Not that any job offer is bad, but these were almost certainly blanket
postings to who knows how many hundreds (thousands?) of groups. I have
seen similar elsewhere, and it comes across to me not much different than
spamming. If it were Nashville based, then it might be more acceptable,
maybe. Are these guys already NLUG group members or just joining to
deploy these messages?

I'm all in favor of using something like "[JOB]" in the subject line so
that those who are not interested in a new job can more easily filter
out job-related messages. If we require that as a condition of
approval, that'll help determine whether or not to approve messages that
are awaiting approval.

A policy like that would probably help identify spammers, but I also
envision a lot of current members forgetting to include the [JOB] tag,
so we'd still need to be a bit tolerant. :-)

Both of the 2 messages in question were awaiting approval to be posted.
So, my assumption is that they were not active members of the NLUG

It's my mistake. I'm the one who approved them in the moderator panel. I
saw that they were jobs and didn't pay too much attention beyond that (they
are IT-related jobs.)

I suppose there probably ought to be a line for the kind of job posting that
we consider appropriate on this list. I'm not sure where that line is. I
lean a little toward the lenient side of posting these kinds of things.

What do you all think? Should we only allow Tennessee-based postings? Only
Linux/Open-Source based postings?

Back in the day, I made it clear to recruiters that they could post
but NLUG expected a commission of 10% or so. At the time
$20-$30K/placement fee was normal. Nobody seemed interested then.
Recruiters are typically moochers who are happy to spray paint their
messages anywhere they think they can get an audience. But ultimately
it's just vandalism.

I agree that there should be some limits, but I don't think we should
limit job postings based on geography or OS. I think we have readers
scattered all over the area, and probably some would be willing to
relocate for the right job. Also, many readers probably make more money
from Windows-based work.

It's probably safe to assume that any job-related messages that show up
in the moderation queue are spam.

Perhaps this is something we should/could sit down and chat about while
hanging out at PhreakNIC? ;-)

I agree with Chris on this one, there are a lot of us unemployed folk
on this list that don't mind the job postings, but I would like for a
way to filter them out. Also, this puts a Rule on job postings if they
put [JOB] in the subject line, that way if they don't follow the job
posting rule, make them do it again... :D Sorta like the Van Halen
clause in their riders... if there is one green M&M in the bowl, they
cancel the show because that tells them someone slipped up somewhere
else..

The issue is that if you allow recruiters to post you'll quickly end
up with the list traffic being majority job postings, many or most
that aren't located in this area. That tends to drive people off the
list and ends up in a death spiral.

The best solution is a separate list called "nlug-jobs" that people
who are in the market could subscribe to. But I would suggest
moderation of the list regardless.

Subject: Another Linux position
To: "cmcquist...@watkins.edu"

Hey Chris. Hope all is going well. I have another position available that
is looking to move ASAP and get someone started right away.

*We are looking for a linux systems admin for a local company. This person
will also have experience with PHP , and MYSQL programming. looking to start
this project as soon as 10.18. There is no interviews with the client. This
person needs to be very competent with MySQL indexing, optimization, table
management, backups, etc. We need someone who can diagnose issues with
everything from Apache logs and configs to network traffic logging. We are
looking for someone with a lot deeper experience with setting
up/managing/optimizing Linux and MySQL. Flash media server and vmware
experience are a plus.*

Looking at a 3mos contracting period for $35-40 an hour – then to be
converted to Perm for $70-85K. I’m already in contact with a few of the
NLUG guys, but if you don’t mind forwarding that to anyone you know who
seems to be a fit, I would greatly appreciate it!

The issue is that if you allow recruiters to post you'll quickly end up
with the list traffic being majority job postings, many or most that
aren't located in this area. That tends to drive people off the list and
ends up in a death spiral.

The best solution is a separate list called "nlug-jobs" that people who
are in the market could subscribe to. But I would suggest moderation of
the list regardless.

So, would this list's moderator just bounce/forward any pending job

Re: [nlug] OBIEE Lead - Columbus, OH - v...@javaji.com

2010-10-15 Thread Chris McQuistion
I'm personally not thrilled with the idea of a separate nlug-jobs list. I'm
not necessarily looking for a job right now, but I don't mind having a job
ad show up in my mailbox occasionally. I often see things show up and
recognize that they might be a good fit for someone I know and I forward
those messages to them. If it were a separate list, people like me (not
actively looking) wouldn't have that input and experience.

I do like the idea of forcing the subject to say [JOB] or something to that
effect.

[nlug] Re: Ubuntu for Server

2010-10-15 Thread Dave Tomlin
Just wondering if I made the right decision to use linux software raid
vs the fakeraid controller on my motherboard. Most forums say you're
better off with software raid. Any thoughts?

Also, do you get a lot of errors in your dmesg log in Ubuntu?

I get an amd64_edac error because my board doesn't support ecc. I get
an iommu error because my board doesn't support that either. I have
an address collision with my first PCI device, and a MMIO error from
shpchp. Fun stuff! :). This is on two new gigabye motherboards.

Re: [nlug] Re: Ubuntu for Server

2010-10-15 Thread Chris McQuistion
I agree that you are almost always better off with Linux software RAID,
compared to onboard "fakeraid". Typically, Linux software RAID outperforms
those fakeraid controllers and you have easy software access to the health
of the array and you an initiate rebuilds, change drives and such fairly
easily with software RAID. The top reason for me, however, is the
portability of Linux software RAID. If you have a motherboard completely
die, you can move a Linux software RAID array to a completely different
machine, with very different hardware. You typically cannot do that with
"fakeraid". This is a very real-world issue that I've run into several
times.
