Making a strong case for the immediate withdrawal of the controversial VCD, which seeks to 'distort history', he said the government should tender an apology to freedom fighters for the objectionable film. (GT) THE MISSIONARIES WERE BRUTAL: ANGLE: Margao-based 80-year-old Bhiku Pai Angle, a veteran stage artiste, student of history and one of the doyens of Marathi movement in Goa - a witness to the proselytisation efforts of the erstwhile Portuguese rulers has come out in strong support of the government and has wholeheartedly endorsed its actions in telecasting the CD Goa KA Swadhinta Sangram in all schools in the State. The conversions were led by ST Francis Xavier earlier, he said. (GT) A THIRD-RATE, PATHETIC FILM: When GT invited Goan poet and historian Dr Manoharrai Sardessai to watch the 68-minute 'documentary' on Goa's liberation struggle, he refused saying that he had watched the film a year back and found it terribly disappointing. It's a third-rate, pathetic film and I don't want to watch it again. Such a film shouldn't be shown in Goa. (GT) CONG TO AGITATE: The North Goa District Congress Committee has decided to launch an agitation at various levels to seek the withdrawal of the VCD on Goa's freedom struggle. (GT) EX-PM NARASIMHA RAO DEAD: Mr PV Narasimha Rao, the architect of India's economic reforms and the first prime minister outside Nehru-Gandhi clan to complete a full five-year team in office, died in New Delhi after a bout of serious illness for the last fortnight. ONE COMMITS SUICIDE OVER LOVE AFFAIR: A 21-year-old boy from Chinchinim, who recently returned from abroad, allegedly committed suicide on Thursday after his girl friend reportedly preferred to end the relationship, police disclosed. (H) BJP MEMORANDUM TO GOVERNOR: A memorandum presented by the State unit of the BJP to the Governor, Mr SC Jamir, on December 23, condemned the Opposition Congress party for causing constant hindrances to the government and its functioning by way of Opposition which is far from being constructive. (NT) PRISON REPORT SUBMITTED: A report on the state of prisons in Goa, compiled by a four-member commission, was submitted to the Bombay High Court of Goa on Wednesday. The commission was appointed in the wake of a petition filed by undertrial Richard D'Souza who questioned several alleged wrongs on the part of the State prisons' administration. (GT) GOODS DESTROYED AT VASCO: Goods worth around Rs.50,000 were destroyed in a fire at the home of an elderly man, Custodio Menezes from Colaco Arcade on the main Vasco-Baina road. While ironing his clothes at around 3.30 pm, it was reported that the elderly man got drowsy and fell asleep. The fire started and slowly spread across the whole room. (H) THOUSANDS PAY TRIBUTES TO FR OLAVO: Thousands of people paid their last tributes to the director of the Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media of Archdiocese of Goa, Fr Olavo Velho Pereira, as his body was laid to rest at Benaulim on December 23. In his speech, the Archbishop, Rev Filipe Neri Ferrao said that the Archdiocese had lost a talented priest who had contributed much for the growth of the society through his various talents. As a pilgrim, Fr Pereira gave his entire life for his flock and crushed himself till the end of his journey in order to attain eternal life, he added. (NT) SCOPE FOR MUTUAL FUNDS IS TREMENDOUS: KURIAN: With NRI money flowing into Goa there is a tremendous scope for mutual funds in Goa, stated AP Kurian, chairman, Association of Mutual Funds in India. Speaking at a press conference, Kurian said that over the years the Mutual Fund market has grown in India. Today we have an investment worth 1,50,000 crore and world's prominent players working in India, he said. (GT) BODY FOUND: A highly decomposed body of an unknown person was found hanging to a banyan tree, behind the military camp at Dhavlim in Ponda. (NT) MMC WORKERS GO ON STRIKE: Work at Margao Municipal Council office was totally paralysed after lunch break on Thursday (December 23) when all employees of the Council went on strike in protest against an assault on one of their colleague. MMC chairperson Kamilini Painguinkar speaking to the press stated that the protest was

But of course, this question will never be asked or answered because all the chickenhawks know there are no WMDs. TO: Joe Lobo [EMAIL PROTECTED] Joe Lobo says to Halur Rasho: The problem with living next door to a giant like the USA...not very unlike how Pakistan has to live with a populous (prolific...as in population growth) with Mother India next door, as one has to shift, as the heavier neighbour moves, to avoid being squished (or squashed as they say in proper English.)but as Chairman Mao of Chinese history said, All power grows out of the barrel of a good gunand you americans now hold the gun on the UN and any one who dares to defy the future designs of your oil-provider for the future Texas presidentand like the British Empire who thought that the planet belonged to them ...the future will present small problems. Mario replies: Where does one start to respond to something like this? Are we being just a tad cynical here, Joe? Are you pulling our legs, huh? By the way, did Chairman Mao really say that it had to be a good gun? I thought he said any old gun would do. Anyway, I digress. I didn't know we Americans held a gun on the UN! Must not be one of Mao's good guns, because the last time I checked, Kofi Annan, who has obviously not read UN resolution 1441, said that the US-led liberation of Iraq was illegal, France had threatened to veto any consequences on Saddam for not complying with that resolution, no matter what, the UN was refusing to go along with the US's proposal to qualify the killing in Darfur as a genocide, and Kofi Annan was refusing to turn over evidence in the oil-for-food scam to the US. In 1991, the UN would not let the US go after Saddam beyond the Kuwait border. What kind of gun is that, huh Joe? Not very good, I'd say. And what kind of retaliation did we see from the EVIL oil-provider-for-the- future Texas president? Opposition to the calls for Kofi Annan's resignation, at least until the investigating committees had finished their jobs. Strange way for the EVIL Texas president to behave if he thinks like the British that the planet belongs to the US. Also, the last time I checked, it was Pakistan that was threatening to use its nuclear arsenal if India even thought about attacking it. Not something someone worried about being squished, or squashed, would say, is it Joe? I don't know where you live, Joe, but the US is less dependant on foreign oil than most of the European countries as well as Japan and China. Plus we have a lot locked up that we are not using right now that can access in a pinch. So, if we do guarantee that world oil supplies will not be disrupted, it is those countries that will benefit the most. Unless you think that the world can run on empty? Furthermore, if the US really wanted to capture mid-east oil, why did they walk away from Kuwait and Iraq in 1991, when they had their oil basically in US control? Something to think about, huh Joe? Finally, regarding thinking like the British that the planet belongs to them, can you put together for us a list all the countries that are US colonies? My memory must be failing, but I can't think of even one. And please don't say Canada, Joe, because Tim and Mervyn will really go nuts.

Upon reading this post, I decided to re-read the news article previously referenced. http://www.boston.com/news/politics/president/articles/2004/10/22/divide_seen_in _voter_knowledge/' The last few lines are particularly apt here, in regards to this post. People have a hard time admitting the discrediting of the reasons given to go to war in Iraq. In fact, they still maintain the reasons are completely valid - despite all the evidence to the contrary. This is very counter-intuitive. From a pure sociological point of view, I wonder why this is so. Is it because in general, some people have a hard time admitting that they could be wrong? Or are there other reasons? The lines are excerpted below: ... the dissonance among Bush voters reflects the country's difficulty coming to grips with the discrediting of the rationale for the Iraq war. This period will really stand out as when the US went to war on assumptions that turned out to be incorrect, he said. The body politic is still struggling to come to terms with that. ... From: Mario Goveia [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Chickens coming home to roost! [...] Yes, no WMDs have been found in Iraq. However, neither has there been any accounting of what happened to the WMDs Iraq had. There has been some speculation in reports, but no one knows for sure. [...] Bush voters are using common sense. [...] The question is, what happened to the WMDs not accounted for.

[Goanet]Re: Goa of My Dreams - Dr. Hubert Gomes
COMMENTS: It is not everyday that someone writes what Dr. Gomes has written above. Indeed, Goans are a confused lot, maybe in most aspects, but politically confused, definately yes a one hundred percent. And we do not have to go far. Just a few days ago the education department has come out with a 'Goa Liberation' VCD which has and will confuse Goans even more, to the point that they could go raving mad. This controversy has already tasted a calamity in the sad demise of the trusted lieutenant of Archbishop of Goa, Fr. Olavo Pereira. Then again, Goans prefering to 'wish' rather than 'want', is entirely true. If one wants something bad enough, one is ready to work hard, even to the extent that it might kill him. But the desire to want something badly drives people to excell. Goans (Bahujan Samaj) were so obsessed with suspicion towards the Brahimins and Catholics that post liberation they allowed a pipe dreamer in Bandodkar to ruin Goa and their own daily bread (read agriculture). That obsession has resurfaced now in full circle with a few bigotted and brainless Goans trying to undo what 450 year took to make it happen. And they call themselves Goa's freedom fighters. If Goans are sensible, which they aren't, they could bring in a revolution in the Goan political arena and drive these shameless usurpers of power and pelf into the arabian sea to drown. But this is not going to happen. We Goans are a breed that is 'suscegad' first, 'crabs in our mentality' second and people who will give away even our 'kastis' if someone would praise us and our kastis enough. Needless to say, I propose three cheers to Dr. Hubert Gomes. May his tribe increase in leaps and bounds before it is too late for our own bloody Goan good. Floriano www.goasu-raj.org
[Goanet]Goa-World.Com Team (Kuwait) congratulates Silviano C. Barbosa on the release of his novel The Sixth Night
Silviano C. Barbosa's novel The Sixth Night A Goan novel THE SIXTH NIGHT written by Goan author (based in Canada), Silviano C. Barbosa, was released at Clube Vasco da Gama, Panjim, Goa on 21st December 2004 by Margaret Mascarenhas. The novel portrays the travails of a Catholic girl growing up in traditional Goa of the 1950s during the last decade of the Portuguese rule. Linda Cardoso derives immense pleasure from the simple village life steeped in customs, traditions, feasts and celebrations. Until she comes face to face with ugly caste discrimination inflicted on her people for centuries. An old Goan custom declares that the goddess who visits the child on the sixth night after birth determines the destiny of the child forever. Was it her destiny to be beautiful, lively and excel at everything and yet be unhappy? May be the goddess had not felt welcome enough She falls hopelessly in love with a foreigner, only to lose him abruptly during the Indo-Portuguese conflict of 1961. Left alone, ostracized, helpless and pregnant with a half-Portuguese love-child, she struggles with thoughts of despair, single motherhood and the pain of separation as life drags her through three continents ultimately landing her in a new country Canada. A story of love, hate, jealousy and intrigue great insights into Goan life, traditions and customs. Will bad karma haunt her all her life? Or will her steely determination and innate goodness change what was written on The Sixth Night? The book starts with a detailed nostalgic background of the Goan village life, slowly taking the reader to a fast life of a Liceista at Liceu Nacional Afonso de Albuquerque in the Cidade de Goa, Pangim, where the novel reaches its climax and the protagonist feels the after-effects of Indian invasion/Goan liberation, and from there the last part of the book takes the reader through complexities in life through the U.K. Portugal and Germany and finally to Canada. The preview readers have already hinted at the possibility of a Bollywood movie based on the story. With heavy doses of nostalgia, humour, usage of Konkani and Portuguese words to give the novel an authentic touch of a life in pre- liberation Goa, the novel is a feel-good kind of a story, which rewards the reader for going through over 300 pages of interesting intellectual, social, and political stimulation, deductive reasoning, logical conclusions, and historical exclusions. Silviano Barbosa, who now lives in Toronto, Canada, after leaving Goa 33 years ago, still finds time to be in touch with his mother-tongue Konkani and Goan culture. He has already produced a sold-out Konkani album Classic Goa - Hits of the Millennium which has sold over 4000 cassettes and CDs when he visited Goa in 1999. He wrote the lyrics of all the songs on this album, some of which you can still hear on Goas FM Radio. This novel is his second contribution to Goas growing cultural heritage, with his unconditional love for Goa. [Goanet]67 MINUTES OF GOA'S HISTORY
Dear Netters, The timing of the fatwa [dated 17 December,2004]from the Goa Directorate of Education and the distribution of the infamous VCD personally by some of the taluka level functionaries on 18 December,2004, speaks volumes in what it does NOT say. The VCD was available with the Directorate of Education from 12 December,2002[ according to a Pressnote issued yesterday by the Director]. The Directorate had the Film Censor Board clearance[ atleast for the original Ramesh Deo version]Why was it sent to the schools at the eleventh hour? Was it like cutting of the Rain trees at DB Marg Campal in the dead of the night under the cover of darkness when the permission to cut had been issued by the Forest Dept? Or was it like cutting the trees near old GMC without permission on a Sunday and obtaining ex-post facto permission to regularize the cutting the trees on the following Monday , when challenged? If the version circulated to the schools for compulsory display [ a compliance report has been officially asked for in Tiswadi taluka by the ADEI] has CBFC certificate, why is it not displayed at the beginning of the 'documentary' film in the officially circulated VCDs ??? The local press has carried the Directorate of Educations version along with the Congress protest, as can be seen in part below. Please look up the full text on the website www.navhindtimes.com to see the full version. Navhind Times on the Web: Goa, Tuesday, December 21, 2004 . Awareness campaign on child abuse launchedNT News Service Margao Dec 20: Goa has witnessed a number of cases of sexual abuse in last couple of months, where young children were the victims. taking cognizance of this, the Law Graduates Guild and G R Kare College of Law, Margao, have planned a series of child abuse awareness programmes. The campaign was flagged off at 3 p.m. from Colva on Sunday on the occasion of Goa Liberation Day, where many NGOs, social workers, senior advocates and others took part. Colva has been selected as the venue for the campaign as recently a series of child abuse cases, including rapes, have been reported from the area. The Goa Government's priority is apparently in bastardizing history so much that it does not tell it like it was printed in its own publications and school textbooks issued by the very same Directorate of Education. I quote from HISTORY CIVICS Standard Five text book issued by the Directorate of Education Governement of Goa in 2002 [ i.e.under the same BJP dispensation in Goa]which my son currently studies in a school aided by the Government of Goa. I quote from the text verbatim [ 'all capitals for emphasis' mine] from page5 Quote Chapter 2 EARLY RULERS-II. GOA UNDER THE VIJAYNAGAR AND BADAMI RULE: In the 14th century, Goa was a great trading centre. It imported good quality horses from Persia and Arabia. These horses were in great demand in the Deccan. The rulers of both,Vijaynagar and Badami were at war with each other. Both wanted Goa mainly because of the HORSE TRADE. So Goa was at different times OCCUPIED by the rulers of Vijay nagar and Badami. GOA UNDER BIJAPUR: Yusuf Adil Shah brought Goa into the Kingdom of Bijapur. He was a powerful ruler. He encouraged agriculture , art and literature. He was TOLERANT to all religions.Under him, Hindus were given religious freedom. Some of them were given high civil and military posts. Yusuf Adil Shah developed the PORT OF GOA by constructing a main road from the jetty of River Mandovi at OLD GOA right up to the PALACE of Adil Shah [present Secretariat] for trade and commerce. The PORT of Old Goa later became the capital city under Portuguese rule. Unquote Chapter-3 has this to say. Quote. After 1498, Portugal

[Goanet]The Ungrateful Indian
The Ungrateful Indian October 19, 2003 Permit me to draw a picture of an average persons daily morning routine. 1. An early raiser wakes up and puts the light on (i.e. consumes electricity). Let us assume that this person consumes electricity worth 20 paise in doing so. Maybe 2 paise get added to the Reliance treasury. 2. This person then lights up the cooking gas or puts on the percolator for the first cup of tea or coffee. Let us assume that LPG/electricity worth 20 paise is used. Another two paise may get added to the Reliance treasury. 3. Our common man now wants warm water for bathing. Again, he either consumes LPG/electricity (maybe he uses wood). Another 10 paise probably finds it way to the Reliance treasury. Drainage pipes are made of PVC. Maybe, another two hundred odd rupees has already found its way to the Reliance Treasury. 4. Now this person puts on some clothes. Yes, you guessed it right. Polyester fiber is the route through which rupees hundred may have already found its way to the Reliance treasury. 5. Now this person wants to make some phone calls to organize his day. Some more revenue may find its way to the Reliance treasury. 6. How about some news on television. Thanks to convergence and electricity, some more revenue might have found its way to the Reliance treasury. 7. This person now logs in into his mail accounts. Convergence and electricity again. 8. Now our person is ready for breakfast. LPG/electricity this time (or is the person using wood). 9. Newspapers have arrived and surprisingly, not contributed to the Reliance treasury. Something must be quickly done about this anomaly. 10. At last our person is ready to go to work. Gets into/onto the vehicle and starts the engine. Yes, you are right about petrol/diesel (did somebody say naphtha? SSS that is the most closely guarded national secret). And the never ending saga of every persons daily morning routine goes on. Looking at the above list one can realise that the two W's, water and wood, are in urgent need of proper management and channelisation and one would also remember that the Great man spoke about these two W's. The Great man had said that he wished that he had another twenty years of life. He would have ensured that no person in the country would have lacked for the two W's (no mention of Reliance Treasury). How many people are aware of this yeomen service that the Reliance Group is providing and intends to provide to each and every person in India. Such unparalleled commitment to service and such unprecedented concern for the people of India. And yet, there are those amongst us who repeatedly create obstructions in the path of this glorious group. We obstruct the disinvestment of HPCL/BPCL. We insist on restricting the call forwarding facility offered by Reliance Infocomm (Group of Ministers' should immediately overcome this by permitting unified license). The Honorable Prime Minister of our country is giving the golden quadrilateral to the people and the Reliance Group is ready to complement the Prime Minister's efforts with their pipes. Reliance Energy is eager to provide electricity to Maharashtra (never mind if it is only a few selected cities that are the cash cows of MSEB). They are so kind and considerate that they have willingly left a major portion of the state for MSEB. Why is MERC dragging its feet? Despite these difficulties the group continues to offer their humble services to the people of India. And the people of India are being so ungrateful to the Reliance Group. How can we rectify this? We must insist that the name of Reliance Group be inserted into our national anthem along with Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha, Dravida. After all aren't they Bharata Bhagyya Vidhata? Our Honorable Minister for Information Technology has said and I quote Should we block technologies or practices because they violate existing laws and regulations? Should we clutch on to laws and regulations till they are disregarded into complete meaninglessness? Or should we put the new possibilities to work? I totally agree with our Honorable Minister. Old order must make way for the new. I suggest that we should replace the Ashok Chakra on our National Flag with the Reliance emblem. Our National pledge can be redrafted to read as under: India is my Country. All Indians are my brothers and sisters. I love my country and I am proud of its Reliance Group. That seems to be the new order anyway. If there are too many hurdles in the path of Disinvestment we should form a Ministry of Entrustment and entrust all our public sector companies to the Reliance Group. I am sure that there is nothing in our laws and the statutes of our public

To, The Editor, Gomantak Times, Panaji Sub: Nothing objectionable, only factual says Nagesh Karmali. GT dated 23.12.2004 page 1. Dear Sir, Can one really call a person, who is unwilling to come on record about his views on the Goan freedom struggle in a FREE Goa[ currently under a pro-hindu BJP dispensation] that is a part of an INDEPENDENT India, a FREEDOM FIGHTER? Such persons are better off wearing green and red glass bangles on their arms. If they cannot speak, the truth or otherwise, with their names on record in a country that enshrines the Freedom of Speech in its Constitution, they are unlikely to have dared to work against the dictatorial regime of antonio Oliviera de Salazar. The tamra patra that they have fraudulently obtained to benefit from the pension and reservation schemes should be returned to the Government. These so called 'Freedom Fighters' may one day want us to believe that 'Admiral' Thimmaya [a Camotim ?] defected from the Bijapur Kingdom, worked with the Vijaynagar Kingdom and Vasco da Gama[1502 to1508] and then led Afonso de Albuquerque to attack Goa in March ,1510, to liberate it from its Muslim ruler[Adil Shah]. His descendents can then be eligible for pension and other benefits given to freedom fighters. Seems like Dr.Olivinho Gomes shares this line of thought on the liberation of Goan hindus by Thimmaya with Portuguese assistance.Even Nagesh Karmali fled the field while we were discussing this worthy historical figure after the infamous Mala PNKS incident which he co-led with Rajendra, the son of his friend and co-scrutinizer of the infamous VCD, Subhash Velingker. I have had the misfortune to interact with the late Shri Vishwanath N.Lawande in 1983 and 1984 when he was the incumbent President of the Freedom Fighters' Association of Goa. He was developing the land at Matne[Sindhudurg taluka of Maharashtra] across the border from Maulinguem-Bicholim which is now Capt.Lobo's Hideaway. The work was of re-directing the course of the river and he was using a bulldozer from the Government of Goa; both acts were patently illegal. He was using one anguta shaap[Thumb impression illiterate man] called Dhaktu Shirodkar from Bicholim and the Sanjivani Society as fronts to defraud the Indian [not Portuguese] Government. He attempted to bribe me[ then just in the second year of Government service] with Rs.10,000/- [then equal to 10 months worth of my high status ' four figure salary' ] to get his work done partly off record. When he did not succeed, he made a complaint against me to my Controlling Officer. It is then that I fully understood what my father had told me when I asked why he was not applying for the 'tamra patra' when it would benefit one more generation through reservation in professional colleges and jobs [I was in school when I asked him]. He said, I was jailed in 1955 for possessing Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography 'My Experiments with Truth'. I was not really a freedom fighter; neither are these rogues who were jailed for crimes and are now masquerading as Freedom Fighters.Do you want your father to be counted among rogues? What the Portuguese could not do with jeep-borne police was done by an amoeba traveeling in a mosquito. The late V.N.Lawande was killed by malaria. May his soul rest in peace. There are ,of course, genuine freedom fighters whom I met through my father, who was a co-prisoner with the late Bhausaheb Bandodkar and a fan of his until death. If there is a connection of Inquisition [ in the 18th and 19th century] with the freedom struggle in Goa [mostly in the late 19th and 20th century], let the so-called freedom fighters tell us what it is--and stand by it on record. If Damodar Mauzo can write his name and let his phot be published when taking a stand in favour of his Christian brethren in Goa, can these persons[ men may be too strong a word to describe them] not stand by their bigoted views? I stand by what I write and in witness whereof I write my name. Yours sincerely, Miguel Braganza Mapusa-Goa. 9822982676

[Goanet]Re: Chickens coming home to roost!
TO: Mervyn Lobo [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mervyn writes, There used to be a time when a teenager in Terre Haute, Indiana could look forward to a bright future. Ever since Bush started giving tax breaks to American companies exporting jobs to Canada, India and China, the job situation has become bleak. In fact, about the only job available to the American teenager there today, is to wear a uniform. The choice being: either volunteer for a uniform from one of the services or a uniform from McDonald's. Sadly, both jobs pay the same minimum wage. Mario replies: Bush has done nothing as you mention. This is typical bovine excrement from the Globe Mail. All American companies have always had the same tax advantages, and virtually no restrictions on how they do business. The US economy, after the economic slowdown in 2000-2001 and the shocks of 9/11 has the fastest rate of job growth among all western countries, includion Canada, so I have no idea what you are nattering on about Terre Haute. The US unemployment rate is 5.4%, whereas it is almost 7.5% in Canada and 10% in the major European countries (France, Germany, Spain Italy), so put away that feni bottle, Mervyn. Taxes by themselves have nothing to do with jobs being outsourced, which is shown by the fact that the US has gained far more jobs from insourcing by foreign companies than they have lost to outsourcing. Mervyn writes: I am a sucker for any request to teach people to read and write. Hence most on my money goes to Goa and Tanzania. My contribution to the teenagers of Terre Haute was out of pity. Mario replies: It always amuses me when someone from a less developed country that we support and protect pities us. Mervyn writes: US legislators believe that any attack on N. America is a direct attack on the US. My hats off to the Canadian lobby that has successfully propagated this. It leaves us with much more money to spend on education, health and social services. Mario replies: Our taxes pay for your ability to talk nonsense about us. Mervyn writes: It does not surprise me at all that you stopped reading The Globe and Mail ONLY after you were told by other sources that the newspaper is full of blatant propaganda, not a respectable newspaper. Just in case you are not aware of it, most Goanetters rely on their own intelligence to make such decisions. Mario replies: No one had to tell me this. All I had to do was compare what they were writing with a number of sources of information now available to us. As long as Goanetters are not reading the propaganda newspapers they will be all right Marvyn writes: My folks, both in their seventies, migrated here only after their cronies assured them that they would receive better medical treatment than in Tanzania (where medical treatment is free too.) They have not been disappointed. Mario replies: I'm glad they're OK. You should talk to the hundreds who come to a border state like Ohio because they cannot wait for a medical procedure in Canada, even if it's free. Mervyn writes: Thanks for your concern. As a small business owner, I am sure you have experienced how medical insurance premiums can almost break the profitability of a business. I am also sure you are aware that American businesses are setting up operations in Canada because the Canadian health policy allows such companies to achieve a distinct competitive advantage: Mario replies: I seriously doubt anyone is moving their business from the US to Canada just for the health care system. If this were so, all the offices and manufacturing operations of foreign companies spreading out across the US would be going to Canada.
[Goanet]Re: Chickens coming home to roost!
Tim de Mello writes: I would like the people in Darfur, Sudan from being killed and brutalized by the Janjawwed. They have suffered more than the Afghans and the Iraqis. I think they need to be free and democratic - like us. Please have a word with GWB on behalf of us poor and ignorant Goenkars, could you? Perhaps you could suggest that he look in the mirror before he gives you his response. Mario Goveia replies: Tim, I didn't know that the Goenkars had made you their spokesman. When you call Goenkars poor and ignorant, you are probably referring to yourself, but insulting the whole community. Anyway, I will try and explain to you what is going on. The US gives more aid to Sudan and to the continent of Africa than the rest of the world combined. That includes all of Europe and Canada. Since you are a Canadian, I assume you have already asked the Canadian Prime Minister why Canada is not helping the beleagured Sudanese, which is why you are now turning for help to the US. Somehow, I wonder if this has even occurred to you. Has it occurred to you to question why Kofi Annan has let hundreds of thousands of his fellow-Africans die in Rwanda, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Sudan, all on his watch? What are the liberal French, Dutch, Brits and Belgians doing to help Africa, which they controlled during colonial days? And what has Canada done lately to help anyone, though they did send a token force to Afghanistan, but only after the Taliban were routed. Canada always shows up after the primary fighting is over. You critics cannot have it both ways. You cannot object to the intervention in Iraq and then ask why the US has not intervened in Sudan. The US is the only country that has declared the atrocities in Sudan a genocide, which would trigger UN action, whereas Canada and the rest of the UN is refusing to go along. It is the UN's primary job to resolve international conflicts, not the US's, which only acts as a last resort. If you were not so determined to be a critic of the US you would know that the US does not intervene anywhere without giving the UN a chance to resolve a conflict. In Iraq there was a 12 year period from 1991 to 2003 where the UN tried to get Saddam to comply with its demands before the US acted, after Saddam was given an ultimatum in UN resolution 1441. In Sudan the UN is supposed to be the one that intervenes first, before the US can legally act. The US has been trying for months to get the conflict in Sudan to be declared a genocide, which would trigger UN action, but Canada and the rest of the UN is refusing to go along. Since people like you may also wonder why Iraq went to the head of the line over Iran and N. Korea, the same applies. The UN and the Europeans are currently negotiating with Iran, and the UN and other neighboring countries are currently negotiating with N. Korea. There are no UN ultimatums on the table so far, whereas there was one in the case of Iraq.
[Goanet]RE: All Colin Powell's fault!
Tariq, Because you have run out of ideas, you have now fallen back on demanding that an old and ill person like myself go to Iraq, which is what I called stupid (I apologize for using this word) and insensitive (which is a word I stand by). Let me turn that around. Since you are far younger and healthier than I am, why aren't you in the middle-east to defend the Muslim radicals you seem to sympathize with from the Americans and Israelis? You obviously know how to get there. I cannot understand how anyone who comes from India can oppose the liberations of Afghanistan and Iraq, when over 50,000 innocent Kashmiris have been killed since 1947 by the same jihadi mentality we are seeing in the middle-east, trying to get their way by force. Believe me, I can understand why some people may disagree with one or another US policy or action, but some of you seem to be having such a hard time accepting the fact that some of the details you want so hard to be right about are now moot. Let's say you all are hypothetically correct about all your assertions. Are you suggesting that we Afghanistan back to the Taliban, and Iraq to Saddam and the Baathists? What amazes me is that none of you seem to express any concern for the plight of Muslims who were being brutalized in Afghanistan and Iraq by Muslim tyrants all these years. Don't you acknowledge the difference between most Muslims who are peace-loving as the Quran teaches, and the radicals who want to control events by force, and have now added Saudi Arabia to their list? A local Imam tries so hard to convince us that Islam is a peaceful religion. I told him that we were convinced about the religion, now how about trying to convince the jihadis, the only ones who don't seem to have gotten the message?

He will shortly be leaving for Cambridge, UK, where he will pursue a research project on the Role of the Media in Bridging the Digital Divide. The Fellowship was awarded under the Chevening Scholarship scheme of the British Council. The term Digital Divide refers to the gap that exists between people who can afford and are capable of using modern information technology (including computers and the Internet), and those who are unable to do so because they lack sufficient finance and/or education. The field of Information and Communications Technology for Development (ICT4D) studies this phenomenon, and millions of dollars are spent every year on projects attempting to bridge the digital divide and bring the benefits of the information technology revolution to the have-nots. Through his research, Valentine de Souza is endeavouring to prepare a blueprint for a website or journal or nodal agency that will serve as a central repository for information on all ICT4D projects worldwide and track their progress. Mr de Souza had earlier been awarded the Madhu Valluri Memorial Foundation 'IT Journalist of the Year' award for 2002.

[Goanet]Consumer Awareness Action on Mobile Towers
- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre Ph:2252660 Website: www.goadesc.org Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Press Clippings on the web: http://www.goadesc.org/mem/ --- --- Consumer Awareness Action on Mobile Towers --- On the occasion of observance of National Consumer Rights Day in Goa, Consumer Forum volunteers from Assolna, Betalbatim, Benaulim, Cansaulim, Cuncolim, Loutolim, Majorda, Navelim, Nuvem Velim under the banner of Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) held a Awareness Action in Margao to highlight the consumer concerns about the installation of Mobile Towers in residential areas. The slogan of the action was If you do not respect our Right to Know, then we will enforce our Right to say NO. A detailed memorandum was submitted to the Collector Chairman of the South Goa District Consumer Protection Council. It may be noted that in recent weeks there have been a number of cases wherein citizens from various Village Panchayats and Municipal Councils have raised objections about the installation of Mobile Towers in residential areas such as in Benaulim, Orlim, Curtorim, Colva, Cuncolim, Maddel Fatorda. In fact there has even been a Public Interest Litigation Writ Petition (PIL) filed by the President of the Maddel Social Welfare Committee before the High Court of Bombay at Goa demanding a clear cut policy on Mobile Towers from the Goa Govt. and that the Service Providers (Cell Phone Operators) give full detail of their plans to the local community. Critical questions concerning the health effects and safety of radio frequency (RF) electro-magnetic radiation eminating from mobile towers need to be answered. There are fears doubts that long time exposure of RF radiation will cause cancer (leukemia), brain tumours, increased blood pressure, damage to eye sight and reduced mental concentration. There has been no effort from the cell phone operators to clarify to the residents and consumers the safety aspects of the mobile towers. Infact, instead of providing information and dealing with the genuine concerns of the residents and consumers, there has been absolute silence in this regard. Moreover we have noticed that Municipal Councils and Village Panchayats are unilaterally giving licences for the installation of Mobile Towers in residential areas without consulting the local community either through ward meetings or the Gram Sabha. Also, the Cell phone manufacturers are not fully informing cell phone users about the precautions to be taken when using the instruments so as to avoid the impacts of radiation. It may be noted that the Consumer Protection Act 1986 guarantees consumers the following rights: the right to be informed about the quality, quantity etc. of goods and services so as to protect the consumer. the right to be protected against the marketing of goods and services that are hazardous to life and property. the right to consumer education. The memorandum to the Collector Chairman of the South Goa District Consumer Protection Council with copies to the The Chief Secretary, Govt. of Goa, Director of Panchayats, Director of Municipal Administration, Director of Health Services, Chairman, Goa State Pollution Control Board, covers the following proposals: That the Directorate of Panchayats must issue specific instructions to the Village Panchayats that no licence for the installation of a Mobile Tower in a residential area be issued without clearing the proposal at the Gram Sabha. That the Directorate of Municipal Administration must issue specific instructions to the Municipal Councils that no licence for the installation of a Mobile Tower in a residential area be issued without discussing the proposal in the ward meeting. That the Directorate of Health Services, Goa State Pollution Control Board, Department of Science Technology and Chief Inspector of Factories Boilers should jointly monitor the implementation of the guidelines recommendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO). Cell phone Companies must undertake community education about the safety measures carried out with regards radiation hazards and the mobile tower location. Cell phone Companies must make Consumer Safety a priority in Goa since they do business in the State. The Goa Govt. must constitute a scientific body to act as a regulatory mechanism to assess, monitor and control the radiation exposure from Mobile Towers. Cellular Companies must give an undertaking to the community that should any harm be caused to human life and environment by the Mobile Tower then the same will be dismantled. [Goanet]TRUTH HURTS BUT LETS BE OPEN ABOUT IT
Many fellow netters have been writing to me privately in support of the campaign to get to the bottom of the Ribandar Church Molestation case. They say that their own independent inquiries confirm the allegations made. I would appeal to these concerned netters to take the courage and directly express their views and convictions on goanet for the benefit of all. We are fortunate to have a forum where one can openly express his or her views unlike some of the print media which has its business and other compulsions. The Ribandar Church Molestation case is just a part of the bigger problem that has gripped many other parishes in Goa. I have nothing personally against Fr. Newton Rodrigues. I have never turned down any of his request for donations inspite of never having received a receipt for any of the contributions made. But when a 13 year old girl is molested no sensible person could sit back in silence. The victim's mother confirmed to me that the incident had happened. The victim and the mother also spoke to Ms Auda Viegas of Bailancho Exvott who later submitted a report of the incident to the police. Now months later to say that the complain was filed with the police on pressure cuts no ice. We would do more damage to our religion by silently and cowardly enduring the wrongs and the injustice that may be going on in our places of worship. [Goanet]Goa Netters meeting on 21/December
Good Day Everyone ! As all of you are aware some of us netters met up at Club Vasco de Gama yesterday (21st Dec) at Ernesto's (Run by Ernesto s/o the Great Late Roberto Alvares - my good friend who I used to meet up mostly at the Red n Black dance at Panjim - I understand that now he is the King Momo at the Carnival Parades in Heaven). It was a beautiful afternoon with about 20 of us meeting up (didnt count the exact number) and putting a face to the picture of persons we had made up only in our minds. Following are the few goa netters that i met up with : Frederick Noronha - Ever Smiling 'Fred' was the quiet 'Master of Ceremonies' and introduced everyone to everyone. He did not seem to be the 'biased' moderator that I thought he was. A very down to earth man smiling always. Fred as to your question about why I am not on the Catholics Mailing List - will reply some other time. Cecil Pinto - The guy who wanted to advertise his 'florist' business on goacom. Very Jovial Character who missed Aires () so much at the meet-up (pl read Fred's post this morning about Cecil's calls to Aires). Eddie Verdes of SA - if you are reading this - I met up with Cecil first time. Tony Correia Afonso - The 'Big Shot' from Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd that I knew of as a student of MES College was there with his wife Marina. He used to be the Chief Guest at our college functions on several occassions. Silviano Barboza - 'Babush' as we know him is also a regular Chatter on Goacom chat. A very unassuming man - talented that he is. He released his book The Sixth Night at the meet-up and was kind enough to autograph a complementary copy for me in exchange of which I have promised him a couple of CDs of Mangalorean Konkani Hits. Babush and me goa long way and have interacted a lot on goanet as well as on chat and it was a great pleasure meeting him in person. Babush is a great lover of Konkani Music and has also produced a konkani music album called Classic Goa (if i got the name right) which also included songs sung by Lorna. Vivek Menezes - aka VM was there too - a lookalike of Sabeer Bhatia (the Hotmail guy). VM is a Hot Male too. He declined to be photographed - dunno why ! Desmond Nazareth - Originally from Mangalore - he is into film making and told me he makes documentaries and films (not the commercial bollywood ones). Quiet guy with a half Sai Baba hairdo. Melinda Powell - We all thought she was married to an Englishman (Lord Baden Powell) or an American (Colin Powell) - actually she is married to a south indian who is a Master Mariner and presently sailing with a Hong Kong based Company. I have a special affinity for anyone who is in the same business as me (Shipping). I expected Melinda to be this snooty, pouting woman (she is an ex-Air India Air Hostess and Air Hostesses always have had a bit of head weight) - but she turned out to be just the opposite - sweet, smiling and gentle. Good going Melinda. Bosco - Goanet Volunteer remembered exchanging mails with me and was there with his writing pad taking down the names of all those who had turned up. Daniel De Souza - He is from Vasco and I was meeting him for the first time though he is a vasco-car like me. Daniel happened to travel back to vasco with me after the meet-up and we had the opportunity to discuss issues pertaining to Goacom on our drive back. Joel D'Souza - the guy who sends us all the news clippings was accompanied by his son. Joel is the quiet behind the scenes man who was busy clicking all the action on his digital camera. I am sure he will have some of the pics circulated soon. Keep up all the good work Joel and thanks for your daily clippings. I also met up with Vivian D'Souza, Mario fernandes, Mario Dias, Margaret Mascarenhas, Brian Pinto, Floriano Lobo - those are the names I can recollect and many others too. Though I expected more members to show up - It was all in all a very nice afternoon and well worth the 7 + 7 hours drive from Mangalore and Back. Thanks once again to everyone who made a difference at Ernesto's. Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year in advance. With Warm Wishes, Vincent Andrade Mangalore
[Goanet]Media and corruption -- from watchdog to lapdog
From watchdog to lapdog http://www.india-seminar.com/2001/502/502%20rajdeep%20sardesai.htm RAJDEEP SARDESAI IN the end, all it took for me to be compromised as a journalist was one box of mithai at Diwali time. I had been in the profession barely a few months when the editor sent me off on an assignment to do a story on how film personalities and sports stars were being used as brand ambassadors. In the course of the story, I interviewed the usual suspects - advertising gurus and product managers. Two weeks after the story was published, one of the managers whose product had been written about rang up to tell me how much he had enjoyed the story. A week after, at Diwali, I received a box of sweets from the manager. A fortnight later, he rang up again, this time to inquire if the newspaper could do a story on a client of his. I put him onto our business desk, a story was filed by the business reporter, and since then every Diwali, there is one box of sweets I am assured of. In the years since being a cub reporter, I have realised that a mithai box is only loose change in the institutionalised corruption that is part of the journalistic profession. From the Maharashtra politician who plies you with a basket of grapes every season, to the airlines boss who upgrades you from economy to business class, to the restaurateur who offers you a free meal for two - the side benefits which come with being a pen-pusher or a recognised television anchor can take various forms. In each instance, the system operates on a clear quid pro quo. The politician who sends you grapes is only ensuring that you remember to be kind to him the next time he stages a walkout in Parliament. The airlines boss has made certain that any criticism of his attempts to curb competition a re not made public. And the food chain owner is making sure that when he invites your magazine to write about his restaurant, he will get virtually free ad space in the news columns. Indeed, much of the matter in the colour supplements that have now become essential accompaniments to mainstream broadsheets thrives on the principle that there is no publicity like free publicity. So, whether it is fashion shows or the opening of a restaurant or a film premiere, there is a pool of journalists who will be more than happy to play along with the party. In particular, when it comes to celebrity journalism in the country today, the lines between reportage and public relations are slowly getting blurred. Film producers take journalists to outstation shoots so that glowing articles can be written on the stars of the film, or else, a three minute story can be flashed on prime time news. Publishers invite reviewers to wine and cheese evenings so that the author can be given a three column colour spread the next day. Sports management companies invite sports writers and channels to cover an exhibition match in Goa so that a bit of publicity for the sponsor's product can be mixed with adequate sun and sand. Take also the so-called ad supplements that are now frequent additions to all newspapers. Most of these supplements are little more than large dollops of public relations with a small spoon of editorial matter. For example, journalists are taken on a full, all-expenses paid holiday for the Dubai shopping festival. The newspaper gets ad revenues, the festival gets publicity, and the journalist gets a perfect junket. Or, the supplements that celebrate one year of the NDA in power, or the birthdays of Jayalalitha or a Bal Thackeray. The newspaper editors might argue that such supplements are revenue earners, but the fact is that they do end up compromising editorial integrity (notice how the words 'sponsored feature' that accompany such supplements are usually tucked away in a corner). Or take some of the so-called hardcore corporate reporting in the country today, both in newspapers and on television. The arrival of the pink paper was seen by many at the time as a welcome break from the stodgy business reporting that focused on commodity prices and business handouts. But there is a growing trend within a section of the upmarket business papers and business programmes on television to appear less as detached observers of corporate news and more as partisan cheerleaders. The 'backpresent' concept at the end of a press conference that certain business houses seem to have perfected - whether in the form of an expensive pen or even better, a holiday for the family in a resort, or best of all, company shares - is only a reflection of how corporate journalism can be compromised. As indeed can the political journalist who enjoys the privilege of travelling with the prime minister or the president on an official tour to Brazil or Malaysia or some other equally exotic location. The external publicity department in the ministry of external affairs has perfected the art of ensuring that a journalist is kept suitably lubricated at all times. How is the Black Label whisky and

Today's Herald (Dec 23) has an article on p. 2 titled feasibility report on Mopa airport in Jan . It says that pursuant to an agreement signed by the state government with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) of Montreal, Canada, last year (i.e. 2003), and a visit some weeks ago of government officials to Montreal, the ICAO is planning to begin a techno-feasibility study of Mopa airport on site from Jan 10. The study will take 5 (five) months. Following submission of the report the state government will thereafter proceed to further the process of setting up the international airport.

It would have been OK *if* we were shown the higher prices at the very start, which is when we would have made up our minds whether to eat there or not. And it wasn't a Rs 20.00 a rice plate place either - a bit more upmarket than that. That's my point! You got over-charged (read cheated). I get overcharged whenever they come to know I'm a non-local. It has nothing to do with the fact that low budget tourists don't pay luxury taxes -- which Miguel pointed out. Here? Where? In India or in Goa? We're going completely off-track from the topic. I won't go further into details except to state that sufficient food for the common man in Goa was not a problem in the 50s, contrary to India's situation. I don't know who you would count as the 'commonman' of Portuguese-ruled colonial Goa, but a lot of comment that looks at those times without Lusostalgia suggests that apart from a pampered but tiny upper middle-class, the vast majority found life tough. Or would you see this as an incorrect view? FN

XVII PCP CONGRESS ASSERTS It Is A Time Of Revolutionary Potential Sitaram Yechury THE 17th Congress of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has made a rich analysis of the current international situation. Noting that the Congress is being held at a time of fierce all out imperialist offensive, the Political Thesis adopted by the Congress concludes that we are living through a time of great retreats and danger of historic regression but also of strong resistance and revolutionary potential. World capitalism is not merely incapable of solving the major problems facing humanity but on the contrary is contributing to the exacerbation of misery and heighten exploitation. The Political Thesis notes: Capitalist globalisation's tragic consequences are there for all to see. The world has become more unfair, less democratic, more dangerous and unsafe. There is heightened exploitation, militarism and wars, an all-out attack against basic rights, freedoms and safeguards, an attempt to criminalise resistance to aggression. Meanwhile, the struggle and resistance of progressive forces, workers and peoples is asserting itself and becoming more diverse. The class struggle of the working class and working people is intensifying. Peoples are confronting imperialist aggression with greater determination. In spite of its socially and politically heterogeneous nature, the anti-globalisation movement against neo-liberalism and war is objectively anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist. INEQUALITIES IN GLOBALISED WORLD The report points out the glaring inequalities that have mounted in this phase of capitalist globalisation. The number of people living below the poverty line has grown in most developing countries with 1.1 billion living on less than $1 a day. At the same time the combined wealth of the worlds 50 biggest billionaires is equal to the combined GDP of all Sub Saharan African Countries where 688 million people struggle for survival. Current UN figures put the number of hunger deaths at 36 million per year i.e. nearly 3 million people die due to starvation every month. Over thirty thousand children die everyday from avoidable causes in the developing countries. Over 10 per cent of the worlds children between the ages of 10 to 14 are exploited as child labour and over 2 million are forced into the sex industry. Even in the developed capitalist world the conditions of the working people have sharply deteriorated. The unemployed people in the OECD countries are today in excess of 50 million, unprecedented in the post Second World War period. Only 25 per cent of the worlds population holds 85 per cent of its resources. The domination of international finance capital in this phase of globalisation is clearly demonstrated by the fact that the financial assets stand at about 300 per cent of each countrys GDP. It is this huge bubble that is leading the present phase of globalisation. The concentration and centralisation of capital continues to grow rapidly with multinational corporations controlling over two-thirds of worlds production as well as trade. The report notes that under these circumstances all the four major world contradictions are intensifying. Though the PCP does not deal with these contradictions as we do, but in terms of content they have analysed the movement of these contradictions noting the process of intensification. DRIVE OF IMPERIALISM Simultaneously, with intensifying economic exploitation the current international situation also highlights the political and military hegemonic drive of imperialism. Three years after September 11, it has become obvious that the so-called war on terrorism is essentially just a political and ideological disguise for imperialism's strategic goal of world domination. The problem of terrorism - historically contrary to workers' and peoples' interests - is a real one, and needs to be consistently fought. But the war on terrorism waged by the US and its allies - using methods of veritable State terrorism - only nourishes and extends it, rather than reducing and isolating it. Terrorism can be fought essentially by attacking its social-economic and ideological roots - exploitation, poverty, growing social inequalities and injustice, national oppression and plunder, cultural and religious persecution - not by flouting International Law, systematically attacking rights, freedoms and safeguards, and with that excuse fostering racism and war. Stating that it is only through the strengthening of the global anti-imperialist struggle can this offensive be met, the PCP emphasises that nothing can replace this struggle in each country. In the present phase of globalistaion, the defence of national sovereignty continues to be an essential factor of resistance against imperialist globalisation. Hence, the struggle for socialism

[Goanet]Relevance of NGOs in Goa today (Goa Social Forum)
As an innovative way of celebrating 'Goa Mukti Din', a People's Symposium was organized by the 'Goa Social Forum' on 18/12/2004 at T. B. Cunha Hall, Panaji. The theme was 'Relevance of NGOs in Goa Today'. About fifty people from various backgrounds ranging from Labour organization, judiciary, media and academician and prominent NGO's participated and discussed and shared there views on NGO scenario in Goa. The following was the outcome of discussion. 1. NGOs should be the voice of the voiceless, after developing the leadership among the marginalized they should take a back seat and allow the emerging leadership to take over. 2. NGOs should be involved by the government in the policy formulation and making process and not merely for the implementation of defined policy. 3. NGOs should develop cross sector network with larger base among the oppressed section such as tribals, dalits etc. NGOs should not work against each other as well as not compartmentalize the areas of operation and target group. 4. NGOs should not be mere firefighters, but develop a strategy to counter the socio-economic and political forces in society, through mutual exchange of views and joint action. 5. NGOs should not merely become contractors to implement the government programs. 6. NGOs look forward for a closer exchange of views and support from the media and judiciary. 7. NGOs are not alternative to government, but have the responsibility of bringing to light the deficiency in government policy. In view of the critical role played by NGO groups those whose vested interests are threatened by the awareness created by NGOs can not expected to talk positively about NGOs and therefore they resort to labelling NGOs as anti-government, anti- development, frustrated, always negative and so on. [Goanet]GoanetReader -- Bishop Valerian D'Souza on the Church's mission
The Mission Of The Church: To Humanize Society By Bishop Valerian D'Souza PUNE, Maharashtra (SAR NEWS) -- The German, Swiss and Austrian Jesuit missionaries left behind a rich legacy in the fields of education and social work. I have been a beneficiary of this experience as student, seminarian, priest and bishop. I remember them with affection, aware of a sense of challenge to live up to their expectations and to carry on their legacy. What inspired them to leave the comfort and security of their country and come and spend their lives in selfless service in the western region of India? They came in 1854 at the invitation of Capuchin Bishop Anastasius Hartmann. The Capuchins and Carmelites had worked for the community before them. It was a period of the Padroado and Propaganda tussle. These pioneers faced a long and dangerous voyage and many did not reach India. While in India they had to look after a vast area from Quetta to Hubli (Karnataka State). They travelled by bullock-cart and horseback. There were scarcely any medical facilities on the whole, especially in the rural areas. Quite a few young missionaries died before they could be taken to a hospital miles and miles away. Their accommodation was simple, sometimes primitive. The people, the culture and the language were foreign to them. But they worked hard and persevered. What was their driving motivation? It was Jesus and to continue his mission. For this they were ready to sacrifice even their lives. The need to lift up the Christian community impelled them to start schools. Within 20 years they had started St. Patrick's School in Karachi, St.Mary's in Hubli, St. Stanislaus and St. Mary's, St. Xavier's in Mumbai and also St. Xavier's College in Mumbai. St Patrick's School in Karachi had many political and religious luminaries as students - Cardinal Valerian Gracias, Cardinal Joseph Cordeiro, Archbishop Raymond, Bishop William Gomes et al. Gen. Musharaf and former Deputy Prime Minister of India L K Advani were products of St. Patrick's. Besides schools, the missionaries started social works and later inspired other religious to start medical institutions. What are the challenges we face looking over the last 150 years? Like St Ignatius his sons must be gripped and fascinated by the Person of Jesus. Their lives must be centered on Jesus. To proclaim the Kingdom without proclaiming the King is meaningless. To be a Jesuit without deep attachment to Jesus is to be a Jesuit in name only. One of my earliest recollections as a young priest was in Harigaon mission in Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra. A young Jesuit was about to leave on his motorcycle. There was a bedroll and luggage on the carrier. He informed me he would be out for a week visiting mission stations. He would spend each night under a tree. Every evening he would sit with the villagers and listen to them. This would go on week after week. The jeep has saved time but have we preserved the custom of spending the evening and even the night in a village, being with the people, listening to them? Pioneering Spirit The first missionaries had to be pioneers. They needed to be creative. They experimented and failed at times, but they persevered. They tried to read the signs of the times and act accordingly. Parish work was not the main charism, but they took up parishes to be in touch with the people. They started institutions in response to the needs of the people. Several boardings were set up for poor boys and Dynanamata High School was launched with agricultural bias, technical schools to provide immediate jobs for the boys, Snehasadan, an inter-faith dialogue center and the Social Centre for the development of farming community. Today we need that creativity. The world is changing so fast that we can be left behind. We cannot rest on our laurels. What are the new initiatives that are being planned? Challenges in Education Speaking to the bishops of USA in June 2004 Pope John Paul II reaffirmed, Her many religious, educational and charitable institutions exist for one reason only: to proclaim the Gospel. It is utmost important, therefore, that the Church's institutions be genuinely Catholic: Catholic in their self understanding and Catholic in their identity. According to the Roman document on The Mission of Catholic Schools Oct 2002 the Catholic School must enable the students to raise great questions concerning the meaning of life, the significance of reality, and a responsible commitment to transform it in the light of the Gospel values and modern culture. The poor and the marginalized must have a central place in our educational programmes... According to St Ignatius education can become an effective agent of transformation. Our institutions can be and should be agents of change in a society riddled with discrimination, corruption, denial of human rights, greed for money, power, position, ethnic riots.President Abdul Kalam has words of high praise for the Jesuits.
