my 79 280CE was vandalized to the point of destruction this weekend by
members of this organization:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mara_18

upon discovery this morning, i called both state farm insurance and the de
kalb county police department. i have since again called the de kalb county
police department. as of 3pm, i have no response from either on this
matter.

as a "good citizen", i am expected to pay my "fair share" for costs of
government. i am expected to pay health care, education, imprisonment, etc
for these gang bangers (and probably illegals) who destroyed my car in a
parking lot in plain site of one of the busiest thoroughfares in the atlanta
metropolitan area. and when i ask my government to take a police report on
this matter (i am not even so unreasonable as to ask them to actually take
an interest in the gang perpetrators who are likely not even supposed to be
in this country), they basically tell me "don't call us, we'll call you".

so now i'm waiting for them to call for six hours.

can any of you honestly say that we still have a country here?

I grew up an ardent patriot and defender of the united states as the
greatest nation the world has ever know.

now i grow more and more disgusted to be an american every single day.

my country is just a passport and a shakedown.

Had one. Loved it. Check for rust under rear seat esp. passenger side.
Frame rot you don't want or need. other wise a 55mph ~ 50 mpg cruiser. I drove

I was behind an E320 --> BLUETEC today. First one I have seen with
that designation. A bit before that I was behind an E320 > CDI. I
don't know if this badging aspect of Bluetec was covered in the recent
discussion or not.

I was also behind and in front of a blue Checker Marathon that provided
massages to Goddesses and Womyn, and it had the bright lights on the
whole time and no apparent working turn indicator lights. The driver
definitely did not appear to be the former, and I am also somewhat
unsure about the latter aspect.

Marshall,

I agree that wash down is not a problem in a fuel injected car because
of the way the fuel is managed - the fuel is sprayed into the manifold,
usually well into the manifold & is well atomized.

But it is a problem in carbureted cars, even Mercedes. Gasoline wash
down is caused by fuel condensing out of the charge - the same process
is what makes carburetor chokes a necessity. If fuel condensing out of
the charge were not an issue then carbureted cars would only have a high
speed idle & would not need a choke for cold starting. The choke
enriches the fuel mixture to make up for the fuel that is condensed out
of the charge. But the fuel droplets tend to be larger when the choke is
closed & this actually adds to the problem.

Carbureted Mercedes gas engines do not wear out AS FAST, not because
gasoline wash down is not an issue but because the engines are made from
much harder steel then the mild iron American engines. Also, American
engines through the early 70's tend to be tuned richer for performance &
driveability. Tuning rich also adds to the problem.

That's seldom a problem in a well engineered and maintained engine. The
cylinder walls of MOST well cared for Mercedes engines aren't seriously
worn even after a quarter or even a half a million miles although using
a synthetic might improve that slightly. Synthetics really do reduce
most cold accelerated bearing wear (and other friction caused wear).

[MBZ] Brake Theories

2007-02-05 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, All.
It's too cold and windy to go out and check my brakes on the 190DT, so I'll ask
dumb questions in the warm.
Whilst driving yesterday I heard a right rear brake scrape when nearly stopped.
Looked thru the wheel, nothing. The brakes were done about 2 months ago, by me,
new disks and pads and shoes from Rusty (All Hail Rusty!), so the only things
that I can think of are:- Seized caliper or blocked hose or? All comments
reviewed for content.
TIA

Gump is keeping her charge light on while I drive. Not the bright
light you get prior to starting, but a subtle little glow that just
will not go out.

Is the battery going bad? Might the alternator not be doing its job of
feeding more volts back? A short someplace quietly draining my
battery?

Assistance needed.

1972 220D, 85 month battery bought new in 9/04, fresh belt from Rusty
in 11/06, started in the last cold snap when the light came and stayed
on bright after starting her on a 20*f day

Just disassembled the little joystick in the center console that controls
the passenger side rear view mirror hoping to change the bulb. (I'm on a
quest to get every interior light working in my 124.) Picking through the
remains after the mandatory explosion of springs and other tiny parts, I
discovered that the bulb is not only soldered into place but also smaller
than the other little bulbs used throughout the console (e.g. in the air
vent adjuster wheels). I can't find this little bulb on Rusty's site---is
this a Radio Shack item? I hate to pay for a whole new switch.

22 Million Mac OS X Users

by Glenn Fleishman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
article link:

We often wonder how many of us there are. While Apple occasionally
shares the number of active Mac OS X users, it has been a while
since the last update. Eight months ago in August 2006 at Apple's
Worldwide Developers Conference, Steve Jobs said there were 19
million active Mac OS X users. Keith Bachman, an analyst at Bank of
America Securities, now quotes a higher number in an AppleInsider
article: 22 million users of all versions of Mac OS X. Bank of
America Securities estimates an increase of 6 million Mac users
since the release of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger in June 2005. It's also
highly likely that there are uncounted millions of users still using
Mac OS 9 and earlier.

Hi, All.
My odo is stuck between 000 and 009 and the button stayed down, the direct

not so much a myth as not enough people have broken their odo whilst moving to

Greetings and Salutations.
This tool thread is oddly timely as I have been searching for a second (backup)
of an Husky ratchet 22203 that is particularly useful, "handy" if you will.
I called Husky (Stanley) and the said that it was only available in sets at big
box stores (House brand at Home Depot) and they would be glad to send me one
for free. Well, it arrived yesterday, a close copy but made in China, not as my
original, Made in the good old US of A!

Mine was hit in the right front tire, so my left fender, hood, and grill
are OK. Star got vandalized later. Coolant leaks somewhere, I'm afraid it's a
plastic part of the radiator. Did your headlights survive?

When my '87 2.5D blew the head gasket, it was that "The car idles horrendously

Now 0-60mph is right on the money. measured 0-100kph in the 12 to 13 secs

Total cost of parts and head skimming (did my own guides and seats) was less

Re: [MBZ] M103 vs OM603 vs OM617: Help me decide

2007-09-21 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, All, David & Allan.
The 260E ( 198Kmi.) M103.960, that was given to me with 5 cyl. is now running
smooth and quiet on all six and burns no oil (M1 15W50)
Problem was #6 cyl. had a burnt exh valve. Also found that both sets of guides
were very worn, all exh. valves had a groove around the sealing face, about 8
to 10 thou. Replaced. All of the valve stem oil seals were akin to cheap
plastic. The rear oil feed to the valve assy. was properly sealed, I checked
because it is a known leaker, either into the water or out the pass. rear of
the head.
Only real difficulty was getting the air intake support brackets back on.
(Grumble grumble, gettin' too old for this sh-tuff.)
YMMV

I've heard it is. Valve stem seals may be an issue. I don't have any
firsthand experience though.

Re: [MBZ] M103 vs OM603 vs OM617: Help me decide

2007-09-21 Thread Frederick Moir
Ed.
Valve guides are replaced with the head off. It is theoretically possible to
pull the guides with out removing the head but most likely the valve seats will
be worn and would no longer be concentric with the valves and guides. The
guides are driven in and usually have to be reamed.
Replacing the seals is just tedious not difficult. Remove spark plug, inject
air pressure via an adapter to keep the valve hard against the seat. If you can
balance the piston that you are working on at TDC it may help stop the valve
from falling into the engine should the air pressure fail. (BTDT) remove valve
gear at the cyl. that you are working on only (rocker etc.) use an external
valve spring compressor ( hooks under the cam and pushes down on the valve
spring ) remove keepers (use pencil magnet) gently release compressor and take
off the spring. Pull out the seal, check for debris around the valve guide, use
the seal protector, ( clear tube supplied with VSOS kit) and put a smear of
engine oil around the seal lip and press on. Hand pressure against a deep
socket with extension works for me. Curse a bit as you wrestle the seal
protector off
Replace spring, compress and install keepers. Do the other valve in that pair.
Repeat.

Hi, Ed et al.
100psi. plus works well, note that in most home air systems there is a lot
of water, so don't take all day to do one cyl it might just rust up over night.
Locking the crank is probably the best idea. It is sometimes impossible to
balance the crank/piston at TDC as it likes to quickly go to BDC under pressure!

Re: [MBZ] Replacing valve stem seals.

2007-09-23 Thread Frederick Moir
Robert et al.
Your reasoning is good. The only caveat is that it may be very difficult to
hold the valve up, install the spring and compress same whilst trying to
install the keepers. If the valve falls to the piston crown by some amount that
"gap" will require that the spring be further compressed to get the keepers in.
On some engines this may be as much as a quarter inch or more, less on MBZ.

Robert Bigham <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hello Fred and all
I finally reasoned that if the piston on the Ford was at or near TDC, a
valve could not fall into a cylinder because there just isn't room for that
to happen. And they didn't. because there is not room enough. Valve
hits piston long before the stem disappears into the guide. And even if it
does, a pencil magnet will retrieve it.

Actually, we're talking about neither. We're talking about the rubber

the door is shut -- otherwise known as weatherstripping.

Craig, I have worked an aeronautical (periscopic, bubble) sextant to .25
degree, but .004 is, indeed, a bit fine for B-52 celestial navigation.
Considering all the other variables and inherent errors involved (each one
with its correction applied), even .25 degree was a bit silly. Even
navigator judgment could be a significant part of a celestial fix
(position). B-52 navigators used to say, "We measure it with calipers, mark
it with a grease pencil and chop it with an ax."

[MBZ] Cruise Control?

2007-04-06 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, All.
This is an attempt to find out what's going on.
Car:- 87 190DT.
History:- Vehicle has been in at least one accident and received a cheap repair
by some body shop that didn't care about their reputation. There are a few
systems that had failed or were damaged in said accident. ie A/C plumbing, ABS
control valve assy. (although it does still work), the security system box is
missing, and the Tempomat box was unplugged. Checked inside the cruise control
box and there are a few traces burned off. Further investigation revealed that
the box, 002 545 16 32 is not the correct box according to the EPC. It should
be 023 545 21 32.
Question. Will the 002 545 21 32 or 003 545 09 32 work in this car without
needing a fire extinguisher? Or must I find the correct(?) one 023 545 21 32?
Help! Pleeez.
TIA
Fred Confuzulum Moir

True, but empirical evidence collected by drivers does not change.
The old epa system over-rated mileage of gassers. For diesels, it was
pretty accurate.
the prius is currently over-rated in many ways, not just mileage.

A well tuned diesel whether 40 years old, or 25 or less will get better
mileage than gassers, and when driven by some drivers can exceed the epa
estimates.

If you eat a big bean burrito (here in Houston there are taco trucks
everywhere, you can get big ones, small ones, some tacos to go with),
then sit on a plastic trash bag about 30 min later, I think that will
fix you right up as far as the pillow goes. You can also adjust the
size according to your preferences by additional, um, inputs.

[MBZ] French Diesel

2007-04-26 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, Curt et al.
My aunt had a 504 SW (gas) that she adored, and I thought that it was ok with
its long-legged suspension and strange shift pattern. I subsequently looked at
a new 505 SW diesel and was not too impressed. Old push-rod style engine about
100 hp and not too fast, though economical, 30mpg plus, as I remember. Best
thing about it was the Bosch injection. The 604,5,6 were aimed at the upper
segment of the market, so they were fancier than most other Peugeot cars. If
it is rust free and the engine trans are good, they can be economical fun to
drive, a la 2.2 190D. Some of the gas engines from that era had soft cams and
seized the oil pump relief valves and other expensive bits.
YMMV

Well, he did say that the antenna goes up and down. Perhaps that is
worth a few thousand dollars. (If the 95K miles is correct this would
be good car, but I can't see spending more than $1200-$1500 on this
car.) =20

I bought a 1981 240D in beautiful condition in 2003 for $1100. It was an
auto. It only had 130,000 miles. Man, those cars are dogs. My shadow

[MBZ] Re M103

2007-04-28 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, All.
I had an M102 85 that had similar symptoms to you 103. Cured it by using M1
20w50 for the lifter rattle and a new (Bosch) Mustang V8 O2 sensor (plus
adapter from J/Y).
Car ran very well with 180k miles and would pass MA emissions for 2006!
You need to find out what is causing the rich running or it will wear out you
engine much too soon. Black gritty oily plugs and no smoke off idle is probably
rich mixture.
IMHO.

Thanks for you help Peter. My thought was, maybe a bad O2 at first, but
didn't think that could four the plugs so fast. I mean, they were place
after only a few miles of use. The were filthy when I changed them, and I
pulled the new ones ater about 5 miles just to have a look, and they were
dark! As for mileage and oil use exactly, I can't tell as I've only drive
the car about 200 miles since buying it. I did the old Italian tune up
thing and drove it hard tonight and will check the plugs again tomorrow.

Thanks for the tip with the 02 sensor. My friend is an electricial and has
a Fluke mulit meter. I'll see if he can get any reading as you suggested.
I also plan to have a friend over in the next week or so to help me with a
compression test.

Thanks again Peter and I may have more questions for you in the coming week
or so.

Take care,
Ed

[MBZ] 190DT Probs.

2007-05-04 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, Alles.
The 190DT has been in at least one accident, maybe more, and I've just
discovered that the rear windscreen was replaced. The insulated flat metal
electrical connectors on the glass were removed from the old (broken?) window
and are just hanging there with the sharp residue of glass particles still
attached. The replacement window has a flat metal connector on the pass. side
but none on the dr. side. Q. Can the old electrical connectors be somehow
fastened to the strip at the edge of the glass? If so, how?
Or am I scrod?
TIA

My neighbors accross the lane have one of that approximate vintage. I know only
a couple of things about it. They
had the turbo replaced under warranty. It does not produce much heat in winter.
They had an aftermarket heated seat
setup installed to help. They like it.

I know many of you are knowledgeable on VW models.

We're looking casually at an '04 Golf TDI and need the inside information
regarding any known issues with that particular model.

We may go look at it today or tomorrow, but want any red flags to save us a
trip.

Just bid to win. You can take the key to a locksmith and have

Andrew,

I would highly suggest that you consider R&R of the
pushbutton assembly and resolder the joints on the
boards. While this isn't the typical fix for
monovalve problems, you're probably due for it anyway.

I have pictures of the procedure if you want them...

Re: [MBZ] Water Pump?

2007-05-15 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, Stuart, et al
By my experience you have a water flow problem.
1. Failed or part open thermostat.
2. Partially plugged radiator.
3. Water pump failure.

MB water pumps are robust, so if it is not leaking, a quick r&r to check the
vanes will show any failures. The rest, you should check for crud between ac
condenser and radiator, fan function etc.

Yes, as for some folks actually "being good", when you live by some sort of
code of behavior - Amish, Buddhist, whatever, you usually wind up
benefitting society. Unless your code is fundamentalist Islam, or
Gangsta-Stop-Snitchin, or other systems that are fatally flawed.

As Chris Elliot said on an episode of King of Queens "I think we can all
agree that the Amish are pretty great."

I used to deliver tractor trailer parts in southern PA. When I'd go up to
the "Lankister" area, it sucked getting caught behind so many carts.

Around here, on the frontage road to I-90, I sometimes see a guy standing on
an open cart being pulled by two horses - the cart is dragging one large
tractor tire. Didn't know if he was exercising the horses, or smoothing out
the dirt road?

We see an Amish dad and two boys at the farmer's market here in town. The
thing that freaks me out is the hands on those little boys! They're like
little shrunken down man hands! Freakish. So oversized and proportioned like
an adult's. And rough and dirty looking - like they'd still look dirty even
when washed.

And are the Amish loosening their standards on not using technology? I see
them more and more riding around in cars.

I figure what the heck, there's a lot of OT on the list lately, and Rich
seems to be the only one reading this.

What colour is the car? Up here in Ontario we've got a Mennonite
settlement in the town of St. Jacob's, near Waterloo (RIM's HQ).
You'll frequently see the horsecarts on the roadside, but sometimes
you'll also see the Mennonites in cars, but only black ones. Rumour
has it there are old world and new world Mennonites. The former shun
all modern conveniences, but the latter are allowed to drive cars, as

[MBZ] 190D 2.2 1984

2007-05-26 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, All.
When bought this car it had a giant oil leak from the front timing cover,
broken in 3 places from (I guess) a broken chain, also pan had chip out of it.
Ran well and did not smoke. Found that the engine had been replaced with one
from an '85 with manual trans.
This late '84 2.2 190D has had the head redone, (valves, guides, 0.007" planed
off etc.) has no oil pressure to the camshaft. Lifters rattle and are all
bereft of tension, even the new one that came rock hard from Rusty. With cam
cover off, engine running there is no squirt from the cam towers on to the cam
itself. Initially I had the wrong head (J/Y replacement early '84, who knew?)
Didn't run the wrong head. Rusty bailed me out with his extensive knowledge of
MB's (All Hail Rusty!) and he sent me the correct gasket. When running with
the correct head, runs well and starts instantly and has excellent oil
pressure. OK, Oh most wonderful and knowlegeable list Magi, what have I f**ked
up?

It's up to almost $1,300. I was thinking if I could get it for $500
it might have be worth sorting out all the problems, but it was past
that price days ago.

Please bear in mind that folks who drive larger vehicles have some difficulty
in safely passing you in traffic. I
have had a Suburban and now a couple of F150's. I don't want to clip some poor
cyclist with my mirror while trying
to get around him and not hit the car/truck in the lane next to me. After
holding up traffic behind me to cleanly
get around the cyclist, it really irks me to have him pass me at the next light
and have to do it all over again in
the next block or two. I have tried pulling close to the curb before stopping
to send the message but that seems to
enrage cyclists and I have had them bang on my vehicle.

I understand folks who wish to ride as they want the exersize or don't have a
car. I have friends who do it but I
don't plan to join them and I really think that city traffic is a lousy place
to ride. I think a cyclist really
needs to be mindful of how much bigger and heavier a truck is. I can't stop on
a dime and any error on their part
or my part is gonna hurt. Do do yourself a favour and stay as far away from
trucks as you can. Don't push the rules
of the road or your luck as you aren't going to win. Please be safe out there.
I'm gonna lose sleep if I ever run
one of you over.

I gave up my Honda Goldwing for similar reasons. I was able to keep up with
traffic obviously, but the fools in the
trucks were willing to ride 2 feet from my back fender. I try to give
motorcycles a whole lot of room as I remember
how I felt. However, the common thing is that if I leave a little too much
room, some other fool pulls into the
space between me and the bike so it doesn't always do much good to be nice.

See, this is really amazing to me: It is literally expected that a bicyclist
will stop way back from a red light - sometimes a half a mile or more - and
wait beside the car that they are next to? And this gets confusing when you
consider which car to choose to wait beside. I mean it's a law, right, so
let's follow it exactly.

If traffic is already stopped and backed up at a light, you are required to
pull up along side the rear-most car and wait there?

And if you are cruising along side traffic and it slows and stops in a line
at a light, you are to find a car that is about to roll to its stop, and
pick it as your car to wait beside?

If it sounds crazy, I think it is!

I don't consider advancing past stopped traffic at a red light "passing"
(though I know it is legally considered so). I simply consider it advancing
along in my legitimate and legal bike area (th

I have a pitifilly meager supply of tools yet my wife has the predictable
amount of shoes. However, my theory may still hold true, as my tool supply
is made up for in what, to my surprise, has slowly become an impressive
supply of shoes for myself (since meeting her).

My thoughts nowadays go: Man, I need this shoe for this, and that shoe for
that, I can't wear that shoe for that...

Ball joint failure USUALLY occur a slow speeds and tight turns (not sure
why) but they CAN occur at speed (9 of the ten reports I have -
including my own 300TD - are at slow speeds when maneuvering). I would
NOT trust a damaged ball joint more than a few months, but that's
ENTIRELY a matter of how worn the joint is. There is NO criteria for how
long it will last once you lub it. One that had only recently started to
deteriorate MIGHT last for years and one that was worn to 98+% of the
failure point might let go as you drove out of the driveway the first
time. You REALLY don't want one to fail on you - especially not at speed!

One time I returned from a trip and emptied the nylon drawstring laundry bag

A TSA card fell out with the dirty underwear. I kept that card for a

2 sets of points from my VW days Bosch# 1 237 013 044-740. These were for late
model air cooled VW (among others). One in blister-pac one not, unused plus an
after market rotor.
A Saab tool for releasing the shift cable from early 70's 99 transmissions and
the rubber plug with ring handle to fit the cis system between the plate and
distributor to seal up the access hole for mixture adjust.
Clear as mud, right? Free for the asking and I'll send snail mail free too.

[MBZ] Semi O.T. A/C Kweshun

2007-06-28 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, All.
Wife's 99 Toy is loosing it's cool. Still works but not as cool as it was.
I have RTFM and have all necessary stuff and tools. The Question is this:- if
some portion of the gas has leaked out, and presumably some of the oil, how do
you estimate the quantity of oil remaining? Do I use one of those charge cans
with oil, or will that over oil things?
Hot and sweaty dope wants to know. (correction NEEDS to know! Wifely comment)

Hi, Al.
Re SWMBO's Toy Corolla 1999. Purchased an Interdynamics R143a recharge setup
at Wally World, $27.47. Simple instructions and worked as advertised. Any idiot
can do it, even me (after suitable instruction). IIoz. of freezy kids stuff,
2oz. oil, some kind of leak suppressant and "Maxi Cool" enhancement (snake
oil?). Anyhow the gauge supplied read 35-40 psi at max cool a/c on, in the blue
zone, started out in the green zone ~ 20 psi.
Mr. Bell! Mr. Bell! it works!
Diesel content, now to reassemble the '84 190D a/c system. (groan)

2007-07-05 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, Alles.
25 or more years ago the NAPA guy in Salem MA was the guy to go to for any
quality part, still is!
The NAPA gal in Gloucester is another memory phenom. Have never had a wrong or
bad part from either of them. Before Rusty, anything needed was from NAPA,
tried other stores, not so good to bloody awful.
Brittons in Beverly came close and they did the machine work on my 601 and 602
heads flawlessly. If you have a poor experience at NAPA it must be an
aberration.

[MBZ] 201 IP Leaks

2007-07-08 Thread Frederick Moir

The kid that bought my olde 190D '84 601 eng. 220k+ miles, has found a leak
that seems to emanate from the IP. The "side plate" was missing a screw and the
other 3 were hand tight only. The gasket was some kind of petrified rubber, so
some careful application of red RTV cured that leak, however the bottom plate
appears to leak also. Question, can the bottom plate be removed "in situ" or
must the IP be removed first? It seems that if the fuel lift pump, the fuel
thermostat and possibly the AC Comp. were removed it may be do-able, nicht whar?
This car was run on M1 15w40 after the head rebuild, maybe it removed the crud
that was "sealing" the IP?
TIA

[MBZ] Re 201 IP Leaks

2007-07-08 Thread Frederick Moir
Dr Marshall et al.
I would have loved to get the correct gasket, only available from Bosch etc.,
however said kid had to go to his grandmothers place a hundred or so miles away
and reducing the leak with red RTV was better than running out of oil in
transit. Time will tell.
Thanks for the info.
