[MBZ] Let's try this again: caveat emptor reginald stone
Sorry about the empty message before; this is what I was trying to send: Ok, Im ready to name names: the guy who sold me the bum Vanagon is Reginald Reggie Stone of Shoreline - buyer beware this seller. (To be fair, I should emphasize that I did understand it to be an as is sale, and that, due to the rarity of the commodity, I skipped the usual security of an independent inspection prior to purchase. However, the guy sold an engine w/ a bad head gasket w/o disclosing that defect, and when later confronted w/ this, flatly refused to make good in any way.) DG __ Yahoo! Re: [MBZ] Bio prices
I think we pay for them to mix it for us (plus it's been suggested to me that the tax break is less for B20 than it is for B99); I observed the same phenom where I get mine: the price order, lowest to highest, was B0 (by only $0.02), B99, B20, by about $0.10 or so. Whether B0 or B100 is more expensive, B20 _should_ be in between; if it ain't just mix it yourself at the pump (assuming where you buy it has B100 or B99; if not, I guess you're out of luck. Easy way to estimate how much B0 and B100 you need for B20: estimate how much total you need, then divide by 5 (which is same as doubling and then dividing by 10) put that much B100 in, then filler-up with B0; for info purposes only, I do not endorse purchasing any amount of fossil fuel). How'd you score the high-tech filter - surplus auction? DG --- Christopher McCann [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I wasn't really implying anything, just making an observation. Yes, Fuel prices will lead to price inflation in general, but Europe has had high fuel prices forever and it's still cheaper to buy bulk fresh VO than it is to buy D2 or BioD (the cheapest fuel at the pump). We may be facing that scenario. Conversion prices cover quite a range. Frybrid, the best, is $1,700. My friend and I finished installing his last night and we're now running 100% VO. It is rather amazing. The savings, for us, will be a very convenient supply of oil (got a guy lined up for this) and a fast, clean and VERY efficient filtration method (using an industrial centrifugal filter in my garage - sub micron purity). [MBZ] Making a 2000 Dodge 2500 diesel Biodiesel ready
Hi, folks! Wife and I are on the verge of buying an '00 Dodge 2500 diesel to run on biodiesel. My main concern, given my history, is with fuel injector return lines. On examining the engine, I noted that the injectors appear to be inside the engine block, or at least not have return lines. Which of these is in fact the case? If the injectors are inside the block, do they have return lines, and if so, are they made of rubber, metal, or what? If made of non-Viton rubber, how difficult is it to get at them to replace them? Are there any other biodiesel-related issues particular to Cummins diesels of this era of which we should be aware? Also, the engine was louder than we expected (and we've heard other diesels, including other diesel pick-ups which we've test driven, but all these were Fords) but otherwise seemed to run smoothly; could that be cause for concern? Finally, about when do these vehicles need the timing belt replaced, and about how expensive a service is that (parts and labor)? Sorry to bother you, and thanks! DG __ Yahoo! If the injectors are inside the block, do they have return lines, and if so, are they made of rubber, metal, or what? If made of non-Viton rubber, how difficult is it to get at them to replace them? I don't believe that the cummins has external return lines, so I wouldn't be worried about that. Are there any other biodiesel-related issues particular to Cummins diesels of this era of which we should be aware? The Cummins has a fuel lubricated injector pump. If the IP doesn't get enough fuel and you have your foot into it, damage will occur. The biodiesel will likely lube the IP better than dino diesel, as long as it gets enough of it (i.e. bad lift pumps, partially clogged filters towing heavy loads for a long time, etc). This isn't bio related, but those are a stone cold b!tch to get started if you run them out of fuel. One of my friends did that, and it required loosening injectors - the primer pump wasn't enough. Also, the engine was louder than we expected (and we've heard other diesels, including other diesel pick-ups which we've test driven, but all these were Fords) but otherwise seemed to run smoothly; could that be cause for concern? The cummins for whatever reason was much louder than the IDI GM engine of that year, and the DI powerchoke. It also outweighs both. Finally, about when do these vehicles need the timing belt replaced, and about how expensive a service is that (parts and labor)? There was something about a weak timing cover in the cummins, can't remember if it was on the 24v engines or the 12v engines. Regardless, the timing chain doesn't have a short service interval like a TDI. There is also a certain range of blocks you want to avoid. There is a faq out there somewhere about this - check tdr or other ram web forums for that. [MBZ] Biodiesel mpg benefits from timing advance? (was Approx. 35mpg from an '87 Mercedes 300D TURBO Diesel)
My recently deceased '82 240D ran fine on B99, but underperformed in the mpg category (though I imagine part of that was probably my average speed over 70mph); I noticed no such problem w/ my '03 TDI (same mpg, more or less, with B99 or B0). It was suggested to me by more than one party (incl. here on this list, I believe) that this _might_ be alleviated by advancing the timing a little; this didn't need to be done, it was claimed, on the TDI 'cause the electronic timing control was automatically doing it dynamically. DG --- Zeitgeist [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: No need to adjust the timing for B99, though I've advanced my OM603 2 degrees to 13 degrees ATDC for other purposes. The full story: very shortly after getting my car back from Dr. Dan's last Thurs., the Check Engine light came on, so I quickly brought it back to him. His VAG-COM returned a glow plug #3 problem, which he reported is a very common problem on that car. I was going to take the car (my wife's) back to Dr. Dan's today, but she needed it down in Oly, so I thought I'd continue to try to find someone down in Oly I could prevail upon to see if it's still complaining about GP3 before taking it back to Dan's, probably tomorrow. Re: [MBZ] Importing diesels from CA
Great, thanks, we may take you up on that. DG --- Rory [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Here's the skinny on importing cars from Canada. I have had new cars imported, but it depends on cooperation from the US side of the manufacturers operations. Many new cars are identical to US modesl, but in the interest of the US dealers, the manufacturer won't give a letter of compliance to the consumer. In my experience, once a vehicle is six months old (registered for six months) it is no longer new, and the manufacturer is more helpful. There are some models which are extremely difficult (read $$$) to import due to such things, as previously mentioned, as restraints. The speedometer changover is not required, as the CDN models have the mph equivalants where the KPH readings ar on US models. A common manufacturer letter would state basically, this vehicle, identified by the VIN, meets all US safety (with the exception of markings) and emission standards in effect for the year of manufacture. When a person presents this letter, we verify the VIN, charge duty, if required, and issue a CBP Form 7501 which is presented at the person's state vehicle licensing office as proof of legal entry into the US. In cases where the vehicle does not meet standards, the vehicle will be imported formally through a broker, and when proof of compliance is provided by a RI, the bond is cancelled, and the vehicle released with the 7501. Ideally, you'd want a vehicle which meets the standards without modifications. All 88-95 Mercedes fall into this category, and as an added bonus, they are marked as compliant, so no manufacturer compliance letter is required. On the down side, these are mostly gasoline models. I have a list of manufacturer contact tel#'s as well as fax #'s. Re: [MBZ] OT: Why'd VW Pull the TDI Passat?
Exactly, it's absolutely insane: University VW (in Seattle) confirmed there are no new '05 TDI Passat wagons West of the Rockies, and only a few left East of 'em; this is in the US, however - North of the border, I easily found three Vancouver, BC area dealers each with multiple '05 TDI Passat Wagons in stock! The most plausible hypothesis I hear consistently is that they underestimated US demand, can't meet it, and want to make sure they keep their existing TDI customers in the rest of the world happy, so we get the short end of the stick. So he got to Boston a total of 3 hours late but that was okay because they'd left plenty of extra time. For the trip home the train left a mere 4 hours late and apparently the connection between the ends of the train had broken so going home they couldn't go more than 40MPH. Re: [MBZ] URGENT Need for Viton fuel hoses in Puget Sound
Well, perhaps you'd like to come clean the gallon plus of B50 off the floor of my carport. All I know is that after only 33K miles this happened to our TDI about 6 weeks or so ago and at that time we were advised to replace the hoses, the failed and not failed, w/ Viton or silicone-based. We let our mechanic have his way with our car, but I now know he didn't use Viton, and given that the hoses he did install on my 240D soon after I bought it this past Oct. have failed after only 11,000 miles (he says today he warrants them for only 6 mo. or 6000 miles) I'm quite concerned for the TDI as well. I'll go with the Viton and if they don't fail within the year, I'll invite you again to come look at the stains on my carport floor. Can't one get steel or brass hose clamps if this is the issue? Thanks!!! DG, The factory braided lines will last about 8 years, even using B100. Why not just call Rusty and order a meter of the proper fuel return hose. It is braided so when properly installed, it will not fall off. forget about clamps. Forget about Viton. With all the money you will be saving you can afford to replace these lines once or twice in the next 20 years. Don't forget to ask for a new end of line plug, yours may have fallen off. Re: [MBZ] URGENT Need for Viton fuel hoses in Puget Sound
--- Mitch Haley [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I can't comment on your VW, other than to wonder where you get your B50, and if it might be B40/M10 from not removing the methanol. I get 1/2 a tank of B100 (99 lately, actually) from a CFN cardlock station in Oly and then fill 'er up with petrol diesel. When our TDI had the same problem, I did suspect the fuel, so I brought a sample to my mechanic who said he could test it, but he reported no problems (I do suspect, however, that the age of the fuel I get there might be an issue). Personally, I'm now convinced it's primarily the heat (which is the best explanation I got at the TDIClub biodiesel forum): it only just started to get into the upper 80's around here; I've been stuck in traffic in the heat alot recently (and when I'm not I push the engine, if you know what I mean); and though still far from the red, just before my wife noticed the puddle under my car, I noticed my temperature reading was a little higher than I usually see it. As Viton is rated to withstand temps up to 550degF, I'll place my faith in it. I do wonder what hose your indy used on the 240D. Did it have a cloth sheath on it? Yes; for the courtesy of your address, I'd be happy to send you (and any other interested readers) a piece to examine. DG P.S. for redghost: Bow Wow does not inventory Viton tubing - good thing I called before I went there. __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! True, the SLS pump would be a parasitic loss that the sedan wouldn't have unless it had the SLS option. I think the bigger difference is the weight and the wind resistance. I would imagine that the wind resistance for the wagon is higher? Probably lower. My experience with other makes is that the wagon usually has a lower drag coefficient. It might seem hard to believe, but that squared off rear end is actually more aerodynamically efficient than the notchback sedan design. The notchback allows quasi-stationary eddies and generally lower free-stream air velocities in the notch, which translates into larger drag. DG __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Re: [MBZ] Re: OT: Another Bimmer diesel
Casey- Did you see how much that converted-to-diesel 280Z went for on Ebay some months back, something close to (or over) $13K I believe. Granted, w/ 7+ more days to go, this car probably won't stay below $2K, but you buy that car, put the engine in a sexier body, and I bet you could at least triple your money.
