FW: [thewire] TV Victor, anyone?
this came through from the wire mag list about two recent tresor releases. chris -- From: alexei monroe [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [thewire] TV Victor, anyone? Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 9:17 AM Has anyone heard the new TV Victor CD on Tresor? Worth getting? I understand it's ambient, some of it is about seven years old, and there's some involvement from Moritz Von Oswald. It depends what you're after and how much you love early 90s ambience. The timeless deceleration of a phrase over 70 mins. (Disc 1) is a fascinating concept. Unfortunately the phrase in question is pretty complacent and almost twee one and since that I think could only be rescued from torpor by some heavy textural interventions that never arrive. There's also no obvious quality contributed by Moritz and I think the Wire review definitely overstated the merits of the album, which is perhaps the weakest Tresor I've heard. On the other hand its good to see the quality of Mills' new Tresor release (Metropolis) recognised in the new issue. If you had reservations about Mills becoming too tasteful or complacent on recent albums this may at least partially restore your faith. There are still a few fairly twee ambient tracks but several outstanding tracks that for me represent his most impressive work since X-103. _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Re: [313] Paul Oakenfold
No doubt. I'm sure he was very involved in developing the music over there. In fact he still does spin some tech-housey sounding stuff in his sets, however the overly orchestrated, time-stretched build ups still tend to be rather anti-climactic. Oakenfold is truly a good DJ at what he does, but understand that Trance is Eurocized and considerably watered down Techno which 313 birthed so passionately and overly-clever, mainly British AR folks have been banking considerably off of for nearly a decade. It is a classic case of Imitators getting the glory and getting paid for cheesing up what historically Black American musical Innovators have produced and done okay financially with. Oakey's people have hyped him to a level that commands big revenues, but I'll take ANY 313 artist/deejay over him any day of the week, trance just ain't got enough soul to satisfy most 313ers. Ain't no booty in that trance... Longevity is the key to this music marketing game and the most hyped artists usually come crashing down the hardest. Re: [313] Ken Ishii
I saw Ken Ishii with Derrick May and Derrick Carter in Chicago a few years back in a high school gym. Surreal setting... His set stradled the beginning of Derrick Carter's so I missed the end of his set. His mixing was not spectacular, but I got the impression he had trouble hearing (it was in a high school gym). His track selection was top notch though. Derrick May had none of the same problems - his set was awfully tight. I wouldn't compare their DJ styles - I think they're very different. Derrick May is extremely creative and Ken Ishii was pretty straightforward (not that that's necessarily a bad thing). I would definitely go out of my way to see him again though. It's been almost three years and I would like to see him in a proper setting. Ken Ishii made his first visit to Melbourne for the Earthcore outdoor party for last New Year's Eve and is now returning to play club dates in Sydney and Melbourne this weekend. I think it will be very cool, so maybe people can consider going to that. He plays the next installment of the Innovator party at Seven nightclub this Monday night - which is Cup Eve - in Melbourne, I am unsure of the Sydney details. He is being described as a Derrick May type DJ, so we'll see - funky, soulful and diverse! Has anyone experienced Ken's sets - what can we expect? Recloose and Common Factor are playing the same night here in Melbourne at Honytonks, so it's a case of needing a cloning machine or party-hopping, I guess! Incidentally, Ken Ishii has a new album out in Japan - it actually came out two months ago. It's called Flatspin and three of the tracks are part of the soundtrack to a new film. There is also a track called Iceblink which is a collaboration between Inner City and Ken - that is Ken did the track and the vocals are performed by Paris Grey and produced by Inner City. I don't know if anyone has heard this track yet but I should imagine it would be very interesting. The album should be released in Asia over the new few months and will get an Australian release - at this stage possibly early in the New Year. Fumiya Tanaka is another Japanese DJ who has only just made his first foray into these parts and I caught him at a small party a couple of weekends ago. Unfortunately something went wrong with the mixer just as he was about to start - I think with the monitor headphone jack breaking off in the socket, just one of those things! So that caused a delay - for some the night lost a little momentum, for others it added to the anticipation. He was very good - subtle and subliminal, as I said in an earlier post, but I was tired (it was Friday) and couldn't really focus on the whole night. I did wonder however if anyone else caught Fumiya and had any thoughts? - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [313] Ken Ishii
I know what you mean by comparisons, I keep an open mind. Fumiya has been called Japan's techno Mills but he took a different trajectory altogether, though I could see the influence. It was The Face who called Ishii the Derrick May of Japan yet I think the promoter here put that quote in the press release as he imagines that Ken will appeal to the same intelligent fan-base, that's all. Musically they have have an affinity, that's clear. I saw Ken Ishii with Derrick May and Derrick Carter in Chicago a few years back in a high school gym. Surreal setting... Recloose and Art Farmer or Blakey or maybe Donald Byrd...
Hey, I am trying desperately to find out who it is that Recloose samples on his first 12 for Planet E - the sax for the db type of track. I thought it might be an Art Farmer LP (i.e Gigi Gryce solo) but various convoluted processes of thought suggest it could be an Art Blakey or Donald Byrd LP. Basically, I don't have a f***ing clue. Does anybody know which it is? It sounds like a georgous solo (it's the 2nd sax snippet that I am on about, though they could be all from the same solo to preserve the key), and I'd like to check. Thanks, and apologies for the long windedness... Jonny. N.P: Mental Instrum EP. Phewee!!

Tristan, Carl is playing at a large-scale Bugged Out event in Prestatyn (North Wales) on the 17th. Named the 'Bugged Out Weekender', the event features Carl, Richie Hawtin, Felix Da Housecat, Green Velvet, Justin Robertson, Dave Clarke, plus a fair amount of tat to boot. Tickets are £99, which seems rather steep. The event is set at a 'holiday camp' and so the prices include a chalet for the duration. I have. Very, very bassy, but a little more restrained than previous releases maybe. I thought it was OK, but not brilliant. Has anyone heard the soon-to-be-released lp from Tobias Schmidt? I saw that it is going to be released in the States in mid November but wonder if it's been released overseas already. Lara

RE: [313] FW: [thewire] TV Victor, anyone?
I have this 2CD, both tracks start out really nice but they get boring after 15 minutes, it just stays the same. This trick works on the M records but not on these tracks. CD number 2 is the best, the track works fine as a background music while doing some household stuff :) [EMAIL PROTECTED] this came through from the wire mag list about two recent tresor releases. chris -- From: alexei monroe [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [thewire] TV Victor, anyone? Re: [313] KDJ Forevernevermore LP?
Very jazzy. It doesn't have the same kick that Shades of Jae has. It's almost a session piece if that makes any sense. It's one sided with one track. I like it, but I wouldn't list it among his essentials. When I'm in the mood for Moodyman this isn't one of the records I look for. I wouldn't call it downtempo really, but it's among his more listening oriented works. Re: [313] Musik And Maschine Techno Congress
I have received some letters off list about my original post so I thought I should clarify my stance and clear up any misconceptions - anyone wishing to write me, please read this all first. I think with the Internet it is very easy to skim over something and react instantaneously without re-reading a text or taking it all in - I myself do this all the time, I am trying to restrain myself. I think it is a very serious, and frightening, problem with this volatile medium, that you can upset people without meaning to, or misunderstand them or be misunderstood. I hope I have not been guilty of this in any way. I was not in any way critiquing the concept of M+M, in fact I think it is a BRILLIANT, long over-due idea, and could develop into something very remarkable, and this is why I was keen to know more - the Web site is very good but not comprehensive (as yet). Nor was I in any way undermining Jeff Mills, whose endeavours - music, DJing, theories, writings - I have followed and supported and believed in, shared and been inspired by over the years. I think my posts convey that, if nothing else, and I have generated affirming media to that end. Nor was I insinuating anything about ANY of those involved in ANY way. But as much as, despite the lip service, it is verboten that females have viewpoints on techno, I have them. I was merely curious to see if Detroit was represented, if people from different parts of the world were represented, if there were any female participants - like Laura who is an example of a Detroit woman who has done a lot for this music and has many insights. Any female in this subculture is bound to be sensitive to issues of marginalisation or exclusion. Hence maybe my remarks about closed societies may have hurt some. I apologise. I hope you see where I am coming from. All I was doing was expressing my confusion about M+M's 'international' status and any claim to be representative on that basis. Now 'international' *could* mean that it has members dawn from international backgrounds, which changes things, or it *could* mean 'global', meaning that it would be representative of different scenes across the world. This is what I was trying to ascertain. At the same time M+M could be in transition, with the latter the ultimate aim. OK, I was dying to know. To me, it looks like an extension of Tresor, which is fine, and so therefore German-centric. Tresor occupies a very important place in the history of techno, as does Germany and West Europe, evidently. Tresor has been very supportive of artists and has been a catalyst for innovation and artistic exchange. It now looks to me as if M+M has a trans-atlantic focus, which is fine, end of story, I understand. I was NOT saying that any Australian should have been there, so to get mail stating that we are irrelevant, that our DJs and producers are irrelevant, was startling to me and not just missing my point. Most Australians carry a deep feeling that they are mediocre - without culture, without new ideas, we don't need to be told that we haven't produced a unique music or unique DJs or writers, etc, etc, as that is a constant anxiety to us, we undermine ourselves. We are all desperately trying to move beyond that, prove something to ourselves and to others. That said, we do have gifted people - this regardless of congresses or anything - there are people here with visions and ideas and passion. But because of the tyranny of distance, because of the perception overseas that Australia is irrelevant, I can see why no one would know much about what happens here, or maybe even care. HMC *chose* to stay in Adelaide and do his thing instead of going down the Anthony Pappa route - his love of that city is like I imagine Mad Mike's is for Detroit. HMC did much to introduce Detroit techno to Australia, thus creating a market whereby international techno DJs could tour, and he remains passionate about Detroit and quality techno. He is making great tracks and has started his own labels. My point about Australia was merely that I could use that as one EXAMPLE of a strong scene that wasn't represented, if indeed M+M sought to be a GLOBAL entity as opposed to have international members - I hope that differentiation is now clear. Had I been in Japan I would have asked the same question, had I been in Singapore I would asked the same question, or Croatia or Poland or the Czech Republic or South America, had I been in Detroit I would have asked that. It's just that I can research Australia as an example, I can call up people locally and interstate without clocking up too much debt. I don't have access to a government phonecard (parochial joke for Australians), so I can't call people in those distant places. I do hope I didn't offend ANYONE. Thank you sincerely to EVERYONE who replied and gave me info, that's all I wanted. Best Cyclone

Re: [313] New Tobias Schmidt
There are still copies of Toby's very first releases on Telepathic available via: http://www.recordtime.com PSI-017 Tobias Schmidt EP - Dollar, Yen, Obstruct and Titan PSI-018 Splerge EP (Toby Fred) - Splerge #1, Customs, Immigration and Splerge #2. Recorded in Scotland. Telepathic regards, fRED I have. Tristan Unfortuately, it isn't in Liverpool, it at a holiday site in N.Wales (prestatyn) at Bugged Out's inaugral weekender, which is on 17/18/19 Nov... Other playing include Slam, Josh Wink, Roger sanchez, Rolando, X- press 2, Green Velvet, Junior Sanchez (Who i recommend), Dave Clarke, Felix Da Housecat and many, many others. The black knight = guy here is Justin Robertson. i have seen him spin a 6 hour set, and he = didn't stop bangin for one minute. I have the deepest respect for Justin. I know he does (and will) bang it out whenever neccessary, as he was part of the mid 90's UK techno circuit that included Bugged Out, Club UK, Slam, Back 2 Basics, Open All Hours, Lakota ect, so he would have to play that style. But on the other hand, he also is responsible for 2 of the most influential nights in the north (if not the UK, Most excellent Rebellious Jukebox), where anything everything might get played at one time or the other.. He also can and will play anything that takes his fancy, and did so (as shown on the Excellent JDJ double Mix CD he did in 1997) many times at the Heavenly Jukebox. ~that said, there's nothing wrong with bangin' it out is there? Re: [313] 'joker-flying-around'-track?
I saw this track on MTV a while ago during one of their megamixes on the partyzone. It was I think between a Depeche Mode remix and a Violently Happy by Bjork remix. The accompanying videoclip was something in the X-mix style and shows a joker (jester) flying through some kind of alien planet, with flowers and strange plants. It is a very melodic and funky techno track. Any ideas? It might be on one of the X-mix vids. Could it be from Sven Vaeth's The Harlequin, the Robot and the Ballet-Dancer ?
