That's what I am talking about not a traditional server browser. A server browser in the lobby that just listed community servers and then if you really wanted it private then you could input the search key as the password (or similar) to that private server Then allow the server to handle the url for custom content. -Original Message- From: hlds-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com [mailto:hlds-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com] On Behalf Of Jonah Hirsch Sent: Saturday, June 27, 2009 1:52 PM To: Half-Life dedicated Win32 server mailing list Subject: Re: [hlds] Impractical l4d download solution ( was: l4d sv_downloadurl ) If the leader could choose a server from a browser, that would be a nice integration. If the browser would be official, it would be included in the main menu and would not require to activate the console. It would have all the server in the correct browser tab and it would not ask you a password when you want to join a server. It would also possible to filter for L4D games in the Steam gamebrowser itself. This would be an official server browser. > How is a console command "not officially accessible" > > Perhaps you meant "not user-friendly". The server browser has nothing to do with how poor the current download system is. We have worked around the server browser. How is a console command "not officially accessible" Perhaps you meant "not user-friendly". Left4Dead includes a fully-functional and "official" server browser which is no restricted in any way. As far as I know it has been there since day dot. Perhaps next time you say VALVe has done a shit job you should think about what it is you are writing about. Back on topic however, something such as sv_downloadurl should be included and work as it does in other source games. From what I can see most custom VPK's are between 10-30mb which isn't out of the ordinary for some user-made maps for other games. The problem is deciding at what point the user should download this. I agree with what an earlier poster suggested and that is to automatically start the download when the user joins a lobby and display the progress of that user's download (ala Starcraft's Battle.net). ___ Shane Arnold- clontar...@iinet.net.au "For want of a nail, the horseshoe was lost. Re: [hlds] Impractical l4d download solution ( was: l4d sv_downloadurl )
Hopefully downloading custom maps will be done the normal way with sv_download and optional compression. The current state of opening an external http link to the download is hopefully only temporary. I guess the lobby system isn't fully ready for automatic downloading of custom maps yet. I noticed Killing Floors (UT) automatic downloading of compressed maps was pretty flawless, even allowing you to download the custom map before you d/c from your current game and join. -Original Message- From: hlds-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com [mailto:hlds-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com] On Behalf Of 1nsane Sent: Saturday, 27 June 2009 9:11 AM To: Half-Life dedicated Win32 server mailing list Subject: Re: [hlds] Impractical l4d download solution ( was: l4d sv_downloadurl ) Wow wow...slow down buddy. Wouldn't it work to just set your map to link to a page on a wiki (the valve wiki or another wiki) where the page has a series of download/mirror links and info on the campaign. that should solve problems 1 and 2. That really is a majorly stupid way of doing it, what happens when:- 1. In a few months when siteX that the mapper included as the source expires or gets shutdown? 2. A good campaign gets popular and the people downloading it overload the origin server? Why not use the tried an tested redirect system like every other game?
