[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, Winter has come. The first snow fall was last Sunday and into Monday. Frost covers the valley most of the day. The sun is very close to the point where it will not rise again for another month. There is a mountain south of me and for a period around winter solstice the sun is too low to rise above it. I am seeing quite a few game birds on my trips up and down the mountain. California quail and ruffed grouse appear almost every day plus the occasional turkey. Propagation was poor this week. I had trouble with my sked into Oklahoma and the MARS nets were very tough. Some of it was due to being hit by the solar wind and the rest is either the season or the lack of sun spots. So instead of being on the air I've been working at the bench and on my computer. Hopefully soon I will have another printed circuit board designed so I can play with it. Since boards are not cheap in small quantities I am going to have it perform multiple duties. We did have a very nice week here. Sunny and cold but it looks like some rainy weather is coming soon. The moon awoke me last night because it was so bright. When that rain comes it will most likely snow at this elevation. The moon will light the snow and it will be even brighter in a few days. I will check the antennas' lines to make sure they are ready to support the load of ice they will soon accumulate. It won't do to have them fall when it is more difficult to remount them. But some say they work better if hung under inclement circumstances. We shall see :) Please join us tomorrow evening. [Elecraft] K3 CW CQ-WW impressions
In response to requests for K3 owners to post their impressions: It is summed up in word word, WOW!!! It's all about the reciever. I have three filters, the standard 5 pole 2.7, the 5 pole 500HZ and the 8 pole 250HZ. You can manually select the filters or just turn the width control. These filters along with the ability to "shift" seems to really work well with crowded band conditions like in this contest. Frankly, there were many pile-ups that my 5W just won't bust but I could sure hear well. There were many JA's just at the noise level but solid. I only managed one JA QSO.I like the built in audio equilizer. I have adjusted the RX audio to compensate for hearing loss at certain high frequencies I attribute to working on radios in B-52's in my youth.;-) Ever hear of a HF radio called an ARC-65, UHF ARC-34? I have not uploaded V1.42 of the firmware yet as I like the NR and it is disabled in this new release. The NR seems to work well in V1.41. Speaking of firmware and downloads, I have Vista, Mac 10.5 (Leopard) and Windows 2000. The down loader works very well on the 2000 with a real serial port. I gave up on the USB adapter and Vista after an hour of Vistaville. On the 2000 it took five minutes from download too upgrade. The release shipped in my radio was 1.31 on November 12. So firmware releases come about one a day including the long weekend :). On Friday 1.41 was the latest release. On the transmit side, the QSK works very well correcting a minor glitch I never liked with the K2. The frequency memory features allow easy storing and retrieving of frequencies (for those pile ups you just can't bust but may want to return to). The CW memory is easy to set and responsive. It may be me but I think built in keyer may eat a first dit occasionally. I switched to an external keyer more to my liking and taste. The transmit display tells everything I want to know, SWR, PWR and transmit and received frequency. I really like the display and VFO readout operating with split frequency is a snap. I really like the ease of use. I have used the CW auto tune feature and really like that on CW.The CWT feature gives a visual reference on his beat note compared to what you have set. Very handy in contests when the called station has his front end locked down to a few HZ and has filter skirts like El Capatian. K3# 69 has been working CQ-WW with 5W and a very modest Mini-33 on a roof top tower @35'. Q's on 20, 15 and 10. My wire on 40 is down at the moment. [Elecraft] K3 SN31's first contest
Hi everyone - One main reason I got a K3 was to be more active in DX and Contesting, now that I'm semi-retired. I used to be a very active contester in the late 70s early 80s and stayed in it mostly as a club activity since. I was introduced to logging software with CT in it's early days and still have a CT V10.x on the computer. I truly became tired of the amount of time I spent getting a rig ready for interfacing to a contest software etc. lot of rigblaster and other stuff laying around to help out, but never much satisfaction. With a working schedule it was too much and mostly went by the wayside. My K2 was an improvement and made the listening a lot easier. Interfacing was somewhat easier but still required a lot of homework and interfacing. At least with the K2 it was worth the effort. Ok, This weekend I had a choice of working in the orchard, with the fall cleanup and yet another Santa Ana wind condition - or - taking a two week old K3 and bridging the gap to get it set up for contesting in CQWW CWDX. I had become tired of CTs endless menus and tricky help files, still stuck learning CT. With CT if I don't use it 4 times a year it's a whole new learning curve each time. I started in earnest Friday about 2pm and decided to try one of the softwares in the Elecraft Web Page. I want to try all of them, but had seen a lot of reference to N1MM and chose that to start with. At first glance I was overwhelmed with the amount of info, but followed the getting started and Quick start guide to installing and upgrading the latest version. I was really nice to see that the K3 had already been formatted in the boilerplate. It gives you a sense of confidence it might work sometime this week. So, given about an hour to get the software installed and read the basics, I gave it a shot. The rig was already connected to the computer and had the latest upgrade installed. The RS232 cable I used is a standard 9 pin interface with all 9 wires hooked up. I set the K3 CONFIG: PTT-KEY to rts-dtr, set up the software config to match ( I changed data rate to 38400 and port to 8N1 for the K3 ) It took less than 20 minutes to get the rig on the air with a contest logger. What an improvement! CU in the contest, break time is over. Al WA6VNN **Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. Walt K8CV Royal Oak, MI. - Original Message - From: "Don Wilhelm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: Sent: Saturday, November 24, 2007 1:00 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Tuning knob revisit (Gil WA5YKK) Gil, The FT-900 knob is no longer available. You can add an FT-900 (or ft100 or FT847) tire to your stock K2 knob and add the Elecraft finger dimple too. The stock K2 knob has adequate weight if the drag is adjusted properly, but the sharp edge is a problem for me - the rubber tire helps dramatically - I don't care for the finger dimple, but many folks seem to like them. 73, Don W3FPR Gil Gibbs wrote: To those who dare - I'm in the middle of a mess, attempting to rework my whole QTH shack "upstairs in the big house", and in so doing, I enjoy firing up the Icom 756 PRO I have alongside the K2 which is now doing a better job of SWL than the Icom. The only real problem I run into is that the Icom tuning knob has some "weight" to it, along with a spinner dimple, which makes it easier to tune, and "faster" than the K2. I'm wondering if it makes any sense to attempt to find an FT-900 knob, or just figure out a way to add some weight to the k2 knob? And, yes, I've already looked over the Yaesu website, no joy at this point. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: K-2: AGC Threshhold too low?
Hi Bill, I haven't encountered any serious problems yet, other than the undervoltage on the AGC threshold test. I did have quite a bit of difficulty installing the tilt bail, but I think I just wasn't quite strong enough to push "firmly" to get it to go where it was supposed to be. It seems fine now, although when the bottom panel isn't installed, the tension from the tilt bail causes the panel to bend slightly. I hope that's ok! I have been a little bit surprised at the level of soldering skill required; this definitely isn't a beginner's kit! However, I've also been pleasantly surprised that I've been handling it without any problems; I guess soldering is a bit like riding a bike! I've done a couple of little projects recently, but prior to that, my last big soldering job was 20 years ago. A little patience goes a long way, too. Re: the wrist strap or mat, the other members of the list can give you better advice, but I'm pretty sure it needs to be attached to something you know is well grounded! I've just gotten to the part where I have to learn how to wind toroids... so I'm off to wind toroids now! Good luck with your build! Actually, my "cheap" analog meter did come from Circuit Specialists! I got it free when I bought my oscilloscope. Having now measured my bench power supply (not my precious K2!) with just about everything I own that measures voltage, I'm inclined to believe that the Circuit Specialists freebie DMM is telling the truth; it matches the meter built into the bench power supply. My other tiny pocket-size DMM measures about a tenth of a volt higher, and my analog meter from when I was nine measures about a tenth of a volt lower and hasn't been calibrated since about 1977. So at the moment, I'm going to accept the freebie DMM's results... unless somebody knows how many voltmeters it takes to establish a quorum... :-) But I'm still thinking that, sooner or later, it would be nice to have a "nice" meter... so again, if anyone can recommend one that isn't *too* expensive; I'd be interested to hear. Maybe a bench meter rather than a handheld? $100 to $200ish? And maybe something from Circuit Specialists, because, you know, if I spent more than $50 on my meter, I could get another meter for free! The problems they had in early production with shipping to promise dates are *not* unexpected, if you understand enough about the business they're in. In this, their size is a major asset, allowing a great degree of "overlap of sectors of responsibility". Everyone has involvement in customer support from this perspective. When I used the white blood cell analogy, it was because at several points in the assembly timeline, I was having multiple discussions with multiple Elecrafters. It was overwhelming a couple times. But very positive in terms of support - I think no one does it better. The K3 is worth the wait. Most things I've read about performance are true within my ability to check them out. The RX is quieter in terms of internal noise, and I've never had an HF RX that picks out weak signals as well as the K3 does. One example of this was during SS Phone. I was working stations that no one else was bothering with, only because I could hear them. I can't credit many of these with operating skill, since I'm fairly rusty. Some yes, most no. TX audio gets glowing reports too. I usually don't have to ask; the praise for the audio just comes naturally in a QSO along with the signal report. And at 12W with a long wire, the only challenge is being heard. Not many receivers out there have near the sensitivity or selectvitiy of the K3. And none have the BDR, which makes those other two specs worth having in the first place. IMHO, for most, it will be worth it to buy the K3/100 option. You can still operate QRP any time with the 100W held in reserve. The additional 10dB (1.6 S units) is enough to be heard under most condtions, even the bottom of the sunspot cycle. As soon as I can put together the $, I'm going for the 100W PA along with a couple more filters. One thing that Wayne mentioned that *resonates* is the roofing filter - that is the approach we take as to which to install (and in which RX). I'm using only the 2.7 KHz 5-pole filter, and haven't been disappointed yet. BDR was *still* much better than anything I'm used to. However, I'd recommend either 1.8 or 2.1 KHz SSB filters and 400 Hz CW, for contesting. That way - let 'em get close to your freq, and the only thing you have to worry about is being heard over them. The K2 is still my favorite portable rig (no, not the only one I have). You're right - a properly built and aligned K2 probably beats out most other full-size transceivers in terms of performance. Where most of the bigs stumble over themselves from one xcvr generation to the next, Elecraft has a history only of outdoing themselves. Having known Eric for a while, it is an attribute I've come to expect and respect. I respectfully suggest that we cut the Aptos gang a few breaks. They won't be laying down on the job at all, and will only continue to produce way-above-excellent results for all of us. The more overhead (noisy correspondence) the user base adds to their efforts, the more it makes it difficult to meet the targets they've set for all of us. 73, Matt - WA6EGJ K3 #24 > >- Northern California Contest Club >- CU in the 2008 Cal QSO Party 4-5 Oct 08 >- www.cqp.org > >Expecting my K3 sometime early next year [ordered in Oct]. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Toby: I'd recommend using a browser or an FTP client to copy the files from the Elecraft FTP server to a portable memory device (like a USB flash keychain drive, or a floppy disk). The procedure is described in the K3 Utility Help under "Manual Transfer". The FTP site probably won't many (if any) unnecessary files, so this is economical. The most striking thing I noticed initially is how quiet the receiver is. The background band hiss is very much reduced. In high contention situations (such as Sweepstakes SSB), the amount of "crud" you normally hear is greatly reduced. The effect is even more pronounced when you turn on the NR. You tune across silence, and then there's a signal. And another signal. I'm still getting used to it. I have an IC-7800 that is also pretty quiet, but the K3 is quieter yet. I have three crystal filters, 250 Hz, 400 Hz and 2.8 KHz, all 8-pole. I'm a contester. I've ordered a 1 KHz and 1.8 KHz 8-pole filter as well. I don't know if I "need" all these filters. But they're inexpensive enough that I'll take the chance on overkill. I'll probably purchase different (and probably fewer) filters for the 2nd receiver. [Elecraft] K3 findings
Jim My K3 is working well and I've worked plenty of DX with it this afternoon in the CQWW CW contest on 40m, the line up is K3 to an Acom 1000 linear to 1/4 wave fishing pole vertical with a 32' wire fed against 16 radials cut into the lawn. O/P is the UK legal limit of 400W. Best DX this afternoon has been China and Thailand. I'm not being too serious in the contest, just having a play. When I was thinking the K3 sounded poor on 40m CW, I compared it with my K2 and Kenwood TS-480 - it was down to variable band conditions and the K3 is the best receiver of the three. I also thought on 80m SSB the K3 was sounding a bit rough, then I did an A/B/C/D comparison including my Drake R4A receiver in the line up, there was nothing wrong with the K3 and even on 80m SSB in the middle of the morning it sounds better than the others. I had suspected DSP might have caused poor quality audio compared to the "pure" audio of the Drake, but it didn't turn out to be the case with the K3 sounding noticeably better than even the Drake. The audio effects (AFX) is really neat, you get an adjustable delay between each ear when using headphones - it sounds like you are listening to someone in the room rather than the usual "middle of your head" effect from wearing headphones. Transmit audio reports with a Kenwood MC-43S microphone have been very favourable. Transmit average power levels are good with no "overshoot" on speech peaks at full power or lower (checked on LP-100 peak reading Wattmeter and an oscilloscope). The CW waveform looks good with nicely rounded edges and again no overshoot on reduced power output, reports are good too. The manual and auto notch are good, I like the facility to manually notch out an interfering signal when on CW. On a negative side, the memories could do with a bit of work. I would have expected to be able to easily switch through the memories and listen to each one in turn, by rotating one of the VFO knobes yet this doesn't seem to be currently offered or mentioned in the manual (you select memories by rotating VFO A, but it doesn't let you listen to them as you turn the knob). Another item that could perhaps do with a little polish is the auto ATU, it's much faster at tuning than the one in my K2 but the rig seems to like tuning every time the button is pressed... I would have expected it to remember and not bother re-tuning when the frequency hasn't changed. I would also like to see one of the "PF" buttons being able to output a carrier at reduced level for linear and external ATU tuning. Both the memory and "PF" linear tune features are on Kenwood transceivers costing half that of a K3. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 = Those who have their K-3 operational I know you are probably enjoying operating the rig but can you share your experiences operating the rig, it's getting kind of boring hearing when people have ordered & no shipment plus the no email reply. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! (was [Elecraft] ESD recommendation)
That's why a connection to earth ground is recommended and important. It's often pointed out that it doesn't matter if everything is grounded as long as it's at the same potential. That's true, but connections to the earth are usually all around us, often in unexpected places. It's the same as the reason for not operating ac-powered appliances sitting in a bathtub. The water isn't dangerous. The fact that it provides a decent conductive path to grounded plumbing is what's dangerous, and deadly if the electrical appliance is not grounded and "hot" with mains voltage. RE: [Elecraft] KRX3 2nd receiver
I assume there will be standoffs to install, so the top and bottom covers will have to be removed. Based on where the KRX3 sits, you might have to remove the stiffener that runs across the top. Not sure about that. The benefit of waiting would be that it could be installed before the top/bottom covers are put on in the first place. On the other hand, there's not much work required to remove the covers. I personally wouldn't wait. I built my K3 when I received it, and have a KRX3 on order. Re: [Elecraft] Frequency Shift
Dave, A BFO shift of up to 20 Hz is to be expected. If you have 100 Hz shifts, then you need to run CAL PLL again - using Spectrogram if possible. Note that you should use a broadband noise source or band noise (with the preamp on) with no signals present. Attempting to set the BFOs with a signal present in the passband will result in frustration. See my article on K2 Dial Calibration at my website www.qsl.net/w3fpr for additional information. 73, Don W3FPR David Robertson wrote: Hi All, I am the owner of 2 K2s, one a K2-100 and the other a qrp model. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Minor irritation with K3 Firmware Loader, Version 1.0.11.21
Hi Thom, You get that message using the K3 software when the rig is not connected? perhaps it needs to be connected to the K3 to sense which firmware is installed in the rig...with no rig connected, it "knows" you need an update. Actually I get a message which asking COM port the K3 is connected to, which, by the way, makes no sense at all because my laptop does not have any COM ports whatsoever, as long as the USB to serial adapter is not connected. And then I get a message claiming there is new software available, even if there isn't. Repeat at least twice. Because the files are also stored locally, the Elecraft firmware loader "knows" if there is anything "new" on the FTP site, even without a connected K3, but you are right that a lack of K3 might be confusing for the application. If that's the case, maybe it needs a "switch" to tell it there is no rig there. The "Download from Elecraft without K3" button. Man, things have come such a long way from the days of using FTP to get an update, and not knowing if you already had it, or shouldn;t get it, etc. AMEN! It would have been really cool if Elecraft had used SVN in the loader and in the K3... vy 73 de toby -- DD5FZ (ex 4n6fz, dj7mgq, dg5mgq, dd5fz) K2/10 #885 K2/100 #3248 K3/100 #67 DOK C12, BCC, DL-QRP-AG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hallo How do you load in the downloaded fies when you arrive at the club station? The downloader stores the files locally, so you do not need a connection to the Internet while uploading to the K3. While one does not need to use the Elecraft application to download from Elecraft, any FTP client will do, it is a little bit "easier" to do this with the K3 downloader, because it automatically knows what is new since the the last download. vy 73 de toby -- DD5FZ (ex 4n6fz, dj7mgq, dg5mgq, dd5fz) K2/10 #885 K2/100 #3248 K3/100 #67 DOK C12, BCC, DL-QRP-AG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. My amplifiers are a QSK modified Alpha-76A that I could directly connect to this T/R line, but my other amplifiers...Ten-Tec Centurion and Ten-Tec Centaur have two options for inter-connection first is the single control T/R line but that won't support QSK (at least I don't think so), they also support KEY IN and KEY OUT lines for full QSK with Ten-Tec rigs (like my Orion or my Pegasus) but I can't see how I would use those with the Elecraft. Anyone out there using their K2/100 with a Ten-Tec QSK amp and if so how are you connecting the two together? 73, Jerry, KG6TT -- Ralph Jerald "Jerry" Volpe Amateur Radio Operator KG6TT FISTS 12304 http://kg6tt.tomorrowsweb.com 788 Chestnut Drive Fairfield, CA 94533 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 510 325-7724 707 399-8838 FAX ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
