Re: Internet Explorer For Macintosh

2006-02-01 Thread Cameron Kaiser
I never really liked IE anyways. Between iCab, FireFox, Safari (my least
favorite of these) and Shiira, there's little need to have anything from
the Evil Empire websurfing for me.

I'm probably going to be unpopular for saying this, but I actually liked
IE5 on OS 9 and preferred it to the other alternatives (I alternate between
Netscape 4.8 and IE 5 on my OS 9 machines). I'm keeping a copy on my
fileserver for posterity.

Re: 1400 Mac OS 9

2006-01-16 Thread Cameron Kaiser
I've tried OS 9.1 on all three of the 1400 flavors and even with 64MB
of RAM they don't run nealry as quick as with OS 8.6. I have always
put OS 8.6 back on the 1400's because it they were too slow.

Without a G3 upgrade in a 1400 it will not handle OS 9 very well.

Agreed. However, with a G3, I *do* recommend OS 9, especially if you have
full RAM. I ran 9.1 on my 1400+G3/333 and it wasn't too bad.

Re: Good luck, and questions on NuPowr upgrade

2005-11-20 Thread Cameron Kaiser
Thanks for the input, Cam. Does OS9 have any really compelling features that
 would make the upgrade irresistible?

I don't know if I would call them really compelling, but 9.1 adds improved
file security, additional shortcuts in the Finder, IP-based AppleShare without
using AppleShareIP, improved Sherlock, Software Update control panel, and
better multiple-user support. There are also some USB enhancements, like
USB printer sharing over TCP, but this is irrelevant on a 1400, of course.

Myself, I prefer 9.1 to 8.6, but it's because I'm used to all the little
niceities. I would still upgrade to 8.6, though. 8.6's nanokernel improves
performance quite a bit.

BTW, How well will OS 9 run on the 1400 with 64 MB RAM and the G3 processor?
I'm now on 8.5, but might consider upgrading.

On my 1400+G3/333 with 60MB of RAM, OS 9.1 runs very well. I would update
to 8.6 at a minimum, though, to take advantage of its bug fixes.

Re: Installing OS on 1400c

2005-09-22 Thread Cameron Kaiser
Good result today, a CF adapter I'd won on eBay turned up. I now have
a 64MB card to use as VM for the 1400

Problem is, every time I try to use it the control panel suggests that
there is not enough room. When I use 'Get Info' on the card it reports
 as having 62MB available

How much RAM is in your 1400? Pre-OS X VM minimally requires the amount of
physical RAM, plus the amount of virtual RAM (which is always at least 1MB),
to be free on the swap device. If you have 60+MB of RAM, then VM will require
at least 61MB be free on the card (and the 62MB figure may be only an
approximation or rounded up).

PowerMac G5, and the other has a PB G4. By the way, are there funky OS 7.5
 stickers out there?

My 1400 has one of the custom shells and a Biohazard sticker. That gets a
lot of attention by airport screeners. ^_^

Re: Off topic OT : Long weekend topic - what macs do you own?

2005-05-21 Thread Cameron Kaiser
It's a long weekend up here north of the 49th, still no hockey so I
thought of asking everyone what Macs they own. Lots of powerbooks, for
sure, but what else? Maybe ppcs and up?
 Powerbook Duo 230 (braindead) , 7200/90 , G3/333 beige, three 3400c
pbs(2 complete and 1 for parts) for me (plus about 30-40 Apples, apple
clones, early macs - no originals but a few SEs, SE30s, Classics etc. as
 well as a quadra 950 etc. )
Winner gets 24 hours of bragging!

I'd say you win, but here's my list of Macs I own:

Mac Plus
Mac SE/30
Mac Portable (original sans backlight)
2 x IIsi
3 x IIci
LC 3
Q605
PowerBook 540c
7100 (with a G3)
PowerBook 1400 (with a G3)
2 x 7300 (both with G3s)
Network Server 500 (with a 200MHz 604e)
Network Server 700 (with a 150MHz 604e)
Beige G3 (out on loan)
G4/450 Sawtooth
dual 1.25GHz G4 MDD

The Plus, two of the IIcis, the Q605, the 1400, both 7300s, the ANS 500, the
G4/450 and the MDD are all in service. The rest work, but aren't in use
right now.

There's a couple IIgses floating around, too.

Re: OS 9 on pb 1400

2005-05-07 Thread Cameron Kaiser
I wouldn't advise it with that little RAM. I run 9.1 on a couple of 1400's
with 64 MB, and it takes up about 16 MB.

What if I use Virtual Memory?

I presume that's with VM turned on. On my 60MB 1400 with Apple VM on, 9.1
used around ~18MB.

RAM Doubler 9 helped this quite a bit, but it still takes a hit. Don't run
9.1 on a 1400 that isn't at max RAM. On the other hand, I needed the features
of 9.1, so that's why I run it, and with RD9's help, I can still run a great
deal of applications at once without unduly thrashing to disk.

Re: 1400 'upgrade' tips wanted - from a new user

2005-04-21 Thread Cameron Kaiser
-using OS 8.6, 9 (.1 and 2.2) and OS X (maybe somebody got this far...)

 I run 7.6.1, I think, in mine. I don't use it for much, but basics - I
don't even surf the web with it. Interestingly, my 1400c running 7.6.1
crashes less than my 3400c with 8.5. Unless there is something you
 really need, I wouldn't use anything above 8.5. The 1400 won't support
9.2.2, that I am aware of. Stops at 9.1.
PPC 603e doesn't support OS X. You have to put in a G3 accelerator card.

With the OS 9.2.x hack installers, you can get 9.2.x installed on a 1400,
but for 9.x of any sort, a G3 is recommended.

OS X won't presently work on *any* NuBus machine, even one with an
aftermarket G3 (including the 1400).

[...]
 -Ram Doubler

Ram Doubler, the application, is redundant with System 7 virtual memory.
The more virtual memory you turn on, the more the machine has to hit the
hard drive for data, the slower the computer will - generally - run.

Strongly disagree. Apple VM before OS X is an absolute dog and dreadfully
inefficient as far as speed and HD utilitization. OTOH, RD uses compression
and reallocation techniques so the hard disk needs to be hit less, and
requires less HD space when it *does* hit the HD, to boot. RD9 was a great
upgrade for my 1400 and is a significant improvement over Apple VM.

Incidentally, my roadwarrior 1400 was a 1400cs/117 which has been turned into
a c screen with a G3/333, 60MB RAM, external video option, 3Com 3C589
Ethernet PCMCIA NIC and BestData 56K modem running OS 9.1 with RD9. Wonderful
machine.

Even with a G3/333 and maxxed RAM, WaMCoM Moz on my 1400 is a real dog. It

I didn't quite pick up on the hardware in the beginning of the thread, but
if you don't have the full 64 MB real RAM in the 1400, it's going to be a
real pig. Even then, it's pretty slow; I run it on a 6500, which also has a
603e, I have 128 MB. A G3 would help an awful lot, on both machines.

It helps an awful lot, but my 1400+G3/333 with maxxed RAM and RAM Doubler 9
set to double (rather than grotty old Apple VM) still chugs in Mozilla.

Re: What am I doing wrong?

2004-12-05 Thread Cameron Kaiser
If you have a printer cable - you connect through the print ports of the
two machines. It'll be slow but you can do it that way. I sometimes
connect my 1400 to my G3 that way.
You need a Ethernet hub or switch to use 10/100 ethernet. direct lines
computer to computer doesn't work - I never heard of a gaming cable before.

It should work if it's a crossover cable, although on some systems because
of AppleTalk's intelligent [sic] detection system, it can be tough to get
AppleTalk working this way because the ad hoc network won't be up until
both machines are, and AppleTalk won't talk to Ethernet until there's a
network there. This isn't usually a problem for later versions of MacOS.

Re: Processor Upgrades for PowerBook 1400

2004-11-17 Thread Cameron Kaiser
problems started popping up. Even though the upgrade
was great, all in all I would never buy from Sonnet
again (personally I hate them)! For some reason I
wasn't able to use any OS after 8.5 (that means no
8.6+). And even 8.5 was unstable, it would crash on
occasion. Using 8.6 or higher would only allow me to
use the computer for a few minutes before it locked
up. When I called the company they pretty much told me
to shove it and that it was an Apple software problem
 and not there's.

9.1 works just fine. I use it on my 1400 with a Sonnet G3/333.

Myself, I'm looking at a 466, since I use this laptop a lot, and I don't
really feel like getting another.

Re: 1400c RAM and 1400c Hard Disk

2004-10-09 Thread Cameron Kaiser
As stated, the PB1400 supports up to 64MB of RAM. If you 'Book came
with 12MB as new, then it will only support up to 60MB (unless you can
find a replacement Apple 8MB card to swap for the 4MB one that came
 with your machine).

Actually, even this won't work reliably. If you have multiple stackable
cards installed with the 8MB Apple module in a machine that originally had
4MB, you'll get multiple inexplicable RAM errors at startup. This is why
my 1400 is stuck at 60MB, too -- it was a 1400cs/117 originally and that's
exactly what happened. Others on this list have also observed this phenomenon.

Re: 1400c RAM

2004-10-09 Thread Cameron Kaiser
RAM doubler doesn't actually double your RAM. It just uses hard drive
 space as ram.
You can already do that with the Memory control panel.

Not quite true. RD9, at least, also can compress memory, and RD has always
been able to steal RAM allocated to other applications that aren't using it.
After all these fail, then it falls back on hard disk virtual memory, but
even that isn't quite the same:

The Apple version is slower, but also free.
 RAM Doubler is slightly faster.

... in addition to being faster, RD does not require a baseline VM allocation
on the disk, i.e. Apple VM will require 1MB of the hard disk per MB of real
RAM, plus an additional 1MB, to enable VM at its lowest setting and RD does
not. On my 1400cs/G3+333 with 60MB physical RAM, Apple VM required 61MB of
hard disk space just to give me the minimal VM allocation of 1MB (in other
words, just simply to turn it on with -no- extra VM!) RD has no such
restriction, and I was able to instantly reclaim that space (a boon on smaller
hard disks) in addition to its faster paging algorithm.

Nothing will come close to actual RAM.

Fully agreed. :)

Re: 1400c RAM

2004-10-09 Thread Cameron Kaiser
I realize that you're talking about physical ram, but what about
RamDoubler? I've got it installed in my 5300 and the system
profiler tells me that I have 56meg installed with 112meg available.
Would that help his memory problem?

RD is very handy on the 1400 (I use RD9), but it is most useful for a
situation where you have a large number of applications requiring a
cumulative amount of RAM, as RD can rob Peter to pay Paul in those cases
if applications are inefficiently using their respective allocations.
However, RD's RAM redistribution can't help a situation where one large
application requests a large memory space; in that case, it will either
compress memory (depending on the version of RD; RD9 can do this), or it
will fall back on its own VM algorithm, which is faster and more thrifty
of hard disk space than Apple VM, but still sucks.

Ah-HA! Someone who knows about OF! I have been wanting to know for
AGES, what other OF commands are there? I know about reset-all and

got a list? Or any resources to follow thus further? It would be
 really interesting.

Being able to hack OpenFirmware is a must for doing any kind of custom
OS hackage on modern Macs.

Actually, the NetBSD/macppc install documentation is a good introduction
to what OpenFirmware can do. (Warning: this is a BIG file and you'll have
to scroll down quite a bit to the relevant sections, but you'll get the
hang of it in no time.)

ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.6.2/macppc/INSTALL.html

And this is another more formal introduction:

http://www.kernelthread.com/publications/firmware/

Here's even a Towers of Hanoi in OF, over the network!

http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/apme/hanoi/

Learning OF is a *very* useful skill.

There's a two part tutorial on OF in Apple's archives, somewhere.
It was written for the Apple Network Server (Shiner), which does not
run Mac OS (it runs IBM's AIX, or some Linuxes) and its users needed to
know OF in order to perform some usual ANS functions, such as invoking
test sections, or specification of the boot device.

Yes, I have those TIL documents. (And I own two Shiners, as it happens --
this very box that I'm typing on is an ANS 500, and I have an ANS 700 as a
playbox.)

Type, at the OF prompt,

I'd be interested in this too, but I don't think
it's possible. Apparently the PCMIA slot on the

In practical terms, correct. Many moons ago someone mentioned some mythical

Re: PowerBook with Sonnets 500mhz G4 Questions Galore

2004-06-28 Thread Cameron Kaiser
So I finally got my Sonnet Crescendo WS/G4 500 today into my 266 wallstreet
 YAY!

 I have some questions:

1: How do I know if AltiVec is enabled? I ask because when I run the
AltiVec Test program by Dean Dauger it says AltiVec is detected and the
pictures fly by, but Final Cut Pro 2 (which I really need AltiVec for) seems
mysteriously to be doing things roughly half as fast as my 900mhz G3 tower,
when it should I would assume be much closer to par.

Not necessarily; AltiVec only improves certain vector functions, not all
processor operations. The clock speed is still your greatest predictor of
relative performance.

Re: PB 1400/G3 - Problem #1 - brief success, then back to Square 1

2004-06-14 Thread Cameron Kaiser
Anyway, at first everything worked great! - booted up fine, showed the
Sonnet - Simply Fast! message, and Metronome said the L2 cache was
working. Shut down and rebooted a few times to make sure everything was
all right, and I was a happy camper.

This tells me the L2 is fine.

But then, I couldn't leave well enough alone ... the 1400/133 had more RAM
in it (two stacked 24 mb modules) than the 1400/166 (one module). I had
not wanted to mess with that while I was working on the G3 card, but now
that I had everything working right, I decided to switch the RAM out. And
 - you guessed it - as soon as I switched the RAM modules, the Sonnet
 Upgrade extension started freezing again!

See what you get for pushing your luck? ;)

Now you get to meet the other issue with the 1400: RAM voodoo. What modules
are in the system now?

My 1400/117 kicked and screamed with stacked modules until I had the
original Apple 4MB module re-installed (upgrading that to an 8MB apparently
broke the bank). Subtly different timing between stacked modules can also
cause this problem to manifest, and it can be maddeningly difficult to track
down. The G3 is a little more sensitive to this because it likes faster RAM,
so it's not too surprising it only shows up with the Sonnet.

Since the G3 worked fine with your original RAM configuration, I actually
doubt the Sonnet card is at fault per se.

OK, a little info for my situation. I like the way that this last

 L2 Cache being faulty?

Sorry, I should have clarified. It's not that Metronome was happy per se,
but that the rest of the system seemed to be (although if Metronome were
*un*happy, that's a strong indication the L2 is bung).

2004-06-09 Thread Cameron Kaiser
I recently got hold of a 1400/133 with a Sonnet Crescendo 333 mhz G3 card
in it, running OS 8.5. In general it seems to be running fine, but I am
having two problems. This post covers Problem #1, namely, that altough
the G3 card seems to be working fine, I can't seem to put the Sonnet
Upgrade extension in the system folder - whenever I do, it causes the
powerbook to freeze during start-up just before the icon parade, i.e.
right when the Sonnet extension is trying to install.
[...]
If someone can tell me how to get the extension to work right I'd be most
 appreciative.

There have been reports of incompatibilities with Sonnet cards and 8.[56].
In order, to try,

1. download the most current Extension from Sonnet.
2. upgrade to 9.1. (My 333 works fine in my 1400, but I leapfrogged
directly from 8.1 to 9.1.)

Wonder if the list can help me with this problem. I have a 1400
hooked to a modem. When I want to print, I have to unhook the modem
and plug in the printer. Is there any kind of splitter that will
allow both to be plugged in at the same time?

There are a number of 8-pin mini-DIN switchboxes that will do this (just
turn the knob to whichever you want). MemoryX sold a few on clearance, and
I see them at Fry's now and then.

Alternatively, you could also get a PCMCIA modem, which I have in mine
(although it gets little use now that I have Ethernet and broadband).

a Blackbird PCMCIA cardcage tell me if this works for them:

http://www.floodgap.com/retrotech/mac/enet3c589/

I have no idea if this will work, but I'd be very grateful if you'd like
to give it a spin. Probably it will work, though -- just make sure you
backup your System Folder before installing the Extension, just in case
(you can just _D_uplicate it in the Finder).

Re: PB1400 G3 question

2004-05-11 Thread Cameron Kaiser
This is kind of off topic from your wireless questions, however seeing
that you have the same set up as I do I have a couple of questions.
What did your 1400 start life as? 117, 133, or 166? The reason I ask
is that the Sonnet G3/400 I have makes the machine crash whenever I try
and turn on the extension for the backside cache. Some have suggested
that it might be the difference in the 117 logic board vs that of the
133 and 166. Have you ever had any problems with the machine crashing
due to the Sonnet extension? What version of the extension do you use?

I haven't had any trouble with my cs/117 upgraded to a G3/333 and a c screen.
I don't remember the version of the Sonnet extension, but it's been rock
solid under 9.1 (the rest of the stats: 1400c+G3/333+512K, 60MB RAM, original
750MB disk). It might be something about the /400, but I can't imagine what.
I'm planning to get a /400 in the near future myself.

 I have a 117 upgraded to a Sonnet G3/400 running 9.1, the original
750MB HD, and 54MB RAM. I have 64MB, but the 8MB Apple Module crashes
with both of the piggybacked 24 chip modules in (maybe logic board
 related too??).

Did yours start with 16MB or 12MB? Mine was a 12MB (8MB plus 4MB Apple
module), and upgrading the 4MB to an 8MB Apple module caused no end of
trouble which went away when I put the 4MB back in.

Re: Old school Appletalking

2004-04-26 Thread Cameron Kaiser
I'm trying to get some files off of a 520c with OS 7.5 to my iMac with
10.2.8. I've set up Appletalk via the ethernet connection, and can connect
to the 520c with my iMac. Once I connect, however, I can't see any drives
that I could connect to. File Sharing is, obviously, enabled on the 520c.

Does that mean it seems to connect successfully?

I've had much better luck in OS X using the good ol' Chooser running in

Re: HP LaserJet 4ML printing (Was Re: )

2004-04-11 Thread Cameron Kaiser
Specialty papers often have a top and bottom side since the top has
clay or other substances present to make it very smooth. But for
regular laser paper stock that's not an issue.

Actually, this isn't true either, especially for older assemblies. Laser
paper is supposed to have an imperceptible curl to compensate for the curl
introduced by the fuser. When loaded correctly, the paper with its baseline
curl goes through the fuser, gets curled the other way, and comes out
with the two curls cancelling (i.e., straight). When loaded wrong, you get
a double curl and a jam.

This happened incessantly with my otherwise excellent LW 16/600 and I was
about ready to go buy new rollers and try to repair it (at moderate
expense) when someone recommended I just turn the paper over. Suddenly,
it started working perfectly!

While this may make no difference with modern assemblies (dunno), it *does*
make a difference with older printers, believe me. As a result, I only buy
sided laser printer stock, and load it into the printer as it directs, and
the LaserWriter just purrs now.

Yes. You need the 9.2 Startup Disk control panel (I think Apple has it
available as a download). This is well known with G3 upgrades (mine did
it too).

Re: The 1400 vs. The 3400

2004-03-20 Thread Cameron Kaiser
I have a slew of older PBs, ranging from a mint PB 100 to a PB 1400 (G3-333
upgraded). I am thinking of getting a newer 'Book, and am leaning seriously
towards a 3400. Specifically, what a the real advantages of the 3400 over the
my upgraded 1400 (64MB RAM, OS 9.1)? I only plan on spending several hundred
bucks, so the 3400 seems like the logical progression. Of course, I am
keeping my 1400, as well. The 3400 seems like a really great PB from
 everything I have
read, so I would like to hear more about it.

IMHO, there's two advantages that I've found of the 3400 over a G3-based
1400: it takes more RAM (up to 144MB), and it's at least somewhat
Cardbus-capable (see

http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/Cardbus/Cardbus.html

). On the other hand, a G3-based 1400 (especially a 333MHz+ one) would
probably eat the 3400 for lunch w/r/t raw performance, even factoring in
the 3400's 40MHz bus speed. It would be interesting to see the numbers.

Of course I could buy an old laptop PC but then I would be off topic... ;^)

I think it would be far too slow, actually (and Windows loves RAM, of which

Re: OT: My favorite PowerBook

2004-03-18 Thread Cameron Kaiser
I am interested in reading which PowerBooks people like most. I like the
1400, it has a sturdy, simple, and intuitive design, and a really nice
keyboard. Sure it's cobbled together from a 68030-based I/O bus attached to
a processor that never was anything spectacular, with limited ram and screen
size, But it holds a certain charm that most PowerBooks lack today.
Anyone else have a favorite 'book?

I'm a big 1400 fan as well. My 1400c+G3/333, which started life as a lowly
1400cs/117, has done so well and upgraded so splendidly that I'm going to
buy it a 466MHz G3 rather than saving for a new one. I expect it will yield
me solid service for many more years.

Re: Fast PowerBook?

2004-02-02 Thread Cameron Kaiser
Heck, I have a Commodore 128 on my desk (granted, next to a dual 1.25GHz
G4, but it's still on my desk). I'm *proud* to unleash my sleek 1400 with
a wacky design on the top cover on an unsuspecting world. The loud custom
top usually gets people to come over and check it out.

I'd LOVE for a way to network my Amiga 500 with either my PB
 190 or 6320!

This is getting off-topic kinda but what the heck. My 128 is wired into the
apartment Ethernet via a device called a Lantronix UDS-10, which has a
modem mode allowing you to dial IP addresses with standard Hayes AT
commands. To connect to my Unix host (a Mac running NetBSD, natch), I just
type ATDT256.256.256.256/23 (insert your address here), and it opens up
a telnet connection that any terminal program can use. This works with
anything with a serial port.

I'm not sure if there's an Ethernet solution for the A500 (I have an A500
myself with a GVP accelerator), but I know that the A1200 accommodates
PCMCIA cards, and there are some with AmigaOS and NetBSD/amiga drivers.

Re: Fast PowerBook?

2004-02-01 Thread Cameron Kaiser
 I have a 1400c with Mac OS 9.1, a Sonnet G3 333 MHz/1 Mb, 64 Mb, 16-bit
Video out card, a 3 Gb Fujitsu HD, and a Global Village 56K
 Modem/Ethernet PC Card.

This is very similar to mine: a 1400c, also with a G3/333, 60MB of RAM, an
Apple 8-bit external video card, and a 3Com EtherLink III.

This is my main (and favorite) computer. I use it mainly for internet
browsing, and a little Photoshop editing.
 I can get, for a reasonable price, a Kanga, with Mac OS 9.1, a G3 250
MHz/512 K, 48 Mb, internal Video out, a 5 Gb HD, internal Ethernet, and
a MegaHertz 56K PC Card modem (plus the internal 33.6 K).
My question: Would the Kanga is faster for what I use it?
I know it has a faster bus (50 MHz, the 1400 is only 33 MHz), but the
 1400 has a faster CPU...
 Advantages? Disadvantages? Opinions?

You didn't post the price, but IMHO the Kanga's only major advantages
over the 1400, besides the better video and bus, is RAM ceiling (you
can go up to 160MB). If it were me, I would probably stick with the 1400.

I have the walnut cover as well, and a few others (my brother-in-law, the

where he added decals to one of the paper inserts for the clear top. The
BIOHAZARD decal is loads of fun. :)

Re: PB 1400c PRAM Battery / Floppy Drive

2004-01-31 Thread Cameron Kaiser

Battery only, I'm afraid, though you don't have to
shut down a 1400 to change the drive in the right bay,
sleeping it before swapping will do fine.

I've been told this is an absolute never do under any circumstances no no.
I've done what you suggested myself, but read not too long ago (a few months
maybe, either on LEM or an apple discussion board) that you never load a bay
into the book without shutting down first. If someone else has an opinion on
this, please, feel free to prove me wrong, I'm just stating what I've read.

No, you can sleep a 1400 to swap drives. You just can't do it with the
machine up and running, but it doesn't have to be totally shut down either.
It's best, of course, to unmount any CD or floppy in that drive before
sleeping it and taking the drive out.

Re: PB 5300 OS Installation Problems...

2004-01-09 Thread Cameron Kaiser
I installed 9.0 on my 1400, and RAM sure is tight. Higher than 9.0 would
 be even worse.

On the other hand, if you have a G3 in your 1400, I strongly recommend 9.1
(granted you'll need to max out RAM and turn VM on). In fact, due to the
problems that the Sonnet extension has had with 8.6 and the 1400, it may not
even work *without* 9.1 (although it does work in 8.1, so that may be an
option for some users).

I use 9.1 regularly on my 1400 with 60MB RAM, and it does pretty well. The
fact I have a G3/333 in it does help. :)

2003-12-22 Thread Cameron Kaiser
When I hear it spin up, I usually go to the Control Strip and spin it down.
Anyone have any ideas on why it spins up to begin with?

MacOS probes mounted disks occasionally to make sure they're still running.
This is why having a CD in a 1400's CD drive and mounted, even if you're not
playing or accessing it, wastes more power than not having a CD in it (or
having the module totally out of the unit). Ditto for floppies.

Re: 1400 RAM Question

2003-12-14 Thread Cameron Kaiser
How many people are able to get a 1400 with an upgrade to work with the
Sonnet extension? What logic board do you have, what upgrade variety
do you have, how much RAM, what OS are you running, and lastly, what
 version of the extension. I have 1.4.5, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, and 2.0.3, and
have tried all with no success.

Mine is (I think) 1.4.5 with a Sonnet G3/333 in a 117cs (converted to a
117c), running OS 9.1 and 60MB RAM (VM on).

9.1 is The place to be if you have the MHz, even if you are lower on

I second this. 9.1 takes up about 19MB on my 1400 with VM on, but with

Re: 1400 RAM Question

2003-12-10 Thread Cameron Kaiser
OK, I am now at a loss. I recently just received another 24MB chip to
bring my 1400 to 64 MB. When I installed it, everything booted up, but
when the OS 9.1 Loading screen appeared, after a minute, I received an
error message saying that the Memory Testing detected something with
the memory (I do not remember the exact wording other than the fact
that it recommended me to see a technician, etc). The system then
booted up fine. Looking in the ATM, I see that only 8 out of the 24 MB
are recognized (48MB total instead of 64MB). Upon realizing I may need
to Zap my PRAM, I did so. This time when i tried booting up, it kept
giving me a bus error and forcing me to restart recommending a start
 up without extensions on. [...]

This actually sounds like a manifestation of bad 1400 RAM voodoo. The
1400 seems to have some issue about how many modules it can have
installed at a given time.

In my case, mine started as a 117MHz. This has the 4MB Apple module, and
it came with 8MB in the stackable slot. This works.

I then upgraded the 4MB Apple module to an 8MB pull from a 133. This works.

I then bought a 48MB stackable module to bring it right to 64MB. Got
the same error you did. Scratched my head, called the company. Replacement
did the same thing.

In desperation I started pulling and replacing RAM. Eventually yanked the
8MB Apple module and it gave me 56MB instead of 8. Scratched my head and
put back in the original 4MB module. 60MB. Put in the 8MB module again.
Scream and whine.

For whatever reason, especially in the 1400s that didn't come with 8MB
Apple modules stock, there seems to be some limitation on how modules
can be installed together. In my case, I had to downgrade to a 4MB Apple
module to get at least 60MB seen all told.

Others have seen this kind of funky mojo, so it's not just something
freaky with my 1400.

2003-09-24 Thread Cameron Kaiser
9.1 ran more reliably than 9.0.4 and 8.1 did for me on _my_ particular
 machine.

I'll second this. 9.1 has been much more stable than 8.1 on my 1400+G3/333.
However, without a G3 and without maxing out the RAM, be warned it will
really drag. If you're still using a 603, stay on 8.x (9.1 is just too
glacial).

Re: PB 1400 to control a radio receiver?

2003-09-07 Thread Cameron Kaiser
I'd like to use my PB 1400 to control a shortwave radio
receiver--namely a JRC NRD-525. The radio connects to a PC with an
 RS-232c connector.

I have tried using my SCSI/Dock adapter with the RS-232c, but the
receiver doesn't show up as a SCSI device in the Apple System
Profiler. Also, when using Zterm to try to talk to the radio, it
only looks for serial port devices.

Wait, is this a SCSI device, or a serial device? RS-232c is NOT the same
pinout as the Apple 25-pin SCSI, and you'd better make sure nothing is
damaged!

You'll need to use a Mac mini-DIN serial to RS-232 converter cable. These
are easy to find and fairly inexpensive, especially at car boot sales. This
will connect to the modem/printer port on the back of your 1400, and to the
RS-232 port of your shortwave radio receiver.

I'm hoping nothing is damaged ... :-/

Re: Floppy problem

2003-09-03 Thread Cameron Kaiser
 I use a PowerBook 1400cs a lot. But if I take a floppy I use on it
and put it in my wife's iMac USB floppy, I often get the floppy needs
initialization message. But I can read floppies fine on the PB which
my wife makes on her iMac. Why would that be?

Funny, I have another 1400 floppy disk weirdness story. A disk formatted in
a Windows PC is readable on my 1400. If, after putting it in and letting it
churn and create its resource fork repository, I put it back in the Windows
PC, the PC will no longer read it. (The 1400 still reads it fine.)

For that matter, this happens with my DOS 486 laptop as well, so I don't
think it's Windows at fault (for once).

If I write protect the disk so that the Mac can save no changes, it survives.

Very odd.

Incidentally, my dual G4's USB floppy will read the disk both before and
after the apparent munging by the 1400.

my wife makes on her iMac.

I should mention that while mine *looks* like a 1400c, it started life as
a cs/117 and got a lot of upgrades, including a 1400c upper half.

I have an 8.6 system on my desktop and tried briefly to get them
going from there, but no go; I don't have an 8.1 system handy, I'd
have to create one. I'm also wondering if my quicktime 5 might be
part of the problem; I think (from the docs and readmes) that much of
the video was rendered via quicktime.

Could be that. I had a LOT of problems with a video capture card of mine

Re: 1400/G3 and Netscape 7 ?

2003-07-12 Thread Cameron Kaiser
Any suggestions? Oh, and since I'm considering a downgrade to 8.5.1
(9.1 will not let me turn off VM and I prefer Ram Doubler), does
anyone know if NS 7 will run with that?

7 needs Carbon (I think), so 8.6 (maybe 8.1 but I had problems running even
Netscape 4.8 in 8.1).

However, why won't 9.1 let you turn VM off? How much RAM is in your 1400?
I can turn VM off on my 60MB 9.1 1400, although I note with irritation I
have about 2MB left to run applications ;-)

even with VM on (just about necessary with 9.1 on the 1400).

Re: New PB 1400 owner questions (and a IOXperts 802.11 driverquestion)

2003-06-16 Thread Cameron Kaiser
Anybody with an upgraded 1400? Are Sonnet's claims of 30% more
battery life with upgrade close to accurate? That'd be a pretty neat
 fringe benefit.

Yes, they are accurate. Since switching to a 333MHz G3, battery life has
extended out. I did a stress test with Battery Amnesia and the numbers I
got weren't too far off from Sonnet's.

Any recommendations for a USB PC card?

Yes, don't. Unless you find a mythical 16-bit one, all USB PC cards are
CardBus, and the 1400 isn't.

Any other general pointers? I've owned a PB 150 and now have an iBook
500 (which I'm selling soon; thus the 1400 purchase), so I suppose I'm
just looking for general 1400 pointers.

Max out the RAM ASAP. Putting 60MB in mine has helped immeasurably, and
I can even run OS 9. (I wouldn't recommend this with the 117MHz CPU,
though. Wait until you can find a G3.)

This, of course, is ridiculous. Obviously, something flaky is going on with
the list software. Does the list-dad care to comment??

It's the list's way of making you trim your posts. If you have too much
quoted content, it rejects the message. This also helps with people who
don't notice they've quoted the entire digest, which has happened before.

BZZZT! Wrong-o. (Nice try, though. :-) ) Not that you could know, as the
list saw fit to not accept the disputed post... There were THREE quoted
lines and a good 15-20 of original.

Actually, it has done this to me when I did just that, so I know it's
watching for it (I accidentally had the entire old message quoted). Since I
use Elm on a Unix server, I know I'm not spewing HTML or weird encodings.
Maybe that's what it's objecting to in yours, then.

I have been booting up my 1400c (stock 133mHz 601e, OS 8.6) with a Global
Village fax/modem/ethernet card which always remains in the slot, almost
every day for 2 years with no problems (never kicks it out). In addition,
for the past 6 months I've been booting it with a formatted 128mb CF card in
a card reader in the upper slot as well (set as Virtual Memory, BTW). As
long as I leave 'em alone, it boots fine every time.

Yep. My 1400 has been very happy with its Best Data 56K modem and its
EtherLink III 3c589C card, as long as I make sure not to sneak one in on it
until after it's booted up (or after it's shut down).
