If thats a proposal, perhaps Justin would like to send it to discuss@ so we
can discuss how it would work.

You can't just bring up during a meeting "I propose FOO" and never follow up
on it. What good is a proposal if the proponent doesn't work to push it
through and achieve consensus?

Written like that, it looks like we're not allowed to spend any new money at
all, including dues or donations.

Why are we picking Miami Foundation as a financial advisor?

2014-02-27 Thread a l
My understanding of the working group was that they would come up with
plans to suggest to the board and members as to hope to allocate funds.
This doesn't require a proposal since each disbursement would be a proposal
or board action.

Perhaps I misunderstood the intent though.

[SH-Discuss] Knight Foundation Grant Hold

2014-02-27 Thread Chris Egeland
Hello everyone,

At the meeting on Tuesday, there was apparently some misunderstanding about the
legality of our credit union holding our $15,000 deposit for a period of time.
I have done some research, and have found the following information:

First, everyone needs to be aware that we use a credit union, not a bank, as
our financial institution. Specifically, SYN/HAK is a member of BFG Credit
Union, headquartered in Akron. As such, the regulations that apply to banks
and bank customers do not entirely apply to us.

Second, the Expedited Funds Availability Act of 1987 classifies our deposit of
$15,000 as a “Large Deposit”, which means that over $5,000 was deposited in one
day. The federal regulations for requiring fund availability on deposits above
$5,000 is $5,000 on the second business day, and the remainder on the 7th
business day.

Keep in mind, I’m not an expert on the financial industry by any means. I have
just gone and done a bit of Googling to try to figure this out and make sure we
weren’t getting screwed. In my personal opinion, we aren’t.

Thanks,
Chris

It would be super cool to have a wall of photographs of our community members
with names so others can easily match names only ever seen on a mailing list
with real meatspace entities.

I've got a couple of photographs of the garage that would be pretty neat to

Becca and I decided that we'd like to paint some arrowish line things on the
wall, akin to this:

http://www.lighttape.co.uk/graphic23/subway-egress.jpg

Except a number of them that are different colors pointing to different
locations in the space at chest or eye level. I think it'd be neat to use
whiteboard or chalkboard paint on small sections of them for easy relabeling
in the future.

As long as they're just frames that are getting hung like a normal frame, I
don't think it'll get in the way much with some more painting on that wall :)

FYI

I'll be there around 3pm to continue work on both bathrooms.

If anybody has painting skills, they can paint the rear bathroom door. One
side has the first coat of orange, the other is ready to paint. Two coats
of paint are necessary. It is off the hinges, on a table, in the front
room, ready to paint.

I will be installing the new sink and faucet (thanks to Justin Herman!)
today.

Re: [SH-Discuss] new display wall of fame

2014-02-27 Thread Philip P. Patnode
G,

You may have mis-interpreted the form of the newly-created display wall.

It is NOT for people to draw or paint on, as in the photo you attached in
your email.

The display wall is meant only for prints, photographs, and other assorted
artwork, with or without frames, that can be hung or attached with
removable hangers. Items on the wall will be semi-permanent, subject to
relocating or removal to make room for newer stuff in the future.

I am hoping you will submit some of your great photographs in print form
and add them to the wall. You can get 4x6 prints at Walgreens for about
10cents each and larger prints at Sams Club for very reasonable prices. I
have an account at both places, if you want me to submit your JPG files for
printing.

[SH-Discuss] new display wall of fame

2014-02-27 Thread Philip P. Patnode
In the spirit of "do'ocracy" and a strong personal motivation, I want to
use the large white wall next to the kitchen, before the doorway to the
back room, as a display wall.

I will be hanging prints of famous scientists, inventors, programmers,
artists, engineers, Nobel laureates, and others on the wall.

The first three individuals to be hung (not a pun) will be *Ada
Lovelace*, *Alan
Turing*, and *Nikola Tesla*.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_lovelace

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla

I will try to add one or two color prints, with or without frame, of
notable individuals in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and
art every week.

I will also be adding photographs of SH members, supporters, non-members
and other assorted guests to the wall on a continuing basis.

I invite everybody to contribute to the display wall with prints,
photographs, and framed artwork that is appropriate to the philosophy,
purpose, and mission of SH.

If anybody objects to using the wall for this purpose, please submit your
objection n triplicate to me by personal messenger. The text of your
complaint must be on plain bond paper, in 12-point Arial type, with
citations and links, as necessary. It will be processed by a committee of
one and dealt with promptly. Be aware that frivolous claims will result in
a two-week stay in total isolation at the Re-education Camp for
Recalcitrant Individuals, located in a nearby, unnamed county.

Seriously, if you don't want the wall used for display, please speak up
now.

BTW, I will be providing the prints, frames, and photos that I plan to hang
on the wall at my expense.

2014-02-27 Thread Justin Herman
I have some pre-move in pictures of the space. Is that helpful?

I got a call from G a minute ago. The ABJ is showing up tomorrow at
2:30p to take some pictures of the space. Becca, Chris N. and I are here
 tonight BTW.

Re: [SH-Discuss] ABJ pictures

2014-02-27 Thread gs volt
It doesn't have to be clean, that's not the point of ABJ's arrival. Its
similar to what I've been doing on my flickr set here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/gsvolt/sets/

I've been collecting build pictures for this very moment - how things were
before and how they are now. As no future photo-journalist will know how
things were before, but has to have the option to use these image assets in
case they desire to use it.

Btw.. if anyone else has photos of 48 S Summit, please let me know.

In the end, it will be up to ABJ to use my assets or not, I hope they do -
I think there's some nice shots in my sets.

For our last article, I think there were like 5-6 photos that were used
