[MBZ] Yuengling
Hi Gary, I have known Yuengling as a Philly beer, and the oldest brewery in America. http://www.yuengling.com/distrib.htm Looks like they are still Mid-Atlantic/ East Coast regional beer. I did find this note in their history: 1999 Yuengling purchases former Stroh brewery in Tampa, Florida. Florida market begins selling America's Oldest beer. I don't know if that explains what you see, but is that in your general neighborhood? The reason why you see it everywhere you go lately is because the state of Georgia just started getting the stuff about 6 months ago, so it's probably all the rave down there. I know this because a college buddy of mine now lives in Atlanta and he called me the day he was able to buy a 12 pack of it in the store. For whatever reason, they never had it down there before. Kinda like how NC never had Sweetwater 420 until I tasted some at the Charlotte Oktoberfest in 2007. If nothing else driving 110 miles a day gives me time to think about things... When we rented the tow dolly the kid wouldn't rent it to me because Uhaul thinks a Ranger is too small to tow a 190D (they're probably right) so I quickly tried to convince the kid we'd take the dolly and put it on an F150. He wouldn't let that fly so I just as quickly took another direction and told him I was actually towing an MG B. That (surprisingly) flew just fine. Dwight complimented my quick thinking but actually I'd anticipated the problem. The guys I worked with complained that they were inefficiently putting out crap, but didn't seem inclined to actually work harder, and I got leaned on a bit because I was putting out good parts too quickly until I slowed down. It was almost as bad as the Brit factory stories of the 1970's, the only thing missing was deliberate sabotage. (I guess it was more like the Soviet Union than England, nobody cared to do any more than they absolutely had to) Soon after, the company (Johnson Controls by then) told the union how far wages would have to go down to get the bottom line out of the red, and refused to negotiate any more than that for the new labor contract. The union went on strike, and Johnson closed the factory, because they were unwilling to run a factory with negative profit and the union was unwilling to do anything that would result in actual profit. OK, that part I do understand. Seems a lot of effort to swap an engine though before finding out what the damage is on the one in there. However, I do understand. I have a boat in that situation. Loud knock from the lower end and I am guessing it will need the crank and the whole works so I just bought a small block Chevy short block assembly used that should swap in quickly. Will see what the damage is in due course but likely going to be bad. Boat is a bit easier to swap however as once the doghouse is removed, it is pretty much wide open. Its a pre-face-lift W220 bleh! Nice ones at respectable dealers are not even worth much when compared to their original price tag. One that has a very questionable history is essentially worthless. You can easily put $5000 into this car for "normal" repairs. Yes, and I even have the MB tool and new bits to install. I've had them on the shelf for about two years now, need to just make some time and get 'er done! I'm going to see what HF and Sears have. Looked at the book last night, I need to check for 38 to 43 psi after the fuel filter. Filter was changed in the last few years, but I'm wondering if low pressure caused by a plugged filter might be the source of the trouble. Re: [MBZ] ALTERNATOR LIGHT WOE
As described, the job was too easy. The VR seemed to be just fine. I noticed that the bail was off, it holds the plug into the back of the alternator, so I pulled the plug out and cleaned the contacts up with some Radio Shack contact cleaner. Reinstalled plug and its bail, checked voltage at the battery with engine running at idle (13.8 volts). This a.m. there were no issues with the light coming on, so I may have just had some dirty electrical contacts. Also checked the belt, tension was fine. I did not have time to T/S any of the noises, which seem to be mostly loose and rattling stuff, maybe this weekend I'll be able to take a look. That being said, I've also learned that when the brushes have been too short for awhile, the rings in the alternator are often black or burnt, or both. A little fine sandpaper cleaned up mine so the alternator works again. Hope this isn't a trend or epidemic, but my '92 300D 2.5 wouldn't start this morning - just figured out that the battery is dead. Don't know whether the 2 1/2 year old (84 month) battery is toast, or if the alternator isn't charging yet. This is the only alternaotr in my collection that doesn't have a new VR/brush pack yet. As it will be 20F in the AM, I hope charging the battery out of the son's parked 190D will cure the situation. Re: [MBZ] Thermostat behaviour
Regardless, once you peg the temperature gauge, the odds are high that the thermostat needs to be replaced, UNLESS you had an air pocket in the top of the head. The late Dieseling Doctor used to say that the wax pellet in the t-stat would deform to the point that it no longer worked correctly. I like the idea of an air pocket in the system, especially if you recently drained/filled the coolant. Need to have the nose of the car elevated, begin fill at the upper radiator hose into the engine, keep heat setting on full heat and patiently fill in as much coolant as possible. I like to burp the system by squeezing the upper radiator hose until air no longer bubble up into the expansion tank and I don't hear air gurgling around when I squeeze the hose. A good sign that you have an air pocket is a gurgling sound under the dash upon hard acceleration.
