Wrong earth man, in some cases where there is a compile all deal going on then the key stroke you suggest is correct. I believe Skype is the only case that comes to mind. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptops and OS
Yes, a 64-bit computer can most often run 32-bit software. Where you run into the problem is you may have an older scanner or printer which won't work in the 64-bit computer, so you need to check the manufacturer's site to make sure you can download a 64-bit driver. Also, if you consider a 64-bit Vista machine, you will need to update Jaws to verswion 10 as that is the first version which supports 64-bit operating systems. As for not supporting Office 2003, that may be true. But, depending on your needs, that might be largely irrelevant. There are still a helluva lot of people out there using Office 2000 and even some using Office 97 software. I'll know later this week what the school uses, and that will determine what I will look for. One reason why I think I have to give up my much-loved Word-2003 is that Microsoft has or is soon stopping support for it as they move forward. I don't want to be a dinosaur. . So, what about 64-bit versus 32-bit? I know Jaws now supports 64-bit. Can a 64-bit PC or laptop run 32-bit software, or is that how it works? Not sure about that stuff either. - Original Message - From: Steve k...@sbcglobal.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, March 28, 2010 6:45 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] laptops and OS Jean, Well, first, any laptop will work. It's a good idea to consider several things when looking for a laptop. Since keyboard layouts vary in terms of where certain less-used keys like backslash, the applications key, insert, end, pgup and pgdn, if they are present are located, it is good if you look at a model you are considering buying first. You can always shop for it on the internet if you are comfortable with its keyboard layout. If you are considering a netbook, which is an underpowered laptop, there are a couple that don't have dedicated function keys. Second, consider the size of the laptop display. Those with 13 inch displays are lighter to carry around. Those with 17-inch displays often have a full keyboard including separate numpad. Third, if you look around on the internet, you can find laptops with Vista or probably even XP Professional. But, if your choice is between Vista and Windows 7, go with Win 7. It is more efficient, more responsive, and just a better operating system than Vista. Fourth, MsOffice 2003 will work with Windows 7 computers. You don't have to upgrade to Office 2007 unless the school requires it. [JAWS-Users] internet explorer showing blank pages when using jaws
I'm using Jaws 10 and 11 with XP Home, and it seems that either of these 2 Jaws versions has not been working when using I.E. 8. What I wish I could do is get rid of the stuff on the left side of the page--that Web address and home split button you see. Because that actually seems to be where the problem lies--plus it is annoying because you can't just go to links like you could in I.E. 6. What seems to happen is, it tells you you're on the right page, but going past that home split thing it shows nothing. I sometimes see links if I turn off and on the virtual cursor, or if I hit F5 to refresh. But often I can't get the links and text bodies of the pages to show up. I know it went to the right page but something is either blocking it or something is maybe set wrong in config. Now the odd thing is, usually when using my special version of Jaws 8 this doesn't happen; however I can't use Jaws 8 to find a favorite because hitting alt and the letter a it doesn't read the list of favorites. So if anyone can help resolve these issues would appreciate it. Also does F.S. recommend anything regarding tool bars? Should they be locked, and which ones would one use when browsing with Jaws? I just wondered if that had any difference in my not getting links to come up. Thanks. For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] internet explorer showing blank pages when usingjaws
Mike and others, I do use Jaws 10 or 11 most of the time, but as an experiment I have used Jaws 8 to see if it worked better. It is definitely more limited than 10 or 11 in many areas. But my concern was that, even when using a newer Jaws, the pages show no links or text when going past the home split button. I'll stay away from 8 since it doesn't read menus, but would like to know how to make 10 and 11 read the links on the page instead of seeing it blank. I'm trying to see if it's a Jaws issue and if either a tool bar needs to be checked or if something in HTML options isn't set correctly. I know others have had trouble getting pages to come up and would be interested in how they resolved the issue. Let me just assure you that Office 2007 is a good upgrade. Hi Francis; Below are 2 ways. The first is permanet until your computer changes it on its own and the second is a temporary method. #1. You need to open a message first and then press alt plus v for the view menu, arrow down to all headers and press enter or just press the letter A for all headers. #2. hmmm, easier than that, start composing a new message and press alt+b and it will be there. another press of alt+b will turn it off again though. Hi there. I need to add to the list of folks having this issue with windows XP, JAWS 10X and IE 8. I've tried refreshing the screen and using the insert+escape command to refresh the virtual buffer, but neither of these does the trick. The only thing that seems to work consistently for me is to toggle the virtual cursor off and then on again with insert+Z. I have know clue why this is, because it will happen on some sites and not others and not regularly enough for me to reproduce whenever I have access to a willing pair of eyeballs. grin Lisa Constipated accountants work it out with a pencil. Re: [JAWS-Users] Saving settings in IE8 for individual websites
Actually, the JAWS help does a good job at this. While in the dialog for personalizing web sites, you can tab back and forth from the tree view to a read only field that describes the function of each item and what the various options do. This isn't like the Windows Help system, so no F6 is necessary, just tab and shift tab should get you what you want. Constipated accountants work it out with a pencil. Thanks for the info. Re: [JAWS-Users] Labeling buttons in flash player
As far as I know, it is not possible in JAWS to label the Flash buttons. It is not able to label items within an object. A hanging indent is where the beginning of a paragraph starts near the margin and following lines are indented. It is one of the Word styles. Highlight the paragraph involved and go to formatting ALT-O, down arrow once to paragraph and whack enter then remove formatting I think it is called. Re: [JAWS-Users] question about MS word 2003, and hanging indent?
A hanging indent is a special paragraph style, typically used in citations and such, where the first line of the paragraph is flush with the left margin, and subsequent lines are indented approximately 5 spaces. Essentially, it's the opposite of a typical indented paragraph. If you go to your paragraph settings dialogue box, tab through till you here special, there is a selection there of several styles, including hanging. Yes, control Z is undo.
