No, they do not close DVNP after Easter. It is open all year around. There
are a couple of camp grounds closed after mid April that is only due to
the lower attendance. I was there last year well after Easter and walked
from Furnace Creek to Stovepipe with about 70 other fools for the Death
Valley

I for one DON'T see what the big deal is about the FM birds

Every time I listen it's like a free for all.

Thank you for your responeses, I finalley get a good answer other than just
"Stay off the linear birds" I knew some of you would get your panties all in a

So it makes sense, thanks for taking the time to explain...

There are some very good reasons to NEVER use FM on a linear
transponder, especially FO-29 and AO-7.
Since FM is running a constant carrier, it sucks all the available power
away from other users on the transponder, and makes the transponder run
a full-carrier on the output.
This is VERY hard
That's a weird one...let us know when u find it!!

Thanks Bill. Yes, a single feed line goes to a Diamond duplexer then 2 lines
to the radio (meter and preamp in line)
I will adjust the freqs next time

It sounds like you when you are hearing your distorted voice it is some
cross-mod from your own radio rather than a downlink signal from the bird. I
assume you are using a diplexer to split the coax from the Elk to 2m and 70cm,
and then running coax to each output on the TS-2000? The diplexer
Ted,
It sounds like you are hearing a "reflection" of your signal, not the downlink
from FO-29. This is a common malady associated with 3rd harmonic interference
on mode J (V/U) satellites. Try this on a pass that will reach at least 30
degrees above the horizon:
1. Turn HRD control of your

Okay, but *why*? Why are we so obsessed with squeezing bandwidth down
and down,
Good morning,
Since putting up the Elk on a rotor (fixed el +- 25 deg), I decided to try
some linear birds.
I have tried FO 29 about 3x but seem to have some issues. I am using TS-2000
in SAT mode with HRD Sat program.
Up: 145.9 LSB
Dn: 435.8 USB
I am clearly able to track the bird with dopple
Thanks; I found it. Turns out if the screen is maximized the status bar
rolls off the page. I thought I was losing my mind.

In the end, digital compression of spectrum space is going to happen more and
more. AM style broadcast is hugely inefficient even though it is painfully
simple to do. I don't really believe that D-Star is the right choice for
"everything" because it is single source. But, so is Microsoft wind
Big thumbs down, as the full duplex desenses very badly. Nice radio otherwise,
but stinks for satellite. I bought one of the first hundred, and have kept up
with the firmware updates.

Anyone using (first hand) one of these for FM LEO's? I have read that the
sub-band
(when running full duplex) may not be as sensitive? How well does it work?

Echolink Users,
I have Echolink but my 2-meter hand-held has no connectivity. Is there
someone who will allow me to conference with them on Thursday nights, just
