If all of the screen reader makers, note taker builders and such followed a standard protocol, as computer builders have been pressured by the market to do, then, blind consumers would only have to compare based on performance. Instead, we as a community sit through flashy demos and broad promises of productivity only to discover, thousands of dollars and massive weeks of struggle later, that the hype does not equal the performance. Remember, or maybe not, when computer builders sought to set themselves apart by making differently configured keyboards and different command sequences for their machines and software? The pressure of the consumer community forced a leveling of that particular landscape so that all a consumer need worry about involved the operation of the unit or program. The blindness gadgetry falls into the early mistaken mold of wanting to distinguish itself by things other than strict performance. There should not be a stigma in how accessibility is introduced into a product. If there is doubt, the accessibility tab in the IOS devices is way at the bottom of the list of other modalities,. Accessibility should be intuitive and simple, so that somebody newly faced with issues that already cloud their emothins and judgment can just reach out and keep going with a slightly new form. The App Store isn't easy and isn't accessible. The IBooks store is iffy and tedious to navigate as a blind user now and it didn't act that way before the new IOS iteration. So, do I just return to paying my $75 or $50 fee and reading second hand through BookShare? Anybody out there listening? I hope so, because Apple made a gigantic stride toward equalizing the paying field.

Looks like the latest update to Fleksy, now says it is free. So now there is really no reason not to try out this awesome typing app! They say it is free now because it has gone to a main stream app. But I am not sure where their revenue stream comes from. Oh well, don't look a gift horse in the mouth? (smile) Take care. Can someone refresh my memory regarding System Preferences?
I have seemed to forget completely how on earth to access System Preferences with the keyboard. Yeah, I know about going to the Apple menu, then go down to System Preferences, but as I recall, there is a shortcut key that will bring it right up. I remember it being something like option+F12. I know it had the option key and the F12 key as part of the combination, but I don't recall the exacts. As much as I hang out in there, it would be nice to know. I should add that I am using Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and I did go under system prefs, keyboard, and I did look on the shortcuts tab, to see if I could find the actual command, but I can't. Is there another way that I could make this happen? Don't tell me they took this out of Mountain Lion, as I know in Lion, and in Snow Leopard, it worked fantasticly. I just don't remember the command. Hi, I don't recall there ever being a default shortcut for opening system preferences. You can create one yourself though by going into system prefs/keyboards and select the keyboard shortcut tab. Itunes audio format
In a recent thread the topic of the m4a audio file extention type came up. This is a kind of file holder that can contain content of different audio file types, including mp3. Does anyone know if itunes downloads in the m4a format are the full content as would be on a cd or are they in mp3 or any other lossy form? Is it in fact possible to get full type audio files or the apple losslessform on itunes? I'm converting my cd collection to apple lossless, which uses the m4a extension also. where are Voice Over dictionary enteries stored?
Hi y'all. I have a number of Voice Over pronounciation dictonary enteries I want to get rid of and I don't want to do them one at a time. Selecting multiple items via the pronounciation table does not work. Where are the enteries actually located so I can get rid of them in a hurry? Switching tabs in Safari
Hello all, I wish to switch from one tab to another in Safari. I thought the Option + tab was the command but this does not appear to work. Could somebody be kind enough to remind me how to do this? Oh I agree! I can remember, from a few years ago, a conversation I had with a new assistant-teacher at the school for the blind that I attend. It was about spreadsheets and things like that. He wanted to know if I could access them on my braille note. Of course, that can't be done, and he was surprised by it, I think. And that made me stop and think about how truly locked in we are on those systems. If you wanted to play .ogg files on your braille note, too bad! Humanware isn't too fond of open formats. Nope, you can't install an app to fix that, or to even open .ogg files. You can't install codecs or anything to allow the media player to play it. You'll have to use a computer to convert the file to mp3 and all that wonderful stuff. There are countless other things that the Braille note locks you out of, but that's just one of many. That's why when people start whining about how iOs is so locked down, I think uh, you haven't seen anything until you look at the blindness specific products. And because the blindy products can only be improved by the makers, they are very out of date. The braille plus 18 did it slightly better, but until they get all their bugs fixed, and update to android 4.2, they'll still be out-of-date. And don't get me started on the screen readers. When I got my first computer, a Dell laptop, I thought Window-eyes was so amazing and cool. Now though, we at our school rarely even use it. Now,we mostly use flaws, and even though I've told people time and time again that NVDA is good if you'll learn to use it, they still stick with the shark. The latest version implemented Vocalizer voices, which were already used in NVDA months earlier, and in Apple products years earlier. And even those voices aren't as good as Apple's in my opinion. The only thing I might miss from the windows world is Dectalk, but the Macintalk voices like Ralph and such are very close to Dectalk, so I'm not complaining. That's another thing I love about Apple. They rarely throw things away, they just improve upon things. I am currently using the Zarvox voice, and do love it, I use it sometimes when I have a headache and want a smooth voice. That's another thing. With many of the note takers, you can only use Eloquence. Personally, Eloquence has never been that remarkable to me. Its good, I suppose, but I don't see much amazingness in it besides supporting many languages, which eSpeak completely blows it away there, Vocalizer does too. Now though, some notetakers are switching to Ivona, which is a little better, but I'd prefer seroproc over that, at least from the demos and the Bushomatic thing, I could never get the live demo bar to work. So, I think that if notetaker companies would just make or use better operating systems, and not stick with the Windows CE stuff, which is out of date by like 3 or so years, then we'd probably have a better playing field. APH has gone a little better, in the original braille plus, they used Linux. In the BP18, they are using Android, but the software is still buggy, so I wouldn't recommend it at this time. But I think the company that should be held the highest in regard is Apple. Yes, I know, we've talked all about how they're so amazing and good, but truly, they've given us almost everything we could want as far as hardware and accessibility. We have computers, desktop and laptop, which are ALL accessible. We have phones, which are under the cost of a few cars and a mansion, no more mobile speak or talks. We have a PDA or small tablet, the iPod. We have a mini and a regular iPad, tablets. And they're even working on regular household appliances. And lets not forget about the Apple TV, which makes hulu accessible. So why have notetakers? I'd say, word processing. But I'm willing to bet that if we can get enough programmers who are blind onboard, we will have an accessible word processer. We will have an accessible MUD client. We will have all the programs and games and apps for iOS we want. So just have patients everyone, the Apple ride will succeed. sent from my Mac Mini with iCloud. Open that and you should find local dictionary open that and you will find all Items you added with the Add pronunciation command! I have a number of Voice Over pronunciation dictionary entries I want to get rid of and I don't want to do them one at a time. Selecting multiple items via the pronunciation table does not work. Where are the entries actually located so I can get rid of them in a hurry? Ok, I'm still totally confused as to how to use the keyboard layout now that I don't get verbal feedback, so have no idea how anybody gets used to using this app. I've been trying for what seems for ever just to type Hannah, for example, and only managed to get it once, and have no idea as to how, and am frustrated as ever with it. How exactly are you supposed to accomplish this with no verbal feedback, and only about 5 or so suggestions? I'm really starting to wonder if this thing is really worth it, or if it would be easier and quicker just to eventually buy a bluetooth keyboard when I can eventually shell out the money for the logitech model I'm wanting to buy. Ok, if you're currently using it, could you please give me a few tips? I'd love to at least try it, but at this point am finding it really frustrating, mostly sense there's no verbal feedback so have no idea where to tap on the screen and there are so few suggestions to pick from and doesn't seem to be a way at that point to continue to type, like with standard typing, to bring up others. Also, I can't seem to be able to simply delete 1 character within a word without having to erase the whole word, which is even more anoying, so not sure what I think of it yet. Hi, its really about confidence, and a general knowledge of the layout of the qwerty keyboard. You just tap where you assume a letter is, knowing that 9 out of 10 times, fleksy will know what you wanted to input. Well, I've had pretty much the same experience as you. Just keep trying, and you'll get it. I must say though, there really hasn't been much of a successful way to type on iOs without just using the slow touch typing or hardware. That's why when people start whining about how iOs is so locked down, I think uh, you haven't seen anything until you look at the blindness specific products. And because the blindy products can only be improved by the makers, they are very out of date. The braille plus 18 did it slightly better, but until they get all their bugs fixed, and update to android 4.2, they'll still be out-of-date. And don't get me started on the screen readers. When I got my first computer, a Dell laptop, I thought Window-eyes was so amazing and cool. Now though, we at our school rarely even use it. Now,we mostly use flaws, and even though I've told people time and time again that NVDA is good if you'll learn to use it, they still stick with the shark. The latest version implemented Vocalizer voices, which were already used in NVDA months earlier, and in Apple products years earlier. And even those voices aren't as good as Apple's in my opinion. The only thing I might miss from the windows world is Dectalk, but the Macintalk voices like Ralph and such are very close to Dectalk, so I'm not complaining. That's another thing I love about Apple. They rarely throw things away, they just improve upon things. I am currently using the Zarvox voice, and do love it, I use it sometimes when I have a headache and want a smooth voice. That's another thing. With many of the note takers, you can only use Eloquence. Personally, Eloquence has never been that remarkable to me. Its good, I suppose, but I don't see much amazingness in it besides supporting many languages, which eSpeak completely blows it away there, Vocalizer does too. Now though, some notetakers are switching to Ivona, which is a little better, but I'd prefer seroproc over that, at least from the demos and the Bushomatic thing, I could never get the live demo bar to work. So, I think that if notetaker companies would just make or use better operating systems, and not stick with the Windows CE stuff, which is out of date by like 3 or so years, then we'd probably have a better playing field. APH has gone a little better, in the original braille plus, they used Linux. In the BP18, they are using Android, but the software is still buggy, so I wouldn't recommend it at this time. But I think the company that should be held the highest in regard is Apple. Yes, I know, we've talked all about how they're so amazing and good, but truly, they've given us almost everything we could want as far as hardware and accessibility. We have computers, desktop and laptop, which are ALL accessible. We have phones, which are under the cost of a few cars and a mansion, no more mobile speak or talks. We have a PDA or small tablet, the iPod. We have a mini and a regular iPad, tablets. And they're even working on regular household appliances. And lets not forget about the Apple TV, which makes hulu accessible. So why have notetakers? I'd say, word processing. But I'm willing to bet that if we can get enough programmers who are blind onboard, we will have an accessible word processer. We will have an accessible MUD client. I agree that it is in large part perception and what one is telling themselves. It is easy if one is not careful to overstate the problems as to how they shape the entire picture and to overstate how great things were in the past (grass is always greener). It is easy to take the problems and create an entire gloom and doom and paint a picture for yourself of where it is going and to tell yourself how perfect it was in the past. I think Apple has more issues than they should, but I don't really think they have mor issue than they did a few years ago. As is pointed out in the message below, IOS 3.x versions were far from perfect. Were they truly over all such a better over all situation, I don't think so honestly. It is easy to combine the above with what the press is trying to jam down your throat about Apple. There is such a large contingency of them that want Apple dead! I think it is in part because Google gives them what they want and Apple doesn't in terms of data they want about people as well as advertising dollars being a huge part of the picture where they are not in that kind of relationship with Apple. The news media blows up every Apple issue to the point of distortion and almost never mention an issue about any other platform. They fill their articles with statements about how Apple has lost their glory, Apple is no longer relavent and how Nobody uses Apple products any more.
