OT: BESx and Java updates

2011-04-27 Thread Bill Songstad
Hi all. I'm sort of feeling like I'm caught between a rock and a dumb place
here. On the one hand, I've got my security guys telling me that Java 6 upd
18 that was installed by BESx has multiple vulnerabilities, and that I need
to upgrade it or remove it, and on the other hand, I've got the folks at
Blackberry saying don't mess with the included version of Java.

How are you other BES admins dealing with this?

RE: OT: BESx and Java updates

2011-04-27 Thread Alice Goodman
I stayed with update 18 as when I moved off of it BAS stopped working.

I am about to upgrade from BES 5.0.2 to 5.0.3 in the next few weeks so will see
if that changes anything with this issue.

dunno. will give it a go. just found this article hidden in technet.

It suggests that the Outlook 2010 requirement was only for Pre SP1. So that
could be my savior.
I'll try uninstalling the Outlook and running the import.

Hpefully my original assumption was wrong.

RE: to CDO or not CDO? or BESx with EX2010

2010-12-22 Thread Michael B. Smith
The challenge (of course - at least from my perspective) is that EWS doesn't
provide as many capabilities as the MAPI service. SO... they have some
challenges. I've migrated several applications from MAPI to EWS (c++ to c#) and
there are just some things you can't do in EWS - you have to use LDAP if you
aren't using MAPI. This makes some things much more difficult.

I won't disagree... I'm having a hard time determining who to dislike
more. MS for pretty much rendering MAPI useless or the vendors for not
keeping up with MS... It does piss me off that MS crippled MAPI support for
other software and they have no intention of going away from that plan. Had
the argument with my TAM, PSS, and others...

I wonder if MS' answer is gee, you don't need BES or RIM for that matter -
just expose your mail system to the internet - what? - can't get to your other
intranet servers? - just expose them too - it should all be open or
something...

I won't disagree... I'm having a hard time determining who to dislike more.
MS for pretty much rendering MAPI useless or the vendors for not keeping up
with MS... It does piss me off that MS crippled MAPI support for other
software and they have no intention of going away from that plan. Had the
argument with my TAM, PSS, and others...

import and export mailbox data

Assumptions:
MS requires Outlook 2010 on the mail store machine to import and export pst

Question for you BESX experts.
When you run the server virtual, ie, no USB ports, can you activate a handheld
by connecting it to my workstation, accessing the besadmin web page from that
workstation or does the handheld have to be connected via USB to the server.
Apparently I have some users that don't have the proper data plan and the over
the air activation doesn't work.
Thanks.

Any machine with the BES Manager for 4.1 or with access to the BESAdmin

We have a sister company that implemented it and they haven't complained at
all. Pretty quick to install and set up. Users were removed from my full BES

than using BIS or Http. And yes put it on it's own machine or VM.

My understanding (from the person that handles BlackBerries) is that BESx does
not require CALs and that is the reason it is desirable (as opposed to regular
old BES).

 provided on this scenario?

We have a sister company that implemented it and they haven't complained at
all. Pretty quick to install and set up. Users were removed from my full
BES and activated on their BESx and can't tell the difference. Whole lot
faster than using BIS or Http. And yes put it on it's own machine or VM.

RE: BESx?

2010-11-10 Thread Paul Hutchings
Just to throw one out there, we're looking at Blackberry right now though it's
currently not past the let's see if we can get some on loan stage.

Express is free other than tariff costs to have a Blackberry. Regarding where
to install it, my understanding is you can install it on the Exchange box for
less than 75 users, but it's recommended to use a dedicated box regardless
(apparently reboot the BES is quite a commonly proffered solution to problems
but that's anecdotal).

RE: BESx?

2010-11-10 Thread greg.sweers
The case for Blackberries over Iphone/Droid/WM currently is pretty straight
forward.

1.Security on the phone is hardened. Its tried/trued.

2. Management. There is nothing you cannot control about a Blackberry
from the tools. Droid, Iphone, WM, you have some semblance but not even close
to a Blackberry

3. Activation. Its easy. Ensure your provider has it provisioned. They
receive it, create the account on the BES box, give them a password or send it
to their email through the tools and walk them through it. Done. Very hands
off. Send one to the other side of the world and a monkey can activate it.

4. If you need to access files/folders or web sites on the same network
as the BES server without complicating VPN's etc. They can do it all from the
phone. Web access is built right in, files/folders takes some config work on
the BES box.

5. Wipe and ensure your data is gone. Cant guarantee that with any of
the other phones. If it gets the kill, it's a brick..

6. Downsides. Management..Server resources..Another app to babysit, when
it breaks..It breaks big..in my experience.

7. Free software, no cals required, free installation support, optional
tech support contract, does 90% of what you want to do. Big Daddy BES does
things with MDS, apps, tracking of SMS messages, compliance things mostly
etc..Things most of our SMB's don't deal with.

Saying all that we have 8 clients on BESx moved from SMB edition or
Professional. Very little issues overall.

Has anyone heard anything limiting about this product vs blackberry
professional? I read that it does not do OTA activations which is definitely a
negative but it's free and you can use it with just a plain old data plan (no
BES plan needed) which seems like a major plus.

RE: BESX Blackberry Enterprise express

2010-03-01 Thread Simon Butler
Having got my hands on the software - it is for Exchange only.

Fully supported with Exchange 2003, 2007 and 2010.
Fully supported installed on the same server as Exchange - which includes SBS
2003 and 2008. Fully 64 bit. Although there is an issue with MP3 audio files
when the server is installed on Windows 2008. It looks like for fully
functionality you have to install it on Windows 2003. That is a bit poor from
RIM.

The lack of the over the air sync applies to BIS based clients only. If you
have the Enterprise plan on the device then you can over the air activate as
normal.

You can also activate it through the Blackberry Admin Service.

The major limitation is the security policies - full BES gives you something
like 400, you get 35 on Express.

The documentation is here:
http://docs.blackberry.com/en/admin/subcategories/?userType=2category=BlackBerry+Enterprise+Server+Express+for+Microsoft+Exchange

It includes the full config and admin guide, plus an Excel spread sheet of the
policies available.

Very early days, I am working on an installation at the moment, and will
probably blog on it later in the week. However I have heard from Howie at
port3101.org that he has a number of BIS only devices working fine.

Simon.

RE: OT - Post BESX 5 SP1 MR1 upgrade problem...

2010-02-03 Thread Sean Rector
No round robin DNS - I only have 1 BESX server.

I stopped all services, renamed the 20100203 logs folder and rebooted the
server so I could get a clean set of log files. There is no BBAS_AS log file.
BB Admin Svc (and all BB services) running.

This was 5.0 MR4 and was running fine - up until I installed either or both SP1
and/or SP1 MR1.

RE: OT - Post BESX 5 SP1 MR1 upgrade problem...

2010-02-03 Thread Sobey, Richard A
You won't get anything until the BAS service is fully initialized. Typically
this can take over a minute in my environment. A useful way to see how far
along it's got is how much memory the bas-as.exe process is using - over 300MB
and you should be good to go.

If you still have no luck, try 1) reinstalling BAS on the same box (will need a
reboot as you have to uninstall it first) or 2) running up a BAS instance on a
second server to see if you can access it that way. If you choose (2) then I'd
stop the BAS service on your main box or you'll enter the realms of modifying
config files with TCP and UDP and blah blah pukes (e.g., it isn't pretty!)

Keep us informed of how you get on, I'm performing the very same upgrade next
week, albeit from BES 5.0.0 RTM.
