You need to take the 609 test, can get it on the internet for
less than $20, nobody fails an open book test if they are literate.

With brakes, that car is rated at something over a ton IIRC.
If you get something like an A-liner or a light pop-up, you won't hardly notice

Re: [MBZ] R/R Rear Axle Half Shafts

2005-07-30 Thread Paul Raheb
To a short drive to Fresno today where I dropped in at Silver Star Recycling
fresnos. They quoted me $45 for each half shaft +$10 core exchange. What
they had already pulled from various cars didn't look much better than mine
(except my CV boots have rips and are leaking). I took a look around the
yard for some bundt alloys and looked up under one of the 300TDs and saw two
rear axles with BEAUTIFUL rubber! They pulled the two rear axle shafts for
me and away I went. My question is this How does one tell if these are
replaced new OEM by GKN or ACEI remanufactured??? (just curious). Both
shafts have a sticker with bar code on them with the following:
NP5215877575. I know the newer rebuilts are not worth the money. I am
hoping this is either an older rebuild or a new one.

Now onto the work of replacing them.

Is there any decent way to remove the trailing arm bushings without
dropping the entire rear subframe? With the differential, trailing arms,

reinstall and prolly dangerous to remove. I was thinking of disconnecting
the differential mount, and supporting the differential with a jack.
Then lower one side of the subframe at at time. With each side lowered I
could replace the subframe bushings and have access to remove the trailing
arm bushings. Does this sound reasonable?

Are the axles really only held in with the one bolt in the center of the
rear brake disk? Will I need to do anything special to push the axle out?
The manual has a special tool to do that...

I am replacing the rear brake discs and pads, so will probably have those
items removed when lowering the trailing arm to help out with weight...
Driveshaft should be out shortly (waiting on paint to dry for the
alignment mark), and rear shocks and springs are already removed.

Is anything I'm doing very stupid or do you have any suggestions?

have that kind of money... the OEM at ~400 is still pretty hard to
justify.

Avoid aftermarket or muffler shop made ones as you will NOT be happy
long -- the OEM is expensive, but it FITS on the first try, and won't
affect performance. After market parts are mot often junk, won't last
two years.

Thanks for the warning... figured as much, but still had to hope.

You definitely have a bad exhaust -- the noise in the back is indeed a
muffler with no interior baffles anymore.

Good to know... hopefully its making a lot of the road noise as well.

You also need a Klann or identical internal spring compressor to safely

Re: [MBZ] Replacing traling arm bushings

2005-07-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin

yep, thats how you do it without removing the whole thing.

John Robbins wrote:

Is there any decent way to remove the trailing arm bushings without

the differential mount, and supporting the differential with a jack.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 2, Issue 190

2005-07-30 Thread Zeitgeist
Not sure if you were CC'd Dave, but Andrew came up with a rather
elegant solution; tee in a vacuum check valve, into the boost line,
which would avoid trapping pressure in the aneroid chamber. This
would vent manifold vacuum from a separate source, rather than the
ALDA. Another additional option might be to source the ALDA boost
signal right at the turbo, which might help avoid boost lag due to IC
plumbing losses.

Re: [MBZ] 140's, new cars, degrading wiring etc

2005-07-30 Thread Dave M.
About the wiring problem, I'd expect all years to have that issue. On
the W124, every model between 1992-95 had this issue. The replacement
harnesses you buy today, brand-new, are made of the SAME stuff and
will have the SAME problem in another 10+ years. (Hey - don't shoot
the messenger, OK?)

Did they change materials mid-stream on the W140? I don't know for
sure but I highly doubt it. If the car you buy does not have the
harness already replaced, plan to replace it. On the W124's, it's
mostly just the harness that goes from the CAN box to the engine
itself (injectors, sensors, TBA, etc). The alternator harness was
toast on my car too - major PITA to replace. The body harness (to
headlights, etc) is normally NOT affected, which is good, because that
harness is stupidly expensive. All the harness prices can vary widely
based on year and specific model... for example, the 500E harness is
about double a 300E harness (ouch).

Here's a photo of my original alternator harness:
http://www.w124performance.com/images/cars/94_E500/restoration/starter_harness_old.jpg

And here's the new one:
http://www.w124performance.com/images/cars/94_E500/restoration/starter_harness_new1.jpg

Luckily it was 'only' $150 and 'only' took about 6 weeks to arrive
from Germany... my E500 had the engine harness replaced by a previous
owner and so far is not showing signs of failure again.

Our first three kids had second grade teacher who couldn't spell - every
time we walked into the room we corrected a word on the board. Otherwise,
she was excellent. The kids ended up with excellent spelling skills. They
all had 4.0's from high school, one got into Yale and is working on her PhD
in English.
Bottom line - you are responsible for our kids education regardless of where
they go to school. Parents have to be involved with the homework. The
exposure to lots of different people is a very valuable part of public
education.

2005-07-30 Thread Dave M.
Good point, Andrew. Also remember than any restriction in line with
the ALDA will reduce part-throttle power, as the ALDA will get a
delayed signal from the charge pipe. This was the "fix" Mercedes
foisted upon the 1986/1987 models to correct a lean surge with the
cruise control. It's shown in the FSM complete with restriction
orifice, an extra switchover valve, and a bunch more plumbing. With
the EGR/ARV disconnected and ALDA adjusted it's not needed - I removed
it from my cars. I think you would need more than 1-2 inches of vacuum
before it would actually affect fuel delivery but I'm not sure about
that.

Re: [MBZ] Replacing traling arm bushings

2005-07-30 Thread Peter Frederick
You will need to drop the subframe down on the side you are replacing
the bushing, else you cannot remove the outer bolt. Period, not way
around it. You can leave the other side up -- loosen diff mount and
front subframe mount on the side you are changing. It only need to
drop far enough to get the bolt out.

You also need a Klann or identical internal spring compressor to safely
remove the control arm -- the spring will be under considerable
compression when it jumps out of the seat otherwise, very unsafe.

Re: [MBZ] Exhaust

2005-07-30 Thread Peter Frederick
TimeValve stainless steel is the best choice, particularly if you
intend to keep the car any length of time as it will long outlast the
body (so will factory replacement, probably!).

Avoid aftermarket or muffler shop made ones as you will NOT be happy
long -- the OEM is expensive, but it FITS on the first try, and won't
affect performance. After market parts are mot often junk, won't last
two years.

You definitely have a bad exhaust -- the noise in the back is indeed a
muffler with no interior baffles anymore.

Sil-Glide is not an assembly paste, Herman. It has no place in the
piston/cylinder assembly. I've tried several times over the years to
find a proper brake cylinder paste as is listed in many manufacturers'
manuals, always with no success at all. Not familiar with any other
of the products you've listed but I suspect that they're all
anti-squeel products. If you do run across a true brake cylinder
assembly paste I'd purely love to hear about it even though I've never
encountered any problems with using brake fluid during assembly.

[MBZ] Exhaust

2005-07-30 Thread John Robbins
Slowly making progress on my rear end rebuild... in the process I had to
get my exhaust off. Its original and of course rusted together, but
somehow still managed to get it off of the car. I've got a few symptoms
of needing a new exhaust, but if you guys could verify that they are
exhaust so I can justify getting a new one... here's what I've got.

--Black soot around beginning of flex pipe... no question thats a leak.

--Lots of engine noise at speed. Can let off of accellerator and noise
will reduce drastically. Probably related to leak at flex pipe..

--In rear of vehicle (backseat) around 1200rpm or so a VERY loud exhaust
bass noise is heard. Is this a sign of a dead muffler?

Are there any solutions for less than $200? Rusty's site doesn't seem to
have the exhaust prices for my car, but last I checked it was about $400.
I have no qualms with aftermarket so long as it won't be a POS system...
nor do I have a problem throwing the exhaust in the trunk (of another car
;) and handing it to a muffler shop and asking them to duplicate it.

I really don't want to put the exhaust back on the car in one piece if
nothing else... do they make something where I could cut the exhaust and
have some kind of clamp connection system?

Thanks!!!

My rationale (if you can call it that) is that suppose I would end up
putting in $1k or$2k over a year, then having a $2k or$3k solid, decent
looking, nearly 30 yr old car, probably better than any other POS you
could buy for that kind of money. Insurance is nothing, But then again
it is not like I need the car, just seems like a decent deal even if it
ends up needing some more money thrown at it, and I could probably durn
it 4 a profiterole 2 sunwum own ebbbayee.

I plan on rebuilding the Calipers for my 82 300SD. Is there a substitute for
the ATE brake cylinder paste the manual calls for?( I know some people use

The only thing I could find on it was this post on a BMW list. NAPA says they
can get the Sil-Glyde. Has anyone Used it or any others on this BMW post.

The options are:

* ATE brake paste - impossible to get in the U.S. One intrepid
lister has imported some from the U.K., but at great cost.

* AGS Sil-Glyde - available at NAPA or other better auto parts stores
for about $7 a tube. If you don't want to buy a tube, Autozone has
little packets.

* Dow Corning 111 - available at Grainger; $8.50 per tube.

* Lucas/Girling red rubber grease - available from Brit parts houses,
but I didn't pursue it.

* Motorcraft Silicone Brake Grease - I didn't pursue this one.

* Permatex Ultra Brake Lube - supposed to be safe for internal use,
but the MSDS shows it's 90-95% "synthetic oil" so I don't know if
it's truly rubber safe.

The DC 111 grease is good for up to 400F, Sil-Glyde 600F.

I'm not a chemist, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last
night, but the MSDS sheets are available for most of the above if you
wish to explore. Any of them would probably be fine.

I would strongly recommend using grease instead of brake fluid. It
makes everything a snap. The pistons can be pushed back in with only
hand pressure.

Casey,

I have been playing with the signal to the ALDA with the 617 engine,
not yours though. If there is a check valve (at least on the 617) the
ALDA will stay pressurized from your peak boost even after you take
your foot off the go pedal. Until it leaks down to the correct intake
pressure your IP will be spitting out more fuel at a given throttle
position than it should be. Perhaps, Marshall can weigh in and
confirm.

Out of curiosity, how much is a fair amount of vacuum?

My observations are that conservatives like to usurp power from you. Even
though they invent trade deals that put people out of work, they bitch about
the lazy people they just put out of work. They seem to be intolerable of
anyone outside of WASP's or at least English speaking white folks with money.
They also hate unions, school teachers, anyone who makes more money than they
do except well educated conservative anal types, gays, immigrants, people on
welfare, big cities ( where are the liberals live ) except the rich areas, and
of course, people who don't go to church..

Pretty much rules me and half the population out around here. And we all speak
English and are pretty white, but have no real money.

Aha! Good for you. Well, that explains where a lot of your great
leads on cars comes from

Dan

Well I work for trader publishing(aka autotrader) which I usually
drive 150-200 miles per week. When I get done with that job in the
afternoon I have a couple of massive newspaper routes which I drive
another 100 miles(so we are up to at least 250 miles per day). Then
when I get home in the evening I list parts, sell parts, run email
lists etc. On the weekends I work on car projects, strip cars down
to be crushed, or head out of town to pick up more cars. And
sometimes during all that I try and find time to eat and spend time
with the family. As of now (9pm) I have not yet eaten my b-fast,
much less lunch or dinner. Wonder why the hell Im getting fat??

Another clarification... when timing with the wet method (bubble,
drip) you set it to 24°BTDC, but when timing with the special tools or
mirror method, set to 15°ATDC. Big difference! Just hope you don't
need to R&R the pump to correct a 4°+ error... that's no fun on a 601
(or so I'm told.)

Sounds like people are getting Sanford and Son Syndrome... I know it is
tempting to buy all these cheap Benz's but how many do you really need? You
can
only drive one at a time and they take so much work to fix up and keep running
right as they get to be antiques... -Dan

Subject: [MBZ] eBay issues

I bought a vacuum pump for air conditioning work from a seller on
eBay who
has a 100% positive feedback rating (with several sales). The auction
said, "Brand new in the box." The pump I received was definitely NOT
brand
new in the box.

The seller asked what I wanted so I said I wanted to return the pump at
her expense and get a brand new one like the auction said. She
offered to
refund $30 to $50 for me to keep the pump. I then decided I wanted to
return the pump and get my money back, including the shipping of the
pump
back to her. She said OK but that she couldn't refund my money until she
got the pump back.

Well, she's had it since last Friday and hasn't responded to my emails.

Any suggestions on what to do?

There was some mention earlier on this list about how long after an
auction closes one can leave feedback. I looked on the eBay site, but
could find no mention of it. Any idea where to look?

Thanks,

Craig

Re: [MBZ] eBay issues

2005-07-30 Thread Scott Levengood
Craig,

I've had similar situations in which I contacted Paypal when that is how I
paid. The best route to contact them is by using the toll free number that
is not easily found without doing a little digging. If you have paid
through Paypal via credit card, you may also want to contact the credit card
company to initiate a chargeback. I would also recommend opening a case
with Squaretrade. So far, I have always been able to get my money back or
get things straightened out. Good luck!

Sincerely,

-Scott Levengood
