It is not because some users might be using an Icom and others are using a Kenwood. Since the deviation levels mentioned were actually measured, it is obvious that the transmitter is being to 6 Khz deviation on occasion and the only way this is going to happen (assuming the deviation limiter circuitry is working properly and I see no reason it shouldn't be) is because the level from the controller to the transmitter is not set correctly and probably neither is the deviation control. Its basically a serial cable that has the output split so that you can plug it in as usual to whatever you are hooking together and then the 3rd port goes to another computer running Telix or some terminal. Then you can operate the device as usual and see the control commands come out in the terminal. After some playing around you can figure out their scheme and what you need to send it to do what. I have used this to figure out proprietary formats for lots of things and it works well. Most reecently there was a telephone call box that used a computer with the companys own software to control it. I wanted to control it with a PIC instead of a PC so I asked the company for their commands and formats etc. which they would not give. So, I snooped and in less than a day I had thrown their software in the trash and my PIC was working great. If I were you I would snoop on Doug Halls two serial lines going into the Kenwood radio. I am sure you can figure out what you need to send that way. Sounds like a great problem, if I had one of those radios I would try it myself. Hope this helps. While I'm not intimately familiar with the protocols of the older Kenwoods, Kenwood has historically used 9600 baud for its mobile radios' serial data. I know for a fact all the newer ones do (TM-V7, g707, V708, TM-271A). This is the easy part. The problem comes from Kenwood NOT having any sort of standard in the protocol used. When we coded up the control code for these radios for our controllers, we used a port sniffer to figure out the protocol used for the various (and totally undocumented!) commands. While Bob brings up an interesting point about SPI, I really don't think this is the case. Then again, I've been wrong before :-) However it should be easy enough to figure out with a working RBI-1 and a 'scope. They were kinda neat in this regard as they were like Micors, in the sense they only needed one xtal and had a 5 Mhz IF. So offsetting was easy. At the time, SoCal used reverse splits on UHF (don't know if they are still low in/high out down there) so it was a piece of cake to do. The only real problem I found with the Pulsar was that it used PNP PA devices (and perhaps even germanium ones too?), and was a PITA to repair. He built the logic for it and I think that he used a 567 tone decoder set. I remember this because it was after I got out of school in 1975. I think we later went together and bought a Telenetics (?) hybrid digital tone decoder and he built it onto a plug in board and substituted it for the 567's. It worked great and the remote base was a lot of fun to use. In fact, somewhere I may still have an extra set of GLB boards and the assembly instructions. He stored the frequencies in registers to program the GLB. When he had it ready, we put it up on the same building as the club repeater on the Oklahoma University Campus for which I am the trustee. The remote used Ringo Rangers, not good antennas. We put it about 100 foot horizontally down the building to avoid desense from the 146.88 repeater, but there would still be some when the remote came up. He could bring up the receiver, change frequencies, then bring up the transmitter, and switch between hi and low power. Later he designed a board using 1702 eproms to use an IC-22s in a remote base. I laid out a PC board for him and made him several copies. Another very close friend of mine, K5JB, built one of the boards and used a KIM-1 (6502) microprocessor to control a 22s and make it scan. I may have the radio because he left me a bunch of his radio equipment when he passed away. In fact, I probably still have an EBKA Familarizor Single Board Computer which was very similiar to the KIM-1 which I got from the fellow who designed it and was an acquaintance of mine at the time. I could probably go back and try to get a closer date to when this was. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Kinda of a strange question
Well hey there Skip! Long time no chat! Indeed, the 70's were a very cool time in ham repeaterdom. Ahhh, how I miss the days of the repeater wars with the GRONK folks down in San Diego! As you may remember, our system was also located on PV. Our repeater (UHF) was a modified Pulsar II (man I hated those germanium RF transistors!) but it worked pretty well all and all. But I was sure happy to finally replace it with the Quintron (which is still going strong too). Memories..like the corner of my mind... Ken At 03:23 PM 9/20/2004 -, you wrote: You beat me by a couple of years. I built a 22S control system from TTL that was on Palos Verdes and then later on Onyx Peak (9114 feet). The original controller used octal to set the actual N code into the 22S, but I later added a 2708 lookup table. *52 put you on 146.52, *34 put you on 146.34/146.94. Since it was all done by a lookup table it knew the band plan and would automatically select a repeater split if you dialed an input frequency or simplex on the output if you dialed an output frequency, etc. It did the right thing if you dialed *40 (people from L.A. will know that frequency). There were commands to force simplex or reverse. I can't find the schematic any longer, but I did find a control list dated 12/79 that was after the lookup table was added. My best guess is 1/79 when it first went on the air. I know my controller wasn't the first 22S controller as I later compared nodes with Greg (WB6KCD ?) who that had built a controller before I had. It also had cw unkey telemetry that sent the frequency in cw when you unkeyed. I can't tell you how sick I got of hearing 46 and 52 in cw over and over and ... It sounded like a good idea at the time. Boy those were the days ... we had the only ham box on Onyx peak for a year or so and could hear 3 states ... then a 2 meter repeater was installed. The 22S rolled over and died whenever the repeater keyed up (duh!). I'm not sure this matches your fully frequency agile definition as the 22s only covered the top 2 Mhz of the band. 73's Skip WB6YMH --- In Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com, Ken Arck [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi folks Is anyone aware of the earliest use of a synthesized remote base on an amateur repeater? [Repeater-Builder] KENWOOD TKR-850 UHF REPEATER Can it be tuned and Programed in the Ham Band
At 09:45 AM 9/4/2004 -0700, you wrote: The answer is probably. The fact that others have tuned a TKR-850 to the 70cm band is not an absolute guarantee that your unit will do the same. It may work fine, or it may barely make it. I'm afraid I have to disagree with your analysis that simply because others have retuned them to 70 cm is no guarantee. In fact, Kenwood spec's the TKR-850 in the ham band. I'm looking at the service manual and there, in black and white, is the freq. spec Frequency range 440 to 470 Mhz. Not to mention the Kenwood FPU programming software has 440 to 450 Mhz as a valid range. They tune easily and meet full factory spec when retuned. I haven't seen one yet that doesn't. There are 2 schools of thought about this but many folks use a solid state relay for switching 110v fans. Many folks use a mechanical relay. [Repeater-Builder] REPOST: ACC RC-850 accs. For Sale
A repost... I now have an 850 available. It has the VRT and non-registered patch boards, as well as a TS-32 installed. It has firmware version 3.42 installed. All boards are installed in a rack mount but it is not the official ACC case. All audio connections are via phone jacks, with everything else brought out to barrier strips. Guaranteed to be 100% functional The original audio delay chip (SD4096?) failed a few years ago and I replaced it with Rick Franz's retrofit delay, which has been working fine ever since (you can see his schematic at http://www.repeater-builder.com/acc/franzdelay.jpg).http://www.repeater-bu ilder.com/acc/franzdelay.jpg). I will also have an Icom IC-22U 2 meter radio available, which has a homebrew FC-1 installed internally. Obviously, it is wired to work with the 850 and simply plugs in. Anyway, I'm accepting offers so if you're interested, write me offlist with your offer! I will split the 22U from the 850 but only if someone takes the 850 first, without taking the radio. [Repeater-Builder] Coupling loops/probes
