[gatortalk] [SUN]: Famed orange-and-blue house hits real estate market (Crabbe)
Famed orange-and-blue house hits real estate market Doug Engle/Star-Banner Daryl Cook painted his house orange and blue in 2005 and painted the roof in the scheme of a football field in protest of his home owners association denying him the right to tear down his home and build two homes on the lot. He has since lost the fight in multiple law suites in Dunwoody, Ga. By Nathan CrabbeGainesville Sun Staff Writer Published: Friday, December 5, 2008 at 6:01 a.m. Last Modified: Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 8:32 p.m. FOR SALE: Orange and blue home with replica of Florida Field on the roof. Must be willing to tolerate the occasional Georgia fan repainting the University of Florida mailbox and smashing the alligator statues. - - - ATLANTA - Daryl Cook fought City Hall and lost. Now he's put his orange-and-blue symbol of protest on the real estate market. "I'm so tired. I'm done with it," he said. About three years ago, Cook painted his Atlanta-area home in Gator colors to protest government agencies that prevented him from subdividing the property. Last week, a local court rejected his lawsuit over the rulings. So now he plans to sell the house, which is currently being rented out. "It's not as much fun as it used to be," he said. Cook is a civil engineer who graduated from UF in 1985. He dubbed the house "the Swamp of Dunwoody" for obvious reasons. The roof is painted with yard lines and end zones that say "FLORIDA" on one side and "GATORS" on the other. Search for "Dunwoody Club Drive" on Google Earth and the whole thing is clearly visible. The home is located among McMansions that start in the $500,000 price range. Mark Lipton, who currently rents the place, said he's grown used to sightseers and vandals making regular appearances on the property. "You get some people that destroy things, and you get some people that want to take pictures," he said. "It's a mixed crowd." Cook's protest started after he proposed to tear down the house and replace it with two large, new ones. His neighbors opposed the required zoning change and won, so he was stuck with the house on land zoned for agriculture. He responded by bringing some farm animals onto the property to match the zoning designation and surrounding the house with alligator statues. He did most of the paint job in one night with a few buckets from a home improvement store and a sixpack of beer. "It was me being a bad boy and showing my displeasure," he said. He named some of the animals after his favorite Gators: Spurrier the rooster and three goats named Donovan and the Gatorettes. "Effectively, what I ended up with is a petting zoo," he said. The animals brought more drama, such as foxes invading the property to feast. His pigs escaped into neighboring properties. About two years ago, he ditched the animals, rented the property and moved away. "It became too much work," he said. Lipton is a Syracuse fan but rented the place because he was going through a divorce and needed a home near his boy's school. He hopes Cook changes his mind about selling. But Cook is ready to move on. He's selling the property as is, with the thought that the buyer will demolish it and build a fancy home to match the neighborhood. "It's always been a knockdown property," he said. But that doesn't mean Cook is ditching his passion for the Gators. He owns a Ford F-150 truck customized with Gator seats, hubcaps and about everything else Gator. Recently, he removed the hood and hauled it to a meeting of the Atlanta Gator Club for Urban Meyer to sign it. "I put my money where my mouth is," he said. "I put my passion where my mouth is."

[gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Florida fans outnumbered (Crabbe)
Although I've been to a lot of SECCG's, the only one I've been to where we played Bama was in 1994. It was an absolutely fantastic time, but one thing I DO remember is being outnumbered by the Bama fans. It was easily a 3:1 ratio or maybe even worse. Now he's put his orange-and-blue symbol of protest on the real estate market. I'm so tired. I'm done with it, he said. About three years ago, Cook painted his Atlanta-area home in Gator colors to protest government agencies that prevented him from subdividing the property. Cook's protest started after he proposed to tear down the house and replace it with two large, new ones. It was me being a bad boy and showing my displeasure, he said. He named some of the animals after his favorite Gators: Spurrier the rooster and three goats named Donovan and the Gatorettes. Effectively, what I ended up with is a petting zoo, he said. The animals brought more drama, such as foxes invading the property to feast. His pigs escaped into neighboring properties. About two years ago, he ditched the animals, rented the property and moved away. It became too much work, he said. It's always been a knockdown property, he said. But that doesn't mean Cook is ditching his passion for the Gators. He owns a Ford F-150 truck customized with Gator seats, hubcaps and about everything else Gator. [gatortalk] Contributing to the deliquency of a bunch of minors...
I've been a substitute teacher here in the Jax area for a couple of years now, and I was at my local high school today (Mandarin High). I was subbing in AP Human Geography, one of my favorite subjects. The teacher had left some guided reading questions for the kids to answer and a word search puzzle to do afterward. The puzzle said there was a hidden message using the unused letters. In first period, I sat down and did the word search puzzle while they were doing it, and the hidden message nearly made me lose my breakfast. It said, Go Bama Beat Florida Roll Tide. Ick. The kids were supposed to read after they finished all that work, but I noticed several of them were wearing Gator sweatshirts... and others had commented favorably about my Gator lanyard I bought for my ID. [gatortalk] Re: Dad's prediction for tomorrow
I agree. There are several Bama fans that work with my wife and they were talking smack today and wanted her prediction. They scared her into predicting a low score (FL 21-17), and when she got home I told her I was predicting a high score and Florida by 20. I told her that you have to excuse Bama fans for thinking unrealistic. They haven't had a reason to get excited since 1999, so they are soaring a little high right now, and the air is thinner up there. She promised to go easy on them on Monday. ;-) Randy - Original Message - From: Jay Cicone To: Gatortalk@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, December 05, 2008 5:29 PM Subject: [gatortalk] Re: Dad's prediction for tomorrow I told youthe 20 point spread will go down. [gatortalk] My take on bama
I have been hesitant all week to feel good about this game, but can't help myself. I keep telling myself that bama is good, they are undefeated they have a big D-line, a bigger O-line and Orange Julius as a WR, how can they be beaten? But then I look at who they have played and how they played them. bama got to the #1 ranking based on wins over the feared Clem's son Tigers, LSU Tigers and Jawga Tigers, uhm pups. The teams they beat that were supposed to be great, well, aren't.Big old Cody in the middle of the D-line is a load no doubt, I think if we can break some plays to the outside and run a lot of mis-direction (the bread and butter of our off-tackle runs, bam strate through the middle), Cody will be a bit winded come the 2nd half. And while their O-line looks good, I don't think they have played against a D like ours. We do a lot of stunting, the blitz doesn't come strait up the middle, but comes from all angles. Then you have the Tebow factor. They can't account for him, if they want to bring 8 in the box, we pass over their heads and head straght to the end-zone. If they want to play base D, Percy will have a big day - yes, he will play. After all is over, we walk away with a 34-23 win and do not pass go head straight to the BCSC Bowl!My only caveat is turnovers. We really haven't been in a close game all year except Ol Miss. And that game was 17-0 at half, it took 2 stupid turnovers on successive posessions to lose that game. If we take care of the ball, we win. If not, we lose.Ken K.MNGator --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---

The difference is we weren't annointed the kings of college football after those wins. It wasn't until we ran that gauntlet, winning every game by at least 28 (something that had never been done before in the SEC) that the talking heads thought, gee that Florida team is pretty good. -Original Message- From: Gatortalk@googlegroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, December 05, 2008 6:05 PM To: Gatortalk@googlegroups.com Subject: [gatortalk] Re: My take on bama Ken K wrote: But then I look at who they have played and how they played them. bama got to the #1 ranking based on wins over the feared Clem's son Tigers, LSU Tigers and Jawga Tigers, uhm pups. We were pretty much surrounded by Bama fans, too, but the two couples behind us were particularly bothersome. I'm sure I've told that story here before. One of the girls had some pompoms and kept intentionally (obviously intentionally) shaking them right on my head when Bama had one or two decent plays at the beginning of the game. Finally, about halfway through the 2nd quarter, my inner Gator Bad Gl stood up and said, Girl, if you hit me in the head with those @)#$(#$% pompoms again, I'm gonna take them away from you and kick your @$$. She looked quite stunned that a nearly 40 year old woman would say and do such a thing, but... well... there it is. LOL. It's a good thing I hadn't been drinking. At halftime, my 15 year old daughter and I went to the restroom and stopped to look at some of the Gator memorabilia. Pompom Girl's boyfriend approached me and started chastising me for cussin' at his girlfriend. I turned my back on him and told him he'd better leave me alone. Fortunately, my sister had seen him leave his seat right after we did so she came looking for us... with a policeman. She had already told him the whole story so he was watching the confrontation at the souvenir table and came over and told the guy to leave me alone. LOL. Little did he know. ;-) It was all a moot point anyway because they got really quiet after halftime... and left well before the game was over. I don't think Pompom Girl picked up those annoying things again for the duration of their stay. So, OK, you forced it outta me... I sorta kinda encouraged them to perhaps select orange and blue markers or orange and blue color pencils from the supply shelf and, ya know, maybe include some illustrations on their paper. LOL. I sure hope that dang Bama fan teacher is really depressed on Monday when she gets to work... and that she will be doubly depressed when she sees what her kids left for her. ;-) Cee --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -~--~~~~--~~--~--~--- inline: image001.gif

My daughter and I were a constant irritation to them by our whooping and hollering and high fiving. I'll never forget the woman in front of us who stayed seated the entire game with a worried look on her face and kept rubbing a little plastic elephant with her thumb. She (and her party) vanished at the end of the game. I REALLY enjoyed walking down the ramp and chanting It's GREAT to BE a FLORIDA GATOR! with all the gators afterward. :-) Ah, memories... Wish I were going to be there tomorrow. It was an absolutely fantastic time, but one thing I DO remember is being outnumbered by the Bama fans. It was easily a 3:1 ratio or maybe even worse. My opinion is that the Bama fans snatched up the bulk of the SEC's tickets (not the tickets that go to the schools) in '92 '93 when the game was in Birmingham and has renewed their order each year, thus holding onto the ticket. I used to be one of those, but I missed renewing my order one year (I had moved and my form was lost in the mail) and have been trying to get back in the rotation ever since.
