What is the problem with AbiSuite? I have installed AbiWord, as I need a
word processor which can read MS Word files - but the fonts are so ugly I
can hardly read them. But it has not changed font rendering in other apps
- those which were good are still good, and those which were lousy (as in
Konqueror) are still unreadable.

I made the change as above, but I cannot see any difference anywhere.

How does one learn about setting up a style sheet for konqueror to
override those from the web server? I am having a problem with some
style sheets from some '.asp' pages in konqueror.

Thanks.

[expert] kde 2.2 beta killed kdm and sound

2001-07-06 Thread Praedor Tempus

I upgraded from kde 2.2 alpha to the latest beta from cooker. All works
fine, and kde looks great but on both my laptop and desktop systems, kdm has
been killed. It wont run and doesn't start up after bootup.

I am still looking for error messages to indicate why but so far I haven't
found any. The second thing killed on both my systems is sound. My laptop
had sound working fine with kde 2.2 alpha, using alsa for the essolo1
builtin. My desktop is an AOpen AK72 athlon mobo with a via686a AC97 sound
unit built in. It too was working prior to upgrading to the beta.

I also upgraded arts with both systems. In both cases, I get a message that
/dev/dsp couldn't be initialized (wrong argument). Does kde 2.2 beta
completely change the way it does sound? Did the latest arts completely
change?

I got no unresolved dependencies when I installed everything yet kdm and
sound are toast.

Remove (comment out) the marked two lines and you will be the same as
me, and my ATAPI CD-ROM, -R, and -RW all work fine. Of course I
also have:

append=" hdb=ide-scsi hdc=ide-scsi"

in each of my LILO stanzas that load Linux.

I was looking for an easy way to do this and never found it. What I've
resulted to doing is to leave the account with no password (by deleting the
password field in /etc/shadow). This forces the user to set a password at
next login.

Re: [expert] kmod

2001-07-06 Thread Neal Lippman

I am using /dev/scd0.

My understanding of loadable modules is that when I try to mount the CD drive
via /dev/scd0, the kernel should detect that the driver is missing and, via
kmod, autoload sr_mod. That doesn't happen, however - so I need to manually
load the module which I do via /etc/modules so it is loaded at system
startup. That doesn't seem to be the desired way to do things, however -
because then what is the point of kmod if you have to specify everything you
want loaded in a startup script anyway?

Here is my /etc/modules:

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with
# a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored.

scsi_hostadapter
sr_mod
alias autofs autofs4

and my /etc/modules.conf:

alias net-pf-4 ipx
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1
alias block-major-11 scsi_hostadapter
pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
alias eth0 tulip
alias usb-interface usb-uhci

Anyone know how to clarify this situation?

Thanks.

RE: [expert] Are PCI interrupts allowed to be shared in 8.0/kernel2.4+

2001-07-06 Thread Kevin Krieser

My experience is it depends.

My sound card, a SB AudioPCI couldn't share an IRQ with anything with LM 8,
or RH 7.1, though it did under 7.2.

My Advansys SCSI card, which shared an IRQ with USB and something else under
7.2 gave me problems, as did my Adaptec 2940 card. And my second Linksys
card gave me problems.

OTOH, I just realized that I'm sharing an IRQ again with my sound card, and
it is working. Apparently, when I reset the BIOS after a recent flash to
support a large hard drive, it changed. And is working, though I have been
getting APIC errors and have been having heat problems.

I think it may depend on just WHAT is sharing the irqs.

For instance, I am currently running with the following configuration:

   CPU0   CPU1
  0:12403671273317IO-APIC-edge  timer
  1:888889IO-APIC-edge  keyboard

Then I try to build from source rpm. all go well (you
have to have the latest Glide header and library from

problem at all.

That's really interesting -- what version of Mandrake are you running? I've
got 8.0 here on a test box and when I issue this command, set the maximum
password age to zero, and log in as that user, it simply gives me a warning
saying that my password's going to expire in 0 days. When I set the '-W'
flag to zero, it logs me in simply with no warning (as if nothing was ever
done).

BTW, this is with shadow-utils-2826-5mdk

Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade to XFree86-4.1.0, but last time
I tried to use the Software Manager to get it from
cooker, it had dependencies including glibc, perl, and
eperl just to name a few. Once the upgrade finished,
XFree86 worked, but I had tons of perl errors
everywhere, even just typing perl would ask me to set
my locale settings?

Should I not use the MandrakeUpdate utility, just get
the normal XFree86 binaries from the XFree86 site?

Thanks,

compiled the quota utilities without this patch and they work.

[expert] LM8.0 rpmdrake behaviour

2001-07-06 Thread Jason Chaffey

Hi, everyone.

I am just wondering about something that is going on with rpmdrake.
My boss just came by asking about the effect the fetchmail update might
have on a problem that we have with kmail. (email with attachments get lost
in the aether when sent by kmail, but work fine when sent with mutt.)

Anyway, I told him that I didn't think fetchmail was installed since when I
did the updates this morning (fetchmail and xinetd) only xinetd came up
to update. Just to be sure, I did a 'rpm -q fetchmail' and got
fetchmail-5.7.4-5mdk
as a result.

I was sure I did not see this this morning, but maybe the server wasn't
updated when I got to it, so I started rpmdrake (as root) and hit
reload lists. Nothing new came up. So I switched over to the install side and
looked for fetchmail there.

Listed as installed was:
fetchmail5.7.4-5.1mdk
fetchmail5.7.4-5mdk
fetchmail-daemon   5.7.4-5mdk
fetchmail-daemon   5.7.4-5mdk
fetchmailconf  5.7.4-5.1mdk
fetchmailconf  5.7.4-5mdk

So I have the rpm command telling me one thing,
rpmdrake telling me two things, and
I am still sure that I did not apply the fetchmail update
this morning.

Are there two separate databases for packages?
Is there any danger in mixing the update methods?

Thanks,
Jason Chaffey

[expert] One-time passwd -- how?

2001-07-06 Thread x

I can't seem to find it in the passwd man page and I know this is possible
(at least in HP-UX), but I've previously been able to set a one-time
password for new users (or if they'd forgotten their passwd) where upon
logging in, they'd be prompted to create a new password.

That's kind of a thick sentence, but in other words, say user 'foo' needed
to get her passwd reset. As the sys admin, I do a one-time passwd change
for the 'foo' user to 'bar'. Upon logging back in and entering her new
'bar' password, the 'foo' user is now prompted to change her password. She
cannot go further until she enters a new valid password the system likes.
Does this make sense?

Anyway, I'd really appreciate any info on this because I know it's possible
(at least in HP-UX so I'm presuming it's possible in linux), but for the
life of me, I can't find out how.

Thanks in advance,

-Charlie

[expert] MandrakeUpdate

2001-07-06 Thread Kernell32

Ok this is getting too much now let me ask you a SERIOUS question .
Who got MandrakeUpdate working constantly ???
I didnt! Not in Mandrake8 and not in SNF either since MandrakeUpdate is one
of my favoured features of MDK i m a little upset about this i use Mandrake
over 1 year now i started with 7.1 then i used 7.2 for a very long time now
its MDK8 and SNF as firewall.
In version 7.1 and 7.2 i never had any problems but on MDK8 i got it to work
maybe 5% of all times i tryed . Mostly it doesnt show any updates at all
sometimes im surprised it works suddenly and anothertime after updating some
packages i see that the old versions stay and i suddenly have old and new
versions listed when i uninstall the old version the new one dissappears too
Do i see double or what ???
Well SNF shows me "empty list " ALWAYS .
note : It doesnt matter wich mirror i use sometimes it works sometimes not
and SNF never , btw. no the servers are NOT busy!
If someone has any suggestions how to fix this tell me pls.

maybe its just on Solaris that cp -a follows links. Hmm...
Yup, that's the problem. Solaris copy even read from pipes!

Sometimes using different *nices can be a problem! :-)

What device are you using to mount for a CD read? /dev/scd0, I hope.

If so, in 8.0 lsmod will show that scsi_mod has been loaded
automatically, and this in turn loads modules [sr_mod sg ide-scsi

Whether or not that is true I don't know, but I *do* know that cp has a

tar does not, so tar (and cpio, if you prefer it to tar) is better there.

[expert] X over SSH.

2001-07-06 Thread Franki

Hi guys and gals,,

After always using a console over SSH for years now, I was wondering if its
possible to use X over SSH...

I know it is, and I have some unusual circumstances..

I use windows 2000 pro on my laptop,, (long story, but linux really doesn't
like it much...)
anyway, I use Zoc client for ssh and it uses linux emulation, so if you run
a console gui (like mc) it looks exactly the same as on the box itself)

So I am wondering if its possible to have X running in a ZOC Window.

or is there some other windows package that I can use to do this?? it would
just be handy to be able to do that...

another question I have with regard to that though, would I have to open
port 6000 on the firewall or doesn't it matter since it would be "tunneled"
through SSH,,, (thats my theory anyway.)

I guess its not really necessary to have remote x,, since I use the console
for mostly everything anyway,, but it would still be sorta handy
occasionally

Has anyone done anything like that before

regards

Frank

I have had problems with reiserfs on LM-7.2. I was testing my
X-Configuration and as a consequense my system froze for a number of
times. I then had to reset my computer, and later I noticed that some
files could not be found by various programs, but they were visible
from within mc. I then had a small rescue partition from where I
managed to repair the corrupted filesytem. I could then access all
files again.

I asked a question on this mailinglist about Xlibs that could not be
found when compiling programs (this time LM-8.0). This turns out to be
the same problem.I was testing my Quakeworld GL RPM, and the computer
froze up, had to do a hard reset etc,etc. I had not changed anything
in my systems configuration, did not edit makefiles, did not uninstall
packages, but when I tried to compile, the Xlibs suddenly could not be
found by the linker. But ldconfig -v gave me this:

/usr/X11R6/lib:
libSM.so.6 -> libSM.so.6.0
libdps.so.1 -> libdps.so.1.0
libXrender.so.1 -> libXrender.so.1.0
libX11.so.6 -> libX11.so.6.2
libGLU.so.1 -> libGLU.so.1.2.030401
libXbae.so.4 -> libXbae.so.4.0.8
libXi.so.6 -> libXi.so.6.0
libPEX5.so.6 -> libPEX5.so.6.0
libpsres.so.1 -> libpsres.so.1.0
libdpstk.so.1 -> libdpstk.so.1.0
libXaw.so.7 -> libXaw.so.7.0
libXaw.so.6 -> libXaw.so.6.1
libXIE.so.6 -> libXIE.so.6.0
libXfont.so.1 -> libXfont.so.1.3
libxrx.so.6 -> libxrx.so.6.3
libXpm.so.4 -> libXpm.so.4.11
libXaw3d.so.7 -> libXaw3d.so.7.0
libforms.so.0.88 -> libforms.so.0.88
libglut.so.3 -> libglut.so.3.7.0
libXext.so.6 -> libXext.so.6.4
libXft.so.1 -> libXft.so.1.0
libICE.so.6 -> libICE.so.6.3
libXtst.so.6 -> libXtst.so.6.1
libXt.so.6 -> libXt.so.6.0
libOSMesa.so.3 -> libOSMesa.so.3.3
libfont.so.1 -> libfont.so.1.3
libXp.so.6 -> libXp.so.6.2
libGL.so.1 -> libGLwrapper.so.0.1.4
libXlt.so.0 -> libXlt.so.0.8.0
libXmu.so.6 -> libXmu.so.6.2

This time I had no rescue partition because LM-8.0 wouldn't install on
a 150 MB partition :-(. So I was asking for a reiserfs-rescue flop via
this mailing list. The MDK-Install CD worked. I did a

'reiserfsck --check /dev/hda5' which reported:

free block count 67300 mismatches with a correct one 69489.
on-disk bitmap does not match to the correct one. 589 bytes differ

Then I did:
'reiserfsck --rebuild-sb /dev/hda5'
'reiserfsck --rebuild-tree /dev/hda5'

It froze on the 2nd pass from --rebuild-tree at about 60%.
After that I had no root partition anymore. I never encountered these
problems when using ext2fs (been using Linux for 2 and a half years now).

So, I think that people who have to shutdown, reboot and reset a lot
(desktop users) should refrain from using reiserfs and just stick to
ext2fs. I don't know about XFS though, I never used it.

Re: [expert] FONTS im getting tired of this

Konqueror will use the fonts specified in the web page or its associated style
sheet (CSS). You will need to find a solution that overrides this. Maybe you
could set up your own style sheet, or possible use the accessability stylesheet,
which allows you to set base font sizes, etc. Look in kcontrol->Web
Browsing->Style Sheets.

I guess there are other solutions, like aliasing bad looking fonts for good
looking ones in xftconfig or else where.

Nick.

[expert] FONTS im getting tired of this

2001-07-06 Thread Kernell32

Hi i have fixed the fonts as suggested on muo and other pages yep my fonts in
kde look very nice everywhere in kde, in the kde control panel i have them
almost default most are helvetica and they look good on the desktop toolbars
etc. really nice!
Also in kmail and other kde apps nothing to complain .
Only konqueror messes them up i dont understand that, i followed all
instructions to fix that and in konqueror webbrowser i use the same font as
anywhere else helvetica and minimum font size 12 and as soon as i go to a
webpage ie: http://neworder.box.sk the fonts look messed up almost anarectik.
how is that possible if i have all fonts set to the same as in all other apps?
(it looks like they are not even helvetica even though i set them ALL to be
helvetica)
