(313) Ian Hind's 21st Birthday Party

2000-03-07 Thread Shane from PLURkids

Hi all,

Ian Hind sent me the following email about his birthday party, which is
next saturday the 18th. For those of you who don't know Ian, he performs
minimal techno with 3 turntables, a dp2 effects processor, a Roland TR-909,
and an SH-101. His feats on the decks have earned him public respect from
none other than Richie himself, and I can say that I've consistently been
amazed with his prowess and ability to operate so many pieces of equipment
simultaneously. Besides that, Ian is as old-skool as they come, and yet
still sports a seriously good vibe. Anyone looking for really good techno
next saturday should consider attending - I know I'll be there.

The lineup:

Ian Hind - dex/dp2/tr-909/sh-101
Rob Dearlove - dex/dp2
DM - dex/ and a toy box.
Phat Albert - rx5/efx/apple

Re: (313)kdj 2 track EP's SUCK!

2000-03-07 Thread Dave Clark
Just to clarify

- I haven't heard the record yet
- I'm reserving my own judgement until that time.

I would also like to point out that this record has not hit any
shelves here at all, due to the fact that it doesn't look like it's hit
any of the distributor's sheets. Why are so many good records only
pressed 100 copies or so? (although most of the time Perth gets a
decent portion of these). Is this 'underground' or just snobbery?

The other moodymann stuff on the shelves is great... 'ya blessin
me' is pretty cool, the pandemonium record is EXCELLENT, and if
you missed out on shades of jae, that is available. One thing
though, the other side supposedly has 'the setup' on there - that is
a different song! 'The setup' as plays on my original shades of
jae/setup EP is completely different. Who knows what's going on?

On the other hand, I've been told that the kdj on moods /

(313) old comps

2000-03-07 Thread phred
So I picked up a couple old compilation albums a few days ago that are
quite interesting, but I've never heard of before.

One is Syncopate '88 on Capitol from (you guessed it) 1988, with a bunch
of vocal house stuff like Kym Mazelle Useless and tracks like Dancing
and Music, and a completely captivating Movin' 88 remix of Brass
Construction.

That one has a Union Jack on the cover and a banner saying London Towne
House.

The other one is called Techno 1/Dance? (KMS-018) that looks like it must
have come out at the end of 1988 or early 1989, since all the credits are
for 1988. Pretty much an allstar lineup: Definition of Love, Yeah Yeah
Yeah (Magic Juan), a KMS remix of MK/Separate Mind's First Bass, Illusion
(R. Tyme with Mayday, D. Wynn, KMS, produced by Mayday, mixed by Magic Juan --
yow!) and Beyond the Dance. Among others :)

I've got a few other comps from that time, mostly house and mostly not
all that good, so I put these in the recommended category.

Re: (313) Know Whey Maaan..

2000-03-07 Thread Simon Walley

DJT1000 replies

 Because it's double the vinyl,
 hence double the price.

Vinyl costs about 5c.
Admittedly there are some extra costs to recoup, like
cutting more studio time. *but* there must be
massive economies of scale in things like
distribution, promotion, storage and racking, artwork
and handling etc etc. Still think almost double the
price is taking the piss.

Not really. From a labels PoV, you end up paying double for almost
everything apart from sleeves. Two cuts, extra artwork design + films,
shipping costs get bumped up, etc. Also, even though your costs are
increased, you might only sell a few hundred more copies, so you make back
less overall.

Last time I looked, in Holland, the same thing works
in reverse with German, Belgium Dutch gear going
cheaper than stuff from the UK. Funny thing is this
actually seems to increase desirability and sales as a
result. As a local example CiMs, always excellent,
output got a better market visibility in the UK when
it came out, at import prices, on Delsin! That extra
40% most help the shops margins???

Thats different because the Delsin 12 was in a different (more downtempo)
style and had more tracks on it than the Headspace stuff. The sound of it
was more IDM which sells okay at the moment.

Also, I'd guess some Dutch artists have sold more on UK labels than they did
on Dutch ones (e.g. Gerd and Max404 on Universal Language)

(313) Ersatz Audio comp

2000-03-07 Thread Diana Potts

So I just got the Ersatz Audio compilation,The Forgotten Sounds of Tomorrow,
in the mail. Besides having a beautiful title the CD rocks in an old skool
electro style. There is not a track that lacks, every one is a definition of
the new-wave(slash)electro(slash)IDM clasic sound that Ersatz is known to
most for producing. The cover art is disturbing and at times the music is a
bit more spookier. I've been reviewing alot of bland, cookie cutter techno
lately and it makes me appreciate the original stufflike this. On a side
note,If you ever have a chance to check out Adult or LeCar live-do it.

(313) Circulation Records

2000-03-07 Thread Kent williams
The other day I was in my local shop, and pulled out about 10 records
on the Circulation label -- a purely visual grab, since each of the
Circulation's is color coded. I started dropping needle on them, and ended
up grabbing 6 of them. I'd classify them as tech-house (I guess) and dance
floor oriented, but with some really lush touches that connect back to
Detroit.

So I did a web search and came up dry. Anyone know who these guys are?
Is Circulation still a going concern?

(313) an interesting tidbit

2000-03-07 Thread T Linder

Hey y'all,
A friend of mine gets a word of the day emailed to him from the
Webster's Dictionary publishers. He forwarded it to me and I couldn't help
but pass it on. Check out the French vernacular pronunciation.

Respect,
T

The Word of the Day for March 3 is:

shivaree \shih-vuh-REE\ (noun)
: a noisy mock serenade to a newly married couple

Example sentence:
On the night of Sally's marriage to Paul, the townspeople
gathered outside the couple's window to participate
in a raucous shivaree.

Did you know?
In 19th century rural America, a newly-married couple might
be treated to a mock serenade, performed with pots, pans,
homemade instruments, and other noisemakers. Such cacophonous
serenades were traditionally considered especially appropriate
for second marriages or for unions deemed incongruous because of
an age discrepancy or some other cause. In the eastern U.S. this
custom, imported from rural England, was simply called a
serenade or known under various local names. In much of the
central U.S. and Canada, however, it was called a shivaree, a
loan from French charivari, which denotes the same folk custom
in France. In more recent years, shivaree has also developed
broader senses; it is sometimes used to mean simply a cacophony
or a celebration.

Not to be confused with the American Circulation (of Balance/Prescription,

Kingston-upon Thames shop, Creative Music. They've been doing Circulation
for over two years now, 16 releases to date (I think) all color coded,
beginning with Green and Lilac being the most recent. They've also released

Their trippy brand of tech-house has come quite into favor recently from the

heard this??what do you think of it??..does maurizio have any mixes on it,
 or is it just pacou

I don't think Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus had anything to do with
this release on LL...

it's decent...but it would make more sense to me if it was Pacou solely
behind this release.

(313) cool stuff in san fran

2000-03-07 Thread joe
Hello everyone...

I'll be in san francisco from Mar. 27 to april 1 (mon-sat) and I'm
wondering if anyone can give me some tips on cool 313/techno/jazz/other
good music/spoken word events I should check out.

Any other must sees (ya know, tourist crap) would also be appreciated.

Oh yeah, and record shops too, that'd be helpful. You should respond in
private unless you think others would be interested blah blah blah...
Any info is appreciated.

Thanks,
_joe
