without getting sidetracked into a love/hate Apple thread, there is no denying that the iPhone has been tremendously disruptive. The SBC might look redundant or even silly today, but in a pre-iPhone world I think it makes perfect sense that Slim/Logi pursued a portable controller. I missed out on the pre-Logitech days, but I can say that it feels different now than it did in early 2008 when I started paying attention. The team is so much smaller now and new product development seems to have stalled. Although Andy's comments of late give me hope that there could be a revival upon us... Anyone heard what Sean or Dean are up to these days? It's unfortunate to not see them on these boards anymore. [slim] New Setup: Can't Access Pandora or Rhapsody
Have recently moved and am getting everything re-setup. (Top priority, of course, was to get the Squeezebox gear up and running.) Local music is working fine, but none of the players can access Pandora or Rhapsody. I have internet connectivity via my laptop, and even SuperDateTime works, so SBS is able to access some internet data. Here's the basic setup: AT&T Uverse - I don't like the flaky wireless router built into their gateway, so I'm using my own Linksys behind the gateway - This means I have a 192.168.1.x from the gateway and 192.168.2.x from the Linksys - All Squeezeboxen are on the 192.168.2.x (as is the SBS running on a MacBook) - Everything is running wireless, SBS 7.5.0 I think it has something to do with my double-router setup (the .1.x and .2.x addresses.) AT&T claims the gateway will recognize "router behind router" and adjust accordingly, and that seems to be true as everything else works with respect to internet connectivity. Any ideas why the Squeezebox can't connect to Rhapsody or Pandora? I have AT&T U-Verse service. Their gateway acts as an 100 Mbps ethernet and wireless-G router, I don't particularly care for this so I have the disabled the wireless on the gateway and have my Netgear 3500L plugged into it. Works great, mostly. I'm still using the U-Verse gateway as a wired router -- is convenient for plugging in the BluRay player. It'd also be convenient for wiring a Squeezebox, but herein lies the problem. The U-Verse assigns address on 192.168.1.xxx while my Netgear router assigns them on 192.168.2.xxx. Should these two be able to talk to each other? My VortexBox is on 192.168.2.150 (hard wired to the Netgear ethernet) and my Boom can't connect to it from a 192.168.1.xxx address. Re: [slim] Network Architecture Question
Let me throw in one additional wrinkle. Due to the physical constraints of the house, it may be necessary to add a switch to this setup. Wondering if such a network design is horribly flawed. The connections would be: U-Verse Gateway --> Netgear Router (configured as an access point) --> Netgear Switch --> Hard Wired Devices Both the router and the switch would be gigabit, the gateway is 100 Mbps. Some devices would connect directly to the gateway via 100 Mbps ethernet, some directly to the router via 11n, and some to the switch via 1 Gbps ethernet. None of the traffic is particularly demandind in terms of bandwidth -- squeezeboxen, internet, an occassional file transfer between machines. Networking is not my strong suit. Can I expect this to work? Would the slower ethernet speed on the gateway slow down the gigabit traffic between devices on either the router or the switch? -- ajkidle 2x SBR, SB3, Boom, Radio, iPeng ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77669 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] A Ripping Conundrum
Hi all. I'm a recent convert to the VortexBox platform, having built myself a little Atom rig. It works as desired except when it comes to ripping & tagging. I have a fair amount of obscure music and (legal) bootlegs that require manual intervention to get the tag data correct. As such, I find myself really missing dbPowerAmp and mp3tag in this new setup. I also believe the ripping methodology used by dbPowerAmp to be more robust (although we don't need to debate that here.) Looking for suggestions to bring these pieces of software back into my setup. At my disposal, I have the headless Atom rig and a MacBook (running Snow Leopard, if it matters.) I remote into the Atom with the MacBook either via ssh or the web interface if I need to tinker with it. Is there someway to get dbPowerAmp to run on the VortexBox machine? When I had an Ubuntu box I used Wine without issue, but given that VortexBox is command line only I don't know how to do this (if it's even possible.) Another possibility is to buy a copy of Win7 and use Boot Camp to install it on the MacBook, thus allowing me to run dbPowerAmp. This strikes me as an awfully complicated (and expensive) way to go about this. Suggestions anyone? -- ajkidle 2x SBR, SB3, Boom, Radio, iPeng ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77972 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I use the SuperDateTime screensaver on my Booms and SB3. Yesterday my router got reset, and since then it's not pulling any weather data. My concern focuses on the longterm availability of MySB.com. [slim] Time doesn't update with daylight savings
I run LMS on a self-made VortexBox - although I think the hardware is the same as (or very similar to) the original VortexBox appliance -- an Atom based MSI Nettop 100. The problem I'm having is that when daylight savings time happens and we gain/lose an hour, this PC clock doesn't seem to update. When the system reboots, the time shown on my Squeezeboxen is off by an hour. The only two solutions I know of are less than ideal: 1 - Log into the VB and force it to "correct system time" by connecting to an internet time server. This only works until the next reboot. Problematic if I were to lose power in the night... and my Radio is my alarm... 2 - Connect a monitor and keyboard to the system and change the time in the bios. The system is headless, so this is an annoying twice a year ritual. How do I check to see what time zone Fedora thinks my computer is in? I don't know why I wouldn't have chosen EST during installation, but maybe I skipped that step by mistake. I'll try the SSH solution - as I understand that, it's going to change the hardware clock to be the same as the systemtime. Still not the ideal solution, but it's easier to do that twice a year than it is to find a monitor and keyboard to hook up to the VB. Re: [slim] Usage of online services in your family ?
We use Rhapsody and Pandora ONE. Single accounts for the family, although it's possible that will change as the kids get older. Rhapsody's current offering of "family plans" is severely limiting and stupid. Currently I'm the only one in the family who really plays with maintaining a library, favorites, playlist, etc., so none of that has been a problem. Again, this may change as the kids get older. It would be nice if I could quarantine the kid music within my Rhapsody library, but Rhapsody's library management tools are already very weak. (Orphaned albums being the most pesky annoyance - stuff that was available at one itme, but is no longer for whatever reaon.) And I worry that material changes to library management on the SBS side would confuse how I interact with Rhapsody directly via my iPhone or PC. My dream SBS system would combine results of my local FLAC library with my Rhapsody library. And there would be some indicator that let's me know the source of the content (local vs Rhapsody.) I'd be okay with (and might prefer) seeing duplication - i.e., under Pink Floyd I'd see the the FLAC version of Wish You Were Here and the Rhapsody version of the same album. ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98198 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Why shouldn't I jump ship to Sonos?
Other than the fact that I love my Squeezeboxen, but as we all know that ship is sinking. (Has sunk?) My primary uses in order of importance are: Rhapsody, Pandora, local FLACs, and SuperDateTime. None of my FLACs are high resolution files, nor do I care about ever pursuing that. And my FLAC library is not especially large. Sync'd playback and sync groups are important. As I understand it, even if the community funded SB project is successful, that device won't work with services like Rhapsody or Pandora, especially after MySB.com goes offline ... so why not sell all of my Squeezebox gear while it still has some value, and make the switch to Sonos? Am I overlooking something? I've not researched Sonos too extensively - is there a weakness to their offering that I need to be aware of? ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98235 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Why shouldn't I jump ship to Sonos?
Thanks - I appreciate the perspective. And Erland, I've read your similar post on this topic a few times. The urgency is driven by the fact that time is running out. Today the hardware still has value. In the not too distant future when MySB.com goes dark or breaks, that value goes way down. And therein lies the "urgency", although I don't think that's really the correct word for it. After AndyG's recent post, I'm beginning to fear that by not acting now (or soon,) I'm just denying the inevitable -- and that ultimately I'll be left with 8 devices that don't do what I need them to, and are of little value on ebay or elsewhere. But enough on that - we can speculate endlessly on how much life is left in this product line. It might be months or it might be years, no one outside of Logitech really knows. What I'm really wondering is to hear from people who have used the Sonos system, and what their thoughts are. How does it stack up? I'm not a super advanced user, I just want to listen to music ... I want Rhapsody, Pandora, and my relatively small FLAC library to play. I expect gapless playback to work. And I need to be able to create sync zones that play independent of one another. Is there a gotcha I need to be aware of? Is the Sonos wireless bridge a nightmare to work with? As I assess my pros and cons, I'm looking for what is wrong with Sonos for the "average" user. ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98235 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

As an example, in the SB world I use Album Artist to group all of my soundtracks together, and then Artist to keep track of who is playing which song. Are you saying this will no longer work? I have to pick one or the other? In general it seems Sonos is a pretty good solution, although certainly not as open/flexible as SB. Given the path SB is currently on, I expect that will soon be an irrelevant distinction. Just have to decide now if I'm ready to lose SuperDateTime functionality... [slim] Vortexbox NAS hardware recommendations?
I've been running my Vortexbox on a headless Atom based MSI Nettop 100 box for the past few years, and recently have gotten the itch to protect my data by setting up a RAID 1 configuration. The on-board controller on the MSI doesn't seem to support this, and there are no expansion slots available for adding a 3rd party card, so I'm investigating new hardware. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm looking for something low power that I can tuck away in a closet somewhere. It just needs to be able to run Vortexbox, have gigabit ethernet, and 2 hard drive bays minimum (4 preferred.) Oh, and it needs to support RAID 1. Or at least have a PCI slot so I can add a controller card. ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98350 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

If my HDD fails, I lose my FLAC library ... which I have spent countless hours ripping, tagging, etc. How is a secondary back-up drive a more robust solution than RAID 1? Congratulations, Logitech. You managed to get 2 items on this list of 7. It seems you can create great products, you just don't know how to bring them to market. Compare the Squeezebox marketing to that of Sonos. In its prime, Squeezebox had a broken webpage. Sonos has a full-on flashy ad blitz that clearly demonstrates what the product is capable of, and why you want to buy a lot of them. Sigh. [slim] Rhapsody Implementation Needs Improvement
Love Squeezebox -- have a boom, a duet, and an extra SBR. Great stuff, when it works. And it does just that for my local music and Pandora. But the Rhapsody implementation has been problematic, on and off again, since I bought my Duet shortly after it was released. It's generally a "Time out waiting for data" kind of error when trying to advance to the next track. Most often happens on the first track of an album, but lately has been happening mid-album with more frequency. I know in the past the finger has always been pointed at Rhapsody for these issues. And granted, their service is spotty. Fine. But let's take that as a given. Their service is poor and unreliable, so find a way to deal with it. I can normally hit rewind, or in someway manually force the desired track to play -- so it seems the Squeezebox software could do the same if the implementation were more robust. I don't know if that's means allowing for a longer time out, or more retries, etc. but why do I have to do it manually? Is this deserving of a bug report? As an aside, does anyone know if Napster is more reliable? Re: [slim] Rhapsody Implementation Needs Improvement
Weird, maybe I'm the only one who has issues with Rhapsody. Can't understand how it could be my setup given that Sirius, Pandora, and my local FLACs play flawlessly. I'll give Napster a go -- although my first impressions are that it's missing some of the nice UI options that Rhapsody has, and the tagging seems odd an inconsistent. Maybe I'll get used to it over the next 29 days of the trial. Another issue I'm experiencing with Rhapsody is that it will cut out the last 5-10 seconds of a song and skip to the next track on the playlist. Not every song, maybe about 30% of the tracks I play. Maybe a buffering issue? Any ideas? -- ajkidle ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63462 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Rhapsody Implementation Needs Improvement
My point here is that Logitech should be doing more, and on two fronts: #1 - More robust code: 80%-90% of the time I can manually correct the playback issues by pressing rewind, or pause/play, etc. depending on which failure mode has occurred. If I can do it manually, the SC software can do it too. We just need more robustly written error handling routines. Of course it would be preferred to not burden SC code with this, but the reality is that Rhapsody's service requires it. And bottom line, I can't with clear conscience recommend a Squeezebox & Rhapsody combo to a non-technophile given its track record of reliability (or lack thereof.) Which brings me to point #2... #2 - Bang some heads together at Rhapsody: It's seems Rhapsody doesn't really care about (or isn't responsive to) the end consumer. There are threads all over these forums, the Sonos forums, and Rhapsody forums complaining about reliability, and they've been on-going for well over a year. The big-wigs at Logitech need to be taking this issue to their business partners at Rhapsody. It makes everyone look bad when it doesn't work. Although I wonder if this is just such a miniscule portion of Rhapsody's customer base that they don't care? Subscription based music is a huge selling point for Squeezebox. It needs to work. -- ajkidle ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63462 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Poor Quality Internet
I like to bring my Boom and SBR with me when we visit the parents, problem is their "high speed" internet isn't very fast or reliable. Both Rhapsody and Pandora require re-buffering frequently enough to make them unlistenable for more than a song or so. I've connected the Boom via ethernet (to rule out flaky WiFi issues,) confirmed there are no other devices eating up bandwidth, and still have problems with both Pandora and Rhapsody. To me, this indicates poor internet service. This same setup works fine at my house, on an 18 Mbps connection. When I go to speedtest.net, the numbers vary from test-to-test, but I seem to generally get: Ping = 70 - 100 ms (although once it came back at 1200 ms) Download = 0.7 - 0.9 Mbps Upload = 0.12 Mbps So my questions: - Is it unreasonable to expect to maintain a 192 kbps stream on such a connection? - How does the ping latency come into play? - Is there anything I can do from my end, without complaining to the ISP? I've tried increasing the "Radio Station Buffer" in SqueezeCenter, but it seems to have no effect. It doesn't even seem to buffer the amount I set it to. (Example, I can set it to buffer 15 seconds, and still experience 2 drop outs in a 10 second span of time.) Any ideas or suggestions for improving this are much appreciated. (BTW, streaming local stuff works fine.)
