 Help?

Is your freenet node running? (I think Macs have the ps command that
lists running processes... like ps aux | grep freenet.) If it's not
running, check the wrapper.log file in freenet's directory for more
details.

It was fixed in in build 1463, yes. [0] XP's days are numbered for even
more reasons: .NET 4.5 does not support XP, everything Vista and up
does, [1] and there's an in-development tray app written in it.

On reloading the KeyUtils plugin a 'not in archive' error creeps in due

The error can be corrected by copying the key, remove that %21 and add

Thanks for the report.

Odd, I'm not able to reproduce the problem. The key looks completely
fine in the source code too:
https://github.com/freenet/fred-staging/blob/next/src/freenet/pluginmanager/OfficialPlugins.java#L49

Could this be some problem with locale-dependent encoding? What is your
system locale?

Is it only when reloading? Does it happen when loading from scratch too?

Freenet 0.7.5 build 1463 is now available.

The Windows installer runs on Windows XP again. In 1462 it failed on XP
with the error message Floating point division by zero. If you are
still running XP, please upgrade! It is no longer supported by Microsoft
and is not secure. [0] We will drop support for installing on XP in a
future release.

In this release:

- Translation updates for Freenet, Freemail, FlogHelper, and KeyUtils
thanks to volunteers on Transifex. To upgrade a plugin, reload it from
the Plugins page and check Remove the plugin from the cache.
- Update default bookmarks.
- Code cleanup.
- Fix seed node problems.

Thank you for using Freenet!

Hi Dennis,

sure, we can support any kind of old system that you can port Freenet to, like

* DOS
* Amiga OS, and of course:
* GEOS

Be sure to ping us when you’ve completed the ports!

(But seriously, if a vendor does not support his OS anymore, neither should we.)

Likely not. I'm wary of trying to provide support for an OS that doesn't
get security updates.

In addition, I don't have a copy of XP. Unless someone who has XP is
willing to maintain the Windows stuff for XP, I'd say the Freenet
installers no longer support XP.

There is a new Windows installer; it is signed. (Without breaking
internal integrity checks like the last release.) It can run from and
install to paths with non-English characters. Thanks romnGit! There are
currently translations for English, French, and Spanish. If you'd like
to contribute a translation for your language [0] please send it to us.
Options for contacting us include Sone, GitHub, IRC, FMS, and the
mailing list [1].

There are performance problems with some types of file downloads -
specifically bulk downloads for CHKs. We think this might be due to
unofficial performance patches negatively impacting performance for
everyone not using them. If you are running these patches we ask that
you not run them so that bulk CHK performance can be restored
network-wide. In August 2011 build 1397 enabled New Load Management,
which was intended to avoid these types of weaknesses, but it introduced
performance problems at scale and was disabled. In the long term we hope
to fix these problems and redeploy NLM, but for right now we ask that
people not use these patches.

In this release:

 * Add an opennet seed node. Thanks Juiceman!
 * Add Korean Windows tray application translation. Thanks ilbe123!
 * Fix potential security problems with malicious UPnP devices. Thanks
   to waldheinz for the report.
 * Select options by default on the Add a Friend page.
 * Omit empty plugin groups on the plugin page.
 * Avoid leaking node location in link length probe.
 * Base stats page average distance on actual location instead of 0.0.

There is a new Windows tray application in development. It is planned to
replace the current tray and launcher for new installations. Its features:

 * Hide the tray icon while Freenet continues running.
 * Change startup preferences.
 * Change which browser it launches.
 * Hopefully will be false-positived less by antiviruses that are overly
   suspicious of scripting languages.
 * Be signed.

If you want to give feedback on the tray application it is here. [2]

Thank you for using Freenet!

That is correct. As mentioned in the release announcement: [0]

Signing the Windows installer caused an internal integrity check to
fail, which prevented the installer from working. The Windows installer
being offered for download now is still that for build 1459. Once
installed and connected Freenet can update itself to build 1461.

How long was your node up for, roughly? Sounds like a short time --

We gotta find out what those threads are. You can do that in the

helpful to get a thread dump with the Generate a Thread Dump button,

If you can, try to disable your firewall for a while, at least to test
things. They have been the cause of many mysterious networking issues
for me.

Yeeea, forget what I said earlier about the firewall. What's your CPU
usage when freenet gets into this hung/slow state? Maybe include your
http://localhost:/diagnostic/ info, which shows things like how
many Running threads you have, and other useful stuff. (I don't think
there's much of a privacy risk to paste that here, except perhaps the
top OS version stuff.)

Also your strangers/ page in advanced mode,
http://localhost:/strangers/?fproxyAdvancedMode=2
might tell you the Peer backoff reasons, but it sounds like it's
something local with your machine. From my experience, I've noticed
that IO (harddrive reading/writing) is usually the bottleneck. I'm not
sure what the equivalent of vmstat is for MSWindow$ -- something that
can show how much your system is reading/writing from/to disk.

it starts, but more often than not it happens after having Freenet
connected for a little bit, anywhere from half an hour to an hour. This
will happen with or without browsing around. Now, for some weird
reason, when this happens, I'm able to still attempt to reload a page,
as in Freenet is still trying to acquire all the blocks to show the
page and it stops, giving you the options to retry connecting, go back a
page, or close the attempt and go back to the main menu. And after a
while (about 10 to 20 min after being unable to load the other main menu
pages) the attempts to reload the pages won't work either, and they'll
just hang.

Hey, got a bit of a problem. I've gone through the regular installation
 instructions, but whenever I try to open the setup page in firefox, I'm
 unable to connect. Checking the status of the run.sh script, I found
that it hadn't been running, so I restarted it. It listed itself as
running for a very brief moment before going back to being inactive.
I've searched around for similar problems, but none of them were all
that helpful. I figure that the run.sh file is crashing but I'm unable to
understand exactly why. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the answer. Played around with the settings on a fresh freenet

less:

On the stats page, 1,45 GiB are allocated for Java and 1,30 GiB are in use.
I left alone the MaxPermSize setting, which seems to point to another variable:

MaxPermSize=wrapper.app.parameter.1=freenet.ini

Still testing, had some additional stability problems because VirtualBox seems
to have problems (BSODs with hardware virtualization and two CPUs in den VM). I
successfully started a copy of the original 400GiB node and set the datastore
size to 3000GiB. But after half an hour it still says Datastore(CHK-cache)

I'm pretty sure that's invalid and being ignored. It's supposed to be
additional command line arguments that you would pass to java... i.e.
they should start with a dash (-).

 wrapper.java.maxmemory=1536

That's probably what fixed things. Before you were using 1gig. Now
it's using 1.3gig.

 MaxPermSize=wrapper.app.parameter.1=freenet.ini

This also seems to be an invalid line. I think all the lines in the
wrapper.conf should start with wrapper.*. Moreoever, freenet.ini does
not / should not mention these lower level jvm settings (like
MaxPermSize). It might be worthwhile to paste your wrapper.conf file to
see if there's other bogus stuff.

That sounds normal for datastore resizing.

[freenet-support] Freenet 0.7.5 build 1461 released

2014-03-30 Thread Steve Dougherty
Freenet 0.7.5 build 1461 is now available.

The Mac and Linux web installers are now properly signed. The Windows
installer is now signed too. Translation updates for Fred, Freemail,
FlogHelper, and KeyUtils are included - largely thanks to volunteers on
Transifex. There are also translation updates for Web of Trust, but Web
of Trust staging is not stable enough to be deployed.

Build 1460 contained all these things but it was signed, which prevented
some types of coexistance with unsigned libraries. Signing is postponed
until a future release.

In this release:
 * Add Brazilian Portuguese translation.
 * Update Swedish, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese
   translations.
 * Add CSS filter support for nth psuedoclasses. Thanks paul@jCa8...!
 * Limit length of log displayed on startup page. Thanks vwoodzell!
 * Fix store location stats checking the wrong store. Thanks Matthias
   Treydte!
 * Update default jSite bookmark.
 * Fix JPEG filter omitting extension code.
 * Fix a bug that prevented Sone from inserting updates when physical
   security was set high enough.

Changes in Freemail:
 * Add German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Portuguese, and
   Simplified Chinese translations.
 * Update French and Norwegian translations.
 * Fix a bug that prevented working with LCWoT.
 * Fix labelling SMTP bind address configuration option as IMAP.

Changes in FlogHelper:
 * Add Italian and Traditional Chinese translations.
 * Update French and German translations.

Changes in KeyUtils:
 * Add French, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese
   translations.

Changes in JSTUN:
 * Update STUN server list.

Thank you for using Freenet!

- Steve Dougherty

Try opening Firefox (ideally in privacy mode) and going to the same page
the Freenet launcher opens Google Chrome to by copying and pasting the
URL into the address bar. The Freenet launcher is not doing anything
special - it is intended as a convenient way to open the main page.

It would certainly be helpful to be able to set which browser the
launcher uses, but no one has written support for doing that yet.

 Yes, that's my idea, to give as much as disk space as possible. I make
 the question because I thought it could be a relationship between the
 amount of disk space and the consumption of RAM (for example 40 GiB
 not recommended dor 512 MiB of RAM).
There is, yes. The setup wizard will use this when recommending the
default store size when you install.

Technically: 4 bytes per slot in RAM, three slots for ~ each 35KB
(32KB+~300 bytes + 1K + 1K + 1K).

 Thanks again.

Check your wrapper.log in case it mentions a reason for the 378
rejections. And if not, enable logging in the settings, which will be
dumped into timestamped files in the log/ subdirectory.

Thanks Dennis,

I am getting a lot of:

And a few:

However, I am running 1459.

That should be enough. I run it with 300 or 400 megs. Of course,
that'll only leave you with about 100 for the rest of your daemons,
which should be enough if you don't run a graphical environment (X) or
any other large processes.

OK, thanks a lot. Yes I don't run a graphical enviroment, and it will be
a Freenet dedicated server, so no other large processes.

Any suggestions in the amount of disk space destinated to Freenet?

Thanks in advance.

[freenet-support] Connecting to Freenet

2014-02-18 Thread Nicholas Kovich
I am running Mac OS X Mavericks. I cannot get Freenet to run by clicking the
freenet.jar file, so I am opening Freenet within the terminal via the command
./run.sh start. It works, the jar file opens and Freenet connects for about
30 seconds until it shuts down. I cannot keep Freenet running for more than a
minute. It just times out. The following is what Terminal says:

Macintosh:~ nicholaskovich$ cd /Applications/Freenet
Macintosh:Freenet nicholaskovich$ ./run.sh start
Latest JVM is /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home
Starting Freenet 0.7...
Macintosh:Freenet nicholaskovich$

I would greatly appreciate any help!

Probably it comes from one of the super-duker security on windows, an
anti-V or like. so you may just for the time of the installation get
those off, of course if you had downloaded the freenet install from
source (if, for that time you fear any external Virus attack _that
exist_ on those systems) you can just unconnect also from the web just
for the time of the install… it probably will work then. when it would
be installed, nothing will react anymore.
It acts the same with keygens.exe that will always start a very strong
alarm (and the keygens files are deleted instantly!), and there also,
one has to stop any antiVirus for a while. I always wondered if MS
wouldn't always keep those weekness to virusses as an agreement with
anti-V programs and making then more money out of it.;-) (always look
to whom the crime brings benefits!)

The terminal output you mention is the same as that when starting
Freenet successfully. Do I understand correctly that Freenet is running
and you can open http://127.0.0.1: in a web browser and interact
with Freenet? Were you able to complete the first run setup / wizard in
the browser? I wonder if there are any details about why it stops
running - can you tell us what is in the file wrapper.log in the
directory Freenet is installed to?

[freenet-support] Attempting to update to build 1459

2014-01-22 Thread Lance Hathaway
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

My Freenet node is attempting to auto-update from build 1458 to build
1459, but it's not working so well.

I'm running this on Ubuntu 12.04.4, 64 bit, using Sun Java 7u51. I
used the new_installer_offline.jar file to install 1458 last week, and
my node has been running well since then.

Right now, it's trying to update to build 1459. It seems to fetch the
new version, and it auto-restarts to load the new version...except it
keeps reloading 1458. Then it detects the new version, fetches it,
restarts...and goes back to 1458 again.

I haven't tried the update.sh script to manually update the
installation yet. I could do so, but if there's an issue with
auto-update (whether it's a bug or just a quirk due to the way I
installed my node), I'd like to try and figure it out before I just go
manual all the time.

Can anybody offer some pointers or other assistance? I'd greatly
appreciate it!

I've looked at my wrapper.log file, but I'm not sure what it's telling

and there are no errors when it writes the update files out to
filesystem. But when it restarts, 1458 loads again.

Are there certain lines in the log file that would be useful for

log file, but I don't want to overload the list with too much detail.

Look at your wrapper.conf file
iirc it alternates which .jar file is used. Freenet.jar vs freenet-new.jar or
something like that. Make sure the filename matches the newer version you want
to load.

My wrapper.conf lists freenet.jar.new, but it still loads version
1458. freenet.jar.new is the most recent file. freenet.jar is a
symlink to freenet-stable-latest.jar, which has a date of Jan. 6 (the
1458 release that I originally installed).

[freenet-support] Freenet 0.7.5 build 1459 released

2014-01-20 Thread Steve Dougherty
Freenet 0.7.5 build 1459 is now available. Freenet will require Java 7
or higher in a future update. Java 6 has been at End of Life since
February 2013, which means it does not receive security updates. [0]
There will be an alert warning people to upgrade before this happens.

We now have a code signing certificate, so the Java-based installer for
Mac OS X and Linux is signed, which will make it easier to run. In
future releases more things will be signed.

In this release:

 * Fix configuration page partially allowing unsupported large bandwidth
limits. (1 GBps or higher)
 * Translation updates from Transifex.
 * Network-level changes.
 * Links to release notes and developer details are now to a specific
version instead of just the latest.

Thank you for using Freenet!

[freenet-support] Ideas about Maidsafe

2014-01-15 Thread Dennis New
I recently heard[3] of a very similar project Maidsafe[1], which seems
to function strikingly similarly to Freenet, although they seem to
guarantee private (distributed) storage space. (I also heard Tahoe-LAFS
[2]+i2p mentioned, which seems functionally very similar to Maidsafe.)
What are your thoughts on these projects? Are they complementary, or
misguided?

I can understand the usefulness of a distributed personal storage
filesystem, but if they are publically available, aren't they trivial
to cripple with junk data?

What happens when you try to delete it? It would be interesting to see
if wrapper.log would say anything interesting, or your log files (if
you enable error logging.)

It's possible it's a good ol' node.db4o corruption, so you can try
(temporarily) moving/renaming that file (which will get rid of your
queues), and try re-downloading it.

It's worth noting that we know this is a problem, we know it's awful,
and the only person (Matthew) practically capable of replacing it is
busy at university. My understanding is he plans to finally replace db4o
with a more robust flat file setup this summer.

You can download the installer directly instead of using Java Web Start.
See the download instructions for Linux. [0] If you'd rather not use the

there might be a way to run it with Java by clicking it or checking the

Maybe your problem is of compatibility with your Mac version been rather
old… Mac Leopard 10.5.8 was a very excellent system 10 years ago, but
may not support the more recent appsor even java updates…
After Leopard, You had Snow leopard 10.6, Lion 10.7, Mountain Lion 10.8,
and now, Mavericks 10.9. If your hardware doesn't support these, I think
you'll have to chose an older version of freenet (they all work fine on
any of those systems since I've been using them years ago.
I've just finished to install the latest Freenet from the link given
above, and it worked fine… of course I had to go to the System
preferences to unblock the install of an unknown app. (Apple security)…
there is also a shortkey but I forgot it. Anyway you've got to give your
admin PW.

Good luck

In this release:

 * The update notification and statistics pages link to the release
   announcement and developer details.
 * More French and Italian translation thanks to volunteers on
   Transifex. [1] The French translation has complete coverage!
 * Network-level changes thanks to Quadrocube.
 * New Freenet installations are portable: they can run without changes
   after being moved between directories. To make an existing
   installation portable shut down Freenet and edit freenet.ini to make
   these paths relative:
   * fproxy.CSSOverride (if one is specified)
   * node.masterKeyFile
   * node.downloadsDir
   * node.install.userDir
   * node.install.tempDir
   * node.install.pluginDir
   * node.install.persistentTempDir
   * node.install.cfgDir
   * node.install.runDir
   * node.install.nodeDir
   * node.install.storeDir
   * node.install.pluginStoresDir
 * On January 14th Oracle will deploy a new version of Java which
   requires code signatures from a trusted certificate authority to
   use JNLP. [2] Freenet uses JNLP to launch the Linux and Mac
   installers. We currently use self-signed certificates, which will
   stop working. We are in the process of getting a trusted certificate.

Thank you for using Freenet!

Re: [freenet-support] Freenet on Raspberry pi

2013-12-14 Thread Steve Dougherty

 I figured this out, in case anyone else needs a solution in the future.
 The issue was caused by the precompiled Java Service Wrapper not
 supporting the specific ARM architecture on the Pi.

Good to hear you got it working!

 Here's the steps I took that rectified the issue (and other issues along
 the way):

 1. Install Oracle's JDK instead of openjdk/jre (you'll need the jdk for
 later steps)
 2. Install ant
 2. Download the latest Java Service Wrapper source from
 http://sourceforge.net/projects/wrapper/files/wrapper_src/
 3. Set your environment's $JAVA_HOME and $ANT_HOME to the locations of
 jdk and ant. If you mess those up, the wrapper compiler will tell you.
 4. Compile the wrapper (run build32.sh)
 5. Copy the generated wrapper executable in the bin directory to the
 wrapper dir in Freenet, replacing the current wrapper-linux-armhf-32
 exec in Freenet's bin

As you may have guessed from an ARM wrapper binary already being there,
this was supposed to work without additional effort. Do you have ideas
as to what's wrong with the ARM binary that's deployed with Freenet? How
can we fix it?

 6. Copy the .so file from the lib dir into Freenet's lib as
 libwrapper-linux-armhf-32.so
 7. Finally, jar up the org dir in the classes dir - jar cf wrapper.jar org.
 Copy the new wrapper.jar file into Freenet's dir.

 I *think* you can skip the last step if you compile the same version of
 the wrapper as the one used in Freenet. I think currently it's 3.5.20
 while the latest wrapper is 3.5.23.

 And finally, enjoy the perpetually high load on your pi while freenet is
 running :).
 I'm not sure how practical this is in the long run but it was fun trying
 to get it to work.

[freenet-support] Computer Problems.

2013-11-20 Thread Thomas White
I recently installed Freenet but I am having problems with the computer
frequently 'Reloading'.I then 'Uninstalled' Freenet' but also I now
receive a warning sign on startup that ''Frenet Tray is unable to find
 Installid.Dat'' and now 'Error 10050'

This also advises me to 'Uninstall' and then 'Reinstall' however when I
try to Install Freenet again I am advised that is already Installed.

I am now in the position that I cannot 'Uninstall' the old programme nor
Install a new one.

Please Help.

Regards,   T.White.

[freenet-support] OOM on start-up

2013-11-11 Thread Signal 11
Hi,
I have trouble in installing KeepAlive plugin.
It causes java.lang.OutOfMemoryError : unable to create new native Thread
when installing, and on every start-up after the installation.
I tried setting wrapper.java.additional.4=-Xss128k, decreasing
node.load.threadLimit,
increasing wrapper.java.maxmemory, ulimit -u 4096, but all of them did not work.

I noticed that CPU usage got very high ( 100% on C2D E8400) temporarily
for the several seconds after start up, and lots of threads ( 300) were
created,
even if I removed KeepAlive plugin.
After booting up successfully, threads count decreases under 100.
I ran jstack during the high CPU usage period, which showed 397 threads.
I suspect this massive thread creation is the cause of KeepAlive installation
problem.
So my question is,
Is it normal that so many threads are created beyond node.load.threadLimit on
start-up?
and if so, how can I increase the maximum number of threads without OOM?

regards,
s11

Just to clarify, your node works fine, until you try using the
KeepAlive plugin?

 I tried setting wrapper.java.additional.4=-Xss128k, decreasing

What did you set maxmemory to?

I think high CPU within the first minute or so is normal.

Somewhere in freenet's Stats pages is a table of the running threads.
Perhaps you can look for clues there, or post that table here?

For Linux, uninstall by deleting directory Freenet is installed to and
removing the crontab entry. (see crontab -e)

Which operating system are you using?

And, are you sure you have the right program? Firstly, there is no
version 7.4, I'm not even sure if there was a 0.7.4, but even if there
was, you almost certainly weren't able to connect to the main network.
