[WSG] Copyright Issues

2009-02-17 Thread Marvin Hunkin
Hi.
doing a fruit and veg site, and now asked for permission to use recipes from
Delia smith, Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson.
but no success, and not able to use their recipies from their sites for my
own site.
part of my site, was a recipies page, with about 6 recipies.
now, would like to put this site online, but my question is:
what vegetable recpies and legal and free, and which people to approach to
get permission.
any ideas, or pointers.
got permission to use images, which i found on google from the owners.
and will put a credits links, and a page, next to my copyright page on this
site.
any one got any ideas, this is the last piece of the current site and
student web project, which i want to upload online.
but do not want to be prosecuted for copyright infringement in australia.
so doing the right thing and getting permission.
before uploading this site.
any ideas.
or maybe e-mail me off list if necessary.
cheers Marvin.

I have an image that is floated to the left and an unordered list
that I am trying to get to move to the right side of an image, in a
horizontal layout...the unordered list (navigation bar) is also in a
horizontal line position. I need the navigation to align to the
bottom of the image...the image's height is 100px, and the width is
200px...how would I accomplish this?

not copyright but the terms of use.If someone is offering content with a
policy of use that lets anyone use that content in a non-commercial way, I
find that thing as respectable as anyone who prefers their copyrighted
content not being used in any way.

It was just a thought that maybe, if he finds content we would like to use,
he can always ask about the author's policy of use. It's just that.

This is the Candidate release 1, that hopefully be our production

First impression: good.
Informative page reports.

A few points...

1: i and b can in many cases not be replaced by h1..h6 or em and strong.
Both i and b are valid - span-like (no implied semantics) - elements in
HTML4/XHTML1, and are (so far) kept that way in (X)HTML5.
The existence of b and i should not be called a failure.

2: according to specs (and browsers) a character encoding stated in an
xml declaration is good, and further stating unnecessary.
No warning should be given in such a case.

An ?xml ? declaration (or anything else before the Doctype) will
trigger Quirks mode in IE6 so should be avoided.

The prolog is optional if the defaults (XML 1.0 and UTF-8 or UTF-16) are
used.

It is forbidden if HTML 4.01 is used.

FWIW: anything other than an xml declaration before doctype will make
_all_ IE/win versions stay in quirks mode.

The prolog is optional if the defaults (XML 1.0 and UTF-8 or UTF-16)
are used.

Which means one can deliberately choose to put the xml declaration in,
and its 'encoding' is valid and honored. That's my point.

It is forbidden if HTML 4.01 is used.

Indeed.

need the navigation to align to the bottom of the image...the image's height

[WSG] DHTML Menus

2009-02-17 Thread Kristine Cummins
I've recently seen some arguments against the use of DHTML menus for
accessibility issues. How much is this an issue.. What is the percentage of
population that does not have javascript enabled? Any other thoughts on the
topic?

Thanks,
Kristine

It's hard to tell, but I have seen estimates from 10% to 20%.

Because of the almost universal pop-up blockers, inconsiderate
sites are using JavaScript to bypass them. This is likely to lead
more people to turn off JS.

My thoughts have always leaned towards using them as an enhanced form of
navigation that supplements a well-designed site, while not requiring that
they be used as the sole means of navigation. Making this decision
eliminates the need for Rube Goldberg-esque attempts at providing keyboard
support and other means that try to emulate OS UI conventions, while always
falling short. I would also recommend against using so-called pure CSS
multi-level menus, such as Suckerfish as they are often more of an
accessibility and usability problem than anything else.

A visual illustration would be this mini test site:
