Interesting stuff guys.I have an Audionote Dac Zero, with which the touch
sounds substantially better than via it's analogue out.The analogue is
still good, and both sound better than my Arcam with the dac.

Just the CD 63,but I also have a Marantz CD94 MKII that has had it's DAC
section removed so is just a transport, and I'd say the Touch sounds
better than it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How well does the Touch work?

2010-04-13 Thread mdconnelly

Interesting! I received my Touch last night and within 5 minutes had it
playing. It took me longer to get it out of the box than to get it
playing music!

The first thing I did was plug the Touch into my Oracle DAC1000 right
next to my Duet, synced the Touch with the Duet, level-matched them and
then proceeded to listen to a few of my favorite albums, occasionally
switching between Touch and Duet.

The switch was so seamless that frequently I thought it did not
actually switch. After perhaps an hour or so of listening I did begin
to hear subtle differences with the Touch being a wee bit more relaxed,
refined and defined. I do wonder if the Touch needs 'breakin' time...
anyone with experience on that?

I have not YET attempted to compare via the Touch analog outs but will
certainly do that at some point. I will say that running the Duet
digital out thru my DAC was dramatically better than the Duet analog
outs.

Overall, I am one very happy Touch owner. My Duet will soon be demoted
to kitchen duty.

Out of curiosity, when you previously compared the analog out of the SB3

Lavry vs Touch? i.e. Level matched and with the ability to -instantly-

Touch as the digital source for the DA-10.

 2. As such, my original comments about the analog output of the Touch
compared to the Lavry still stand. On day 3 of listening, things are
still very, very close for me. I think the Lavry is ever so subtly
better, but it is in the territory where I have to really work at it to
 notice.

So, in that sense, the analog output of the Touch is definitively
 superior to the SB3.

This seems reasonable to me - I've always found/felt the Lavry to be
quite transport-insensitive...OTH it always sounds like the Lavry.
Remember there's no such thing as a (truly) neutral DAC - they all
have some kind of sonic signature. Some dacs are more transport
sensitive and these I would expect to be improved by the Touch compared
to the SB3 - based on my own experiences and also the findings of
others such as Pat at ART Audio and John Swenson.

I've only tried the analogue outputs, as I've understood there might be
a bigger difference on the digital outputs as long as you feed them into
a good DAC. I don't have an external DAC and the built-in one in my
Sherwood RVD-9090 receiver isn't good enough to justify using the Touch
with digital outputs.

I've not done a A/B blind test with the analogue outputs, I've just
compared the SB3 and Touch by switching the receiver inputs myself.

I've used a SB3 with a Lavry DA10 DAC for the past couple of years as
my primary music source.

The Touch arrived Friday and I spent quite a bit of time the past
couple of days listening to the Touch. I level-matched the SB3/Lavry
output with the Touch and synced the two players. I was then able to
switch between the two inputs for back-to-back comparison.

The difference between the SB3 analog out and though the Lavry is quite
noticeable to me (though I don't consider the SB3 analog bad - just
rather pedestrian.)

In comparing the Touch analog out to the SB3/Lavry, the difference is
extremely subtle in my book. I have to strain to hear the difference. I
am very impressed and will probably end up selling my Lavry. In
audiophile-land, the Touch has no right to sound as good as it does for
the price. ;-)

However, I'm sure others will disagree with that thinking, but that's
fine by me. When I have to strain to hear the difference between two
pieces of equipment, that's a sign for me to let go of the issue and
just enjoy the music.

Keep in mind that is just my opinion. While I love good music played on

[insert buzz word here].

I would probably give the Lavry first place based on my long
experience, but frankly the differences are quite subtle in my book.

Other people with different stereos, or who concentrate on different
factors, could well reach a different opinion.

Just to set a point of reference, I have very eclectic tastes in music
but my personal reference point is how well a system handles the music
of voice and acoustic instruments. I've got a fairly simple system where
the source feeds an Image 65i tube amp (6550 outputs) to a pair of
Spendor SP1/2E speakers. Nothing fancy, but I really enjoy the way it
plays music.

The touchscreen is obvious of course. Specifically, I'm curious about
 things like this -

It's in my bathroom now and I love it there because it's the only one
of my Squeezeboxes on which I really don't _have to_ use a remote -
which is what I need in a bathroom.

So from a usability perspective it's really good, though the only other
Squeezebox I sometimes use the built-in UI on is the Radio in the
kitchen, on all others I only control them remotely, music selection is
purely remotely (iPeng, obviously) except for the Touch.

How does the use of a USB HD compare to using the SB server software?
Does it eliminate the 2-10 sec delays so common with the server?
Having the music collection reside on the SB is my primary motivation
for getting a touch, is it worth it?

Don't know what server you use. If it's a decent one (not ReadyNAS or
something) and you still seeing these delays something else is going on
which will probably not be fixed by the Touch.

The server on the Touch is faster than a NAS and slower than a PC or
fast server. It's well usable.
If you _really_ want to go fast, get the 7.6 beta, that's the Touch's
server for big systems.

How does the user interface compare to the SB3 in terms of
intuitiveness friendliness? For instance, is it readable from across
the room? Does it use the same menus format?

Menus are different, but as much as I still love my SB3 I never
considered it usable using it's own UI. Touch is much better.

Readability across the screen is still better on the SB3 but the Touch
looks much cooler with the big cover art.
Especially if you use all the cool screen savers one can build with
Erland's CustomClock Applet

If I'm listening at nite with the lites off, is the Touch going to
light up the room with it's screen?

Face it: yes. I can leave out the light in my bathroom and find my
way.

Any usability quirks, headaches or assets that aren't obvious before
 owning a touch?

You have to keep in mind how the server works or you are going to be
confused: If you plug in a USB stick (or disc) it first scans the
library before showing stuff in the menus. Unfortunately it doesn't
talk about that at all so if you don't know what it's doing you can
easily think it doesn't work correctly.
That's quite confusing, I believe

What's your favorite thing (compared to SB3)?

That it's got a screen that is big enough to be able to actually find
music on the device.

 Least favorite?

That the display doesn't get dark

The thing you wish you knew before getting it?

Nothing. It's much better than what I expected it to be.

Audio Quality: I find it to be better than the SB3, which also came as
a surprise to me yet frankly I believe both are good enough and it's
easier (and more rewarding) to tweak the rest of your Audio chain.

So... you mean you couldn't tell any difference between the Touch with
Lavry DAC versus the Touch with analog outs? (earlier you said that
the Lavry was quite an improvement when coupled with the Sb3 so I want
to make sure I understand what you mean by 'with either source').
 Thanks!

Sorry I wasn't clear. Let me try again.

1. The Lavry sounds like the Lavry whether I'm using the SB3 or the
Touch as the digital source for the DA-10.
