[videoblogging] VEOH'S FRIGHTENING NEW WONDER ! ??

2007-02-14 Thread humancloner1997
I'm rarely impressed. However, the following letter is an
"understatement" of my feelings about discovering a hosting site
literally had the ability to "read my mind".

"Dear People at Veoh:
I read a rave about your new system on the Yahoo list but didn't give
it much thought. Then, when I signed in, I thought you folks had
finally discovered & decided to feature the fabulous Asian music
videos I have come to love so much.

Then I realized that you had managed to "read the minds" of those
visiting the sites using some sort of coding based on the videos they
had left comments on, etc. and had created a "suggested viewing" list.

I'd always skipped the first page before but this time but this time I
found listings of the types of videos I really usually spent hours
looking for.

To be brief and to the point, it is nearly 3:00 AM and I should have
gone to bed two hours ago. However, I found your "recommendations"
were a bottomless "pit of gold".

I found more interesting videos in the last five hours on Veoh than
I've found in the last FIFTY hours sifting through videos here, on
YouTube & other sites.

You people have put the dagger of death into traditional television!
Your system makes watching "what interests you on the Internet" so
effecient that traditional TV will never be able to compete.

We vloggers who create content always knew the Internet & user
generated video was the wave of the future. However, the problem was
always finding the stuff that interested you. Subscriptions were the
first baby step in that direction. However, the system you have
installed is really the "system of tomorrow".

I'm going to post this letter on the Yahoo list tomorrow. I've always
liked Veoh but now you have really made me a fan, big time.

What's so nice about your system is that it seems to be based on the
meta-tags (is that the term) of the videos users have commented on in
the past. I'm one of those vloggers who always tries to leave a
comment when I feel something is good or a real effort has been put
into creating it.

Now, the time and trouble I took doing that has come back to me
"ten-fold" because it has enabled you to find videos I just love and
that I never knew existed.

Keep up the good work.

However, it kind of makes your skin crawl to think that Veoh is able
to "read your mind" and "know what videos you will like". The age of
"Big Brother" is really upon us.

I don't mind Veoh "reading my mind". However, I shudder to think of
George Bush being able to do the same thing by tracking where I go on
the Internet and what I read and/or watch.

Every coin has two sides. Thanks for being the bright and shiny side
of this new frightening world.

Vloggingly yours,

Randolfe (Randy) Wicker

Re: [videoblogging] TONIGHT AT 11, NEWS BY NEIGHBORS

2007-02-14 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Problem is, when a local disaster happens and there's no place to find
out what to do, no central place broadcasting information.

What recourse to citizens have when something like that happens?

And it has. Already. In Minot, ND. Here's where I heard about it:
http://tinyurl.com/2c54gy

Do folks get to sue Clear Channel? The FCC? I wonder...

My guess is that television news will attempt not to pay "local
content harvesters". They will re-create "reality programming". Cheap.
Fast.

[videoblogging] Re: TONIGHT AT 11, NEWS BY NEIGHBORS

2007-02-14 Thread Gena
I seem to remember that tv stations are licensed by the FCC. One of
the mandates of that license is to serve the public.

Not having a viable news or emergency alert system maybe a violation
of that license. There are two issues here, massive cost cutting and
"using" amateur and citizen media to provide a news service at a cut rate.

Not saying that the local citizens provide video is a bad thing. It
might increase the level of community news 100 fold.

But Clear Channel has money up the wazoo. They can't plead poverty.
And if they get away with this it will migrate to other Clear Channel
stations. Clear Channel has phantom radio stations around the country.

Oh, one other thing. If you were a business in Santa Rosa would you
have an employee or hire someone to cover a "news story" about your
business? Can you smell the ascendancy of PR as news in Santa Rosa?

This is getting interesting.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: YouTube - Account Closed?!

2007-02-14 Thread Mike Meiser
I've been encouraging people to use youtube just as ruthlessly as
youtube is using them. Basically a lot of people like the pan are
using it as an advertising platform. Putting up short 30 seconds or
less teasers of an intriguing or viral nature to push their domain and
their brang for their "real vlog".

There are going to be many different angles to this whole youtube
thing. But it'll be interesting to see of youtube tries to stop it's
own users from cashing in on it.

I notice more and more large advertising and coportate accounts on
youtube pushing fortune 500 brands and advertisements... is youtube
going to start killing it's users accounts for treating youtube the
same way youtube treats them?

Or will youtube mearly bury their acocunts while pushing more huge ad
agency content.

Regardless I think some sort of mass exedos and even backlash is
inevitable at some point in the coming year or two.

I like that you use the word fiefdom.

I actually think we're in the digital dark age, just as Brewster
Mckale of archive.org said.

Litterally what's going on here is we have a huge open cyberspace with
not enough roads and some very scary space inbetween a bunch of closed
castles like youtube and 300 other social networking sites.

What we need is a tremendous amount of infrastructure to ensure
mobility, communication, and security for those that would stake out a
home and start a farm in open cyberspace.

In short the roads must come to your front door.

Meanwhile we have the high priests of the old media religion waging a
freaking crusade against new ideas and the new digital culture with
their damn witch hunts and inqusitions for anyone who dares share
their media online. P2P is the devil to modern day religion of media
oligopy.

Ramble, ramble.

BTW, We've been hitting these issues of interoperability pretty hard
lately on the mefeedia blog.

http://mefeedia.com/blog/

It really is your friends and your media, so why should it also be your network?

Who the f*ck needs youtube anyway?

did you color it to match the website color scheme/hug theme?

*smile* No, I've had pink hair 3+ years now. Grandpa actually tried to do
his pink once, but the women at his retirement village talked him out of it.
:)

It's just as well. The white suits him. ;)

[videoblogging] Re: YouTube - Account Closed?!

2007-02-14 Thread mrbellavia
This has been an interesting thread. We've actually been using
YouTube for a client project right now http://www.inkisit.com for
Kodak. I actually tried on their behalf to investigate a more direct
relationship with them but to no avail. In particular didn't want to
find ourselves up a creek one day if they took us down for any variety
of reasons. We've been posting the video to all the broadband video
sharing sites as a back up method but trying to consolidate things via
YouTube. At the same time I have a feeling that the corporate use of
these sites is what is probably making it harder for small guys in a
way.

On a separate note, this same client was thinking of expanding it's
outreach efforts to bloggers, podcasters, etc. and involve them in
this "Ink Is It" talk show, mainly around issues of printing and the
high cost of ink. Your show/blog doesn't even need to focus on these
issues or even on technology - mainly they want to show how the
problem has impacted everybody and doesn't discriminate. Kodak is
coming out with a new line of inkjet printers in March that hopes to
dirupt the model. So I'm in the midst of a hunt for folks that are
open to working with advertisers in different ways, but the hunt is
kind of a slog right now. Is it a direct person to person effort
(which is what we've been conducting) or is there a clearinghouse of
sorts to present the pitch of how we'd like to work with folks and see
if there is interest? I figured in some ways this message list might
be the best forum to start the conversation since a lot of the more
vocal folks are right here.

Thanks,
Michael

I am just user.. i pasted the release from the site. I would love to be
affilated with them
somehow though... I love the product.

The Participary Culture group has been contacting videobloggers asking us if we
would
consider posting links to the player on our sites. I really like the player so
I created a
couple blog posts on my site (http://billshackelford.com) and have been posting
stories to
digg and reddit about the releases to help get the word out.

It really is your friends and your media, so why should it also be your
network?

Who the f*ck needs youtube anyway?

[videoblogging] Copyrights Laws for using Music in Video

2007-02-14 Thread Nick Schmidt
Does anyone know anything about the law about using popular bands
music in your videos?

Do you have to source the band and titled of the song?

What does the RIAA think about it?

What do we have to do to make it legit? or can we?

It looks from previous posts on this.

Legally we should pay the bands/company for using their music in our
videos.

2007-02-14 Thread Kent Nichols
Basically, it's not the best idea to use mainstream copyrighted music
if you're trying to be commercial (make money) from your work.

There's a lot of smaller artists that are Creative Commons friendly
and want you to use their music in return for attribution.

[videoblogging] Re: Make Money With a Podcast, the book

2007-02-14 Thread humancloner1997
I couldn't agree more with Schlomo on this one. Vlogging removes
the "gatekeepers" but traditional media tries to trap new talent.
When you buy into "them", you won't feature the really interesting,
different and fabulous things in your own life because you have been
brainwashed to think "most popular" is best.

[videoblogging] Support Free Speech, Production Expenses Covered, Near Syracuse, NY

2007-02-14 Thread Jeff Diehl
this is my second post. due to an increase in urgency, we are now
covering expenses. we are looking with someone who has a good-quality
Mini-DV camera and can guarantee decent lighting (natural is fine) and
sound (onboard is fine, it just has to be very clear).

for details, my old post is below:

hi. i'm Jeff Diehl, publisher of 10ZenMonkeys.com. you may have heard
of my suit against griefer Michael Crook and his DMCA campaign.

details here: http://www.10zenmonkeys.com/2006/11/01/eff-crook-dmca-lawsuit/

we are in need of an independent producer who can go to a location in
or around Syracuse, NY and conduct a simple video session. i can't
give too many details here, but if you respond to this note, EFF
lawyers will contact you with more info.

this video WILL be distributed widely across the
webernets and we can offer a prominent production
credit, as well as the warm, fuzzy feeling that you've helped EFF's ongoing
defense of digital free speech.

please respond with an estimate of your expenses and whether you're
available by the weekend.

[videoblogging] Webbies Reels?

2007-02-14 Thread Halcyon
anyone else get mail from the webbies about submitting a 'broadcast quality'
reel? I sent in something, but included a note about the silliness of the
request. I'm applying for a WEBby...if I knew how or wanted to make
broadcast video, I'd probably be doing it. :)

2007-02-14 Thread andrew michael baron
This may be a repeat email from last year and the year before that,
but I encourage everyone to consider SXSW.

I have been on quite the conference circuit and hands-down, SXSW is
the most fun. Its very social, very informative, its a great town and
a great season to be there.

Check out the list of speakers here, you will see its quite a to-do:
http://2007.sxsw.com/interactive/programming/speakers/

If anyone is discouraged by the cost here are a few tips:

1. You wont need a conference pass if you cant afford it. There is
plenty going on and plenty of people to hang out with.

2. There are a lot of parties, free sessions, etc.

3. There is also an Austin barcamp that is going on at the same time
and anyone can attend and speak there for free.

4. On Craigs List Austin, type in SXSW and you will see you can
sublet an apartment or crash a room for next to nothing in price
(compared to hotels).

5. Its cheap to fly to Austin from many major cities.

Rocketboom has never hosted a party before but this year we are
teaming up with 30boxes and Satisfaction to host an official SXSW
party on Sat night.

2007-02-14 Thread Robyn Tippins
My problem is that I am traveling too much already. I'll be at the Madison
Barcamp 3/3 and 3/4, at EA and GDC 3/6-3/9 and then am speaking in Chicago
3/15. SXSW was one of the things I could skip in March. Party for me and
take lots of video folks (as if I had to say so lol)

yeah, wrong.

what's stopping you from using bit torrent?

digital has never been more free.

just because some corporate gatekeeper is publishing a
yellow pages doesnt mean you have to use their yellow pages.

all someone needs to do is mesh the stats for popular bit
torrents and you've got a bit-torrent-tube. oh wait, that's
done already...

(the public doesnt want that anyway. they'd just use it
to pirate stuff.)

[videoblogging] p.s., deduct your video equip $$ on your taxes

2007-02-14 Thread Robert

So this year I "started a new business" and that biz hasn't
made any profit (audio/video) while it has cost a bunch in
terms of equipment..

so made sure to buy the "home and bizness" tax software this
year..

bottom line; saved ~$3,000 in taxes.

if I win that big award on current.tv then of course i'd have
to list that as biz income.. still holding my breath for that
day, lol.
