Pat you’re fortunate to have an Apple Tech spend so much time working through
all these things and guiding you into the risky territory that Terminal allows.

I have hundreds of passwords and notes kept securely inside 1Password which I
find is an excellent product. You can’t however, forget the master password!!!

Re: Update on Password problem update

2018-11-21 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Pat,

Just a disclaimer - the below is as for me on OSX El Capitain 10.11.6 - if you
are on a newer OS some things may have changed.

Youprobably have a new login keychain with your new password. It would start
empty and will only contain what you have done since the PW change.

You should still be able to access the info on your old keychain PROVIDED you
remember the old login password you used when it was in use.

I have had to retrieve old keychains when doing a clean install without
migrating user accounts - the login keychain was (like yours) fairly empty and
I needed access to my old keychain.

Keychain Access can access more than one keychain - I currently have my default
keychain - Apple calls this login (in bold) I also have a previous keychain
which I called SLlogin (this is from my old Snow Leopard installation)

At some stage I should harvest all the info off the old keychain and get it
onto the new keychain but, at the minute, I just use both.

So first you need to find your old keychain...

Apple keeps its keychains in user/Library/Keychains (current for OSX 10.11)
depending on what you got up to in terminal your old key chain may be there
(but renamed) but it may be possibly easier to go to your SuperDuper backup,
find the login keychain, copy it to your desktop, RENAME IT (eg OLDlogin) and
then drop it into your user/Library/Keychains folder.

Then you need to actually access the keychain...

Open the Keychain Access app and under the 'File' dropdown menu click 'Add
Keychain" it should open the file selection box at the keychain folder (if not
- navigate to the folder) select you newly named old keychain and click the
'add' button.

You should now see the keychain in the Keychain Access sidebar - select it and
the "All Items" category should show you everything that is in there. To
actually show the info, when asked for the password, you obviously need your
OLD login password (since that is the password for this keychain).

I probably don't need to tell you that you need to be VERY careful when
adding/deleting/modifying anything in your keychain(s) - you can really stuff
things up otherwise!

HTH

Cheers

Hello, all,
Many thanks to all who wrote back with suggestions — Diana, Susan, Peter,
Tim, Neil. I can log into the computer now. I rang Apple this morning, and was
passed through several people to an Apple technician. After he had tried making
a few new passwords, and getting the same result as me (in other words — they
didn’t work), he guided me through a process using Terminal, and we finally
arriived at the fix. It took about 2 hours to get there, an ordeal.

But the news is not all good. All my settings and a lot of personal stuff
(Key Chain!) is gone, It seems I have to argue with bossy applications to
replace the info into them. My 3 Mail accounts persistently rejected having the
proper Mail passwords replaced several times.

I don’t have Time Machine, just a very large backup hard disk and Super
Duper. I do not see any of the Key Chain data — does Super Duper hide it
anywhere? If it is not there, I’m going to have a hard time.

Apple's automated guide to retrieving passwords needs some urgent
improvement. It is impossible in places to know just which password is to be
retrieved: thel log-in name or Apple ID. In my case, it was the password
specifically to start the computer.

And I will not be changing the new password any time soon.

Thanks again,
Pat

The problem I had was quite different. My husband’s iPhone kept asking him to
sign in to his Apple ID. When we tried it never worked.

I rang Apple and they told me to log into the Apple ID server. I did, it worked.

Later he sent us an email with a couple of URLs, I did not look at them at the
time, I’m due at a function on 5 min so no time now. This is from his email:

Hi Graham and Diana,

Re: Password problem update

2018-11-20 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Pat,

As Tim and Peter have said, I think you need to clarify which password you
"changed" and how you have tried to "reset" it/them.

When you originally said"I changed the PW for my desktop computer
yesterday" I assumed you were talking about your user login password - if so,
this password is specific to a particular OSX computer - in fact it is specific
to a particular user account on each computer.

However, the reset you are describing - which is applying to your phone and
iPad - sounds more like the password for your Apple ID, which is how you access
your Apple account on any of your devices for such things as iCloud access,
iTunes music, app store software etc.

Obviously if the password that you originally reset WAS your user account
password then trying to reset your Apple ID password will not help.

If your problem IS with your user account password then this Apple support page
might help:

Please forgive if I am missing the point or stating the obvious.

Cheers

I have now supposedly reset my password 3 times, except none of them have
worked. Apple ‘support’ has not helped at all. The automated system does not
target the right objectives. It drags in my phone and iPad and tries to make
new passwords for them, when it is the computer that needs it.

I asked for a chat; the response was, we will get to you in 2 minutes. 20
minutes later it blanked out. Another page asked for the serial number. I
assumed they meant for the computer. I found the number on the bottom and duly
typed it in. Message came up: “this is not a valid serial number”. But it is.

So I am hoping WAMUG has some better advice.

Pat, if you change your Apple password, it is universal. That becomes the
password you use with your Apple ID and the new password will have to be used
for all of your devices. It’s not a bug. Just make sure that you are using the
same password on all of your devices.

When you change the password on your computer and it doesn’t ‘work’ does the
same new password work on your other devices?

Password problem update

2018-11-20 Thread Patricia Scott

Hopefully,
Pat

The final solution has been to revert to Tiger, not even the AppleCare
Tech guys could figure it out after nearly 4 hours on the phone.

Hi Adrian,

What Model G4 PowerBook were you trying to install Leopard on?

The first G4 PowerBook that has a fast enough processor speed for
Leopard (867 MHz) was the PowerBook G4 1GHz/867MHz P88 introduced
in November 2002.

Morning,

If your machine boots with the 10.5 install disk,

go to utilities choose reset password.

Select User name.

Enter new password then verify in box below, save.

Do not use reset.

Yes you will get a message about keychains, but it is about keychains
password that wont be changing.

Oh, once you click on ok in keychains message box, there will be
nothing in reset password box.

Do not despair it has changed the password.

Reboot using new password for user.

Cheers!

Thanks Rob and all.

Tried that Rob and the permissions repair did find a problem but still
no joy. Taking a step back, the 2 initial attempts to upgrade the
installation failed which left me nowhere so the upgrade was done in
Target mode via my G5 iMac, I have tried every combination of user
name and password belonging to the PowerBookPro and the iMac--on the
off chance that the installation process had adopted the iMac
KeyChain, all to no avail.

All files on the PowerBookPro is accessible in Target mode. I am
thinking that transferring all the files to another disk and having
another shot at running the Installer is the next option.

Re: password problem

2008-06-08 Thread Andrew Schox
I'm not sure whether this is a related issue, but I did an upgrade of
Leopard Server to 10.5.3 on Friday, and then could not log in with any
known user name/password combination! I booted off the Install DVD and
used the password reset utility with no success. I then tried it

They regularly seem to have authentication problems with their POP
servers. And I know it's iinet's fault because I can POP mail off
other servers over the same connection without any problems. It
usually goes away after a couple of hours.

FYI, to quote iinet's newsletter:
The Managing Director said:

August was another unbelievably busy month at iiNet, as you will
see from the lead article in our newsletter. We're starting to
get on top of the backlog of calls and emails, and I hope you'll
find it much easier to get through and talk to us if you need any
assistance in the future.

Elsewhere in the newsletter:

Contact Centre Inundated by Requests for Virus Support Information
===

August saw our Contact Centre inundated with support enquiries
and requests for information, after the latest virus threat from
Blaster Worm and SoBig was unleashed on unsuspecting Internet
users.

These viruses and countless others like them are often spread via
email or a security hole in your Windows operating system. The
best way to ensure your hardware and data are protected, is by
regularly updating the operating system of your computer. The
Contact Centre reported a significant increase in the number of
calls received during August. Current figures indicate that an
additional 30,000 enquiries were answered by our customer service
consultants last month. Check out our Contact Centre statistics

below.

Here are some interesting stats from our Contact Centre Team:

. Number of calls per month: Approx 80,000
. Average length of each call: 10 mins
. Total number of operators: 140
. Calls answered by operator per day: Between 40 and 50
. Average emails answered by Contact Centre: Approx 1000 daily

Obviously all those pesky Mac users asking questions about the
viruses affecting their machines :)

Have fun,

2003-09-11 Thread Mark Scholmann
From a PC user point of view...

Is there something different in the PPP specs on new Macs or something to
do with the way data is transmitted/received (character set?, etc) ?

I only ask, as I notice the bagging of iiNet on this list, but have to say
that after 7-8 years with them (on both Mac and PC) I can not say I have
ever encountered more than a reasonable period of down time due to some
specific reason. In the past 4 years I have had only a handful of engaged
signals (20 at most), with connection times ranging from 8 hrs - 70+ hrs.

I have an old dinosaur Mac 8100/110 , which I occassionally fire up to do
some things, and the connection still works on a Motorola 28K modem using
the old (original) PPP scripts.

I have friends with iMac's and a Mac laptop (ibook?), and I have helped
them connect to iiNet, with no problems of what I read on this list ?

I understand that the Support call centre may not always appreciate the Mac
customers.
Surely, there must be a simple reason for the connection issues ?... well,
certainly not ones that result in you having to purchase a Net Friendly
Fridge to get on line ?

Mark Scholmann

Re: Password problem

2003-09-11 Thread Kelly Duffy
Sadly the person who was told to try turning his
fridge off while he used the net was a PC user. I've
had a few PC using friends complain about them
recently after not having problems for years before.
But a net friendly fridge, maybe one of those LG ones,
the stainless steel ones with built in internet access
and TV, now that would always be nice. :-D

Just a pity they are a little above my budget... Along
with that nice shiny G5.

*wanders back to dreamland with lots of Monopoly
money*

I understand that the Support call centre may not
 always appreciate the Mac
 customers.
Surely, there must be a simple reason for the
 connection issues ?... well,
certainly not ones that result in you having to
 purchase a Net Friendly
Fridge to get on line ?

I recently changed from iiNet due to their
 customer
service. I would be more willing to accept that
 the
fault was at my end sometimes if they actually
 took
into account that they could also be at fault at
times.I got my phone line tested, changed all my
settings numerous times, turned my modem speed
 down,
spent months trying to fix my problems with them
 and
  gave up.

The best excuse I heard was from a friend who was
 told
by iiNet that his fridge could be the problem. Of
course everyone needs to go and buy a new fridge
 when
you get disconnected from the internet...

I'm still hnting a decent ISP, it looks like
 Westnet
is the next one on my list for trialing.

  Good luck,

Re: Password problem and iiNet

2003-09-11 Thread David Watkins
Mark

I go along with everything you say about iiNet and overall have not
missed a beat with them. I was one of their first customers they
ever had, joining them in 1994. Gone through all the changes of Mac
OS systems, started with them using would you believe syestem 6 and
a 14400 modem. (Wowwhat a difference using OS X and Broadband)

Back to iiNet, well they are not perfect like the rest of us but I
do honestly believe they do a good overall job and with them being
one of the bigger ISP's you are going to hear more complaints about
them than any one else.

There are hundreds of different reasons why one can have a bad
connection to an ISP and of course the easy way out is to say it is
their fault.

I find if I have a problem with anything to do with a Mac be it
regarding the internet or using software, you will generally find
that some one has had the same problem before you and by doing a
search through google their is a good chance you find an answer.

I understand that the Support call centre may not always appreciate the Mac
 customers.
