[Elecraft] DVR & monitor function

2008-12-14 Thread Bill NY9H

The DVR works great ... yet I have a question or suggestion...

When I run SSB I have the monitor level turned to 0 ( off)...
and then I do not hear the memory playback
It is very strange knowing you are Xmiting, and not hearing what's going out.

Could there be a way to set a monitor level for the playback of the
memories???

different than the regular "monitor" level?

Am I alone in this "blind xmit" thought?

2008-12-20 Thread Bill NY9H

Thanks to the G; whomever it was,,, for the hint on the removal of the choke
( audio output mod).

That was to turn the set upside down ... use my fantastic solder
suckerthen drop the old part into the set . This rather than
having to remove the 2ndRX to get to that choke.

Then put the new part on the bottom. ... a 10 minute job.

(yes I remembered to get the old part out.) It actually fell out on the table.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: RF Clipper "works with Elecraft"

2009-02-07 Thread Bill NY9H
ever since I out a G3LLL RF clipper in my first transceiver,,, and
saw the difference...
I was convinced how effective RF clipping can be. G3LLL was careful
to indicate that you should roll off the bottom end... so as to not
totally overburden your powersupply with the extended "duty cycle"
using such a device on ssb. I have played with and still have
Datong, Daiwa, MFJ and TenTec's earlier rf clippers. When set
properly you will NOT get complaints of turn off that processor...
just compliments. Most recently using a slightly modified TenTec
version. With the latest iterations from Lyle on the K3...making it
'crunch' better, I will be soon be looking for new home for the pile.

google on "RF processing ssb"
something to understand and appreciate on the K3 or other radios.

and I HATE bad audio... nasty clipping effects, distracting distortions...etc

going for glorosio for 17 meters while split ...
I think i'd much prefer the front of the two concentrics to be AF
main ( bottom) and AF sub top
as I find myself constantly reaching behind to change the level of
the sub channel while hunting ..

someone recently suggested a menu setting to flip something to
attain the same goal.
having the balance in front .( i think )...or maybe both AFs in front .

AND yes I also peeked at the backplane to see abt a pcb mod... which
would be more appropriate in SW.

I reverted to another older rig where the two rcvrs have separate
pots and the af is in front of the rf
seems more intuitive and easier,.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noise Reduction..revisited

I have two "Hear-it" speakers from England's BHI company hooked thru
my microham controller's headphone outputwhich is connected to
the 7800 & the K3.

With a low- mid aggressive setting they don't sound anything but
quieter. (what a concept)... leave them in line most all the time.

No gurgling, whooshing... or D-Star audio emulations.
(Much better than the NCT licensed stuff Clearspeech/Heil now West
Mountain Radio).

Granted if I was using a GrandioseSweetness18" 3 way, I might have a
different outcome. Then again I could pipe it thru my UREI
"time-aligned" monitors.

40 years in the audio business.tells me the BHI algorithm is a
winner whatever they are doing ...I wish Lyle would do ( if the
DSP can handle it )
And I do know the existing design does it the other way .

Seems we revisit this one about every 118 days..

2009-05-12 Thread Bill NY9H

started out with sn#260,,, as a qrp /mobile/battery system in a pelican case
then added the KA100/ KAT 100 in an EC2 enclosure.
Then I perforated the front of the EC2 for two elipitical
speakers...on the front.
That also in a pelican case

then I obtained a sn#3200 k2/100 with external tuner.. for the
shack station along side an Icom.

The station K2 got replaced by a K3... so I need to figure out
which set to sell... or maybe both .

and this is how I ended up with 2 k2s.

Look around your piles of stuff, you might find something that fit
perfectly
for field day, this gray color might be great to highlight the
af/balance controls.

the position indicators are cut into the front face of the
controls, so if you can see the knob, you see where it is
set.(nice)..( now to machine them down a bit.)bil

If I ever finish them ( black anodize) I'll make pictures,,,

Right. Almost all problems have more than one component. In problems like
this one, the sum is the algebraic sum of all of the leakage paths.
Relays DO have capacitively coupled leakage. I think I'm hearing numbers
on the order of -60 dB, which is pretty respectable for an antenna relay
or switch. I've measured numbers on the order of -50 - -55 with the Alpha
Delta switches.

CONFIG:LIN OUT and sets the LINE OUT level (nor 10, for
example). You can safely insert headphones into the LINE OUT jack
and verify there is audio coming out. It will probably be low in
level, but present. To keep distortion to a minimum, use a level of
10 or less when feeding the sound card input.

Remember LINE OUT on the K3 is receiver audio from the K3 to the PC
and should go to the LINE IN connector on the PC soundcard. LINE IN
is transmit audio to the K3 and should come from LINE OUT on the PC.

If there is no audio at the K3's LINE OUT connector, even with the
level set quite high (50, for example), email k3support. If there
is audio, then the problem is not in the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 competition from Icom 7700? yes

2008-08-25 Thread Bill NY9H
Of course it is competition ( IC 7700 ), as some will buy it rather
than the K3.

It is however an apples and oranges comparison...

The 7700 has "dual watch" which is just like the 756PIII, much better
than no second receiverbut far far from a full second
receiver( it can't split the main & dual watch
audio, just vary the audio level between the two) still need the
7800 for 2 receivers.

The Pro3 is a great piece of product extremely well executed.
The Pro3 scope I prefer to the scope on the 7800.maybe the 7700
is different.

I use a "scope" on the K3 now LP-PAN &/or SDR-IQ works great.

As far a performance parameters...you can read,

nope, the jumper it is NOT between , as described in the manual

I sent this note to support :on July 16th,,,

the w4 jumper is NOT between the w4 jumper block and the Kio boards,
I kept looking to make certain i was looking at the w4
jumper(which I was)

and you do need to take out the general coverage board to get access
to clip it ( w4) cleanly... it went right into # 44

bill

And since it was contradictory to the instructions in the manual
i rechecked it a zillion times ... checked the schemo... then cut w4

For Ron I have attached a pix, which will get stripped by the
reflector for the crowd.
While there is a jumper located as described , W4 is just in front of
the connector.

if THEY had their way we'd be buying new radios every 120 days.

Thanks goodness this is NOT the computer industry.

We don't care about the sample rate or bit depth too much, but the data
needs to be obtainable by the computer in a manageable way, such as through
an extension of the existing CAT command set. Given the choice of modifying
their K3 or just plugging something into the back, I think most people would
opt for the latter, even though it would entail an unnecessary D to A and
back to D again step.

jumber soldered between two pads located between J64A and the KIO3 board.
My K3 RF board is Rev A. W4 is hard wired between two pads located between

   K3 filters

once for the freq and a second time if the mode is different

The ICOM goes to split and gets the vfo freq & mode , as one would expect.

For CW reception of weak 160m DX, I recently tried tweaking up the
RX EQ so that the sidetone frequency is enhanced and other
frequencies are attenuated. I think this works quite well as a
primitive extra audio filter. While the settings are great for CW,
they are no good (obviously) for speech. Does anyone know if such a
"home brew" AF filter CW response curve setting could be stored
using say PF1 button, and then be reset to a flat response using
say PF2? Otherwise it gets fiddly and time-consuming to keep
tweaking each of the eight filter frequencies.

This would be handy

a trick i learned was to pack the set with the bottom facing up .
This way i can use the tilt-stand as a handle to lower the set into

Likewise the tilt-stand becomes a handle to pull the set out of the foam.
Better than trying to dig into the foam which will wreak it .

Those VW solar panels, while only 4 watts or so will even fit into
the lid space.
I've cut little "drop-in holes for the palm paddle set and the gamma

Even I, notorious tightwad that I am, have forked out on an
anti-static mat and wrist strap. I've never used one in the past. But
I figured that if I zap something on a K3 board, which is not user
repairable (at least, not by me) it would be a much bigger deal than
if I zapped a discrete component when building my K2.

Fwd: Re: [Elecraft] Neat K3 Video! ....now agc

2007-12-03 Thread Bill NY9H

Guess there is an advantage to having an amp (like the ACOM 2000a)
that upon a fault condition like a bad coax,,,high swr shuts itself
into a "fault" standby modesuch as happened when i was feeding a
bad 80 meter feed line.
This rather than relying on an exterior component ( on an ALC
feedback line), or my LP-100 SWR meter keying loop.

The ACOM has both an ALC and a qsk loop thru, as does the TT Herc II
neither of which is connected. Nor has the lack of connecting them
with my Icom , or K2 (now a K3) caused an issue.

Everyones results WILL vary. As will their preferences...

I would imagine that after mentioning what you perceive missing or
what you believe could be done better two or three times , starts to
appear like lobbying
rather than offering your opinions. We know from eric and wayne's
previous work that they see and hear all our ideas...and put them
on THE LIST. After the smoke clears and they are past the obvious
things that need to be done, such as the second rcvr , am, fm etc
...then we should crank up the want list.

I will send this email to myself tonight, and maybe never send it out.
If I get feeling like I want to respond to a " you gotta change this
now " I'll send this out. Oops Must have sent it out for you to see it

The FT-897D has a modular (RJ-45) mic jack. This will require
obtaining the cable for a Yaesu FT-1000MP (Foster/8) and then
modifying the Foster cable.

How about a tiny interface box that simply accepts the two plugs
from the typical computer headset, with a ptt switch on it...and
maybe even four buttons to fire off the memories in the K3

( by then I hope Wayne has a way to plug such a remote memory switch
into the radio)

I course I do realize that all K3 owners could construct such an
appliance easily.

( I did this for my K2 portable setup, even had a radioshack memory
sound chip in the hand held controller) ...to keep saying cqcqcq qrp ny9h )

AKGetc.just look in mouser & digikey.

Ham radio is too small a market to make mic elementsHam companies
can assemble them; "design" them , and MARKET THEM TO HAMS YES...

Even Elecraft acknowledges this reality. they get them made, the
way they want...and are entitled to mark them up so they can "design"
& advertise, maintain inventory and MAKE HAMS HAPPY who want a
matching...esthetically pleasing solution. O Yes THEY HAVE THE
MATCHING CONNECTOR... which is called a "foster" connector ( the mic
company that supplies all those mics).

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Latest K3 Review on EHAM

2008-02-24 Thread Bill NY9H
as far as "audio crunch" I agree the current iteration is not
as penetrating as a good RF clipper could give it albeit it IS
distortion but deem favorable by many. KEY WORK : CURRENT.

Hard to believe that solardx contributes to Eham , yet is not on the reflector.
Perhaps by another moniker ??

Perhaps someone should find him and invite him aboard.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Noise Reduction

2008-02-25 Thread Bill NY9H

the BHI product is sold in the states by GAP
it does work better( my opinion) than the "clearspeech" product.

Hope I'll be able to determine someday that the K3 is/will be as effective
haven't been able to compare the two. YET.

Re: [Elecraft] ICOM ProIII price reductions // "The K3 Effect"

2008-03-01 Thread Bill NY9H

ProIII's can now be had for as little as $2384.10. I guess we could
call it "The K3 Effect"? As always, it's interesting watching the
market reactions to new gear.

I would think that the reduction of the P3 is rather traditional
marketing. As a product ages...and/OR nears it's end of life, a
manufacturer brings the product to a wider audience ... one that can
spend less...first get the big spenders, then bring the price
down to the "masses" .. it is a ton of radio for $2300.( enjoyed mine)

We did that with the TASCAM "portastudio" 20 years ago.
First you use some coupons, then just reduce the price...sell
boxes ,sell sell

Re: [Elecraft] Ducie Island - ARRL News Letter Excerpt

2008-03-01 Thread Bill NY9H

They said "The outstanding receiver and transmitter characteristics
allowed us to run two positions simultaneously on any band -- even
the very narrow 30 meter band -- with absolutely no interference.
Good design makes the complex appear simple: the ins and outs of
this sophisticated radio were quickly mastered by the operator team,
none of whom had seen a K3 before the expedition."

I think an important item to remember from the Ducie site:

""..7 stations on Ducie Island. Most (if not all) will have a KW amplifier.""

Same bandrunning a KW ! that adds a bit of DBs to the island.

WITH THE WEAK DOLLAR, I'll bet ICOM would love to catch up by
increasing the the 7800 10%..-15%. still not keeping up with the

10.600 X 1.15 = 12190.. ok maybe still not 6 times the price

guess that makes MY K3 worth more...

Re: [Elecraft] Switch box for key/paddles?

2006-12-28 Thread Bill NY9H
you might think about grabbing one of these AV switchers / videogame
selectors that switch video plus left & right audio... some have
rotary switches, some have pushbuttons...switching up to 5 different devices,

I've bought some very "inexpensively",,,usually at
fleamarkets/hamfests for 5$,,,

try ebay for "video game selector"...for 10-12$ shipped,,,
just hope they don't short any of the terminals when not in use like
an antenna switch might,

I have used similiar switches to switch between linears... even with
the key in , key out switching on some xcvrs/ampscombos.

happy new year

Re: [Elecraft] Quality Ham Headphones? WITH A BOOM MIC

2007-01-17 Thread Bill NY9H
Keep in mind, Labtec also sells boom mic headsets which takes
care of another requirement a microphone.
They are sold as computer headsets , but have a nice electret element
, just perfect for the K2 or icom radios. Some of the headsets even
have the nice leatherlike ear cushions...

Altec ( Sparkomatic , the cars stereo people bought the Altec
name for consumer products) sold a bunch of nice headsets... which
appear to be discontinued and sold off to some closeout houses...

http://www.costcentral.com/product-list/Headsets_Microphones/170/Altec_Lansing_Technologies/Z00396/

if you handy with a soldering iron , make a box to interface the
headset mic plugs to go into a 8 pin foster plug. That way any of the
computer headsets will be pluggable. The headphones will plug right
injust the mic plug needs to be adapted/interfaced If it is
an electret mic element ( and they usually are ) the level will be
fine!. My computer headset fits into my K@ pelican case for "vacations."
