PESO: Pysanka

2014-04-21 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Although I was raised Lutheran, when I was growing up, I spent time
with my father's family at Orthodox celebrations of Christmas and

Pysanki, or Russian Easter eggs.

This image is a professionally decorated Pysanka, but I just may share
one of my own creations if I get the impulse.

Re: STRESSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2014-04-21 Thread Alan C
Locally, until about 10 years ago, geysers were routinely installed in the
roof. Ours go back to 1968 so have copper tanks which totally circumvent the
corrosion problem. They have no geyser trays either! The advent of cheaper
geysers with steel tanks has led to the type of problems under discussion.
Trays are now routinely fitted but very recently I see external, wall
mounted geysers and/or solar geysers. As Mark says, regular replacement of
the sacrificial anode (the frequency depends on the hardness of the water)
should greatly increase the life of a geyser but it is such a schlepp, few
people actually do it & then pay the price. Gas heaters (hot water on
demand) are becoming quite popular too but there is no piped gas here so one
has to be prepared to lug around heavy cylinders.

1) it's somewhat more economical, 2) we never run out of hot water and

Thanks Daniel & Bob for the comments (and to all who looked).

Today was beautiful and tomorrow is supposed to be a carbon copy

and optics to the Bigma for solar work. The focal length is similar
(480mm f/6). So look for another couple of images in this thread

Re: persistant sensor dust

I think Bill is right - if you are seeing these spots in normal usage
and with multiple lenses, it is probably time to wet clean. I used to
use Sensor Swabs and their accompanying fluid on my *ist regularly. It
sometime stook a few tries to get the sensor really clean. I think I
cleaned the K-10D once and have never cleaned a digital camera since -
improved coatings and hypersonic dust removal, I guess.

Looking at another image with a NYPD police car in it, I confirmed
that the car did not have a license plate, but instead there was a
plain metal rectangle bearing the fleet number of the car, i.e.,
"4769-13" and nothing else. That number is also painted on the body
of the car.

So, in New York, police cars do not have license plates!

Flushing helps but I think a lot depends on your water supply, whether
or not you soften the water or do other filtration, and how you use hot
water (long showers that drain the tank completely shorten the life.) I
recently had mine serviced due to a slow leak in the pressure relief
valve and the plumber said to flush that valvue once a year as well as
flushing the tank. Also said to check the sacrificial anode rod every
few years

Another thing to look for is a sacrificial electrode. It'll attract most

I do have a semi-finished basement and can just walk right up to the

One of the great misconceptions of popular music is that 'funk' was invented
in Motown in the 1960s. Today I attended a recital where it was conclusively
demonstrated that on the contrary, it is a development in English music of
the 18th century.

Here is a picture from today's recital by The Commodores (feat. Admiral Sir
Lionel Richy) performing their popular number Heroes:

Man, those boys are mighty white!

That damnable Frenchy Voltaire said that the English thought it good to hang
an Admiral from time to time, to encourage the others. That fellow at the
back is showing that some admirals at least were very well hung indeed.

Nice shot.

Assume it's for a parking control officer to pop out and ticket people?
Lucky you if you have them!

We have a new breed of big brother anti-parking measures here. Some
cities and councils have a adopted a method whereby a van with a CCTV
camera is aimed at parked vehicles at the side of the roads it patrols,
and it simply records vehicle identities through number plate
recognition technology that are parked illegally - on what we call
'double yellow lines' painted by the kerb.

So in the old days, you'd pull over and leave the engine running on
double yellows to use the ATM ten feet away, get your money, and be off
in 30 seconds or less - all the while mindful of a parking attendant.

Now, you've only got to be waiting at a traffic light to turn left
(equivalent right in USA/Canada/etc) and the van can nail you thinking
that you're parked. Not supposed to but that has happened.

Every car park now has number plate recognition cameras at the entrance
and if you overstay your allotted 90 minutes or whatever, the fine comes
through the mail.

Regarding CCTV cameras, I once used to be of the mind that 'if you've
done no wrong, then there's nothing to fear'. But this is getting
ridiculous - I have changed my opinion and now abhor this proliferation
of state-sponsored spying. It is atrocious.

Get thee to a bicycle shoppe.

Hot water heaters always give you about 10-12 years of service - then they
fail.

Next water heater that gets installed, take a sharpie and write "INSTALLED ON

This one caught my interest. The first file is the k-3 and the
2nd is the K-5 IIs. The K-3 is showing more color moire, but it
could also be due to the differences in focusing because the
two shots are clearly not focused on the same spot with field
curvature rearing its ugly head here. I bet there is some moire
in your GXR shots if you look close enough. The GR-D shows lots
of moire in some situations.

Interestingly I had to search out the moire in your image Boris, but it
jumps right out at me in my D.H. Day barn shot of earlier theis year,
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17646479&size=lg one of the first
captures with my K-3. Probably because the roof is so prominent in my image.

Not sure if it bothers me or not.

This one caught my interest. The first file is the k-3 and the 2nd is
the K-5 IIs. The K-3 is showing more color moire, but it could also be
due to the differences in focusing because the two shots are clearly
not focused on the same spot with field curvature rearing its ugly
head here. I bet there is some moire in your GXR shots if you look
close enough. The GR-D shows lots of moire in some situations.

Re: K-3 & moire

2014-04-21 Thread Boris Liberman
Sure, I only wanted to ascertain that I am being understood correctly.
It often happens to me that I am not.

I should admit that I did not see the moire on the PF examples either.
I've seen some artifacts, but I wasn't sure as to what to attribute them.

I have some more moire examples from Ricoh GXR-M that are very clear,
but like I said - 6 images out of several thousands - it is
*practically* a non-issue. In fact, I am thinking that this new K-3
variable moire reduction feature is good, but its usability in real
shooting is extremely marginal. At least this is what follows from my
experience.

Bulent, I use only Lightroom for all my processing, so I couldn't tell.
And as I indicated, this happens so rarely that I look at it as more of
an unusual unexpected surprise as in - look, moire!

I have RawTherapee Portable and I could pass this image through it...
But beside that - I don't have any tools to work with. If you wish - I
could send this RAW file your way and you could play with it. Hopefully,
it would yield something worth sharing on the list.

Re: K10d resale value

2014-04-21 Thread John Sessoms

I do understand that they wanted to encourage new sales, but I still
think it would have been helpful if they'd included backwards
compatibility. Even if the astro-tracing wouldn't work, being able to
add GPS coordinates to EXIF would be useful.

On 4/21/2014 11:30 AM, Darren Addy wrote:

I had the O-GPS1 and it can be a fussy little device. Precise
calibration of the O-GPS1 works (usually) if preceded by the sacrifice

for wide focal length lenses (Milky Way shots) than anything else, and
the actual tracking time is only a fraction of what the camera tells
you is possible. Still, it was enough to get me excited about
Astrophotography and I sold it to fund a more robust solution.

It is an ingenious device, but I understand why they didn't bother to
add support for much earlier cameras. They want to encourage new
sales.

It would be helpful if that GPS thing that uses the sensor shift for
astro-tracing (is that the right word?) had been backwards compatible with
the K10D & K20D.

I think that may be the security patches everyone put in place after the
Heartbleed bug was revealed don't yet play nice together & the link is
timing out when it's loading.

With Firefox I get "Firefox cannot find the server at ..." with a button
to [Try Again]. Sometimes [Try Again] will work & sometimes I have to
hit the "Reload" button up on the menu bar ... more than once.

From Photo.net & Flickr I'm getting a lot of instances where the page
around the image loads, but the image itself doesn't appear until I
reload the page several times.

Other sites I'm seeing the page elements sequentially without formatting
until I reload the page, then everything gets slotted into its proper
places.

Don't get it all the time, but there has been a *LOT* more of it in the
past week, and I don't remember it from before.

Thank you, Tim. It was one of those "walk around the corner and there it
was" shots.

Thanks Attila. I have come to realize little 3 inch flowers make great
large photos.

I thought these photos are great of a kind that would be enjoyed by
the PDMLers.
Here is the gooogle-translated page (it has some captions that make photos

Re: K10d resale value

2014-04-21 Thread Darren Addy
I had the O-GPS1 and it can be a fussy little device. Precise
calibration of the O-GPS1 works (usually) if preceded by the sacrifice
of a chicken although occasionally a goat is required. It works better
for wide focal length lenses (Milky Way shots) than anything else, and
the actual tracking time is only a fraction of what the camera tells
you is possible. Still, it was enough to get me excited about
Astrophotography and I sold it to fund a more robust solution.

It is an ingenious device, but I understand why they didn't bother to
add support for much earlier cameras. They want to encourage new
sales.
