With the hard potted assemblies you start out by grinding down alongside a wire very slowly and with constant visual checks with a dental drill or equivalent; removing all possible potting material in all directions as you go. Eventually you come to a component which you mainly want to identify while keeping it intact if possible. As you continue grinding away the epoxy, more and more components and wires will be exposed and you can figure out how they work. I think this method was used during the cold war to figure out Russian electronics and vice-versa. I did some surfing, and found out some interesting things. Here is a link to a generator vaguely similar to mine: http://www.usdieselengines.com/generator-welder.pdf There are some engine management schematics in it, operating instructions, etc. Unfortunately the electrical end is fairly different. Almost every one of this class of generator I've been able to find information on uses the resonant type of regulation, using mostly just a capacitor. (Such generators don't start heavy motors very well, and apparently don't tolerate _at_all_ capacitive (leading power factor) loads. And I believe they are relatively inefficient in that they burn excess input mechanical power as heat, rather than reduce the field and thus the mechanical load.) Yet mine has a more traditional electronic regulator. Nice, I suppose, when it's working. Not so nice when it fails. (It wouldn't be a problem if it were in a sealed box instead of being epoxy-potted. I can often fix crap like that.) I also found a link to a white paper on the theory of this low-cost regulation system: http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2006/6/14/23147/3970 Interesting reading. The upshot is that the cheap resonant regulator seems to operate, similar to a constant-voltage transformer, by running in saturation and burning excess mechanical energy as heat. They should be markedly less efficient at partial load as a result. And here is an interesting white paper on generator voltage regulator theory: http://lib.tkk.fi/Dipl/2007/urn009728.pdf In it I found the first plausible explanation of why my generator might have two separate excitation windings. One winding reacts to no-load conditions, and the other to short-circuit conditions. One is at the fundamental frequency, and the other is at the third harmonic. Together they span the range of loads from zero to shorted, and give a first-order response for regulation. In other words, the electronics of the regulator itself can be simplified if they're powered from the combination (series?) of these two windings. If this is indeed what I have, my generator is considerably better than the run of the mill. Except, of course, that it is broken. Regardless of its design sophistication, its construction seems no better than any other cheapie. [MBZ] Replacing Engine Mounts 85 300SD ( Was ReplacingInjectors(was Re:1985300SD NastyEngineVibration))
Replaced the engine mounts, engine shocks and transmission mount. The right mount was a bit cracked upon close inspection. The left mount was way past dead. It collapsed with 'full metal contact. I did not notice how bad it's appearance was until I got it out. The pesky tin 'shield' hides it. I has a dickens of a time getting the left mount out. Was unable to get access to the inboard mount to chassis screw. Wound up removing the mount arm off of the side of the engine. Replaced the engine shocks, the old ones were most likely OK but the mount kits did need replacement. The transmission mount looked OK but since I had the new one in hand ... Of course in the middle of all this my floor jack died. Think I got it about 15-20 years ago at Sears. Bought a Chinese copy of my Taiwan made sears Jack. (weird) It is OK but I will need to evaluate it further. The new jack is difficult to regulate on going down slow ...Maybe I'll make an injector test stand from the old jack's pump ...ha ha. Now it is nice and smooth. (and quite), hard for me to get use to bad engine mounts making some thing run like it wants to blow up. It was so loud pedestrians were frightened of it. Under the console cover, if it's like the '87 W124, just lift the carped in the console "bin" and remove screw, then lift up on the bracket (don't pull on the trim panel, you can rip the bracket off). The mirror switch and fader come up with the panel. Bulb is a tiny baseless type, take it with you when looking for a replacement. Same one as the headlight switch and vent control knobs. Re: [MBZ] M103 vs OM603 vs OM617: Help me decide
Ed. Valve guides are replaced with the head off. It is theoretically possible to pull the guides with out removing the head but most likely the valve seats will be worn and would no longer be concentric with the valves and guides. The guides are driven in and usually have to be reamed. Replacing the seals is just tedious not difficult. Remove spark plug, inject air pressure via an adapter to keep the valve hard against the seat. If you can balance the piston that you are working on at TDC it may help stop the valve from falling into the engine should the air pressure fail. (BTDT) remove valve gear at the cyl. that you are working on only (rocker etc.) use an external valve spring compressor ( hooks under the cam and pushes down on the valve spring ) remove keepers (use pencil magnet) gently release compressor and take off the spring. Pull out the seal, check for debris around the valve guide, use the seal protector, ( clear tube supplied with VSOS kit) and put a smear of engine oil around the seal lip and press on. Hand pressure against a deep socket with extension works for me. Curse a bit as you wrestle the seal protector off Replace spring, compress and install keepers. Do the other valve in that pair. Repeat. As we say in Yinglant, Rotsa Ruck! All you genii please add you comments, condemnations and insults. Re: [MBZ] PS fluid question
Tom Hargrave wrote: > Power steering fluid it transmission fluid that has been packaged in small, > expensive cans. Not exactly. It's the base stock used in type A ATF (that hasn't been available in the US in about 20 years). Here's the definitive post as far as I'm concerned: "Anyhow, walking back to my workplace from the dealer's it struck me that MB probably don't make their own PS fluid and it is most likely someone elses in an MB bottle. When I got to work I had a chat with a colleague who's done a lot of contract research for the automotive oil industry. He put me in touch with one of the application engineers at Castrol's R&D centre. After talking with the Castrol engineer it turns out that MB's PS fluid 'Sheet no. 236.3' is actually old-style 'Type A Suffix A' ATF but minus the red dye. Castrol still supply this fluid as 'Agri-ATF' in 5 litre and 25 litre containers. However, the Castrol engineer did say that Dexron II/III is a perfectly acceptable alternative for MB PS applications. The key issue, it seems, is not to top-up with non-MB fluid during the warranty period. If dealers spot any red colouration in the PS fluid they will not honour a warranty claim, on the basis that non-MB fluid has been used in the system." "Type A Suffix A is also the fluid used in the manual gearbox in the 190E, although again without the red dye. The Castrol guy told me that Dexron *can* be used as an alternative, but because it is a more highly friction-modified fluid the synchro action will not be exactly as MB intended when the gearbox was designed. I have therefore drained out the Dexron III that was in my 'box and replaced it with the Type A Suffix A fluid and I can attest that the gearchange is slightly improved, particularly 1-2 and 2-3. BTW it is essential that only ATF is used in these manual gearboxes - the acidic nature of EP-type gear oils attacks the relatively soft synchro. rings that MB uses - shortening the life of the gearbox. ATF is not acidic (I have the details of the chemistry if anyone wants to know - Castrol were very helpful and sent me a fax giving further details). Incidentally, I happen to know that the Type A Suffix A fluid made by the French oil company ELF is not dyed red - maybe they are the people supplying MB?" "Hope this info. may be of use to someone." Hi, All, David & Allan. The 260E ( 198Kmi.) M103.960, that was given to me with 5 cyl. is now running smooth and quiet on all six and burns no oil (M1 15W50) Problem was #6 cyl. had a burnt exh valve. Also found that both sets of guides were very worn, all exh. valves had a groove around the sealing face, about 8 to 10 thou. Replaced. All of the valve stem oil seals were akin to cheap plastic. The rear oil feed to the valve assy. was properly sealed, I checked because it is a known leaker, either into the water or out the pass. rear of the head. Only real difficulty was getting the air intake support brackets back on. (Grumble grumble, gettin' too old for this sh-tuff.) YMMV Fred Moir But it's NOT a Diesel! [MBZ] M103 vs OM603 vs OM617: Help me decide
Gang, Recently transferred from Toronto to the SF Bay area for a couple of years. I'm trying to control myself as I look at all the car candy on craigslist and in local dealer lots. Although I am an MB diesel nutter, I have been tempted by the straight-6 300SE/L W126 machines. They seem to be plentiful and cheap. So far I've stuck to OM617 engines, and in fact to W123 models because they are simple and indestructible. Since my focus for the last 10+ years has been on diesel engines, I've not really paid attention to gassers, but it seems like the M103 engine is pretty good. I lust after a 300SDL (except the 3.5, obviously), but I'm afraid of all the trouble people seem to have with the OM603 engines, especially head cracks, failing tensioners, and engine management issues. I was talking to someone this a.m. who was selling an SDL. 170k.mi, $6k. The engine had overheated and a machine shop welded the head etc. Almost no mileage since the "rebuild". I presume this approach will not last, and that there is trouble waiting in the wings on that car... So what's the deal? Is the M103 a good machine (as good as the venerable M110), or am I just as well with an OM603.961? D. Re: [MBZ] 300D 2.5 Exhaust
My rear muffler/resonator had rust thru holes in the leading edge. Considering the miles I expect it to last it was a relative bargain at $190 from Rusty - that's another advantage Diesels have over gassers - the soot coating the inside of the exhaust makes them last a very long time. > ...he needs the two sun visors (black)... If authenticity is not your aim, your favorite auto upholstery shop can make some out of vinyl-covered cardboard (traditional US visors of yore) that'll fold over the spines from the dead originals. Not too expensive at all. Just measure the originals for size and then remove the spine and let them build around that. Don't let them cover the whole thing, they end up too big. (And how do I know that you ask? :-) The plastic retention clips, both sides, are available aftermarket, newly-manufactured and everything. $50 for the set of four pieces. I'm toying with this approach for the 380. Nobody has visors, unless they're from a wreck where they had replaced them with new prior to the wreck. The foam decomposes, the things end up like sawdust-filled socks with a coat hanger stuck inside. (Such as mine in the 380, or the ones in the 450 prior to their being replaced with new.) They're not cheap, new. I think I got the 450's from Performance Products when they were having a sale. Armrests can be easily re-covered. Chrome seat hinge covers are always broken and/or gone, you just have to buy new ones through your favorite parts supplier. Shiny turds are my specialty.
