MD: G$ Audio input

2001-07-28 Thread David Bock

Hello all,

I recently bought a Sony MZ-R37 and a Powerbook G4 tower. Using them
together, I imagined I would tape interviews, field audio, etc. with
the MD recorder, then input the audio to the G4 to edit it.

Well it turns out the G4 has no minijack input. I was told to use a
USB port to bring audio in, but am having trouble finding the right
adapter. I'd like to keep the audio digital, but from what I've read
I will have to go from an analog out.

If anyone can suggest the right way to import audio from my MD to my
computer, I would be grateful.

You need a deck with digital out and a sound card with digital in. Once you
get the files on to your hard drive they can be converted into any type of
sound file.

There are probably software programs that will allow you to to convert on the
fly as you are transferring the files to your computer.

You need a deck with digital out and a sound card with
digital in. Once you get the files on to your hard drive
they can be converted into any type of sound file.

You don't *need* digital I/O; you could record it like you would an LP
or cassette, via your soundcard's line in. For example, I record
cassette to MD at the home stereo system, then take the MD recorder (a
R700) to my computer and record from it, to ultimately transfer the
cassette to CD. (For some relatives whose new car has a CD player and no
cassette deck.) It's a lot easier than disconnecting, transporting, and
reconnecting the cassette deck each time. I have a Hercules Game Theater
XP sound card that works nicely for it, too, with front-panel RCA jacks
on the external rack for the line input, and the A/D conversion done
in the rack instead of in the electrically noisy PC. Plug:
http://us.hercules.com/products/product.php3?id=17 for info. Oh, and it
has digital outs and ins, both optical and coaxial.
Of course, keeping the signal digital is always best, but not always
practical.

Re: MD: G$ Audio input

2001-07-28 Thread sopha

hi there,

do you have a power book or a g4 tower? :_)

do you want an external solution (if your using a powerbook that'll be
your only solution) or do you want something internal on a pci slot.

things i would recomend are the m-audio audiophile 24/96, which has
analog inputs and outputs on rca jacks, and digital in and out on spidf
rca jacks, as well as midi in and out. i've found it at a very good
price if your interested with free shipping. when i finally pick up an
audio card this will be the one i get. soundblaster also have their
live card out for the mac, i haven't heard much on it, nor if the
daughterboards with optical in/out work with it.

for an external solution i've heard good things about the roland ua-30,
it's a usb device and has a lot of input output options.

as for keeping your md signal totally digital, you'd need to buy
seperate deck that has a digital out (most do)

Yes. I recorded my band's concert on MD, fed the analog signal into my
computer sound card and saved it as a *.wav file. I used the sound editing
program that came with my CD burning sofware (Nero 5.5) to shorten the times
between songs and burned a CD. The same program will convert *.wav files to
MP3 and burn it to CD, too. Nero: http://www.ahead.de

If you just want some sound conversion programs, try TUCOWS, a treasure

MD: dig. soundcard, again (OT!)

2001-07-28 Thread Gerhard Knez

Hi all,

I just followed the dig. soundcard treads in the past and saw that
there are some very experts here on the list. Maybe you can help me
with this off-topic question:

I have an Roland VSR-880 which is an 8 track harddisk recoding device.
It has an S/PDIF optical output and also a digital chinch output
(would prefer to use the optical). Now I want to connect the Roland to
my computer and upload the 8-track recordings to manipulate it on the
PC (use Win98 and WinNT 4.0). As far as the docu said the 880 presents
every 8 tracks on its digital output.

Is that possible at all?
Which soundcard do I need to get all 8 tracks at the same time
uploaded to my soundprogram?
Is that possible with every card?
What are the technical requirements of an appropriate card?
There are a lot of multi-track soundprograms out there, I assume that
every program that can handle multipe tracks is able to handle the
input, right?
Can anybody give me some advice where to find information about that
(other mailinglist/webpage...)?

You can also contact me directly to reduce the MD-off-topic part on
the list to a minimum if you want.

I hope it's clear what I'm asking (poor english, I'm german).

Thanks alot in advance,
Gerhard

MD: PCLK-U5 in Europe

2001-07-28 Thread 5703171

I don't know how many of you aware about that Sony's campaign in Europe -check this
URL http://www.pclku5.com
In brief Sony is offering pc link adaptor (PCLK-U5 -Xitel's DG2 analog) to all
legitimate owners of some MiniDisk decks or Hi-Fi systems for special price (about
60 euros including delivery).

First of all I was a bit curious if it has anything to do with portables, meaning if I
have MZR-9oo does it mean I am eligible for that
discount?
Next question is what is so special about that price? I could buy Xitel DG2 straight
from Xitel for that money.
Maybe I am missing something terribly important and PCLK-U5 somehow better (or
different)?

Personally, I'm going to wait a little while to see if NET MD ever becomes a
reality. A 900 or 909 isn't going to do any good if you need special circuitry to
download (at supposedly faster speeds) on to MD.

Sony really burns my ass anyway!!! They are constantly coming out with products that
they already have replacements for, but wait to release. When they came out with
their first Beta Cam it did not have auto focus, even though most of the VHS Cameras
did. I knew that the following season they would come out with the new Beta Cam
which had auto focus but sold for the same price as the original. Sure enough that's
just what happened.

They could have and should have come out with DSP Type R when they released the R900!
This planned obsolesce is common in most industries. The drug industry does things
like holding back a new drug which has potentially less side effects, or is more
effective (even though it has been for sale in Europe for several years and will have
no trouble getting a fast FDA approval-they don't have to worry about starting
clinical trials, they have actual on the market data which is even better) because
they just released a similar drug and don't want to compete against themselves.

Why release the 909 when they can first release the 900 and make a big deal about
having the first MDLP portable. Then a year later add DSP Type R.

There is a maximum amount that most people are willing to pay for a portable Md
recorder. So if they release the 909 in sufficient quantity, it will hopefully bring
about a reduction in the price of the R900, 700 and 500.

It's too bad that they don't make a recorder or player with a direct ATRAC out
that could be fed into a USB port and then have software that could read ATRAC
files and would either a: convert the ATRAC files into wav or MP3 or b: give
you the ability to work directly with the ATRAC files.

Imagine if you could upload an MD from your recorder and then manipulate the
tracks by being able to add titles and even sonic enhancements.

Yeah... Sony makes a fuss about NetMD and then releases a new portable

It does seem odd that Sony announces NET MD then comes out with a new
portable that is not a NET MD portable. It's like a step backwards.

Someone else mentioned a soundcard, but Griffin Technologies has a whole
line of audio input devices for G4s:

http://www.griffintechnology.com/audio/

On the cheap end, you'd be happy with the iMic ($35).

The new PowerWave ($99) is a step up, and includes a 10W/channel integrated
amp for output to external speakers.

If you want a great external soundcard that works with the G4, the Onkyo
SE-U55 ($199) offers optical and coax in/out, along with Mic input, line in
and line out, and a headphone jack. It connects to your G4 via USB:
http://www.onkyomm.com/products.cfm?id=1

They also have a cheaper version, the MSE-U33HB ($149):

If you're going to be doing a lot of recording, I would recommend the U55.
It has every input/output you might need, plus recording level adjustments
and good monitoring settings.

Larry, the implication in your post is that compressed digital MP3
recordings will sound as good as, or better than, uncompressed analog

VCR will sound better than any MP3 file. But, as you said, that's only two
hours, compared to 10 with MP3s.

To answer the original poster's question, you shouldn't need any special
cabling -- most hi-fi VCRs have stereo line-in jacks. Simply go from your
tuner or pre-amp/amp to the VCR and press record. Although what I said above
about audio quality won't be as relevant if you're using EP to catch 6 hours
on one tape. The audio quality degrades if you use EP.
