Subject: [Phono-L] Large Oak Cylinder Record Cabinet For Sale

I am selling a large oak cylinder record cabinet for a friend. The cabinet
holds 216 cylinders and all but seven of the numbered pegs are still in the
cabinet. It is 21" wide, 20" deep, and stands 34.5" high and would look very
nice with a Triumph or Opera. The tiger oak is very attractive and I'm happy
to
send photos. The price is $650 and I'm happy to deliver it to the CAPS sale.
Please call 541-990-0781 or email jerry.bl...@yahoo.comThanks, Jerry Blais

I went to the Victor Victrola page and found no such animal. If it is indeed
real, it's something special.

Chinese reproduction ID plate?

> Ok, this one has got me stumped, I have contacted a seller of a crank
victor phonograph with a top lid (I do not have any pictures of it) who is
insisting that it is a VV-3X according to the ID plate. Naturally I can find
nothing about this in LFTD or the Victor Data book. Has anyone ever heard of
this one? It is a real mystery to me. He says it looks like a typical Table
model with a top lid, and has looked at the ID plate 3 times to confirm that

Been meaning to post this for a few days now...

I was recently
spinning some discs on my Victor Orthophonic suitcase model, and it
dawned on me to try something out. I slipped a new needle into the
shank, and I pulled it back out maybe a millimeter or so, just enough
to keep the blunt end from resting against whatever it rests against
before tightening the thumbscrew. I immediately heard a noticeable
difference in volume (maybe 1 to 2 dB), slightly wider frequency
response, and most significantly, an openness (for lack of a better
word) I'd never heard before on any windup phono. It seemed like all
this time, something was slightly constricting the diaphragm, just like
pretty much every windup phono I've ever heard in person, and suddenly
there was a whole new freedom to the sound pouring out of it.

Has anyone else ever tried/noticed this? Mr. Bogantz, is this my
imagination?

Best to all,
Robert

Hi Everyone --
It's fall cleaning time around here, and I've got some phonographs and
advertising material for sale. I'll be going to Wayne and can bring them
along (or otherwise ship them, of course), and I'm happy to send photos.
Here's what I have:
PHONOGRAPHS
1. Vanophone -- Good working order and all parts original (at least as
far as I can tell). This is the version without the speed control slider on
the front. $345.
2. Mikkyphone -- The gasket that holds the reproducer to the tone arm
will need to be replaced, but otherwise in good working order and all parts
original (at least as far as I can tell). This is the more valuable version
with the "Made in Occupied Japan" label on it. The plastic carrying handle
is also there and in perfect condition. $295
3. Baby Jeannette -- This is a child's tin and cast iron phonograph, and
it's in pretty rough shape. The key is not original but everything else
looks to be, including the reproducer and tone arm. I don't know enough to
know whether it works. $95
4. Polly Portable phonograph -- This is the one with the paper
collapsible horn, which is missing. The carrying handle on the case has also
been
replaced. Otherwise everything else is there and original. A good machine
for parts. $85
ADVERTISEMENTS
1. Orthophonic Victrolas Electrolas and Radiola Combinations -- A
sixteen-page catalog featuring all the new models from Victor, dated 1925.
It's
in really good condition with a protective sleeve. $50
2. A two-sided advertisement for a Victrola No. 4 Sound Box --
Multi-colored flyer with a drawing of the sound box on one side and an
illustration
and description of the change in the horn and tone chamber made in Victor
phonographs in August 1925. $15
If you're interested in any of these, please contact me off-list.
Thanks!

Hey folks, looking for some help. I have an opportunity to acquire a
Columbia BNW. What's the going rate for one of these for a fair offer?
Pictures are up on my website at

http://www.majesticrecord.com/columbiabnw.htm.

This would be my first outside horn disc machine. So am out of touch on
values. I'm also figuring it's a BNW based on Columbia Phonograph
Companion by Robert Baumbach. Corrections welcome.

Thanks for your help.

The poor London model of Edison's Diamond Disc machine looks like it had
been tortured. The vertical section was there afterall, but a cable, wood
block and some other things (part going into the horn) were missing. Someone
had SOLDERED the horn on the top to another piece (sloppy shiney solder), I
guess to keep it from dragging...poor soul of a machine. My impression is
that without ALL the parts, there would be stress on both the record
grooves and the diamond reproducer, which would be forced to take on the
burden
of moving the heavy pieces across the record...at least that's the way it
seems to me.

Needless to say, the machine still sits with the seller...who is now a bit
wiser, since I shared the photo and what I knew with her. She seemed not
at all disappointed and actually fascinated to learn something about the poor
 mess.

As for its WEIGHT. I've got an "AH-HAH!" I took the flashlight and checked
out the left side where the 24 slots for records was. I could see that 2,
that's TWO, thick metal weights were in place behind the slots. They went
across the back, one high, one low. This was probably to balance the weight
of the phono in the right-sided compartment. BOTH sides were equally heavy,
and I mean heavy! I could not lift one corner. Wow, was all I could say.

But again. This was a fun adventure and learning experience which didn't
cost many bucks. It would not have been either without the help of this
great group. :)

I will, however, now keep an eye out for an Edison (table model) which
could play my records! And I think I know a little bit about how these
machines work...not a lot, but enough probably to just get into more trouble.
LOL
Oh, and I will wash the records with denatured alcohol before I put them
away.

One last question on STORAGE: Store records flat, right?
But what do you put between them, and is a paper box OK ?

Thank you all,

Hello everyone on Phono-L:

I am a new subscriber to Phono-L and would like to introduce myself. I live in
Vermont and am primarily a collector of records (1920s hot dance & jazz, as
well
as film soundtrack and early radio discs) but I have a few machines and love
listening to them.

Victor Credenza story: I always took with a grain of salt any story I heard
about how wonderful it was to listen to early electrical records on a Victor
Credenza preferring to use my nice Numark turntable, a truncated 2.5 mil
stylus,
my Souvenir noise reduction unit, and nice, quiet amp. I was quite vocal about
this too whenever the subject of playing records and cylinders on original
equipment came up for discussion. But then I heard a scroll Victor "Gems from
Rio Rita" played on a friend's Credenza , one that had been properly restored ,
and I couldn't believe the warmth and depth of the sound. I bought one and
restored it and while I wouldn't play my best store stock records on it, I do
have several crates of late '20s scroll Victors that listen to on the big
machine.

That leads me to a request. I have acquired a second full-sized Credenza that
is without its backboard and wonder if anyone on the list might have one
available so I can complete its restoration. If you do, please contact me
privately at

Best regards to everyone and Happy New Year.

Hi All,
I hate to tell all of you this but there is no magic bullet. I have been in
the art business for 35 years and have used FedX , UPS and others and the
fact is that you gotta build a box that will take just about any form of
bad
treatment. One of my nephews grew up working 1st for FedX -4 years and
UPS-6
years and now works for a speciality shipper and freight company that deals
in special shipment of special goods. The stories he told of both companies
made my head hurt and no matter what shipper I use I build a box that will
make it almost anywhere and my last item still did not get there. They
drive
a fork lift arm right through it and I used 3/4 plywood for sides. 3 months
later the customer got a ck for $15000.00. But they did EVERYTHING they
could to keep from paying the claim. Photos showing how the crate was put
together shamed them and a bit of advice from my nephew to stay on them at
least twice a week really worked.

For our phono's small units well packed under normal conditions should get
there. Larger units, either know someone who can get it back to you- or pay
the very high price of craters and freighters. On more expensive machines
it
is OK but on standard ones the freight charge can make it really to
expensive to purchase a machine like a c-250. I am working through that on
a
machine now.

But bottom line on a common carrier youse pays your money and takes your
chances

Subject: [Phono-L] Identify phonograph drawing

A few months back I had mentioned on this list that I bought a Crescent
phonograph. Besides a phonograph manufacturer they were a vertical cut record
brand. Their phonographs were equipped to play both vertical and lateral.
Talking with the granddaughter of the original owner she was fairly sure the
machine was purchased in Rhode Island.

Just recently said contacted me back to say she found a couple more records (no
Crescents unfortunately) but there was a sleeve which I asked her to send me.
I
have posted the sleeve here with a separate picture of the phonograph:

www.majesticrecord.com/traverssleeve.htm

This likely confirms that they did buy it in Pawtucket as the woman had
originally guessed. The record prices on it are pretty interesting as well
as citing 8 inch double sided records. I wonder if these were Crescents, or
Operaphones. What I'm interested in knowing is whether the drawing of a
phonograph is identifiable as a real phonograph. It shows a reproducer set up
to play vertical records. Can anyone identify it?

Thanks,
Glenn

I saw this at the Claymont, DE phono show back in 2003 and took pictures.
The dealer, can't remember who, wanted several thousand dollars for it. It
didn't sell. I think it was the only thing this particular dealer brought.

Hello, everyone.
I was chatting with Ken Woodbury today about the one-month-away Wayne
show. I mentioned the upcoming anniversary of Ken's heart attack at a prior
April show and he led me to this link which provides some insight into what
happened to him that fateful day. He was technically dead on the floor at
the PAL and was brought back to happier times and a normal life, all
through the experimental new "cool technology" described in this article. I
thought some of you would enjoy reading it, as I did.

Subject: [Phono-L] Vitaphone Tone Arm

I am in the process of downsizing and am selling off miscellaneous
phonograph items. I have a complete tone arm and diaphragm for a Vitaphone
phonograph. I know this design was manufactured and sold in Canada from 1913
to
1916. It is unusual in that the tone arm did not contain the diaphragm. It
was mounted in a stand at the rear of the arm. The arm is made of wood and it
vibrated. The vibrations were transferred to the diaphragm which is
mounted at the rear of the arm. My arm is similar to those shown at
http://www.keithwright.ca/CAPP/Vitaphone/vitaphone.html According to this web
sight the
tone arm was capable of playing both lateral and vertical cut records. I
can supply pictures of my parts to anyone that is seriously interested in
it. I don't have an idea of the value of this piece so I will sell it to the
highest offer I receive. If you are interested, email me at
rvu...@comcast.net and I will provide detailed pictures of my part.

Hi everyone, and a very nice Sunday to you all.
I went to our Golden State Phonograph Society (California MAPS Chapter) club
meeting at Ron Dethlefson's house yesterday, and as we usually offer things for
sale, I took my Triumph model B with 2/4 conversion, model H reproducer and
repro 14" horn and my Fireside A with orig Fireside horn in very nice
condition.
I had only taken the Fireside because a friend was going to bring me a Fireside
crane so I could hang the horn. I took the Triumph on a whim. So what happened
is that I ended up choosing between them. I sold the Triumph and kept the
Fireside. The Triumph takes a huge bite out of my room with the MG horn, and I
don't like it with the 14" horn. The Fireside looks great with a very nice
original red horn I got recently. Lots of paint on the horn. And the machine
plays great. So although the Triumph is a nice heavy duty machine, very nice
condition, 2/4, I still preferred the Fireside. Now for the question -
Have you ever made a choice between a more valuable and rarer machine and a
less
valuable and more common machine? and if so, which one did you keep?

Opera or Fireside? Let me think about it. ;-)

But seriously, yes.for my first cylinder machine, 28 years ago, I picked an
Edison Standard A over a 4 clip Standard. It was pointed out to me that the
particular 4 clip was a much quieter machine, not to mention probably more
valuable as it was older than the Standard A. They were both the same price.

As I said, I picked the Standard A because it had the nice, large Edison banner.

BTWmy wife bought this for me as a wedding present 28 years ago.

Bremerton Navy yard. I still have that machine. I really didn't care if I had
a
Triumph or not I couldn't afford one. A few years down the road, I got a
Triumph Model D with the oak Cygnet horn and reproducer really cheap. I like
the Cygnet horn because it doesn't take up a lot of room like a Triumph
morning glory horn will take. That about the closest I'll have to an Opera.
Maybe I'll get lucky and stumble into an Opera.

Unless one knows the weight of the packed shipment, a buyer can't really
tell if the shipper is off the mark with his shipping costs, and I believe
he Marek in Canada, right? Shipping from Canada is always more expensive
in
my experience. If you want an inflated price for shipping try the $10 I
was
charged to ship 0.1 pounds (less than two ounces) of repro car parts from
PA
to MA. They use UPS. The post office would have cost under $2.00 I'll
bet.

Greetings,

Photo's of
the Wayne Show can be found on the WIMAPS website at
www.wimaps.org

The show was well attended and sales were brisk. A rainy day detoured
sales in the parking lot on Saturday. The show is growing and the
attendance was excellent.

The Stanton auction was incredible with awesome
phonographs for sale.
Buyers were ready to stimulate the economy and
prices for rare items set
some record prices. Highlights were:

Eldridge Johnson Model C phonograph: $3500.00
Very rare Salter mahogany
double bow front record cabinet: $6700.00
Rare lever-wind ratchet

Unless one knows the weight of the packed shipment, a buyer can't really
tell if the shipper is off the mark with his shipping costs, and I believe
he Marek in Canada, right? Shipping from Canada is always more expensive
in
my experience. If you want an inflated price for shipping try the $10 I
was
charged to ship 0.1 pounds (less than two ounces) of repro car parts from
PA
to MA. They use UPS. The post office would have cost under $2.00 I'll
bet.

mirek had told me he was selling out and if you look at an old catalog he
raised his prices considerably
when jerry madsen sold out he was not greedy and sold at fair prices
mirek did make good quality items and i have bought from him in the past
its just his attitude now and how to screw the customer since he wont need
us anymore
i have said my feeling on it and wish anyone else better luck dealing with

I have purchased several parts from Mirek and have always been very
satisfied with both the quality and the cost which is only a fraction
of what an original part would cost - assuming you could find one.
As far as shipping goes, it is expensive to ship out of the country.
Shipping a 4 pound 1 ounce package from the US to Canada costs a
minimum of $27.00 via USPS and it doesn't take much to weigh 4
pounds. I certainly hope that suppliers like Mirek continue their
valuable contribution to our hobby.

As expected, the recent Stanton's auction was an exciting experience.
There were many high end machines there that brought a wide variety of
bidding excitement. The Edison Idelia was very impressive but brought
only
$20K when the presale expectations were much higher. The Edison Class M in
the upright cabinet only went for a little over $10K. Music boxes were a
bit soft on prices. The very nice Reginaphone went for around $4K. Many
of
the front mount Victors were in the $1,200 to a high of around $2,500 for
the MS. If anyone has a chance to take in an auction at Stanton's, I would
highly recommend it.

I ended up with three more Victors for my collection along with a nice
record cabinet, Edison Standard, Babson Brothers flowered cylinder horn,
and
many small items. One of the Victors was a Rigid Arm R. The arm has been
resoldered where it attaches to the piece in the back bracket and the
finish
has been buffed off almost completely. The anodizing on the back bracket
is
weak but visible. My question is, Does anyone know anyone that restores
the
anodized finish on parts? Is it hard to do yourself? Thanks in advance

any advice.

Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Edison Brass Mandrels... some idle thoughts...

Greetings Harvey:

The solid brass mandrels were on the early M and E electric machines. They
were press fit onto the steel mandrel shaft. Even in those days solid
brass
of that diameter was expensive so few are found to be solid after 1896.
As
the M topworks was adapted for the Springmotor machines the brass mandrel
became a hollow cylinder with brass ends pressed in. It was a thick wall
brass which still carried some weight. The smaller diameter end was
indented
to allow for the needle bearing guard on the endgate. In 1901 the nickel
plated thin walled drawn brass mandrel allowed for a drastic reduction in
brass
costs and reduced the number of machining operations. The indented end
continued for the M and E but the new Triumph line did not require it.
For the
rest of the Triumph production the drawn brass mandrel continued to serve
well.

The Home phonograph had the thick walled hollow brass mandrel with end
pieces almost from the earliest machines. Only the very lowest serial
numbers
are occasionally found with a solid mandrel and the indented end. The
Home
had that thick walled brass mandrel for a long time but wall thickness was
reduced as nickel plating was added. The drawn thin brass mandrel was
introduced before the 1901 new style cabinet change. The length of the
mandrel
shaft remained the same until the Model B was introduced.

SADLY, there are sellers who swap out the brass mandrel for a later thin
walled nickeled mandrel. They then charge more for the brass mandrel than
they paid for the whole phonograph. So, you can find a Home with a serial
number below 9000 with a shiny nickeled mandrel that should not be there.
 And
further along there will be an eBay listing for the original brass mandrel
for a higher price than the mutt machine. Gr ! ! !

I hope that helps. I am away from my research materials so I only
guarantee the above to be 50% correct...

Al

 HI ALL
I KNOW EDISON PUT THE SERIAL NUMBER UNDER THE IDELIA NAME PLATE
GLAD TO KNOW ITS UNDER ALL

Each Edison reproducer has its own serial number. The B D CHK and the small
tops shared serial numbers, the R and S shared serial numbers, the O and N
shared serial numbers. The N-56 can be found with both R&S and O&N serial
numbers. The DD reproducers all have serial numbers, they started out with
just
numbers and ran through F.

I saw a home on eBay with the serial number drilled off, I wonder if they knew
the serial number is also under the ID plate?

Edison DD reproducers have letters before the serial numbers some are codes:

On the regular reproducer Edison started out with numbers and worked his way up
and then started over with A and he got clear up to the letter F. On the
regular DD you will note numbers & A to F on the standard DD reproducer. With
the DD reproducers the letter designations appear to have been changed when he
made changes or improvements to the reproducers. Except for in the A series
when the when the dome of the cup was made thicker resulting in about a 2 oz.
weight increase and the elimination of the inner sleeve these changes are not
readily noticeable visually, but the later ones have better sound.

NS after the serial number is an Edisonic 7960 NS is an example of this.
NS after the serial number beginning with letter is a Converted Edisonic F88690
NS is an example of this. You could trade in a regular reproducer with $6.75
and
save $12.75 on an Edisonic that normally cost $19.50; Edison then modified the
head with a larger limit loop and installed the heavy weight and thicker
diaphragm on it. The standard diaphragm varies between .009 and .011; the
Edisonic is more consistent around .0125. The cheap yellow notebook paper is
.003, common white paper is .005.

LG is long play LonG
EM is one with Duncan stop Electric Model
LD is the Dance Loud Dance
NS stands for New Standard.

Each phonograph and reproducer had a serial number, when the model O came out
it
was two days wages and Edison was serious about keeping track and control of
his
products mainly to protect his patents.

With regards to DD serial numbers, 947, a copper oxidized is the earliest
serial
number I have seen, F80885 in the gun metal or antique finish is the latest and
it was converted to an Edisonic so the serial number is F80885 NS. I have seen
three Dance reproducers that were converted to the New Standard they have
serial
numbers like LD 9838 NS, LD 9476 NS, and did not have the small spring or the
cross bar it was connected to above the reproducer’s cup. I have seen two with
the Duncan stop that have been converted with serial numbers like EM 8497 NS.

> Do you have the Serial numbers or some other identifying marks on those items
that were stolen. So if they show up on Craigslist or Ebay, we can trap those
the sleazy Crooks that made off with the Reproducers ??

interesting
i have an idelia but my concert/opera is my work horse
it has the best sound of all when i play some of the hot 5000 clylinders
if we were talking a chipendale chair i would be more concerned with
restoration but most of these phonographs were mass produced for consumption
and
have a lot of wear
i do not like the super gloss look but many restorations can closely
approximate what left the factory and if you are honest when you sell it it
should not matter
just a few thoughts

Ron said it very well. I would favor a mint machine over a restored one
but I would not discriminate over a restored machine as that is the only way
most people can own a mint looking machine. I would also love to have a
1795 silver dollar in uncirculated condition, but I had to settle for one
with a hole that was filled in that was in average condition.

I recently got a gold Exhibition in the deluxe hinged box, the mildew
smell was horrible. I sprayed the inside with Lysol and I will have to treat
it once more to get rid of the smell. Some people would likely be upset I
got rid of the original mildew, but if you cannot enjoy what you have why
collect? I cringe when someone cleans $20,000 of the value of an Idelia by
polishing the copper oxidation off, but some people cringe when you restore
an all brass horn to original look.

Most people would prefer mint machines, but the reality is if you want to
enjoy a machine that looks perfect it will most likely be restored. The
only two machines that I have that are excellent is my VV-IV and my VV-VI
that came in an aftermarked console which protected it.

My Triumph E is one I had restored. Someone varnished over the whole
thing and ruined the case, made the pin striping run, and the machine was in
excellent shape until someone ruined it.

I had the bedplate refinished, now it looks better than new. I enjoy the
machine because it looks so nice, when I want to play records I go to my
crappy looking A in a B case Triumph. I have seen people with machines that
look new, unfortunately there are not enought to go around.

One year a radio collector brought a Triumph A with a wooden horn and an
iron and brass O to show it to people. The finish was so alligatored it
acutally felt like the reptile when you touched it. The O was rusty and when
I told the guy it would restore nicely he was horrified and told me he did
not buy it to listen to or restore, he liked to keep things just as he
found them.

Steve

> I agree with Steve. It depends on condition and the machine itself. It
can be subjective and dependent on the collector or individual as well. Do
you want a common but pristine original Vic -IV, for example, or would you
rather have a refurbished and refinished Edison Opera brought back to
showroom beauty? Also rarity might be a consideration. Would someone wait
for a near original Edison Idealia or take one that was redone? It
depends...cost, rarity, the collector themselves are only a few of the
considerations.
> I think most of us would take the rarest machine in the most original
condition at the lowest cost (speaking in general terms). Cost, especially
in todays economy may be a key determiner in the utlimate decision made.

I actually don't know the Pittsburgh Phonograph Pirate's name. Whenever I have

don't know what I am talking about. Luckily he has never had anything I need
for my collection.
When I started collecting in the early 1960's there were more crooks around.
Today we are far more educated thanks to MAPS, CAPS, Phono-L, etc., and that
makes it much more difficult to con us.

While you all are talking about the bronze, oxidized Victor R...it brings

My first front mount was a Victor P that I purchased in 1973. I really
knew nothing about phonographs back then. I DID have sense enough to know
that the Thorens reproducer was "most likely" a replacement part. Of course
I later got a long necked Exhibition from Neuman Miller.

As for the hardware, the horn support and motor bedplate was a dull or
dirty grey/silver. It looked like spray paint. I left it as it was. Some
years later...maybe in the 1980's I learned that the Victor P's (and R's) had
the oxidized bronze, tiger finish. I tried a little paint remover and
WALLA! I had a tiger striped, bronze oxidized Victor P after all!

A belated, but sincere Happy New Year to all,

If I could verify that the motor board is on a swivel then I would place a

board lined with a felt strip on it across the BACK of the motor board and

give a few swift blows with the mallet to see if I can loosen it. Perhaps

someone who owns an XVII can verify that the motor board swivels on a pivot

just to the rear of its center so I don't do any damage.

And then, when I found one, I had to pay whatever the person wanted because
you just never found them. Then along comes eBay - and now it's no harder
than doing a search and sniping one at a great price and discovering that no
one in America ever threw them away. That's the market of supply and
demand, as well as a new generation of people who inherited a collection from
their dad or grandfather and would rather have a new loud muffler on their
Japanese car or a stereo to blow the body panels off...

What is the purpose of continuing to beat this seller's description?
While we agree that it is highly unlikely the paint was applied at the
factory, the paint is good enough that a seller without vast phonograph
experience could easily think it looks as old as the machine, and therefore
as far as he knows was applied at the factory. It looks like this seller
sells lots of purses and boots, and is probably much more knowledgeable
about those items than the average phonograph expert. If I had a purse to
sell on eBay I could easily make wrong assumptions about it that the purse
experts would laugh at too.

And, whether painted at the factory or not, it looks very nice. If I owned
it, I'd keep it and display it alongside my factory-correct Gems.

Do you have a pic of your "new" Pathe?

On the subject of Pathe - does anyone have any idea of what a Pathe advertising

plaster rooster might be worth? I found one recently, but haven't been able to

convince the owner to part with it... It is a display in an old store and no

one knows what it is, since it's painted black.

received a Pathephone 40 yesterday through the kindness of a Phono-L member who

responded to my search for one. The reproducer label was aged and blackened,
and

since it is paper you can't clean it without risking loss of the image. I found

a decent picture of a reproducer online, and..well, the story is written on the

before and after image at this link:

I didn't notice either and I thought the whole issue looked great. Very slick.
Congrats!

Hi Tim,

I have done a lot of graphics work myself, as I majored in advertising and have
always enjoyed designing my own business brochures, webpages, cards, etc. Those
images did not appear as a "misprint" to me, in fact I didn't notice the bleed
while perusing this issue, until you just pointed it out. So, in my opinion
(for
what it's worth) they look fine and I think they wouldn't look "as good" with a
symmetric space on top. It's kind of like framing a piece of art with mat
board,
the border at the bottom is always larger and not symmetrical for eye appeal.
Just my 2 cents...
