Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mics

2012-08-15 Thread Tony Morgan
There are many other reasons that some people will purchase more
expensive components.
The cheapo computer headsets may work as well but some will buy the Heil
just because.
Yes two wires touched together will key your rig but some like the
beauty of a high end paddle
such as the Begali or the N3ZN. Nice to look at just sitting on the desk.
And yes, some people have more money than good sense.

Yes this is a very interesting phenomenon. Add external gazillion band
equalizers, compressors, noise gates, $30 connectors, fancy mike
mounting hardware et al to the mix. All to massage an under 3KHz
 bandwidth signal.

However it isn't just the phone guys. Some CW guys spent many hundreds
of dollars for a paddle. All it does is close two contacts.

I suspect in both cases the point of diminishing returns is reached far
earlier than these price levels. However, it is good for the economy.

Like an OT said; If you want to feel your have a strong signal, turn up
the monitor level. In other words, it's often an in the head game.

KPA100 (someday) in the top of the KAT100-2. This would require a
cable/connection between the KAT100/KPA100 and the K2. My plan is to keep
the KBT2 battery installed in the top of the K2. Possibly 1 or 2 quick
disconnects to make the transition to battery operated portable again. (Now
please keep in mind I know absolutely zip/nothing/NADA about the K2 or
radios, but I am an Engineerd). Do the folks who use their K2’s in the

the Heil adapter to a Kenwood type 9or create your own adapter. The

with the K3. Of course some of our fellows have questions from time to
time but I believe that most people get their amplifier to work just fine
 with the K3.

I should love to see Elecraft with successful amplifiers which were making
good money for them. I would be very sorry to see them bring out such a
major product which did not return its investment.

Maybe Elecraft will show us all again that they can beat all the competition
but amplifiers are a bit more basic. An old Heathkit SB200/220 can still
do wonders to raise the output a few dB.

you to consider the market into which Elecraft introduced the K3. Now almost
4000 of us have sold or retired other high quality transceivers for the K3.
It's excellent that many K3 owners already have quality amps that
function well for them. Many of us, however would like to purchase an amp

The mounting hole is slightly smaller than the K3
vfo b knob but could probably be carefully drilled out and made to fit.

 Dave,

I no longer have an 817, but I can tell you that the knob was definitely
smaller than the K3 VFO B knob. In fact, I increased the size of it by
installing a rubber crutch tip. :-)

You might consider a K2 knob. It will hang a little low, but other than
that it should clear everything else. The K2 knob is 1.5 in diameter. I
 put one on my K1.

Besides if you are an old poop like me and Ken who has learned to

I have my RS 35M on the floor also. I shorted it out once momentarily an
exciting moment. The problem is that the transistor cases that you see
sticking out of the back on the heat shield are at V+ level. If something
like a ground braid (this was my case) touches the transistors or the 12V
output terminal you have a short.

I ended up finding a cardboard box and cut the top and front off and most
of
the sides off. What is left is a cardboard back shield with lots of
ventilation to prevent accidental connections to the wire maze I have down
there on the floor.

the 100 watt version, or $16,000 for the 600 watt version. For those
prices, I presume that you can have it in your choice of color. It
looks like the 600 watt version is a better deal - only $2K more for
the 400 additional watts. ;-)

http://arraysolutions.com/Products/hilberling.htm#top%20of%20page

I hope Rob can get his hands on one shortly after they're released.

I'll probably be keeping my K3, however.

For relative newbies to CW such as myself, narrow filters
are a necessity. It's all that I can handle to copy code
at 18-20 WPM without the distraction of 2 or 3 other signals
in the passband banging away at my brain. I have noticed
that the real experts in my club often leave the filters
wide open and ignore the ones they aren't working, whereas
I have to narrow it down to at least 700 Hz to get clear
copy, 400 Hz is my default, and it drives me nuts when I go
down to 200 Hz and can *still* hear a second signal in the
passband!

Cathy

The example you give a wide open filter is a good
idea, once you learn how to process that info
mentally.

But... In search and pounce, I prefer relatively
narrow filtering.

Bob, that's a GREAT idea. As I think about it, I realize ...

I DON'T WANT A K3.

There, I said it. I don't want a K3, I just want an larger and more
spread out UI for the K2. I want a new front panel, bigger case, bigger
knobs.

BUT that ruins the K2 for portable use, now doesn't it.

So, your approach of a K2 docking station may be the better answer.
Plug in to the thingy and you have a larger UI. Unplug and your rig is
still portable. No PC to lug around. Now combine the large UI panel
with the 100 watt PA in a single case and it gets cooler yet!

How much? I guess I'm willing to spend $250 or so on a new front panel
thingy. I'm not willing to spend $1100 on a new rig.

The UK distributor (W S) has been very helpful but cannot find out from
the specs whether Ultimatic is supported by the cube, but confirms that
the Cubes in stock now now use a Jackson PK-4 chip in place of the PK-3.
I have as yet had no reply from Palm in Germany - this may be because few
people in Europe have heard of Ultimatic.

Can anyone confirm that the mini - paddle plus cube now supports
Ultimatic, and if so, how it feels in practice in this mode?

The trick is often in cutting or drilling it cleanly and squarely without
melting or scratching it, and in polishing the edges. The nice thing about a
place like Tap Plastics is you take a template or dimensions to the store
and in a few minutes you walk out with nicely cut, polished and even drilled
materials ready to use! They'll even glue up assemblies requiring more than
one piece.

It's a great service! I'd be very surprised it was only available on the
west coast of the USA. If so, I suspect it's a business someone could do
very well with in our do-it-yourself culture.

Re: [Elecraft] High End Paddles

2006-06-15 Thread Tony Morgan

I have the BY-1 the Hex Key.
I use a light touch on both.
Tried a heavy touch with the Bencher. It's hard for me to imagine
slapping it

around enough to mess things up. That's some heavy use!
Just my opinion.

I'll put it this way: the BY-1 is *only* good if you have a light
touch! The Hex Key will work fine either way.

Also worth consideration is the Bencher Hex key available from Elecraft.
I have the Bencher BY-1 and the Kent TP-1, both good keys but the Hex key
is much smoother. (IMHO)

Re: [Elecraft] high end paddles

2006-06-07 Thread Tony Morgan

Keith,
I would say yes. The Kent has a mechanical feel and sound to it (which
isn't necessarily bad).
The Hex key is much quieter and smoother in operation. The Hex key of
course uses magnets

which gives it a totally different feel.
The flex on the arms is not a factor if you don't slap it around. If you
are heavy fisted, the Kent
may be a better choice. I have quite a selection of paddles both iambic
and single and my

favorite is a Brown Bros BTL-A but that's another story. ;)

That sounds liks fun John.
My next project is to try /PM with the KX1.
Not quite as exciting but I worked VK9LNO last night with the KX1 and a
longwire on 30 mtrs. running about 3 watts.

I'm still amazed by the little rig!

Subject: [Elecraft] KX1 Mojo /PM

It started in FYBO 2004. I worked Paul W0RW in a snow pile in CO from my
snow
pile in MO and later found out he was /PM. What started? My thinking
that
someday I needed to stick a whip in my back pocket and try not to
electrocute

myself. Then I was running my K2, but now my KX1 is begging to go /PM.

Last night I finally got around to it. Hustler whip in back pocket. KX1
on AA

batts running full out at 2 watts. Sixteen foot drag wire and looking for
signals on 20. Dog Josey standing by just in case I saw a bear. You know
I've

heard they like /PM hams.

ATU tunes the hustler 1 to 1. Only one strong signal and he was chewing
the rag
on 14059. Was afraid that the band would die. Move up 1 kc and play
memory one
three times. Low and behold Chris comes back on 14.060 from PA. An 800
mile
/PM QSO MO to PA on 2 watts /PM! And of course Chris was running his KX1,
what

else?

Can't explain the mojo. Did someone say we were at the bottom of the
cycle?

How limiting will 5 or 10 watts (even with that Elecraft Mojo) be under

simple antennas will become rather frustrating? Is it K2/100 time?

I know, actually we all do. But to be serious as bad as band

My antennas are not much more substantial (if any) than yours. I have a
G5RV at 25 feet and a Butternut HF9V vertical which is ground mounted in
the backyard. To me it seems that if you don't spend too much time
concentrating on what you think are deficiencies; but go out with the

I'm using a Spiro sloper model VS-64.
Height is about 35' sloping to ground and using an 8' ground rod.
Gets me on 160 and the at on the K2 tunes the rest of the bands pretty well.
