[Hornlist] RE: fingering
Hi all , When I think about technique , I think about it as a career extender : one should do whatever makes his playing easier . So when it comes to fingering , I think that the real challenge is to temper the differences - in sound and in intonation . The guide should be the ear only - if 1,2 fingering sounds sharp on under stuff D it does not mean , necessarily , that you should abort this possibility . This fingering is a power full tool when used in the beginning of Strauss con.no. 2 , for instance . but of course , some work has to be done , and awareness has to be developed until it would seem natural to you . [Hornlist] Triples
Hi all, For the past 30 years I was a double horn player . Now I play a triple . in order to choose it I have tryed Yamaha , paxman , Alex , schmid and kuhn . I found out that the Yamaha is a very well made horn , but it does not have a very good low register . I , personally do not like the Yamaha sound - it does not seem to br flexible enough for me . The Alexander which I have tryed seem to be good but yet it did not have a responce I liked . At least the one which I have tryed had too much resisstence . The Paxman is a very good instrument but yet , it is extremly heavy , and would fit , in my opinion , only for orchestral use . It felt like operating a machine . I have visited both in the kuhn and schmid workshops . (I would sper you enthusiastic descriptions , But just visiting such a workshop is an experience ) schmid horns are wonderfully made . I have tryed an E flat triple along side with two high f triples . The E flat triple was very good. I was pretty sure that I would pick it up . But then , when I have tryed the kuhn , with its great low register , and all three sides of the horn are balanced - I decided to pay the price of 2900 kg .- not much for a triple horn , but more than the Schmid , which wheigh pretty much like double horn . I think that kuhn , as of today , is a very dynamic firm , and in the last show in Switzerland , Ricco kuhn has presented a Quatro horn - a horn which can be switched between high F and High Eb . The question is what would one like to do with his q her new triple ."all around "horn , just like a double ? symphonic ?Are you a very good low horn player , and need some more security in the high register ? take care , Alon ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

I have been playing the same old N series Conn for the past 17 years . I think that Conns are really inconsistent , and one instrument is very different from the other . I , personally heard Conns sounding dark or bright and it seems like an instrument which one may impose him\herself on . you can play the loudest forte on a conn without braking that sound . I have played my Conn as a soloist , chamber player and within an orchestra . this instrument can fit allmost every situation , probably not bach cantatas , and Hydn 48\52 , but playing britten serenade was quite fun . the Conn's bell ring is compatible with alexander , lawson , and many other good makers , and the choices which you can make in order to buy a bell are inormous .thats what makes conn desirable , you horn shoper . [Hornlist] Re: Stiff Lips
I believe that one of the most relaxing exercise to do is just to play low long notes from G right under the stuff and down to pedal C , in pianissimo. While playing , keep your throat open and play through your vocal cords - the air should be " static " , or , should I say , do not blow through the instrument , Just imagine that you are a Bass singer . Watch for the beginnings of the notes - they do point out how open your throat is . As for further advice of how not to get stiff lips - every practice session which includes a massive or very high playing , should be done in intervals , and you really have to clear some time for it . A five minutes practice sequence can destroy you , if you would not take the break you need (some times the time of practice is equal to relaxation time!!) you may destroy yourself . There are some good sources regarding this issue :The book "Broken embouchure " by Lucinda Lewis" and some heavy routine exercises (the most of them DO require intervals) - my favorite is Josef Singers . take care - Alon ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

Jim , The way you have described the kind of work you do , a good 8D is fine . I believe that you should invest money in another instrument onle if you need to cover a whole new area - like very high parts . [Hornlist] Fwd: Finke Triples
-- Forwarded message -- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Jun 25, 2006 2:44 PM Subject: Finke Triples To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Alon, my name is Lou Denaro, I play a Finke Americus triple in high F and Eflat. I have owned several triple horns over the years The differences between the F and the E flat side that our colleagues on the list pointed out are all legitimate (I've owned all the horns they're describing except for the Schmid). Do you know that Finke has already dealt with the issue that you are describing in your post? Namely, if I want to switch my horn between High Eflat and High F I insert a different crook into the descant side; the High Eflat crook is just much longer and is bent back on itself so it can be plugged in easily. It is simply a proportional change that affects the tone quality, otherwise there are no weird issues that occur when doing this. Please see the Finke website for details and feel free to contribute this fact to the list (I am presently unable to because of some protocol affecting my ID) Best regards, LD ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
[Hornlist] triple horns
Hi, I believe that the answer depends on major two factors:one is tone quality and the other is the ease of playing on the other sides of the horn , the Bb and F.As far as tone quality goes , I like the high Eb better.I think that the tone color is pretty similar to Bb. As for ease of production - it depends on the way you would like to use the instrument - some play the Eb horn from middle space C. some are determined to pool the Eb trigger only after top space G . it also depends what are you going to play with this instrument . only orchestral ? chamber music? solo ? At the near past , triple horn could have been seen only in as orchestra , preferably a big one . times have changed - E . schmid , R . kuehn are only two of several horn manufacturers who try to "upgrade " the triple horn to an all purpose horn . I will not be amazed if , in the near future , an interchangeable Hi F - Hi Eb triple horn will appear. As a matter a fact , at least two manufacturers are working on this Idea now . [Hornlist] The Finke high f valve
Hi all I have been wondering for quite a while about the Finke mouth pipe valve idea . At a first glance it seems like a revolutionary idea :the high f horn does not interfere with the double horn structure , and the chances are ,that the reaction of the instrument would resemble the kind of reaction double horns produce , plus the advantage of an high f module. Now - I found out that the idea of a mouth pipe valve has been patented by Veneklassen , back in the early 70 's (I read about it in hornplayer.net ). Is the Idea of a mouthpipe valve so bad ? If not - how come other makers did not try it? thanks, Alon ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

[Hornlist] Yamaha YHR 881
Dear listers I have a discant Yamaha YHR 881 which is pretty good - it gave good results in in many challenging pieces , but I cannot get a dissent forte on this instrument . it has a middle small throat , and it seems to be the reason . Now I wonder - is there anybody who knows : a) if there is anybody out there who would trade a middle large bell+tail section for a middle small one ? b) In general- if I would assemble a yellow brass bell section on a gold brass body - should it create any problem? thanks Alon Reuven , Israel ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
[Hornlist] Water key
Dear all I have been thinking of installing a water key in my mouth pipe and my 3rd finger slide . The thing is - each and every horn maker describes endlessly how every tube is carefully designed in a way it won't make any turbulence . On the other hand ,water keys do appear in horn design .How come a hole in the tube wont Cose any turbulence , and is it safe to place a water key on the 3rd finger slide? ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

[Hornlist] anticipating the beat
Dear nick Yes , it is a common practice to anticipate the beat , especially in a resonant space , like a big hall or a church . I am playing in a chamber orchestra , and when I am freelancing in a symphony orchestra I tend to attach my beat to the movement of the batton ( that is , of course , if I am leading the section ).there are quite a few recordings out there where the horn section is late . you are in a good company .. [Hornlist] Kruspe vs . geyer
There are more then 25 recognised ways to wrap a double horn . Each horn is different , and I do not mean the brand- one Alexander 505 can be wonderful , and the other one - utterly ridiculous.Do not bother yourself with these . Try a horn , and if : a)the sound is good b) the intonation is good c)the instrument's response feels good and equal - try it for a few days , and if you still like it- then take it . [Hornlist] laquer
While reading some of the list members articles , some questiones came up . I would be most greatfull if some one would shere his knowledge with me regarding these questions : a) what kind of laquer is being applyed on brass instruments - is it just a plane metal laquer or is it some kind of a secret? b) If I wuold polish my horn (one of my horns is unlaquered ) with brasso - would it , actually take some metal of the instrument , cosing it damage? c) I have noticed that the Monet trumpet , as well as some saxophones , has a matt golden coating . does any body know what coating is it ? has anyone tryed to apply it on a french horn ? d) can any one tell me how and where can i learn to fix and costumise horns ? thankes , Alon Reuven ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

[Hornlist] UK attack
I personally think that from the moment this forum is losing it's character as a professional forum , terror ,in a way , has achieved it's goal . I am not saying we should ignore the terror attack . I am writing these words two hours after two young women got killed and dozens got injured in a suicide attack near one of the cities neighboring Tel -Aviv .it ain't easy . But we got to remain strong , and the best answer to terror is to keep on with our lives , channel the tears and the pain where they belong and keep our professional lives intact . In Israel , where I live ,we are( unfortunatly )experienced in large scale teror attacks . The only way you can reduce the danger to get injured or killed is to avoid jamed croud or long line. There is a huge nomber of variables - and the best answer to teror is life . you can't just lock yourself at home . play , make love ( and if you really have to , war ), fight fear any way you can.
