Re: [tw] Would this group be better on WhatsApp?

2017-11-16 Thread Lost Admin
In my humble opinion, to get what TT wants, what this group needs is proper
forums instead of Google's attempt to replace nntp. We also probably need a
wiki that can be edited by mutliple people.

Forums would allow categorization of discussions easier.

A wiki with multiple editors would allow different people to manage
different aspects of documentation such as end-user guides, developer
guides, dedicated guides to each of the 20 or so savers, etc.

But to do the above would require funding for hosting.

Default mechanism works everywhere and requires no set-up.

Maybe what is needed is a grid of techniques vs. abilities to help people
decide which approach is best for them.

Or a helper with a series of drop-downs (net-based, no-net, android,
i-device, complexity)

2017-11-16 Thread Diego Mesa
Hey all,

With this thread, and the related Yearning for ONE method:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/TiddlyWiki/19LF5KynLAc

I definitely think TiddlyWiki would benefit immensely from well thought out
"New User Experience" that "Just Works Out of the Box". I have 100% drunk
the koolaid when it comes to TW. But I had a very hard time explaining it
to someone else, when it came to "Oh no actually you have to either save
like this, or like that, or, yeah it could be one file, or yeah you could
install a plugin for that, or, etc etc etc"

I think this community can try to develop sort of an EverNote-likeish-clone
that just come prepackaged, is easy to explain and use. What do you guys
think?

I think my "feel" here comes from pretending to be a newbie on the block.

It really is daunting to have TOO MANY options without some kind of

I think you are right that some kind of table or decision tree could help.

Re: [tw] Re: [TW5] Plugins Updated: ToDoNow and Listreveal

2017-11-16 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
For what it's worth, here's the code I insert into the filter plugin to
allow me to have selectable filters:

<$select tiddler="$:/temp/tdn/user-filter" default='General Usage'>
<$list filter='[tag[Filter]sort[title]]'>
<$view field='caption'/>

It gets inserted below <$vars uf=...

Each filter tiddler is tagged 'Filter', has a caption field to describe it,
and the filter content goes in the text field.

My flow is that usually first thing in the morning I reset used tiddlers,
check items due for the day, and use various filters to look at things that
are in waiting mode and move them into the task list for the day. Some
tasks that are for late in the day are given a priority for later, and
hidden away until needed. Having a drop-down filter makes this moving back
and forth simpler.

2017-11-16 Thread @TiddlyTweeter
Ciao cari Arkady & Thomas,

I have been using Thomas' ToDoNow a long time. I'm still using it. It works.

Why do I like it? Honed Minimalism. GTD systems got OVER-complex for one
person only able to do one thing at a time. Thomas went back to HIS basics
and found something workable.

It is a very, very good PERSONAL To Do System. It is NOT a collaborative
PROJECT Manager and was never meant to be one. It has limited aims but
within those its really stellar.

Regarding hiding stuff you don't want to see the Custom Filter mechanism
that goes a long way to helping you with that but if its not enough, as
Thomas suggests, I'd look at CARDO.

Best wishes
Josiah

Re: [tw] Re: [TW5] Plugins Updated: ToDoNow and Listreveal

2017-11-16 Thread Thomas Elmiger
Hi Arkady

Thank you very much for writing down all these interesting thoughts and
linking to relevant concepts! And sorry for the long time it took me to
write an answer.

Have you tried http://cardo.wiki/ ? It is one of the most feature rich
TW-based solutions I know of.

Maybe GTD is an acronym aiming too high for my simple tool. I have no plans
to extend it any further at the moment and I wanted to keep it simple and
intuitive even for beginners from the very beginning. Something between
simple ToDo lists and real GTD systems was missing in my eyes, so I built
it. If I would start today I would look at the trello-ish solutions as
alternatives.

Concerning your questions:

To hide items you won’t or can’t work on, you can use tags or priorities. A
simple tag filter is always present, but there is also a personal filter
you could use to filter out certain priorities. Have a look at the
user-filter tab of the plugin, you will find filter examples there.

I did not have the time to try, but I am pretty sure it would be possible
to eliminate tasks due more than a given number of days from now this way.

For recurring tasks I personally just set a new date when one is done, this
way I can take weekends and local holidays into account. By the way: If you
check done, reactivate the task and check done again, both done-dates are
registered in the tiddler.

Last but not least: No, I do no intend to add more features. My ambition is
to improve existing features and usability. Feel free to add all the
features you like and please keep me updated if you do so.

All the best and happy do-ing!
Thomas

Yea, but my first 3 clickable links in the first post are links to
documentation and a video instruction.
I really don't know, how to provide better info, than let a user watch, how

If this ins't enough info, I really don't know, what more can be done.

I know, that the video needs to be refined, once the final version is out.

That’s actually what TiddlyDesktop is, except that it uses the older nw.js

Ciao Jeremy

Thanks for the reply.

I was being more prodding than helpful.

FRANKLY, though *GG is looking worse and worse over time*.

Our major problem is it CANNOT cope with the sheer complexity of TW as it
evolves.

Right now is a very good phase in TW's history to know that, to see that
clearly.

I think our GG approach is seriously BLUNTING (a) its use; (b)
understanding of it.

The Sixteen Plus ways of saving TW -- well you are NOT gonna be able to
find all those on Google. Yeah TW .com gives access but TO a disorganised
mess.

Can't we do better?

But they DO NOT need to read the thread.

What they NEED is direct links to INSTRUCTIONS of what to do to get

Discussion should NEVER come first IMO when the aim is ACTIVATING SIMPLE

[tw] Re: Upgrading TW5 on TiddlySpot

2017-11-16 Thread AndrewMc
I have entered my correct wiki name and password in the TiddlySpot Saver
settings and then tried multiple times to save but just cannot save my
upgraded TW to TiddlySpot.
After opening the TW on TiddlySpot, I saved a local copy (by removing the
password). After opening the local copy, I was also unable to save this
version back to TiddlySpot.
I am using Firefox 57 on Ubuntu 16.04.

[tw] Comments re TiddlyDesktop and External Attachments Plugin

2017-11-16 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
I was interested in trying TiddlyDesktop again now that it had the External
Attachments Plugin (EAP).

*Installing*:

The only instructions are in the video, which are aimed at mac users. I
unzipped the file and loaded it into a directory reserved for apps without
a regular install.

There is no indication which file you are supposed to run. Nothing that
starts with "tiddlydesktop." which is what you would expect. I guessed that
you invoke it with NW.exe -- Is this right?

After running, not understanding I added a file folder that contains TW
files. Then I realized that this wasn't what was meant, and discovered that
the Remove button doesn't actually work. I think it may be refusing to work
because the folder has no data to provide a title. I eventually used the
advanced option to find the tiddler that represented the folder and then
delete it.

Next I loaded an empty 5.1.15 tw and then used the plugin manager to
download the EAP. I saved and reloaded the TW. I then dragged an image
into the frame. The entire image flooded the frame rather than offering to
import. The TW was no longer accessible and I was not able to navigate
backwards to the TW. I closed the frame and tried to use the "open" button
back in the desktop manager. It would not open.

So, I closed the entire TiddlyDeskTop app and attempted to restart it. It
wouldn't restart. I used my Windows task manager to find the nw.exe process
and killed it. After that I could restart it.

*Summary*:

* No windows-friendly instructions how to launch
* Removing entrees doesn't always work
* External Attachments Plugin doesn't work
* Dragging in an image will make your TW inaccessible
* App doesn't shut itself down completely on closing requiring manual kill

Thanks!
Mark

Re: [tw] Comments re TiddlyDesktop and External Attachments Plugin

2017-11-16 Thread Jeremy Ruston
Hi Mark

I’ll investigate what’s happened, but in the meantime you should be able to
recover by deleting the data folder for TiddlyDesktop. In Windows, I think
it’ll be something like:

c:\users\yourname\AppData\Local\TiddlyDesktop

I think what went wrong with your drag and drop might be that by dragging to
the blank bottom area of the TW window you won’t trigger the drop dialogue.
Move around until you see the green bar before you release the mouse. (This bug
isn’t TiddlyDesktop specific, and can happen in ordinary browsers too).

Best wishes

Jeremy

Re: [tw] Comments re TiddlyDesktop and External Attachments Plugin

2017-11-16 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
Dragging and dropping exactly on the green bar still results in the image
taking over the screen and inability to access the original TW.

Once I close TiddlyDeskTop and end the nw.exe process and restart, I can
then re-open the original TW5 file -- but no image has been added.

In an older 5.1.14 file, without the plugin, dropping exactly on the green
bar imports the image -- but as binary which of course is not what is
wanted.

Thanks!

[tw] TiddlyDesktop

2017-11-16 Thread PaulT
After taking some time off from using Tiddlywiki (classic) I needed to use
it again. I installed TiddlyDesktop 0.0.9 and launched my work which is
saved on a local drive. Everything looked fine till I reloaded the file.
Even though I'd made changes and it said they had been saved, it was the
original unchanged file. I've played with it a bit and in the TiddlyDesktop
everything looks normal, says it is saving, knows the right location, but
nothing is saved. I've even searched all of my hard disks looking for any
file created today. But nothing looks like it could be the saved TW.

Furicle,

*I feel your pain. Although I am happy using multiple methods to save and

*the fact is the information is not clearly **available** for a **newcomer

*All solutions are somewhat **sensitive** in some way often **requiring** a

*In defence of the **community, a concerted effort has being made to

Re: [tw] Would this group be better on WhatsApp?

2017-11-16 Thread TonyM
Josiah,

I would host for free, or a sponsor add.

I have being professionally involved in growing an online community from
2,000 to around 45,000 in enterprise social, yammer

I would consider something like Yammer, myself which is both a chat,
microblog and long running conversation platform, file and groups, mentions
etc... however any new platform needs every member to adopt.
I may even be in a position to offer a yammer network as well.

The trick is to propose an alternative and invite select people to
participate, building a team of proponents.

They will have to champion adoption and initially mine existing channels to
republish content until economies of scale and content levels make it self
sustaining.

Not withstanding this we should maximise the use of tiddlywiki itself,
"drink out own campaign" (nicer than dog food)

Regards
Tony

[tw] Re: TiddlyDesktop

2017-11-16 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
Since I was already doing tests today on TiddlyDesktop, I downloaded a
brand new classic and tested it. It seemed to actually save tiddler changes.

Just speculation -- I wonder if you have an older TWC that isn't saving
with the new TD? One way to test would be to download a new empty TWC and
see if you can get that to save.

Good luck,

I'll wait a bit on PMario getting beyond the Telegram which died in 1996 as

I think your sentiment is spot-on.

Its a bit of a insolvable issue as there is NO dedicated "Make It Simple
For Newbies" Department. The problem is that WITHIN the TW Community
(mainly here) there is great concern to enable new methods of saving. And
its SOLVED a read important issue & is (right now) being refined even
further.

Its coming out in a really GOOD place with many more options than before.
Like this ...

HOWEVER for a newbie it can be a NIGHTMARE being confronted with so many
options the implications of which, at ground zero, they can't possible know
at the start. In addition they are not all so well documented--they rely a
lot on IMPLICIT knowledge that is quite technical.

Some way of NAVIGATING one's way to a MINIMAL solution would help.

BUT, on the whole the standard TiddlyWiki has an IMPLYING on SAVING that
you are prepared to dabble in quite a lot of D.I.Y., I think

Best wishes

[tw] Upgrading TW5 on TiddlySpot

2017-11-16 Thread AndrewMc
Hi All

I have a TW hosted on TiddlySpot that uses TW version 5.1.14. Now that
version 5.1.15 has been released, I would like to upgrade.
I have followed the instructions at https://tiddlywiki.com/#Upgrading and
now have an upgraded version of the TW saved on my local drive.

My problem is, how do I get my upgraded local TW onto TiddlySpot?
Or, can I avoid creating a local file and somehow upgrade TW on TiddlySpot
directly?

Cheers

5.14 came out with several notable improvements especially when it comes to
drag and drop. Naturally it created a wealth of opportunities.

It also goes on to prove that TW5 can act as a good backbone for dedicated

teuxdeux clone in TW5.

[tw] Re: Presenting my simple mobile layout...

2017-11-16 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
Hello JD,

It's looking very nice!

On my aging tablet, there seems to be a bug. I have it on the highest font
level. When I press the "full-screen" button, the scrolling works great and
I no longer have that annoying flicker at the top as the url bar scrolls
down. BUT -- I can't change back by hitting the full-screen button again.
All the buttons on the bottom seem to be turned off except save and new
tiddler. If I save and then scroll down a little a blank opens at the top
of the screen and then I can activate the full-screen button.

Is there any possibility you could add one more level of font-increase? (He
says groping around the desk for a pair of glasses that was just there a
minute ago...)

Thanks!
Mark

Sorry for not having been more precise: I get that warning editing the
TiddlyMap file within

TiddlyDesktop.app
(on a macbook air), but if I open it using Tiddly Drive the warning does
not appear

.
*Maybe TiddlyDesktop is not well suited for editing TiddlyMap files?*

Thank you!

Re: [tw] Re: TiddlyMap on desktop: editor not displayed in mobile mode

2017-11-16 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
I don't know much about Macs, and especially how TiddlyDesktop operates
with them.

If you download a new TW file (because I don't want to endanger your
existing work), then you can import the attached file into that new TW.
Then SAVE and RELOAD.

Then In TiddlyDesktop open a tiddler in that new TW and create macro
<> and then preview it.

This should tell you what TiddlyDesktop thinks your user agent is. It might
help in tweaking TD or maps. Might. Maybe. Possibly. ;-)

I would be curious what it reports.

Good luck!
Mark

[tw] Re: TiddlyMap on desktop: editor not displayed in mobile mode

2017-11-16 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
In my very brief look at the code, it appears that it determines mobile
mode by comparing this regex string:

/mobile|tablet|ip(ad|hone|od)|android/i

against whatever your browser returns as it's user agent. You can navigate
to this page:

https://www.w3schools.com/jsref/tryit.asp?filename=tryjsref_nav_useragent

and press the button to see what your browser is exposing as it's user
agent.

I'm wondering if your laptop is a chrome book?

There used to be one or more extensions for Firefox that would let you
return your own custom user agent string. Depending on browser and platform
perhaps those are still available?

Good luck!
Mark

Re: [tw] Re: TiddlyDesktop

2017-11-16 Thread Paul Truzzi
Oh I'm sure it is old, it isn't the new fangled TW5 (I'd move over if I
could find a theme that looked like the classic). The one I'm running
says it is TiddlyWiki 2.8.1.

Just speculation -- I wonder if you have an older TWC that isn't
saving with the new TD? One way to test would be to download a new
empty TWC and see if you can get that to save.

Good luck,

[tw] Re: Presenting my simple mobile layout...

2017-11-16 Thread JD
Hey, thanks for the feedback! Yes, I wanted to use Riz's sidebar with
this, but it seems I forgot to add " !important" to the "top" parameter of
tc-sidebar-scrollable... I'll have this fixed by 1.0.1, which is probably
tomorrow. Another: the search results of the simple-search is drawn behind
the sidebar and vertical tab buttons.

Regarding the search-for-themes bug, I want to replicate the issue to see
what tiddler needs fixing, can I ask what edition you loaded the plugin
into? Loading it into Tiddlywiki.com and Tiddlywiki.com/empty.html isn't
showing that search-for-themes bug for me. Thanks!

[tw] Re: Yearning for ONE method ...

2017-11-16 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
Which method of saving are you intending to use?

For default saving, your file has to go in the browser downloads directory
OR, if you change setting to "ask each time" you can save anywhere.

But, if you save with default saving without "ask each time" each save will
be made like file(1), file(2), etc. Which means when you restart your
browser you will need to find the last file(x) and launch that one.

If you use BJ or Mario's save plugin, then for BJ's your file location is

/tiddlywikilocation/file or
/tiddlywikilocation//file

and for Mario's it's

//file   or
///file

This sounds limiting, but you can put a symbolic link (linux) or a junction
(windows) in which can point to anywhere else on your
hard drive.

You can find information for making symbolic links (linux) or junctions
(windows) on line. I don't know what kinds of links are available for Macs,
but I assume they have them also.

Hopefully this clears things a little,

Mark

Hi All

I decided to create two new local tiddlywikis last night. It has been a
long while (several years) since I last did this and I was immediately
confused by the options in GettingStarted.
Do I put the TW files in any local folder? Or, do I need to keep them in
the Firefox download folder (or sub-folder within that)?

I have seen mention of using links; while I do use Ubuntu Linux, I haven't
actually created symlinks before and am not sure how they would apply with
TW.
I also use Windows 7 and Android (and possibly Windows 10) for reading my
TW, so this just adds to my stress whereby I may need a different setup in
each operating system environment.

Like some others in this thread, I would appreciate some guidance.

I have upgraded a couple of my TW's on tiddlyspot, but it was not without
difficulties. I had to try several times before success. When the upgraded
TW finally was uploaded to tiddlyspot, I could not save. I am sure my
password was entered correct, but got the mismatch message. I failed to see
any logic in this.

I could open on my TW on tiddlyspot in firefox and save without any
problems using the very same password.

With Thomas ToDoNow I finally got something I love to use. Better still my

[tw] Re: Yearning for ONE method ...

2017-11-16 Thread Riz
For android users, in case Antidwiki failed to work for you, here is the step
by step instructions for an absolute beginner to set up a web-dav server.

1. Install a web-dav server app. The app I used is
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.webdavserver=en

2. Create a folder in your internal memory/internal storage. Let us say,
myFolder. Place your TW5s in here.

3. Open the app. Select settings menu of the app (top right corner). Change
the following items.

- Network Interface: Loopback
- Home directory: Custom folder
- Custom folder; /sdcard/myFolder

4. Back to the main interface of the app. Start the server.

5. Open your mobile browser and type in the address field: "127.0.0.1:8080"

6. A page will open listing all files you placed in "myFolder". Open a
tiddlywiki and try saving after some modifications.

Pros:
- Several Web-dav server apps are available in play store, you are not bound
with one.
- Relatively easier to set up. Once the first set is done, subsequent launches
is just a matter of starting the server from the app.

Cons:
- So far, external sdcard saving has not worked for me.

Extra tips:
- You can use an app like
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.lite=en
to sync the "myFolder" to dropbox/gdrive/onedrive.
- If you have like one major Tiddlywiki, you can add a shortcut to it placed in
your home-screen. While your TW is open, select "Add to home-screen" from the
overflow menu of chrome browser (the three dots menu on the top right).

Personally I am a fan of Tiddlyserver by Arlen and is using the same in
android. However, setting it up in android involves a few more steps and
might scare a terminal-shy new-comer away, admittedly. Nevertheless, if
anyone wants to do it and need help, by all means ask.

Live long and prosper,
Riz

Hi JD,
Just giving this a test. Thoughts so far...it plays nicely with Riz's
sidebar, which is good :)

The default (I.e. what I see after dragging the plugin and refreshing) on
mobile the initial refresh shoes a search for themes. Closing it and
resaving on mobile seems to get rid of this.

[tw] Re: version 0.6 of savetiddlers now available

2017-11-16 Thread Platykurtic
Thanks! I just installed & tested the latest version & it works great. Any
plans to eventually add this to Firefox & Chrome's add-in repositories once
you are comfortable that savetiddlers is stable enough?

Thanks again!

Ahh, You are right, the video may be confusing in this regard. ... I will
make it clear in the final version.

It is the FireFox downloads folder, that will be tested by the temp(x).html
file. ...

Unfortunately there is no other way in the AddOn API, that lets me check
the FF download folder setting. ...
At least I don't know one. So if anybody has a better info, please let me
know.

I did test the FF download folder setting, and it seems to work.

HanoiSaver ... I don't need to save Hanoi. I'm sure they can take care for
them selfs :)

But you are right. I'll consider a different one for the final V1.0.0
version

This seems to be a bug. ... I'll have a closer look. I actually forgot to
test that usecase. ..
