That should work, but as you have only one system that deletes

The above is appended to the bottom of every message passed through
the TB lists. Clicking that link will take you to the page
containing all the information you need to manage a subscription on
the TB lists.

Or, with a message from one of the TB lists selected, you may click
on the 'Specials' menu item and choose one of the options from the
'Mailing List' sub-menu.

When leaving the list, don't forget to reply to the confirmation
request from the list server. Your departure will not complete

Go in the IMAP account properties, navigate to the 'Mail Management'
options and ensure that the you enable the options under 'Automatically
connect to the server' 'at startup', 'For managing folders', 'When
account is selected', and 'By any command'.

Clicking on each folder should show their content, since selecting each
folder will lead to a header synchronisation provided the connection
with the server has been successfully established.

If you're not seeing the folder's content then it may be a problem with
TB! and your server.

When I click on Get new mail (or Connect to Server), I get the
Connection Center; but no activity, no messsages, no downloading.
Then it time out. [I logged onto its webmail; and there are a few
messages there.]

In Manage IMAP Folders, for the Inbox, I have a check mark in
Subscribe; and do not synchronize.
Even if 'do not synchronize' is ticked, selecting the Inbox will still
lead to a header sync. The synchronizing options there are for
unattended, automatic syncs without the folder being selected.

What do you mean no option to search. You have all searching options at
your disposal.

The search dialog doesn't seem to work since there's no progress bar to
look at and it always claims the search is complete. However, if you
wait, the matching messages eventually appear. Uncomfortable interface
issues, I grant you.

The alt-click and quick searching also work.

Actually, no. It'll just work, but it wouldn't be as fast as if you had
all message bodies locally cached.

The alt-click and quick searching also work.
How to use those?
Hold down the alt button while clicking on any item in the message
list. TB! will list all messages containing the same message list
element.
So if you wish to see all messages from me, just hold down the alt
button and click on my name in the message list. You can do the same
for message subject, and the various flags. You may wish to see all
messages with attachments. Just alt-click on the attachment icon in a
message containing an attachment. It's a great feature.

The quick search works by just typing in the message list field, the
string that you're searching for. The quick search will do only message
list searches. Not whole message searches.

Hmmm. Current TB! IMAP is such that I really can't speak with
confidence about what you should be experiencing. It may very well be
that the search isn't working for you since, for message body searches,
TB! queries the server and the search is done on the server. The
results are then sent back to TB!. This why the search dialog just sits
there claiming the search was done and no matches found. You wait and
then the matches suddenly appear.

Funny too is, that i can't quoute mails with F4, i only get a blank

Do you first select what it is you wish to quote? F4 will quote only
what you select. If nothing is selected, nothing is quoted. Of course,
you very likely already know this and are just pointing out erratic
behaviour on your system.

To get the quick search to work you first have to select a message in
the list. In other words your main highlight has to be in the list
area and not on the message itself or in the folder list.

Once it is there if you start typing a box should pop up with the
letter you just typed. The first message to match this letter will now
be highlighted. As you continue typing the message selected will
change to match what you are typing. In the latest beta, once the
selection you are trying to find is typed if you push enter you will
get a list of all matches only (much like the Alt+click method).

For IMAP, you don't need to cache mail bodies to search. You shouldn't
have to do that. ThunderBird doesn't cache mail bodies for searching.
It queries the server. Same for Mulberry, the client I'm currently
using most often.

If you have a relatively slow connection, you couldn't do searches if
you had to cache everything locally for searching.

I've never used Outlook, so I can't speak for it.

This is interesting. Does your IMAP machine run all the time and
constantly download messages or do you have to tell it do it manually?
My working machine which happens to run MDaemon Pro, my IMAP server
software, is always running yes. Hence, it doesn't have to be installed
on a dedicated machine, though that is more desirable (no space for
me). MDaemon is always running and I ignore it most times. It polls my
remote POP accounts at intervals and downloads them to a local account
which I manage using IMAP.

I'm a little reluctant to try this right now with IMAP in the state
its in (in The Bat!).
I can understand this. I guess it's a decision one has to make, i.e.,
which is more important TB!, or the choice of protocol. For me,
it's the choice of protocol. I found it a bitter situation having to
put TB! aside as my main client, especially after so many years of
being utterly satisfied with it and having no interest in other
clients. It's still *the* POP client to use by a comfortable margin.

However, if I were to do things again, I'd have started using IMAP
earlier! It is *the* way to go when managing the same mail from
multiple machines.

The current way I do things is working, but I was just wondering why I
didn't seem to get the results I was after. As Roelof said, I can
always delete the messages with Mail Dispatcher, which I love BTW.
Ok. Good luck with it.
My main problem with your method is the message flagging.
When you move from one location to another, all the mail you read in
the previous location will be downloaded and marked unread at the new
location. It is often difficult to find the really new mail. Sometimes
it's a matter of hundreds of messages to sift through with about half
really unread. With IMAP, there are no such issues. Each location gives
the current account status in all respects. It's as if you were always
working at each location. This is fundamental, and for me, though I
miss them, none of TB!'s specialized features will make me do without
these basic benefits offered by the IMAP protocol when managing the
same accounts from multiple machines.

You're right. Neither Thunderbird nor Outlook do cache. It seems my
provider doesn't offer a server-search, so my only way to search are
message headers. As for bandwith: i use a 2mbit line, so that shouldn't be
the bottleneck, i guess.

Gotta try out the newer version you mentioned...

Don't be. I'm the one confused. You're right!!! Sorry. :)
IMAP is always changing. It's like a sinus wave of improvements and
setbacks.

I'd say IMAP was at a peak with the beta version 3.0.2.8.
It then took a steep dip in reliability with the introduction of
multiple server connection support with v3.0.2.10 .

Yes I have been following your trials and tribulations with IMAP and
miss your succinct explanations.

AM Ok. Good luck with it.

My big problem at home is currently my inability to send replies or
attachments. The only thing I changed, I think, is that I added a
router. When I reply, if the message is a little too big, it times out
and the message does not get sent.

When I say a little too big, I'm talking the last message I sent to
you would not go and I had to recreate the message in webmail, hence
the reason it is not threaded properly. My guess is this message is
already too big and I will have to do the same. If I had cut
everything you said and just said thank you it probably would have
gone.

Any ideas. Anyone.

I was right, it did not send. This is now coming from webmail and will not
thread properly in pre alpha/beta versions. Ironically, and much to Miguel's
chagrin, this will probably thread in the alpha/beta versions because of the
much hated thread by Reference/Subject capability. :)

That depends on the throughput your IMAP server allows. Bandwidth
throttling may be there. However, if you are getting a 2Mbit connection
then it shouldn't be a problem for you to retrieve all message bodies
to cache for searching.

Yes. An MDaemon Pro license for 6 user accounts is US$330. However,
it's as good as they come.

OTOH, there's Mercury/32 that could be used. It has its IMAP server as

TB! IMAP is built on the legacy of TB!'s POP support. As a result there
are many issues like this one. Filtering and sound alerts are other
aspects that suffer quirky or erratic functionality for IMAP.

There may be a non-printable character in the email address, and
whenever you try to send him a message, TB autocompletes. So, try
this:

Open a New Message window, type the full address manually (not
allowing auto-complete) and send him a test message.
