A K-x may be appearing in our mailbox soon . . .

2010-04-14 Thread Stan Halpin
Thanks (I guess) for the recent and previous discussions of the K-x. I am about
to buy one for my wife, sight unseen, and am trusting that it will suit her.

Long ago and far away when we first met she was using a Spotmatic. I was using
an ME-Super, convinced her to change so we could share lenses. As I moved
sporadically through a few generations of Pentax SLRs and DSLRs, she gravitated
toward P&S cameras which is a shame because she has a great eye for an image.
My father-in-law passed away two weeks ago. During the last few months, one of
the few things that caught his interest was playing with his Nikon D50 or
looking at the photos Meg took with that camera. The Hassleblad gear went to
Meg's brother, the Leica gear to her sister, and I convinced her to let the
Nikon digital also go to her sister. "If you buy a Pentax, which is a better
camera, you can use some of my lenses." "And it comes in pink!" I think we'll
be ordering a black one soon from B&H. Hopefully it proves to be as suitable to
her hand as the D50 was. The alternative was for me to buy a K-7 and pass a K20
on to her, but from all that you have said, the K-x smaller size will be much
appreciated and may make the difference as to whether she actually uses it to
any degree.

When I first got one on my MZ-S I just thought of it as a fairly obvious
modern-day equivalent of the little cut-out windows on some older bodies
(often used for things like film rating; sometimes for shutter speed).
There's no reason why the LCD display needs to be separate from the dial
when there's only one dial; on the PZ-1p, of course, the single display
serves two thumbwheels.

Something I've been meaning to ask about. Has anyone had the experience of
shooting with an SDM lens, fresh out of the bag from a warm car and into
early morning air chilly enough to produce visible breath fog.
This happened one morning while at the coast DA* 50~135). AF felt as
though it were operating in at least cool molasses. I was attempting to
track some birds in flight and had to pick them up early and try holding
focus awaiting the shutter.
Later in the day, I took it out into the warming sun for a few minutes and
tried it again. This time it seemed to be normally quick in response.
I was relieved, but made me wonder if it's starting to wimp out. K20D
battery appeared to be fully charged.

Any such experiences?

Thanks!

Look for the Sigma APO 400mm f/4.5 Macro, for a much more cost conscious
option. It's a very good lens, though not as good as the FA* 200/2.8 or
F* 300/4.5 ... but those are well nigh legendary lenses I'm comparing it
to. The Sigma has built in, slide out hood and tripod foot, focuses
down to about 3m, and has a limit switch.

The thing I like best about it is the AF/MF switch, though. Lots of
lenses have them, but not all of them really act like it. Like my F*
300/4.5 has an AF/MF switch. However, when I put the Sigma in MF mode,
trap focus works, but not with the F* 300/4.5 in MF mode.

I was lucky enough to get the Sigma 400 for US$500 right after it was
discontinued maybe five years ago. I haven't researched their used
prices. Though I'd love to have the FA 400/5.6 or, better yet, the FA*
400/2.8 (or F*?), I can't justify the cost for the amount I'd use it.

Re: My strange approach to photography

2010-04-14 Thread paul stenquist
For the most part, you'll probably want to shoot the flowers in their
environment. But you may also want to tray holding a piece of black mat board
behind some to eliminate the background. an 11 x 14 piece would be big enough.
If the board is white on one side and black on the other, you can use it as a
reflector as well. That would help in shooting backlit blooms, which can
sometimes be quite beautiful.

My strange approach to photography

2010-04-14 Thread Steven Desjardins
A bit of a ramble.

We leave Saturday for week at Disneyworld. Not a special trip since
we have a Disneyworld timeshare and go down at least once a year,
usually inviting some friends or family members to come with us. My
approach has been to take a minimal kit to force me to try different
things each time. I was going to try the K10D with only the DA40 this
time. It's a fairly comfy package for such a big body. Just realized
today, however, that this is the first time I'm making it down during
the Epcot International Flower &Garden Festival. So my favorite
flower lens, the A50 2,8 macro, definitely gets an invite. The 40
still comes because, you know, I have bigger lens caps.

I'm kind of excited about this, since I do like shooting flower and
this will be acres upon acres of interesting targets. Any suggestions
from the combined wisdom of the PDML?

Re: What's up with the K-x?

2010-04-14 Thread Adam Maas
The excellent processing chain Pentax developed for the K20D and K-7
is simply having a field day with the much cleaner Sony sensor. And
it's just a great little camera for a remarkably low price. There's
nothing else on the market that offers similar performance for
anything less than a couple hundred extra (the Sony A500 is the
closest comparable camera, and last I checked was $250 more).

The K-x is simply a superb camera with very few warts. The only one I
consistently see is that the metering is easily confused if run in
multi-segment mode and underexposes by a consisten 1/2 stop or so in
centre-weighted.

Re: OT - Panasonic 4/3rds video camera

2010-04-14 Thread Adam Maas
This most likely uses the Panasonic multiformat sensor which can shoot
16:9, 3:2 and 4:3 all with the same diagonal and pixel count, or a
dedicated 16:9 variant. Note the 4:3 aspect ratio is not actually a
requirement of the 4/3rds spec (the ~21mm diagonal however is a
requirement).

Re: Ultra-wide zooms

2010-04-14 Thread Adam Maas
LOL, That may have been true 5 years ago, but it simply isn't now.

Current state of the art in lenses wider than 21mm for SLR mounts are
all zooms. There are no APS-C or 35mm format SLR primes which exceed
the performance of zooms like the Nikkor 14-24/2.8, Zeiss ZA 16-35/2.8
or either of the 7-14/4'sfrom Oly/Panasonic at focal lengths wider
than 21mm (And the only reason why 21mm matters is the Zeiss 21mm f2.8
Distagon. which simply dominates the UW prime world for performance).
Current coating technology has greatly reduced the issue of increased
element count (note the Zeiss 21 has an element count which is only
slightly lower than the equivalent zooms) and the increased element
count allows correction of distortion and removal of edge performance
issues which plague even the best older UW primes.

Most basic wide primes at best match the performance of today's
high-end wide zooms, there have been very few new-design wide primes
introduced in the last 20 years while zoom performance has increased
massively and most zooms in this range are new designs form the last
few years.

The real downside for us is that none of the best zoom options are
available in K mount. But a zoom like the DA 12-24/4 or the Sigma
10-20 (in either form) will match or exceed the performance of almost
all the primes in the same range available in K mount (yes, even the
legendary 15/3.5's) on APS-C. Once again, the Zeiss 21 being the
exception (it is available in the ZK line) but on APS-C it's
advantages show a lot less than on 35mm.

I don't think those focal lengths are 35mm-equivalent numbers. I

Pentax no longer sells anything longer than 300, and while I have both
500 and 800 mm mirror lenses, it's going to be quite awhile until I can
contemplate hunting down an A* 400/2.8.

The FA100 is still remarkably good for inside birds.

Right. I knew dragging ass for being slow and hauling ass for hurrying
up so I was kind of guessing along those lines. Thanks for making it
clear nonetheless. One of those drove me to hospital once. The people
accompanying me were freaking out but he refused to be bothered or so

I'm not sure what that means but we have a colloquial term in German
"Popometer" which translates to "buttmeter" (or perhaps
"buttmeasure"). For example, my car has this engine shake in idle when
running on LPG that is not there on 95 Octane. It's there since Subaru

I wonder if "ladder" is the best analogy? A "ladder" implies ascent;
i.e. going UP.

School board politics are the first step of the descent into hell. Need
something slightly more Dante-esque.

Nice set of shots.

The question is not banal - it's a very interesting and important plank in
encouraging more cycling and is a central part of the CTC (UK Cyclists'
Touring Club) policy. However, it's a matter of fact, not a matter of
opinion, so asking people for their opinions about it is rather dumb.

Having just returned from 3 days in Paris I can tell you I am amazed at how
many more bikes there seem to be on the road, even compared to last year.
All done with impeccable style, of course.

Geez, I feel so out of place around here sometimes. There don't seem to
be nearly as many "long glass" shooters on the PDML as there used to be
(I know /you're/ there, John Francis :-) ).

Wonder how much that has to do with the scarcity of long fast glass

I have decided, for now, to take the one offered to me, Liz will let

Re: OT Ouch

2010-04-14 Thread Paul Sorenson
That's because they *are* nothing but minor politicians. Years ago, in
the small town that I grew up in, a local businessman provided the
school buses for our school district. A small business that employed
maybe 1/2 dozen drivers plus himself. He was making a living at the
business but not gouging anybody, either.

A hot-shot young lawyer moved into town and told the school board they
couldn't just hire him year after year without competing bids. The
following year a large bus company with state-wide contracts out bid him
and literally put him out of business. I don't know if he ever
recovered financially from that.

SDM in Cold Weather

2010-04-14 Thread Jack Davis
Something I've been meaning to ask about. Has anyone had the experience of
shooting with an SDM lens, fresh out of the bag from a warm car and into early
morning air chilly enough to produce visible breath fog.
This happened one morning while at the coast DA* 50~135). AF felt as though it
were operating in at least cool molasses. I was attempting to track some birds
in flight and had to pick them up early and try holding focus awaiting the
shutter.
Later in the day, I took it out into the warming sun for a few minutes and
tried it again. This time it seemed to be normally quick in response.
I was relieved, but made me wonder if it's starting to wimp out. K20D battery
appeared to be fully charged.
Any such experiences?

Thanks!

Jack

Re: PESOs: Sledding

2010-04-14 Thread P N Stenquist

Hi Boris,
Thanks for the input.

Both the third and first shots have a somewhat cold light temperature.
A hint of aquamarine. The middle one is a hair warmer. But on a
calibrated monitor, they're all within the range of how snow might be
represented, IMO. I probably should have done a better job matching
them, but they're basically snapshots.

stop in the snow, so even thought I shout at ISO 200, the results are
a bit noisy. But a big fun s well. Paul
