Moodyman live UK, NYE
Ms. Potts asked me to forward this for her since the list server doesn't like her today. I really think something's wrong with it. Here's the poop: From: Diana Potts [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Moodman Live in UK,NYE (charity) Date: Thu, 07 Dec 2000 16:32:20 In regards to this party there is a new charity starting. The name of the foundation is simply called Bring Diana to London for New Years. It's been around for many years but is *just* starting to be recognized on the level it deserves. The goal of the drive is 700 US dollars, as that is the going rate for a Virgin air ticket out of Detroit Metro to Heathrow. Volunteers from the community are standing by for your bountiful pledges. Thank you, and remember to give (to Diana) this holiday season. Forwarded by Tristan, who will be retaining a 10% forwarded message fee from all charitable proceeds collected. _ Do You Yahoo!? Techno, like everything, is just another part of global capitalism, and works on exactly the same principles as any other business. Just cause you only sell 1000 pressings pressing does not make you any more holy than Warner Bros. The second you sell a record you are in the music business too. Christ, it took long enough for someone to say this. Commercialism is commercialism is commercialism. What you try and do is distill it into something purer and more minimal. The terminology is misleading you here, though. You are just doing something different. No more and no less. That needn't invalidate anything like the politics or philosophy surrounding the work in question, though. So you're tone shifting isn't wrong, but it certainly isn't the essence either. It's just an approach. It's like someone doing an analysis of Hamlet, say. If the essence of Hamlet were, for example, the philosophy of self it represents to some, then it would be better expressed as an essay on the philosophy of self. Obviously, it wouldn't really, though: the essence of Hamlet is Hamlet. It is what it is. i'm with the non-reductionists on this one. you can't just compress an artistic piece into its constituent elements and legitimately claim that it represents the essentialist nature of the original, because trying to accurately define the fundamental components is ultimately a matter of interpretation. glyn

Re: [313] 313: jazz-tech?
hello, Techno and jazz can very much share the same vocabulary if you look beneath the surface window dressings and look at the actual music. It is all about 7ths, 9ths, and 11th's using a I-II-IV chord progession. Techno can totally do anything musically that can be done in jazz. Yes, there isn't the use of poly-rhythm, or odd time signatures that is common in some jazz, and the musical structure is utterly rigid, but the chord voicings, progressions, and musical scales are totally compatible and even necessary for that good ole' Detroit'y feel. I-II-IV is about a jazz as it gets. I think Detroit musicians site jazz because of a similar emotional feeling. Because really, good techno is just a few bars of jazz dragged out for 4 minutes with a funky-a** shuffeled 909 rhythm behind it. take care, mt ps philosophical techno discussions are for wankers, I used to be one of those wankers until I discovered that talking about dance music is one of the most profoundly unimportant things you can possibly do. You are going to be dead in a few decades, stop wasting your time blabbling and fretting about this silly crap. err, ok, end of public service announcement. martin clark wrote: Date: Thu, 07 Dec 2000 10:41:56 +1100 To: darw_n [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [313] ? There's a common afro-futuristic-struggle and emphasis on innovation aka 'meaning' in jazz that they want percieved in techno. But structurally they're far apart. Some difficulties
The 313 server seems to be having some problems right now. Some of my posts are coming through up to three days after I post them. I've noticed at least five other people complain of posts not coming through too. Problem for me is that I'm looking like a complete ass when my first comments on a subject come through three days after a thread starts, and I've already made a few follow-up posts. This is annoying. So... I emailed Matt McQueen today to see if he knows what's going on, but I know he's very busy and doesn't always get to his email right away. My question is, does anyone else know if there is someone else we should be contacting, or is everyone else except a handful of us getting through fine? Which contradicts your theory of the techno movement having no unifying principles So which one is it? I'll even further that by saying that techno and rave exists in its strength that it does because this generation, and the last generation has felt nothing but apathy and boredom, techno was born... Quite the contrary. Techno was born because there were people that were *not* apathic, because there were people that heard a certain sound and ran with it. People that were actively pursuing a goal, because there were people that just went out and made music, set up labels and distribution companies, DJed, threw parties and whatnot, all just for the fun of it. People that stuck with it, despite odds being stacked heavily against them in the 80s and early 90s. Techno exists in its current form and strength mainly because the distinction between producer and consumer (both in the broad sense of the word) is blurred, as opposed to the regular pop scene. As long as we can keep that distinction blurry, then techno can generate dozens of Rolling Stone covers, MTV awards, car commericals and whatnot, and it will still be techno. It is what it is. Otto

Personally I have to say that I DO have confidence that this will come off. I'll be very disappointed if there is no live show, though, as happened in '98, when hundreds paid a hefty ticket fee and made it down to London for what turned out to be (highly enjoyable) a DJs-only session, only to find out that UR played live at 69 in Glasgow two days later for a handful of people. Ideally, I'm hoping that UR and Drexciya both play live... RE: [313] MOODYMANN in London NYE
As some listmembers already know I have squeezed the last out of my piggy bank to go to London to see UR live. I also arranged for a feature on the party in Bassic Groove, the leading Dutch dance mag. This London-trip is an extremely costly endeavour for me and my friends especially with the exchange rate for the £ being so high. You can imagine how disappointed we all would be if UR would not perform. I guess a lot of us, some more than others, are really waiting for a 100%-sure confirmation. The party is going down in about three weeks. Isn't it time to put an end to the doubt and the rumours? Wooh... Somebody got out of bed the wrong side :) I have lost count of the number of times I have gone to see Moodymann only to hear he hasn't turned up. Well, I haven't actually... it's 2 times and 1 of them was at Space which does that a lot anyway. Nonetheless, it's a fairly reasonable doubt and it's not based on any player hating, just experience. In any case, I AM GOING TO BUY A TICKET TO THIS. I do have every faith in Ranx even if he is a grump, as the 3 chairs night was probably the best night out I have ever had in London and I know Frank Jack thinks the same too. So what else do you need to know? Well, I need to know where exactly to get tickets, is it only via the web site, or do they have them in Atlas, too? Enclose SAE and daytime phone number and send to: Transit, 22a Adeyfield House, Cranwood Street, Hoxton, London EC1V 9PD. Allow 28 days for delivery. - Atlas have tickets too, and I think some of the other usual spots in London do as well (Rough Trade?). If you buy from the Credit Card number they'll insist on sending the ticket special delivery, which is admittedly very fast, but you'll have to be in when it arrives to sign for it and it costs quite a bit for a mere bit of paper. One of the guys in Atlas said that the tickets were selling well. There was a poster up in the shop with all the relevent names featured. It's up to you at the end of the day. Everyone who's bought a ticket is facing the same risk - I don't think we can give you any more reassurance than we have received ourselves. I'm certainly not gonna spend the run up to this event worrying whether it will happen or not. As someone else said, I'm sure most people have been let down by no-shows before (anyone else get suckered into one of the Eclipse festivals??) - I reckon this one's worth taking a gamble on though... Stupid Question
Hello All: I am a native Detroiter. I love all the 313 artists that we talk about on this list. I am sad, jealous, and frustrated that everywhere else in the world gets to attend parties Djed' by these marvelous artists except those of us actually in the 313 I know that it's about radio, and major label support here in the US, for artists to succeed. But I refuse to accept the way things are now for what they will be from now on I love all kinds of music; Afrobeat, house, RB, rock, jazz, P-Funk and a little reggae. But why can't I go out right here in Detroit and see Moodymann??? The DEMF was an anomaly, and unfortunately I wasn't here for that but I did download lots of the archived webcasts (big-ups to Groovetech). But I know in the beginning Techno was something that lots of Black kids enjoyed at places like the Music Insititute. I never went but I got into house a few years later (Ken Collier). Now when I go see Derrick May at Motor it's mostly white kids with glowsticks. Now that's cool but I don't like the way it seems this music is marketed as being white and I know that has a lot to do with the bullshit at places like Vibe magazine. Then the Black kids think that techno is it Black enough like house??? I mean I understand if you just prefer house but it seems that lots of people are not even open to techno. It's like a lot of people black out on the fact that Ron Trent's biggest record Altered States was actually rooted in Detroit Techno??? See Juan Atkins' interview in URB millenium future issue. I just find the way things are to be kind of strange. It's just music made you to heal your body when you move??? and yet having a good party here is like finding a needle in a haystack. I went to Queens on Decks last night at the State Theater. The women played well, although I missed Dj Genesis. But no one was there But I also notice that with some not all white crowds, Derrick and others turn into a spectacle; i.e. there is more watching th edj by the sidelines rather than dancing. This music is for everyone and maybe if these media outlets weren't so full of it, we could all be at these parties together, like right here in Detroit. I'm really sad about the way it is in Detroit right now, but I will keep buying the records and going to the events. anybody have any thoughts they wanna share on this??? Peace, Five

I am sad, jealous, and frustrated that everywhere else in the world gets to attend parties Djed' by these marvelous artists except those of us actually in the 313 The times we've been in Detroit i heard so many talented DJ's from the 313 area (famous and less-famous) it made me jealous, house and techno supossed to be big arround here in Europe but there are so many uninspired DJ's and producers. Anyway some of Hollands well known producers almost never play here (i.e Ferenc Miss Djax, hmmm that's a line-up you will proberly never see :-)) Now when I go see Derrick May at Motor it's mostly white kids with glowsticks. Re: [313] DJ Assault - Live_wow_
i definitely think paris deserves respect. i thought sandwiches was funny, and I think it worked on a number of levels -- although if you fail to understand irony, I can see how you would disagree. On the one hand, the lyrics were funny in a totally up-front silly sort of way, in the same way that weird al yankovic is funny. but then I think paris and andy are funny in another way as well -- i think the pubahs' novelty songs are making fun of novelty songs. they're poking fun at weird al and that sort of goofy humour. their lyrics are self-referentially funny. when paris sings that lyric about making thighs like butter, he knows its silly, and he knows you know its silly, and he's making fun of himself singing this ridiculous lyric, that still is funny without any irony in it at all. also, i don't think a song loses its value just because it almost made it on MTV's TRL. And I like their beat structures. that's all -- Scribe Content dude Neksis EMC Inc. http://www.neksis.com -- From: Jayson B. Re: [313] Some difficulties
The 313 server seems to be having some problems right now. My question is, does anyone else know if there is someone else we should be contacting, or is everyone else except a handful of us getting through fine? ever since i joined this list i've noticed that i haven't been recieving all of the posted messages in my inbox. for example, i often see new posts when people reply with the original message text. kyle

Re: [313] DJ Assault - Live_wow_
i definitely think paris deserves respect. i thought sandwiches was funny, and I think it worked on a number of levels -- although if you fail to understand irony, I can see how you would disagree. Although this sounds like a stab at my intelligence, i'll ignore it. Could it be that i don't care for that kind of irony? On the one hand, the lyrics were funny in a totally up-front silly sort of way, in the same way that weird al yankovic is funny. I'll have to disagree with that one. Al was clever in his word choice. But i'll look at the rest of your arguement first. but then I think paris and andy are funny in another way as well -- i think the pubahs' novelty songs are making fun of novelty songs. I think they're attempting to be as stupid as possible in order to be funny, yes. When paris decides to show off his thong every chance he gets, he's attempting to be as stupid as possible in order to be funny. Maybe its just me, but i like my stupid humor to be borderline insane. Skits like poo boy on the kids in the hall would be a good example. But it seemed to me that the pubahs were going for this genius insanity style of humor, and fell short. but again, just matter or opinion. when paris sings that lyric about making thighs like butter, he knows its silly, and he knows you know its silly, and he's making fun of himself singing this ridiculous lyric, that still is funny without any irony in it at all. Same thing as above for me. If in fact they're going for that style of humor, i find them lacking on it. *shrug* also, i don't think a song loses its value just because it almost made it on MTV's TRL. And I like their beat structures. Ok, it doesn't lose its value? *WHEW*, good, now i can pull out my trance mix cds again, because they must be legit again. And i guess if you like their beat structure, that's ok. Personally, i find it over simplified, especially to the high detroit standards that we all supposedly have. _ Get more from the Web. Jayson B. wrote: Maybe its just me, but i'm kinda surprised anyone on this list actually respects Paris. Paris gets respect for different reasons than Sandwiches. Sandwiches is *NOT* representative for Detroit Grand Pu-Bahs the group, nor is it representative of what Paris does as an artist (listen to his earlier releases on Throw, esp. The Stalker) or as a DJ (spinning everything from deep house to jungle, and all quality stuff). I'm sorry, but sandwiches was uninspiring, unimaginative, unfunny, and it almost made it on to MTV's TRL. Each to their own tastes of course. I personally thought it was quite hilarious, even though the novelty does wear off after a while (which is a characteristic of novelty, I guess %-) You have to admit though, that if it would've made TRL, it may have lead to 12-year-olds singing make you thighs like butter, easy to spread, which scores as high on the hilarity scale as Kent's little kid shouting I am the operator of my pocket calculator, thus scaring an unsuspecting elderly couple :) Cheers, Otto

I have the 12, but I haven't seen the recut movie or heard the extended CD. The tracks on the 12 alternate between ambient background-type music, and danceable Purposemaker-style tracks. Its a must have for Purposemaker and early Axis fans. Definitely different than the Every Dog... series. The dancier tracks are quite rooted in sound, and have an almost airy quality to them, but it doesn't distract from the tracks. I can see how this would go well to a classic movie that has a look into the future in it. not black enough...
I agree. Our music isn't black enough. It's too fast, there's no rappin, mackin and pimpin in it, it's not urban enough. House is too gay. I have stopped worrying about it. If I was waiting to get paid from negroes, I'd be living under the overpass on I-75 and Mack. Or living in a refrigerator box like my man Jean-Michel Basquiat. This is something that really bothers me. Although I am white (or caucasian, or whatever) , I think that cultural diversity and a strong black influence are what make Detroits music excell. Think about this- how many cheesy trance djs or happy hardcore djs are black? Without the black influence, or any cultural influence on dance music, the music becomes bland, boring, and lame. One reason behind this, is that 90% of Americans think that techno or electronic music in general is a European thing. The mainstream music industry adapts to such a belief and markets thier product of dance music to a white audience. Its amazing how well this works, for even when you have an alleged underground rave scene which has grown nationwide, yet still attracts a largely white suburban audience- despite the fact that the music originated in Black communities, and despite the fact that ravers cling to that stupid, hypocritical slogan PLUR. Market segmentation, audience building, and stereotyping are very sucessful tools used by the media coroporations. To be able to go agianst the current black musician stereotype is VERY difficult. The media has burned in the minds of America's youth that black culture is all about chillin in the ghetto, and sex. A lot of these racist stereotypes have been around for hundreds of years. The current pimp stereotype of a black man is very insulting and dangerous as it is reminicent of the old stereotype of black men as sexual preditors. It was this stereotype that slowed the growth of early rock and roll, as parents were scared that thier young, teenage daughters were idolizing Black men. I recall Mos Def once saying that in the media, whenever you see a white pimp they are always running legal businesses, and they are always referred to as businessmen with a very professional appeareance. Black pimps however are always fitting the same stereotype, and are often linked with sexual violence. Sorry about this rant, I can go on about this forever. It just scares me that dance music MIGHT fall down the same path as rock, r'n'b, etc. It is already heading that way with trance. -christos
Re: [313] not black enough...
To be able to go agianst the current black musician stereotype is VERY difficult. The media has burned in the minds of America's youth that black culture is all about chillin in the ghetto, and sex. I digress. The media is not the only culprit in this stereotype. Black men themselves (and i'm not speaking for all of them), are more than helping along this stereotype. Last time i checked, noone was holding a gun to puff daddy or Jay z's head to write the music they do (or sample) or the video's they star in. I know i'm not quoting (i already deleted the quote from my message, and i'm too lazy to go back) directly, but does all of this mean that white producers have no credit what so ever? Has all the techno that those crazy swedes have been putting out been for nothing? Is Richie Hawtin a terrible producer because he's not black? Have whites no real creativity when it comes to dance music? I'm assuming you all answer no. And with that, i ask you another question: since trance is written dominantely by white people, does this reason alone make it uncredible? _ Get more from the Web.
