[SlimDevices: Plugins] Itunes Update
I've recently had to move computers and I can't get itunes update working on the new one. Basically everything is the same as the old computer in terms of Perl version, file location etc, so it tries to run, but I get this message c:\itunesupdate>itunesupdate.pl "c:\itunesupdate\itunes_hist.txt" usage: TrackStatiTunesUpdate.pl [loop seconds] I've also tried c:\itunesupdate>TrackStatiTunesUpdate.pl "c:\itunesupdate\itunes_hist.txt" usage: TrackStatiTunesUpdate.pl [loop seconds] On the off chance that there is still one user of this plugin - does anyone have any idea how to get this going again? Running iTunes Update v1.9.1 agaisnt SlimServer 6.5.0 (compiled binary) and iTunes 7 on Windows XP. When I import my history I get this error: Code: iTunesUpdateWin.pl iTunes_Hist.txt Undefined subroutine &main::strftime called at C:\Program Files\SlimServer\serve l line 127, line 1. Any ideas? Itunes update has been great for me years, but periodically won't count a song as played. I use an itunes playlist wherein the songs are unplayed, but gradually has built up songs that actually have been played. Logs tell me can't find that song in itunes, but the playlist is from itunes. The first track has accented characters so I'm not really surprised it wasn't found. But the 2nd looks pretty simple - what happens if you type "The Beach Boys Made In U.S.A. Surfin' USA" Into the search box in iTunes itself? That's essentially what the plugin does to find the tracks... James, Thanks. Your plugin makes squeezebox work for me. When I put in the whole string "The Beach Boys Made In U.S.A. Surfin' USA" into iTunes search, I get nothing. All the other songs from that same album behave the same way, ie do not show as played after playing. Do I need to change the tags on them? As I said above, all the songs are from an iTunes generated playlist and most stuff imported with iTunes(including this one via v4.1). That does imply some sort of discrepancy between the MP3 tags that SlimServer is reading and the meta-data that iTunes is using. Do you see anything obviously wrong when you look the Get Info screens in iTunes? Maybe different types of apostrophe? Simong - Did you ever get iTunesupdate running? I'm on Mac 10.6 and SBS 7.5.4 and can't get Glue to install either. I can't figure out why it won't take on this album or the several others. The ' looks normal. I ran the track thru TuneUp which is supposed to fix identity of tracks and still doesn't work. I actually had a problem track myself at the weekend so maybe this might be relevant; I had a track with no album set in iTunes, but the mp3 itself contained ID3v1.1 tags which had an album name. The album was then showing up in SlimServer and breaking the plugin's search of iTunes. To fix the problem I had to force iTunes to overwrite the v1.1 tags - changing any other version had no effect! I got it working.by getting an Apple TV and ditching the squeezebox. No more trying to get my system working, I'm actually spending time listening to music the way I want too! $99 and I already have an iPad so I can control iTunes remotely and send it to the ATV. I have a system that does what I want in about 0.01% of the time I've spent trying to get squeezewhatever to work. Anyone know how the SC to iTunes update work, i.e. the other way round where the iTunes Library is updated with playcount, last played and ratings from SC? os x 10.3 ss 6.51 itunes update is no longer working, with an update to 6.5.1! It continually says "nothing being timed", even when, in fact, music is playing. Help! I worked out that 'make' was on the Mac OS disc and so installed the developers tools through Xcode. If it is of any help, iTunes Update is still working fine for me with iTunes 8 on Mac OS X 10.5.4 and SC 7.2. iTunes 8 seems to have changed the interface, a lot of the preference settings and introduced some new library files. It seems like with every upgrade of SC, the plugins need to be installed over again. Hi there - well having eventually got iTunes to work with Slimserver (amazing what a difference turning on the 'use itunes' option makes!!!) I can't get iTunes update to work at all - have installed as instructed and Slimserver sees the plug-in - have left default as 'direct update'. But when I play iTunes tracks I get a very, very long pause between them (if itunes isn't loaded - a quick burst of Slimserver browser progress bar if iTunes is loaded) and then nothing. Eventually the next track plays but no change to the 'last played' or 'play count' fields in iTunes? Any clues anyone - might look at the log but not the faintest idea where it is located? James, thanks much! I have a Qnap NAS running linux with SC7 on it. I have iTunes running on a different Mac computer. The iTunes library xml file is located on a share which is imported on the NAS so that SC can import ratings and playlist from the iTunes xml file. Now, I would like to have the otherway roud synchronisation where changes made on SC are propagated to iTunes. Is it possible to extend your plugin so that it calls AppleScript on the remote Mac running iTunes (even connected through simple telnet and not necessary ssh). Would be a very nice feature and I think that this would be interesting to other people as well, especially in times where SC runs more and more on NAS hardware, i.e. not on the same computer like iTunes. Hi Simon, Most likely it's not working because of your 'multi-disc set' options. I can't remember exactly what the option is called but you need to turn off the one that appends "(Disc 2 of 2)" to the end of the album name. Because the album doesn't have the same name in SlimServer and iTunes they can't be matched. I guess I could actually work around this, but that's the situation at the moment! I had the same problem as i stored my collection on a NAS server, that coded filenames using UTF-8 . The only solution i found was to transfer these files with a ftp client (Filezilla) forcing UTF-8 during connection to the NAS. The files transferred this way could be correctly analysez by the SqueezeServer (although i couldn't read their names anymore using win explorer). Hmmm. Your log indicates that the iTunes search returns the correct tracks, but the plugin isn't matching, because the accented characters aren't the same. Does 'Rós' actually appear like that (4 characters rather than 3) or has the forum changed it? I recently got an email from another Mac user relating to Sigur Ros but in their case the accents are displayed correctly in the log, but the tracks don't get found in iTunes at all... Those warnings shouldn't stop the plugin from working. (Although I am sure I have fixed them already) Slow startup time may indicate a problem opening iTunes from the plugin. Thanks James iTunes isnt running on the Atom server - I just have a copy of the Library.xml being referenced. None of the options are 'set' within iTunes Update. I just copy over the iTunes_Hist file over from the server and run the update on my main machine every week or so and then export the Library.xml again. Hello I'm using LMS 7.7.1, Itunes Update 2.8.3, and Itunes 10.6.1.7. It seems to be working okay except the timestamp (in Itunes) for when a song is played is off by -6 hours. As a note, my local time zone (MST) is -6 hours behind GMT, and I'm wondering if that isn't a coincidence. I recently listened to a song at 1:20 in the morning. I'm having a similar but worse problem - for some reason, also with Sigur Ros, I am losing the files. Used to have 'em, but they're gone now. The latest two have persevered, but the older ones (including () and the Aegatis Byrgin one) are just gone. Also special character related: Yael Naim, same issue - lost the first song I had when I added the second. When I say lost: the files are no longer in the music folder. that's nothing to do with iTunesUpdate. Have you checked where iTunes actually thinks the files are? In Windows you can choose 'show in explorer' from the track's context menu. I'm running iTunes Update v1.4 against SlimServer v6.1.2 with iTunes v5.0.1.4 all on Windows XP. iTunes Update is running is "indirect" mode where I manually import updates using the perl script. When I import my iTunes_Hist.txt file the "last played" times and play counts in itunes get updated correctly. However, if I have set a song rating this does not get updated. Below is a snippet from the import process showing one track with a rating set and one without. In both cases the rating in iTunes is unset. Anybody seen this behaviour or got any ideas? The attached patched (hacked) edition of iTunes Update v.1.7.1 (I've called it v1.7.1a) allows for the setting of half stars via the SB remote. By default the behaviour is the same as the vanilla v1.7.1 plugin where you hold down the buttons 0 though 5 whilst on the "Now Playing" screen to set a rating of 0 to 5 stars. But, if you go into "Server Settings | Plugins" and switch on "Allow Half Stars" (you will need to restart SlimServer afterwards) then the behaviour changes... You now hold down buttons 0 though 9 & ADD (+) to set a rating from 0 to 5 stars in half star increments. So button 1 = half a star, button 2 = one star, button 3 = one and a half stars etc. The ADD button corresponds to five stars (I chose this button relatively arbitrarily). iTunes can currently display the half star values but some other parts of the interface are still catching up - for example you cannot use half stars in iTunes Smart Playlists. Hopefully Apple will change this eventually. To install the patched version you should get the vanilla v1.7.1 plugin working and then simply replace the plugin.pm file in your server\plugins\itunesupdate folder with the attached file. This has been minimally tested. I am not a Perl expert and I have some big questions about what I've done in some parts of the code. I would be glad to see this code merged back into James' plugin f he thinks it is worthy. I tried running the alpha of SlimServer 7 with James's iTunes Update plugin and it seem the behaviour has changed. When holding down a key for a rating the SqueezeBox displays the message "Favourite #3 not defined" rather than setting the iTunes rating. James, There seems to be something wrong with iTunes update and the newest iTunes. The last two days I've gotten an error message along the lines of "Server Error: Method - Get Version Number". I'm sorry I didn't copy it down. I'll do so next time and post it here. Also, my iTunes is throwing some kind of failure as well. I could have sworn that it worked at least once or twice but I could be mistaken. Timbo, iTunes does have to be running but it should stay open the whole time, it doesn't need to be closed and reloaded. Are you running SlimServer as a service? Same deal here. I think it has to do with the ItunesUpdate.pl using some form of GMT instead of localtime, but I'm not sure where this should be changed in the script. I recently purchased an iMac and have successfully set up Squeezecenter to run as it did on my PC, except that I cannot make iTunes Update work. (I have used the extension downloader to add Trackstat, Custom Scan, iTunes Update, etc.) I have read James Craig's instructions, which explain the need to install Mac::Applescript::Glue Unfortunately, my Mac did not come with the OSX DVD, so I cannot install 'Developer Tools' and hence cannot install Perl modules Mac::Applescript:Glue I am a complete beginner when it comes to Macs. The delay is almost certainly caused by the plugin being unable to find iTunes itself - not the track! Have you recently upgraded either iTunes or SlimServer? I've noticed that the SlimServer installer resets the 'run at login' setting back to 'run on startup' which is not what's required for the plugin. Sometimes an upgrade to iTunes doesn't register the correct COM hooks for the plugin either. This is usually fixed by an iTunes re-install. Problem is, my TrackStat database is now out of synch with my iTunes database, I've rated loads of tracks which haven't been rated in iTunes. I'm having the same problem. My configuration is that I'm running SlimServer on a SUSE Linux machine. Because of this, I'm using the method of running the Perl script on the Windows machine periodically to update iTunes. I don't have the output to post, but in the output of the script running on Windows, it shows the cadidates for the songs it found in the iTunes database. The song that was played is listed as one of the canidates, yet it fails to match. Looking at the output, I can't see why it wouldn't match. It then concludes that the song wasn't found and no update is performed. On my SUSE box, the iTunes_Update.txt file is created in a Samba share which I access directly on my Windows machine that has iTunes. Any ideas? I don't know why this won't work. I'm using a version of the plugin that I downloaded last week. For what it's worth, I figured out my problem. The plugin uses the full path name to do the match. In iTunes, my music appears to be in g:\music\rock\Beatles..., but my Linux machine where SlimServer is running, the directory is /media/music/rock/Beatles... By doing a global search and replace on /media to g:\, the problem goes away. I guess if my share was from the root directory, it wouldn't be an issue, but that's not how I want my mapping to be set up. The original poster's problem is not the same. Simong, you need to change the setting in SlimServer for multi-disc sets. You can see that SlimServer is appending "Disc 2 of 2" to the name and that won't be found in iTunes. Uh oh, I think I see the problem!
What do the ratings look like in the Hist file - are they 0-5 or 0-100 ?
Seems I forgot to multiply by 20 in the Update script.
If you're happy modifying it yourself.the line in iTunesUpdateWin.pl

Should be

Hi Craig, Love the new web update feature of the iTunes update plugin. However, I am not seeing the graphics to increase or decrease the ratings. If it matters, I am using: * SlimServer Version: 6.2.2 - 5597 - Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98) - EN - utf8 * Fishbone skin. I've installed trackstat, sqlplaylist, and itunesupdate. I am getting a message of "nothing being timed" in the itunes update screen. I am not running this dynamically, and have installed activeperl. Any suggestions to fix this problem appreciated. This is because the favourites 'plugin' is no longer a plugin in 6.5 onwards and steals the key mappings before iTunesUpdate can take them. Not really sure what to do about this - I think the only answer will be a custom remote map which is very messy in my experience. [SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunes Update and Last.FM (Slimscrobbler/Jscrob2)
I have three primary ways of listening to music...
1. Directly in iTunes - Last.FM submissions taken care of by jscrob2 in
iTunes (live submission)
2. On an iPod - Last.FM submissions also taken care of by jscrob2 in
iTunes (cached submission)
3. On a SlimServer - Last.FM submissions taken care of by
audioscrobbler (live submission).
The problem I have is that I also run the iTunes Update plugin on
SlimServer which updates play counts and ratings back into iTunes. This
action causes jscrob2 to consider the SlimServer updates as additional
plays to be reported to Last.FM (just like an iPod) - so Last.FM either
flags submissions as SPAM (bad) or double counts (worse).
I'd like to modify the iTunes Update script to switch jscrob2 off in
iTunes before it loads it's updates and then switch it back on
afterwards. This seems to be possible via the iTunes SDK by switching
to the default visualiser before and back afterwards. This would allow
me to maintain live updates from SlimScrobbler whilst allowing cached
updates from my iPod.
I've got as far as this in iTunesUpdateWin.pl:

Should James' iTunes Update plugin work on the SqueezeBox Controller? I'd like to be able to set track ratings with my new toy! Looking at the plugin code there are some references to Jive and some commented out menu code so maybe somethng was started? When I try and use it via the controller or SqueezePlay I get an empty "iTunes Update" menu under the "Extras" item while playing. I've just posted new versions of my iTunes Update & Party Shuffle plugins for SqueezeCenter 7.0 at my home page http://www.jamescraig.co.uk/SlimServer iTunes Update is a plugin for keeping your iTunes library up-to-date with SC listening. It synchronizes play & skipped counts and dates and ratings between the two. Tracks can be rated from players & the web interface and playlists can be saved from SC to iTunes. All SlimServer platforms are supported in various ways. On Windows, it also populates the SC library with iTunes art as tracks are played. iTunes PartyShuffle is a plugin (for Windows only - Mac testers needed!) that creates SC playlists in real-time from iTunes - no need to scan the iTunes library beforehand! It also scans new tracks into SC's library as they appear in the playlist. If you have Erland's Dynamic Playlist plugin installed, it can be accessed through that plugins menus - I recommend using the two together. Consider these as beta versions. They seem to work OK to me, but I expect there are still some bugs in there! iTunes Update doesn't work on multi-disc albums if you have the option set in SqueezeCentre ( I forget the name) which is adds "(Disc 1 of 2)" to the album name. I recall when you have the plugin installed in the wrong place, then correct it, that the cache files need to be removed while SqueezeCentre is stopped in order for it to work. Yes, unfortunately (but unsurprisingly) iTunes needs to be running to get the full functionality of the plugin. If you close it, the plugin will start it again. There should be an iTunesUpdate menu in the Extras menu of the Controller? The cache I referred to is SqueezeCentre's own file cache, not the web browser's. It's the 'direct update' option that determines if iTunes is started. Without this on, the artwork, playlist saving, and song info features will not work. Is the text in the options screen there now?
