Accessible Crosswords App
Hey, all. Maybe you all know about this, but I am behind on Twitter and I only just saw it. Here is a link (I only have one for the US) for a totally VoiceOver friendly and accessible crossword puzzle app. I am playing it right now on my iPad mini. Hi. I'm the developer of Four Down. Jane, I just wanted to say thank you for posting about my app. I'm delighted to hear that you've been enjoying it. Thanks to the request from Keith among others, I've been working on an iPhone version. I'm pleased to say that it was released today. The iPhone version should, I hope, prove to be just as accessible with VoiceOver as the iPad version. Hi Christopher, Thanks for getting in touch, and for your kind words about Four Down. Unfortunately, the problem that you're seeing is a bug with the VoiceOver support. It's showing the new puzzle on the screen but is unfortunately still announcing the clues from the previous puzzle. Please accept my apologies. The good news is that I've submitted a fix to Apple: I'm just waiting for it to be reviewed and then it'll be available to you. In the meantime, closing the app using the app switcher (double-tap the home button to access it) and opening it again will allow you to tackle another puzzle. Hi Andy et al, Thanks for your note regarding this issue, as I was curious about why I was still seeing clues for puzzle 1 after opening puzzle 2, for puzzle 2 after opening puzzle 3, et cetera. I've noticed this too, and my solution for now is just to close Four Down, then take it out of the app switcher, then restart. BTW, I really like this app and am looking forward to the update. OT, but related: any mileage in Scrabble? it works the same except you make up all the words. I could make an online version of that, but not this kind of CW puzzle. not got the words or clues you see. Any thoughts? Yes, Andy, it's a great app and I'm enjoying it. I haven't minded thebug too much myself and have worked around it in a similar way to others, but will look forward to the fix, of course. I have a bit of trouble in correcting a word I have put in, if there has been a letter missed out, etc. It is probably user error and there is a good way to do this, so perhaps you could explain the easiest way to correct an entry already added. If you tap on the clue with the mistyped word, then in the next screen you can flick right or left, double tap on the letter to slect it, and hit the delete key. Flick back to the black now, selectit with double tap, input the correct letter, and then double tap done and it is fixed. Hi Andy, Thanks for the heads-up regarding the update. Here's a suggestion for you. When you review the clues for a word, VoiceOver will tell you if letters are filled in, as in 1 across: cat (8 letters) C blank blank s 4 blanks which is fine, but when you double tap on the clue and start filling it in, VoiceOver won't identify whether a particular letter is already filled in. Would there be a way to get VoiceOver to identify a filled edit field so that, for example, when I get to the 4th letter it would tell me that the 4th letter is an S? Just wondering if that's possible. Tom had a great suggestion with VO announcing the letters that have already been filled in. Sometimes, I need to go back to the clue to hear if there are any letters filled in and the number of blank spaces left. Hi, Often you'll know if you've got an answer correct as it'll fit properly with the letters from other words. However, if you're not sure, then you can get Four Down to tell you. When you're answering a clue, there are buttons for checking or filling in an individual letter or the whole answer. When you're not answering a clue, there are buttons for checking or, if you really want to, filling in the whole puzzle. With VoiceOver enabled, Four Down will announce whether or not there are any incorrect letters, and if there are it will tell you where they are. Hi Desi, Thanks very much. I'll do my best to explain the steps. You can rate an app in iTunes on your computer, or using the App Store app on your iPhone or iPad. I'm going to assume you're using an iPhone. Please let me know if that's not the case and I can have another go. Open the App Store app. You now need to switch to the Search tab. VoiceOver will get you there eventually by swiping, but there can be a lot of content on the screen so it may take a while. It'll probably be easier to find it by dragging your finger around the screen. The Search tab's at the bottom, where tabs usually are. Double-tap to switch tabs as you usually would. On the search screen there's a search field near the top of the screen. If you search for Four Down it should be the first hit. Swiping will get you to a heading called Four Down. Double-tap. Swiping will then get you to Reviews. Double-tap again. Swiping will then get you to a "Write a Review" button. Double-tap again to open the screen for rating the app. You may be prompted for your Apple ID password at this point. On this screen there's an adjustable rating where you can swipe up or down with a single finger to set the number of stars from one to five. Once you've done that, there's a submit button in the top-right. I hope my explanation of the steps is helpful. I hope I'm not breaching the group's etiquette by bumping this rather old topic but I just wanted to let you know that I've just released an update to Four Down that adds a feature that a number of VoiceOver users have asked me for. They were looking for a way to make it easier for them to build up a mental picture of the grid. To help with this, I've added a setting that you can turn on to have the locations on the grid described using rows and columns. For example, with the setting enabled, it will say "Row 1, Column 2. 1 across" rather than just "1 across". For the really keen puzzlers among you, the update also adds the option to buy a further 24 puzzles via in-app purchase. I hope you're continuing to enjoy Four Down.
