[NTG-context] Troubles with columnsets and MacTeX 2009
Hi,
I've been having issues with columns and \start(stop)bodymatter statements
since I updated MacTeX to 2009.
Here is a sample of code which works fine on MacTeX 2008 (tlmgr update'ed)
version, and which crashes on MacTeX 2009.
In both cases, the code was compiled using TeXShop in "ConTeXT" mode. This
was tested on another Mac and the results are the same.
Note that if you comment out the \start(stop)bodymatter statements in the
TeX code, it actually compiles, but the text is missing (that is, only the
titles of the sections show up in the PDF!).
In the end:

is fine
# Scenario 3: MacTeX 2009: code won't compile. Error message listed below

OK, but no text in the PDF except for the section titles
I am running Snow Leopard, and I have been using MacTeX for ages, and up to
now, everything was fine with ConTeXT.
I would really appreciate help! I hope the information I included is
sufficient.

[NTG-context] enabling pdftex's microtypographic features with variant old style figures

What You Don't Want To Know: a virtual font is just a regular font but has references to other fonts instead, like char 1 -> font x, char 10 (or dvi commands instead) and then it can has kerning etc within its own set tex itself only sees characters as things with dimensions and a few properties and when typesetting the paragraph uses info from the font with respect to kerning and ligature building now, traditional tex has only tfm files and when virtual fonts were introduced the engine was not adapted at all; so, a virtual font still has a tfm file (with characters etc) however, when the font is being used in the backend, an extra lookup takes place and when a vf file is found, information from that file is used for embedding (in pdftex); of course dvi postprocessors also look at that file so we have: tfm -> tfm used by frontend and backend tfm + vf -> tfm used by frontend, vf used by backend on top of that a map file will point from fontname to real name (pfb) and this is why in a map file you don't see the virtual font names at all, as it's the names inside the vf that matter so say that we have: a.tfm + a.vf but internally a.vf -> font b, c, d (or further chained) then b, c, d need to be resolved to real names as there is no checking going on and as the tfm file has no info about itself being virtual you can imagine that interesting side effects can take place when an old (unknown of) vf lays around ... it will kick in at backend time (this is why the texfont script does a clean up) in luatex we have integrated these mechanisms, so internally a font can have virtual properties (a few more than original tex) however, by default luatex acts like tex, so users won't notice; as luatex has the backend integrated, at some point it will need the vf and mkiv will happily fulfill that request but ... and this is the catch ... in mkiv we use (1) opentype, (2) type 1 and (3) traditional tex fonts (1) is not related to virtual fonts but we can (and do) extend fonts internally using virtual technology (2) in pdftex tfm/vf files are used but mkiv does not look at those files but uses afm files directly (right from the start) (3) the only place in mkiv where tex metric files are still used is in math as we need the additional (math specific) info as it makes no sense to keep supporting the old math fonts while open type variant sare under way, i decided to stick to unicode math and as a result we need to use virtual font technology to make that unicode variant for the lm fonts, this is mostly done and as they have no virtual (vf based) fonts it's transparent for tx/px however, as they use virtual fonts, it gets hairy what file to load; technically there is no obstacle but i've chosen to stay away from the tfm/vf mess and use just the natural tfm variants (i.e. the ones that match the pfb) and therefore we might need a few extra vectors (and maybe font files) in math-vfu that map to the right slots; using the vf's as well would complicate matters and it's not worth the trouble so, what we need to do is to figure out teh few missing files/vectors, add them, and then let users fill in the gaps in vectors are you still there? (in mkiv, such values can be set up via pdfr-def.mkii) The warning is not pointless per se, but special ToUnicode entries are usually not needed at all for latin scripts (AR is smart enough to solve common cases itself). That makes the warning a bit over the top, and so I removed it in luatex to avoid confusing users. [NTG-context] compilation error in mkiv
Trying to compile a text with large sections taken from the html version
of a paper, I got compilation errors. I then compiled paragraph by
paragraph, until the first error occured. When I couldn't spot the
problem, I added word after word, and then character after character.
It worked (example) until:

You may try to run ./update-binaries.sh first and then compile pdftex to start with (it returns warnings, but feel free to ignore them; the binary should nevertheless be there). What do you mean "upgrade" ? Hello, Apparently it means that CentOS uses something like a several-years-span-back-in-time libc library and you cannot do much about it. That's no problem in general since you would not take a suse-compiled firefox and take the binary to your CentOS. You are the first user that has complained so far (most probably because you are the first user to try ConTeXt on CentOS). There are several options: a) (dangerous; I would not do it) install a more recent version of libc on your machine b) we need to set up some virtual machine with an old linux and compile binaries there or find someone else with a reasonably old 64-bit linux server c) you would need to compile the binaries for minimals on regular basis d) since LuaTeX works fine, just stick to MKIV (MKII is highly unsuitable for writing Vietnamese anyway :) :) :) e) Reinhard was trying to convince me to typeset some of his Vietnamese documents in ConTeXt back in May. Those test documents have revealed quite some bugs in font setups in ConTeXt MKII. If Reinhard still neeeds fixed Vietnamese in ConTeXt MKII, we'll gladly give him svn account to commit 64-bit linux binaries for minimals, so that he doesn't get out of "the art of compiling TeX binaries exercise" between the long breaks in TeX Live releases. I suggest you to go for D, at least for a moment. The rest highly depends on you. E is not to be taken too seriously. And it's not just pdftex, apparently. They say that luatex is affected too. That's primarily what I use. So we have both known symptoms (sort of - they're vague) and an allegedly known cause. However, it wasn’t so easy to find the corresponding code in luatex and metapost. Instead of waiting for decisive fixes in these programs, we decided to just release the fixed pdftex and dvips. This should fix the bug for most users. Notice that pdftex is used when typesetting in “pdftex” mode and dvips is used when typesetting in “TeX and DVI” mode. XeTeX does not have the bug. In turn, these routines call Apple’s font routines to construct bitmaps for the outline fonts. These Apple routines store the bitmaps in a font cache to speed up future display. For reasons unknown until recently, this font cache can become corrupt; this is “triggered” by displaying a defective pdf file. After that trigger, display problems persist for all files. To fix the problem, the font cache needs to be rebuilt, as happens when the machine is rebooted. Adobe Acrobat does not use Apple’s pdf display routines, so it is immune to the bug. ... Once you install the repaired pdftex and dvips binaries, pdf files created by these programs will not contain damaged fonts and thus won’t trigger the bug. But unfortunately, your old pdf files may still be damaged. In addition, users on other platforms won’t have the repaired binaries for some time, so pdf files sent by colleagues may still be damaged and trigger the bug. That is why you may still experience the bug from time to time until the TeX world catches up. It isn’t even necessary to display an old damaged pdf file to trigger the bug, because Apple’s QuickLook software and the software in Finder which gives a miniature version of the first page in the file browser can trigger it. It seems that the spec can be met via Ghostscript. What is also needed is the internal labeling of the file as pdf X/1-a:2001, and some xml add-ins. The prepress staff will look at the file and if it is not labeled correctly run it through Distiller, which can degrade text and barcodes by converting them to bitmaps. LSI handles hundreds of pdf cover files each week, many of which are out of spec. If it does not look like X/1-a:2001 they will bitmap it, and in the process mess it up to a degree, or so I am told. So getting the file within spec is necessary but it also has to look like it is in spec. Their Customer Service Rep specifically mentioned Ghostscript as producing non-acceptable pdf files. This is not the only hoop to be leapt through in dealing with LSI. they have a limit on total ink coverage that is more restrictive than the usual formulation for CMYK rich black. They want only %240 total coverage so I cobbled up CMYK 60,40,40,100 which adds up to 240%. In brief, they are a royal pain. But they have a near-monopoly on POD printing for bookstores in the US and their pricing for Amazon beats anyone including Amazon's own subsidy Createspace. The only way I have found to produce such in TeX without a pass through Adobe Acrobat Distiller or the shareware program Pstill is via the package pdfx.sty authored by CV Radhakrishnan and Han The Thanh. This in turn uses some other files such as xmpincl.sty. I wonder if this setup could be incorporated into some flavor of Context? Or even pdftex? Luatex most probably won't work ... and I need to figure out how to modify the building scripts. Apparently 10.6 compiles all the binaries for 64-bit architecture by default despite the fact that it claims to be i386. Luatex building scripts would need to be modified, pdftex doesn't cross-compile at all. [NTG-context] Dash missed in Windows' Times
Hello
In the latest mkiv beta, dash (--) is not replaced by proper symbol if I
use standard Windows' Times New Roman. I get two hyphens instead.
Actually, ConTeXt complains a lot about missed unicode "points". Please,
see log attached.
How to fix it?

No. type-exljbris works fine here.
The only other thing that I can think of is probably something wrong
with the PATH. Try running

The (new) version of context that runs on luatex is called mkiv, the (traditional) version that runs on pdftex as well as xetex is called mkii. There are two shell commands: texexec and context. Both of these can run either mkii (pdftex or xetex) or mkiv (luatex), but they have different defaults: 'texexec' defaults to mkii and 'context' defaults to mkiv. There are not a lot of core differences between mkii and mkiv, but there are a few. The big thing on the user side is that mkiv is totally based on Unicode and UTF-8, and knows how to do OpenType font processing. The closest thing to a short reference is the command index (texshow-web) at contextgarden: http://texshow.contextgarden.net/ However, this is a community effort with a slight lack of actual community. The cont-en[pi].pdf is Hans' context manual, which was originally written in the nineties and is now slightly out of date. The foundry.supelec.fr project (contextref/context-reference) is a community attempt to update that manual. All: Alan comments below on my "aggressive" post. I apologize if it was seen that way. I am serious in my evaluation of ConTeXt, and my questions are quite serious as well. I cannot justify the effort in and cost of converting some 35 documents (many hundreds of pages) into a new format without an evaluation of the format and related tools. So, to restate my questions (potentially less aggressively), and in view of switching our entire technical documentation to ConTeXt: 1. Should I use mkii or mkiv? If mkii, then what should I plan on as schedule for upgrading? 2. Should I use context or texexec? As I understand, this is the same as asking whether to use pdftex or luatex. It may also be related to the mkii/mkiv issue, but I am less sure of that. 3. What *reference* material exists? I do not need a user guide. Right now it has been Google. I asked this question recently and was told that it was
probably pretty safe now to use mkiv, "as the developers
use mkiv themselves".
My experience is that mkiv is not totally stable,
but almost so. I try to use it for my production
as much as possible. For the core of the commands,
the two are interchangable and it is simply a question
of using the "context" script or the "texexec" script
(but don't include a
% output=pdftex
line in your source file!)
For specific differences, you can use
\doifmodeelse{mkiv}{ }{ }
This also answers 2.

2. Why does the page number on the last page not include the

Reading over some past posts I can postulate that the page numbering is
being reset before the last page has been output. But no matter where I
put my "setuppagenumbering" command the first page and last page don't
seem to be affected. Better said, they are affected but not in the way I
would expect... J

[NTG-context] Installing minimals
Hi! On the 16th of September I mentioned that I had problems to install the minimals. Further, on my portable, the one I used during EuroTeX I could not connect to INTERNET anymore even after changing the connection parameters!! I then decide to un-install the firewall program I use (COMODO -- which I disabled when I tried to install the minimals, but with no result) and... everything is now OK: I could reconnect and more important install the minimals. Still a problem using TeXworks: the synctex system is not working: neither adding -synctex=1 in Preferences or \synctex=1 at the start of the tex source. Synctex appeared only in MikTeX 2.7 by a special (?) instruction in the pdftex (?) program. Is synctex taken into account in context? Hi all, I'm running into a problem, but maybe not all hope is lost. For my Greek stuff, I will sometimes need a "dotbelowcomb" accent. Only very few fonts have that, but no problem, in mkiv, I can simply take that from a follback font: \definefontfallback [GreekFallback] [name:texgyretermesregular] [0x0323] [force=no,check=no] Now I would like to remap the exclam character to this dotbelowcom. Again, no problem: with a fea file, I can write a sub rule sub exclam by dotbelowcomb but I can't combine both approaches: if the font doesn't have the character, I get an error about "invalid glyph index." can you add an \unexpanded (as in mkiv) to the mkii definition of
\getbuffer?

Without it compilation breaks here somehow (error with my nested buffers).

Thanks for the hint. uplr8... are Palatino fonts, and I have palatino as the math-font in my typescript. Copying them from the mac to the linux setup (where they have gone? with an update? -- my Mac version is old!) did the trick. [NTG-context] fonts
The fonts (linlibertine and gentium) I installed (and which worked) on
my ubuntu minimals don't work any more. I can't see any difference
between the appropriate files on my mac (where they work) and the linux
machine. Maybe somebody can point out the problem based on the message
below -- I would prefer not to get reacquainted with the font mess (no
time).
I updated the minimals and remade formats. I am using mkII.

[NTG-context] First report on use
Hi!
After discovering some details of ConTeXt during EuroTeX2009
I decided to try it.
First problem, already encountered during EuroTeX: installation.
On both of my machines the installation of the minimals failed.
See attached file.
For example: lines 13-14 rsync error, but at lines 26-30 it
looks like it works, just a moment: after 30-35 I get 36-37
= error again.
On lines 77-80 there is another type of error.
But I installed ConTeXt from a copy of what Mari had on her
portable (this brings other questions, later); so it works
for now.
But still in the error file, looking at lines 97-98 and
99-100, for example, what is the installation program
changing in my mikTeX installation?

Now for the working installation.
1) As it was taken from Mari machine, isn't there possible
problems with parameters from her machine which are not the
same on mine?
2) How can update and/or create new formats?
I am using ConTeXt with TeXworks; I did install a full copy
of TeXworks (programs and dlls) in
C:\Programmes\ConTeXt\texmf-context\context\data\texworks
and I issue the setuptex.bat command before to start the
ConTeXt TeXworks. (You can see that I installed ConTeXt in a
folder without spaces in the name: C:\Programmes\ConTeXt\.)
I am only using Mark IV, following the suggestion of Hans
(for French,...)
So I didn't install Ruby.
OK the next questions will be about documentation, in
another message.
Thanks very much for ConTeXt (and again for EuroTeX2009 - it
was very good).
