I am not a chap but I think I can answer your question. The earliest sources of alfabeto - Montesardo and the Cancionero Bezon give the version of chord A = G major with the 2nd course open. The reason for this is because on the 4-course guitar the 3rd of the chord had to be on the 2nd course
