Hi -

Hope to see some of you Chicago (313) listmembers at the Subterreanean
tonight. Fellow listmember Dave Siska set it up, and Theorem and I are
both playing live sets.

Doors are at 9:30PM, I believe, and I think I'm playing at 10:30PM.

Cheers,

Can Promoters DJs resolve their differences?

2000-11-04 Thread JovanBlade
Greetings From TP!

I am sharing the following information with this list in hopes that it will
create a basis for positive dialog / discussion of how we as DJs Promoters
work with each other to achieve the common goal of a banging party with a
REAL RIGHT vibe!
I especially hope that any aspiring / up-and-coming DJs and/or Promoters on
this list will take away something valuable which they can use.

Today Carl (the promoter behind the HOUSE EXPLOSION event) and I spoke
regarding the controversy centered on the flyer for the HOUSE EXPLOSION 2000
event. This morning I sent an e-mail to which he responded by phone and
agreed to ALL of my demands to resolve this issue of the improper use of my
name.

Today I received 11 e-mail letters from cats who see nothing wrong with a
person's name being listed on a flyer as a SPECIAL INVITED GUEST.
Furthermore, they asked why I was making such a big deal about it, and
thought I should be honored by the invitation. Well, I was honored! But how
fine is the honor if it is bitter sweet?
I understand that many of us on this list are in various countries throughout
the world where the laws governing such matters are different. However, being
here in the USA, let me try to make my point by using an example . . . . .

. . . . LET'S SAY I DECIDED TO THROW A PARTY AT THE STATE THEATER IN DETROIT
ON CHRISTMAS NIGHT. I THEN DRAFT A LETTER OF INVITATION TO MICHAEL JACKSON. I
THEN FAX THE LETTER TO MICHAEL JACKSON'S MANAGEMENT COMPANY. I NEVER GET A
RESPONSE FROM MICHAEL JACKSON, OR ANY OF HIS REPRESENTATIVES. HOWEVER, I TAKE
IT UPON MYSELF TO MAKE FLYERS ADVERTISING MY CHRISTMAS PARTY AT THE STATE
THEATER WITH SPECIAL INVITED GUEST - MICHAEL JACKSON!

I ASK YOU, MY FRIENDS, HOW LONG DO YOU THINK IT WOULD TAKE BEFORE MICHAEL'S
LEGAL TEAM WOULD TAKE ACTION AGAINST ME? WOULD I BE WRONG TO ADVERTISE
MICHAEL'S NAME AS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST? AFTER ALL, I DIDN'T SAY THAT HE
WAS GOING TO PERFORM RIGHT? I DIDN'T EVEN SAY THAT HE WAS GOING TO BE THERE.
ALL I SAID WAS THAT HE WAS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST. IN FACT, I COULD PROVE
THAT I DID INDEED INVITE MR. JACKSON BY PRESENTING THE LETTER ALONG WITH A
COPY OF THE VERIFIED FAX TRANSMISSION TO MICHAEL'S MANAGEMENT WHICH STATES
THAT I AM INVITING HIM TO ATTEND MY EVENT. SO I ASK YOU GOOD PEOPLE, IF MIKE,
NOR HIS PEOPLE RESPOND TO MY INVITATION, DO I HAVE THE RIGHT TO USE HIS NAME
IN ANY MANNER (EVEN AS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST) IN PROMOTION OF MY EVENT?

WHY DID I MAKE SUCH A BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS? BECAUSE I HAVE TO TAKE A STAND ON
WHAT I BELIEVE IS RIGHT, NOT ONLY BECAUSE IT AFFECTS ME, BUT BECAUSE SOMEDAY
(IF NOT TODAY) IT COULD AFFECT YOU!
MY POSITION WAS BASED UPON A PRINCIPLE WHICH IS PERSONAL TO ME, BUT COMMON TO
ALL OF US.

FOR THE RECORD DELANO SMITH FELT AS I DID, AND ALSO EXPRESSED HIS CONCERN
OVER BEING LISTED ON THE FLYER. AS I UNDERSTAND IT,
HE TOO HAS RESOLVED HIS ISSUE WITH THE PROMOTER.

Peace Respect,

TP

Are Juan Atkins Eddie Flashin' Fowlkes L.A. residents now?

I'm seeing a lot of listings with Eddie Flashin' Fowlkes on our local

I've also been seeing Juan's name pop up more on event listings of late.

Have the two of them moved out here to L.A. or something?

Re: [313] Musik And Maschine Techno Congress

2000-11-04 Thread Glyph1001
Cyclone,

To answer your questions...yes it was international. Yes, Detroit was
well represented. Yes, there were women present. There was even
talk about the role women play in techno and the plans to include
women producers/djs. I should know...I was there.

It was an experience I will never forget. I walked into this with more of a
consumer point of view and it just blew my mind how professional/informative/
conceptive everything was.

The discussions were interpersonal, regarding VERY interesting
topics. I walked into Artform and Design and there was Mills
elaborating on a particular point. How much, too much, eh?

The workshop/discussions were smaller/calmer as opposed to the awards
show afterwards. You would've sworn it was the The Academy Awards,
but for Techno.

It went on pretty well and one of the main focuses was to test the waters
and see what is needed to make M+M a better, valid organization.
Its purpose was most definitely served.

Re: [313] Aussie homelands canceled

2000-11-04 Thread Cyclone Wehner
Homelands is cancelled due to a few unforeseen circumstances but will
probably come back in the New Year.

Some of the acts are likely to still come out and play various club dates
anyway. This is being worked out now.

Agent Mad, who were one of the teams behind the event, are planning another
cool party in Melbourne on the same weekend (the 9th of Dec) with some of
the acts - rumoured are Green Velvet, Peace Division and those Australian
favourites the Space DJz. This should be very, very worthwhile. I imagine
these acts may play other dates around the country.

Laurent Garnier is still coming to Australia - and I have confirmed this
with the Melbourne promoter orchestrating his tour (Hardware). He was set to
do just Sydney Homelands, not Melbourne Homelands, all along, and was then
set to play a Hardware party and the latter party remains unaffected. The
confusion about this arrangement arose from the fact that the ads or press
releases applicable to Sydney Homelands were placed in both the Sydney and
Melbourne press.

And so Laurent will still be playing Hardware 17 with Cari Lekebusch at the
Melbourne Docks. It's a stripped down live show - should be fantasique.
Check out the street press for more info.

As I say, the Sydney end for Laurent was still being confirmed as of Friday
- likely to be just a venue switch - but there should be more info on this
and any other dates for the other acts on Monday/Tuesday. I am sure it will
work out just fine.

I am looking into the Surburban Knight one.

I guess most people know that homelands is cancelled.
This means no laurent garnier or suburban knight.
Does anybody know if they might come down anyway .

Re: [313] Paul Oakenfold

2000-11-04 Thread tom_magicfeet
Heh heh, nice post, Cyclone. The mag in question is, I believe, XLR8R. Their
anti-arrogant-Oakenfold stance is just one of the reasons I'm proud to
contribute to the mag. And I just love the idea of UR telling him where to
go, the parasite!

Paul Oakenfold when asked about whether he is aware of the resistance and
scepticism within the underground directed towards big-name British trance
 DJs playing in Detroit/the US:

Not with the DJs, but I'm sure it goes on. I've had it with a magazine...
Listen, I'm no bigger or better than anyone, if I do a gig and the gig is
no
good, then the magazines write about it, then fair enough, but when this
magazine got really personal and started saying that me and The Chemical
Brothers were coming to America and trying to take over - I mean, how can
one or three people go to a country and take over the country? We don't
even
live there, and the magazine was saying that we're taking work away from
the
American DJs, which was so unfair and so wrong - we're there to support a
scene and to help a scene flourish, not to come over and try and take it
over. No one person can do that. So I've had that from a magazine, but not
at the moment from any other DJ. I like Detroit and I like the music that
comes out there. There's a track Knights Of The Jaguar which I found -
[it's] over a year old - and I'm still playing it, it's one of my biggest
records in Ibiza and it's fantastic. I tried to license it for my label
[Perfecto] and Underground Resistance - who I respect - didn't want to do
it. They were offered a lot of money by bigger record companies than
mine -
I mean, I'm a small independent - but they decided they didn't want to do
it. And that's cool. Their outlook on dance music is their outlook. I
don't
think any one can change that and I certainly don't want to. I like to
embrace all kinds of music and they've a good scene there, so why not?

Whoa, I missed this - what do you mean 'Part II'? The Nude Photo type track

Has anyone here got it yet? I Bought a blue

and at the moment I think it's even better than pt1.
Side B's got a serious Derrick May-connection with the
Nude Photo-laughter and a not entirely disssimilar

Rhythim-like bassline on the next track. It's a
double-vinyl(eight tracks, like pt1) and it's great.

Re: [313] mp3.com on or off topic? (+update)

2000-11-04 Thread Phonopsia
I think it's an issue of online topicality. For the most part you don't see
as much of the go buy my record posts as you do updates to websites and
this makes sense to me. We're almost all online and have access to that
music. If the music pertains directly to 313 I think it's on topic. I rather
like the go buy my records posts too but I could see how some people might
think this violates the following rule:

  * Spam is strictly prohibited, 313 list subscribers are
not marketing fodder.

If TP, Todd Sines, Sean Deason, Theorem, Christian Bloch or any of the other
talented professional musicians on the list inform us about new material in
any format I think it's on topic because it's of interest to most of the
people subscribed to 313. If Sean Deason asked us to buy his new candy bar I
think we may take umbrage. Or maybe we'd let it slide since he's such a
likeable fellow :^)

I'm very pleased with the recent postings. It may encourage other list
members to show off their stuff. So many of us are striving to make a career
out of it in the future. Constructive feedback is crucial to obtainance of
that goal.

So has anyone else on the list submitted a Redux remix? Three days left.

Here's some links for me (all unreleased):

My most recent work, the album Quebecois in full:

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Lounge/5102/quebecois.htm

Older songs from my 1998 album Novelty Conservation:

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/19/phonopsia.html

And I'm sure y'all have seen the URL for my Redux remixes about twenty-five
times now, so I won't bother reposting that.

DETROIT
ON CHRISTMAS NIGHT. I THEN DRAFT A LETTER OF INVITATION TO MICHAEL JACKSON.
I

THEN FAX THE LETTER TO MICHAEL JACKSON'S MANAGEMENT COMPANY. I NEVER GET A
RESPONSE FROM MICHAEL JACKSON, OR ANY OF HIS REPRESENTATIVES. HOWEVER, I
TAKE

I DIDN'T EVEN SAY THAT HE WAS GOING TO BE
THERE.

SO I ASK YOU GOOD PEOPLE, IF
MIKE,
NOR HIS PEOPLE RESPOND TO MY INVITATION, DO I HAVE THE RIGHT TO USE HIS
NAME
IN ANY MANNER (EVEN AS A SPECIAL INVITED GUEST) IN PROMOTION OF MY
EVENT?

WHY DID I MAKE SUCH A BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS? BECAUSE I HAVE TO TAKE A STAND
ON
WHAT I BELIEVE IS RIGHT, NOT ONLY BECAUSE IT AFFECTS ME, BUT BECAUSE
SOMEDAY

(IF NOT TODAY) IT COULD AFFECT YOU!
MY POSITION WAS BASED UPON A PRINCIPLE WHICH IS PERSONAL TO ME, BUT COMMON
TO

ALL OF US.

FOR THE RECORD DELANO SMITH FELT AS I DID, AND ALSO EXPRESSED HIS CONCERN
OVER BEING LISTED ON THE FLYER. AS I UNDERSTAND IT,
HE TOO HAS RESOLVED HIS ISSUE WITH THE PROMOTER.

Peace Respect,
