Subject: Sv: (313) ID help
Regarding DJ Unknown/Unknown DJ and Techno-Cut Records... Does anyone know if/where these are available as re-issues? There's a track by Unknown DJ/DJ Unknown on the label that is gorgeous, I've been looking for it forever. It seems like it was big in Detroit, I have it on a lot of WGPR mixtapes from 1991. It has sweet piano chords in it and sort of a bass/freestyle drumtrack... I've heard the 12 once - it has a clean instrumental on one side and then the other side has samples (vocals etc.) all over it. Any info appreciated! environ * 73 mandeville drive * wayne, NJ 07470-6566 * USA [EMAIL PROTECTED] * http://www.webspan.net/~environ
Re: Subject: Sv: (313) ID help
If the vocal side has a sample saying something about house - house music, then... It's called Basstronic, by the Unknown DJ. Not sure of the label name but the cat # is DYF-016. A personal favorite of mine. I picked up a new copy last December here in San Francisco, so it is likely still in print. Distribution may be very poor however. I bought the record from Open Mind Music on Divisadero, so you might try giving them a call at 415.621.2244. They regularly get in new copies of all that old LA electro stuff. -e p.s. embarassingly I used to mix the instrumental version of this with the acapella mix of Nu Nu by Lidell Townsell. Now if anyone remembers THAT record I'll be really surprised. :) On Tue, 28 Sep 1999, environ wrote: Regarding DJ Unknown/Unknown DJ and Techno-Cut Records... (313) re: Stacey Pullen
Well... it's interesting that we've had a couple of positive reports about Stacey Pullen elsewhere in the country. Makes me wonder if he didn't have a different crate of records for the Perth leg of the tour. I guess I'm getting ahead of myself. Be warned, my opinions expressed below may annoy you. Anyway, so a couple of days ago is the Stacey Pullen gig for Perth, and boy am I looking forward to it. We finally get to hear some proper music, some music from detroit and some actual deepness as well, after being played down to by certain other dj's visiting our shores lately. I got there in time to hear one of my favourite local dj's, martin L, who played an absolutely creamer of a set, starting off with a nice housey record with flutes and lush sounds, working his way through some blue 6, and up to the deeper sounds of detroit. Yeah, I get to hear Infiniti's 'Game One', a Frictional record, plus a couple of more pumping house records like 'open door' by losoul. An excellent set, and a great setup for Mr Pullen. He starts off with this crazy drumroll thing, not unlike that off the new planet e fransisco mora jazz cd, just totally organic jazz drumming. It was at this point I was so happy, finally a gig in which real music gets played, not just hours of disco loops. Finally an international dj will play good music, perhaps even some music from detroit. I own a few Pullen tracks and love them. Well that good feeling was shortlived, as Pullen kicked into admittedly a cool track, westworld by chia pet, and then into red alert. Basically the rest of his four hour set represented low quality tunes, absolutely no deepness at all, and I wonder whether even one tune he played represented detroit at all. It was just the same old same old, uninteresting loops and just 'pumping' music. He played get get down, and that was about as deep as it got. Anyone off the street could have played that set, there was none of that detroit vibe that I love so much. It was uninspiring and way below what I would have expected. Basically I think he played this cheese because of one of two possible reasons. Either the promotor of this gig told him to pump it up, or perhaps he thought he should because he figured that Perth couldn't handle any deepness, or that he just doesn't know any better. Either way I'm not impressed. Can anyone tell me there hasn't been a fantastic array of music to come from detroit and elsewhere in the last however long, tunes like knights of the jaguar, art of vengeance, or if you want house, stuff from theo parrish, moodymann, or rick wade. And that's just from detroit. What about the rest of the world? Surely there's enough on offer to be able to still play a set with energy, but without having to turn to red alert and get get down? Basically at this gig the local dj's far outshone the hired help. I know many people at this gig, myself included, came away dissappointed by what was on offer. In fact the only way you would have liked that set is if you were totally high on drugs, because it wasn't aimed at the mind. Alton Miller is coming to Perth soon, and if I don't hear some deep house, if I don't hear some tunes which reach the absolutely high quality calibre of the tunes he puts out, in other words if I hear more basement jaxx and get get down, I'm giving up. If anyone can get in contact with him, please let him know that we're crying out for some deepness over here and we won't settle for less. Dave PS - All in my opinion of course... _ Do You Yahoo!? Re: (313) mr. sicko
Ah, avoiding the question Mr. Sicko? :-) Not at all .. just couldn't answer the original question in one email. I've always wondered what it is about current generations that have shown a tendency away from linear narrative, and more towards repetition. Believe me, I would have loved to have had the freedom of style that Simon Reynolds or Kodwo Eshun had with their books--not that I write with that much artifice. Inventing new words and all seems distracting at first, but maybe that's a viable way to describe many of the sounds in the techno spectrum. I guess it's a matter of personal preference. I had to fight to keep even the tiniest flairs alive (like jack to jack-boot in Chapter 5). Part of that I believe is the fact that this was my first book, and that I was working with U.S. publishers and editors. Song forms with strong structure, lyric, and melody were especially useful when music technology (fidelity) was much lower. Does the mere presence of bass-bins allow us to enjoy bass-heavy forms of music? Aside from the purely social function that the Electronic Music scene provides, why are we drawn to repetitive music? Are our minds evolving to accept these are valid artistic statements? Is it a reaction/ reflection of the way we understand our world (bytes)? So what do we look for in techno? I think there are as many sonic parameters in the answer as there are moods and mindsets of the listener. Personally, I've always aimed for techno that has the prickling intensity of life ... literally electronic music that seems to have it's own life above and beyond that of its creators. I really think Warp was onto something with the whole Artifical Intelligence thing, but it got horribly misinterpreted as musical snobbery, and a lot of the tracks weren't as vibrant as others. Or others yet to come ... Not to exclude any artists on either side, but the uptempo and melodic work of Morgan Geist, Dan Curtin, Hanna, Jason Williams (Velocette), Ken Ishii, Co-Fusion, Titonton, much of the Plaid/BDP continuum and backtracking ... several early works by May, Atkins and Saunderson is always where I place my own personal center of the genre. Okay, I'm starting to ramble ... I'm cutting myself off before I use the word pulsing :) -Dan Dan Sicko http://www.reverbmag.com http://www.techno-rebels.com

We @ IN-SITE love Mr. Pullen and found his recent NYC shows (Twilo and The Cooler) to be faultlessly deep. Mike Bindra-Twilo's manager-was blown-away, and for those of you who know Mike that is saying a lot! As far as the Jaxx being cheese, well we're all entitled to our opinions. I happen think the Jaxx's production work has always been brilliant (although the current stuff is over played and over hyped) but they are not the DJ's they once were (anyone who saw them spin @ their London club a few years ago will know what I'm talking about). I recently had the misfortune to see them play @ Twilo - talk about crap they spun for maybe 45 min.s to an hour and only played one track that was not their own - major letdown! I saw them in London years ago and was really impressed, they spun all night mixing in tons of different styles, but all on a deep tip. Sorry for the off-topic digression! One of the reasons _Techno Rebels_ works so well is that it didn't lapse into sub-Deleuzian word invention. Eshun revels in this and comes up some neat words (and hence ideas) but I'm less into his whole journalistic bent. I'm just not into Reynolds' stuff (intelligent booty anyone). I liked the fact that any attempts Dan made to describe techno never got in the way of me reading it, unlike Eshuns/Reynolds work. to the guy asking about monobox's 'realm' aka Lord Hood, i've never seen it on cd, but as it's very much in the basic channel vein, i think that would be missing the point. did anyone buy monobox's 'downtown'. i never got that one. i've been off this list since may, so excuse me if i ask stupid questions. like, for example, do people hate the new mills on tomorrow, as much as London's Atlas [who wont stock it] has anyone bought the minimal nation repress? i remember hearing that the original blue issue had more tracks [or is this a yawn FAQ/myth] and hearing people wish for it to be repressed in this format. any news? s'good to be back. martin ps if you're still there rob [McC], giz a shout.
