[talk-ph] POI mapping for really non-mapping people
I was asked to do some mapping workshop for a bunch of really non-mapping people. What they want is to map some cultural POIs within their city and produce a big paper map out of it. Of course, I can teach them some FOSS GIS incantations, but that would make the 2-3 hour long workshop over-complicated. OSM comes to mind, not only they can use our data as a basemap, they can even improve the data by adding more POIs. Ergo, I need your advice. Basic workshop goal is to teach them some neogeography [1] ninja moves to make a simple webmap of cultural artifacts within their city. I need some purely online tools on the following: basemap editing - OSM and potlatch geocoding photos - flickr and its geocoding tool creating KML points purely on the webpage using osm map- no idea how creating the webmap with points KML overlay - openlayers or geocommons print the big map including the POI overlays [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neogeography -- cheers, maning -- Freedom is still the most radical idea of all -N.Branden wiki: http://esambale.wikispaces.com/ blog: http://epsg4253.wordpress.com/ -- ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph
Re: [talk-ph] sanity check for maintaining GPS tracks
Hi, For the cleaning part, I use GPSBabel to: 1. remove low hdop/vdop (and low satellites) points 2. remove close points (1m) due to traffic-lights, parking-pauses to reduce overall file-size. 3. remove areas I often go or park to avoid clouds.
[OSM-talk] Contour lines
Hi all, Is there a WMS layer or other data source for contour lines? I am improving the outline of the water in a reservoir. I have checked Yahoo! aerials to see the nominal area of the reservoir and I have chosen a particular contour line on OSM Cycle Map to trace along with Potlatch. This will give a pleasing representation of the area covered by the water. Unfortunately, the reservoir is already partially rendered on OSM Cycle Map so it, and other features, obscure some of the contour lines. Would it be useful to have a 'topolines only' map? It wouldn't have to have features on it (as it can be switched in and out in Potlatch and JOSM), and it doesn't have to be rendered very often. In this case I am happy with using the OSM Cycle Map as a background layer for tracing, especially as the new water shape is generally bigger than the old shape. If the new shape was smaller, or badly drawn, or in the wrong place then I would not be able to see the contours underneath it on the OSM Cycle Map. Comments please (esp. easier/better ideas), Thanks, Andrew ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

My goodness! Care to estimate the accuracy of the Yahoo! aerials? In this region they are a bit fuzzy, and not very well aligned with WGS84. My GPS accuracy (reported by the device itself) is at best 4m, but in mountainous regions or in cities it is 5m or 6m at best, often worse. How accurate is my mouse when I click on a pixel? Visually I am interpolating the (inaccurate) GPS trace to get a smooth, pleasing curve or shape. Although we strive for accuracy you have to remember we are not surveying, we are making a map; there is a difference. In the case of the reservoir, the contour lines line up remarkably well with other map features (which were recorded independently of the contours, but plotted together to make the OSM cycle map). Rivers follow gullys, roads snake appropriately over dense contour lines, etc., so I see no reason not to use them. Furthermore, the reservoir level changes throughout the year, depending on the weather. Yahoo! may have snapped a picture of the average level, or a minimum. If I go there with my GPS I cannot get to the water's edge- it's too dangerous, so I have to estimate where the waterline would be based on my (inaccurate) GPS and (inaccurate) memory and notes. The previous version of the reservoir is jagged and rough- a few points clicked around the perimeter. The body of water is about 16km long. I wish to make the reservoir outline better. I cannot get an aerial of the reservoir when full. I cannot walk around the water's edge. I don't have an RC model speedboat with my GPS on it (yes, I thought about it) so I will use the next best thing at my disposal. SRTM contours. The next guy that comes along will improve it, as I have done, and as we all do. Having said that, I have just compared my changes with Google aerials, Google Maps, and another two mapping providers. They are all different, but mine is a little high, so I am going to choose the next lowest contour. Niklas, I think what Maning meant was how to clean the track itself, sometimes you have very long lines (in the middle or the end of the track) that do not represent the track that you droved or walked. At first this crazy lines will not be a problem, but eventually you will press the g key in Potlatch for a certain area and it will show just too many of those lines to distinguish the good ones. An example of those crazy lines here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Zambelli%20Limitada/traces/664979 Is there an application that someone can recommend to manually clean the track before uploading it to OSM? Hopefully this isn't too off-topic for the list. If it is, sorry. I use a Palm Pre for recording GPS traces. Once it's warmed up, it normally reports an accuracy of 3 meters, which seems to fit reasonably with what I've seen when overlaying my traces on the Yahoo WMS tiles (although sometimes traces where I was driving in the same place at different times can diverge by 4 to 5 meters). What I'm curious about is how well the Pre's accuracy compares to other GPS units. I've read that GPS units with WAAS (for I am in the US) can get results with less than one meter of imprecision, but in a survey of GPS unit accuracy online I only found reports of 3 meters or less. Re: [OSM-talk] What's good accuracy for a GPS unit?
Augmentation of GPS can be done in various ways depending on the type of unit you have, wether you have access to paid subscription augmentation or only free systems, and where you are. A smaller handheld unit generally have lesser accuracy compared with a larger unit. Higher latitude (60 degree N/S) have generally higher accuracy than lower latitude (closer to equator) Paid subscription augmentation such as Fugro Inmarsat, Fugro Spotbeam, HP/XP/G2, Veripos, etc. generally have a much higher degree of correction, therefor more accurate than free services such as IALA, SBAS (common term for WAAS, EGNOS, etc). Terms of accuracy also depends on what you are going to use the unit for, I am working in the offshore industry, where large expensive units with several augmentation systems are used to install large structures on the seabed with centimeter accuracy, where we aim to have an HDOP and EPE as low as possible, I have observed all the way to EPE of 0.1, while a simple car navigation with snap to road function can be more than happy with HDOP of 2 (which would be totally rejected by my contractors). The offshore industry is probably the most difficult consumer of position data, so comparing personal units to our standards is probably a bad idea, but if you have a unit that give you a HDOP of less than 2 than you probably are covered. HDOP = Horizontal Dilution of Position (generally meaning that more than 95% of the measured positions are within a circle with HDOP meter in radius, though some units might use another % for the same) You will probably not find any information about EPE on your units, that is a highly technical term involving more factors such as satellite constellation, number of corrections, wether or not both L1 and L2 signal is corrected, how close to the horizon you allow the unit to read satellites, etc. Sometimes accuracy is measured in %, this is only confusing, do not look at this number. brgds Aun Johnsen On 13/04/2010, at 17:47, Phil!
Irgendein rechtliches Schlupfloch oder so was.
